To have lived the 70s and 80s was better - the music evolved so much in that time. Grunge in America? For get that shit, For the rest of the world it was hard rock, then prog, then punk then NWOBHM, then metal, then thrash... etc. etc.

When Dio was in his prime - most of his career - he didn't get the recognition that he deserved from American media for his musical genius. Most of his music wasn't played on mainstream American radio very much, especially in the Bible Belt states. And MTV showed what a F@cked up representation of music they were by ignoring most of his music. In spite of that, many people knew who he was. I discovered him in the mid-1980s, and he quickly became one of my favorite musicians to listen to. He is easily one of the top 5 metal musicians ever to sing the genre. RIP RJD. Your music is missed!

Ronnie was one of the best vocalists in music, not just metal. You have to check out his early stuff with Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Check out the really early stuff by Ronnie and the Prophets, the Electric Elves, or the Elves, for a totally different style. Then Elf; before he joined Rainbow. One of his best performances ever is "Stargazer" by Rainbow.

Ronnie James Dio was in the band Rainbow, and as someone mentioned below you should definitely check out "Stargazer" to really be wow'd by his vocals. He went on to take over for Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath (I recommend "Heaven and Hell" and "Neon Knights" as standouts from his Sabbath catalog). Here, you are seeing his later years as a solo artist. I always loved this song, but pretty much any song from the album "Holy Diver" is great, especially the title track and the radio hit "Rainbow in the Dark". FUN FACT: Dio was the one who popularized the "devil horns" hand gesture that pretty much everyone on the planet knows, including the makers of emojis. He got the gesture from his old Italian grandmother who used the gesture back in the Old Country to ward off evil spirits. Ironic that the rest of the world assumed it was a demonic gesture... lol.

The band with Doug Aldrich in the guitar indeed kills it
... I saw Dio in 84 and met the main man himself at a signing after the gig at the Manchester Apollo...
If you want to go back to the seventies and see him perform with Rainbow you will be astounded . I think that gig was probably only a couple of years before he passed away.

Well to be certainly, he didnt died 15 months later. This is a live Recording which was taken at 2005, he died 2010. So the premise that he was battling cancer already in 2005 is also wrong. There are no evidents that Dio have had any pain from stomach cancer before 2009.

His prime was a very long span his really good stuff stuff was the late 70s-the early 90s, his elf era stuff and butterfly ball is very different softer or more blues/southern rock flavored. Hell he even did some bigband- doowop stuff in the early 1960s and christian rock with kerry livgren in the early 80s he is quite an enigma he can do anything.

That guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard "Gold Top". The Gibson Les Paul was designed by.. you guessed it... a guy named Les Paul. He also designed the Gibson SG (watch ANY ACDC video, Angus played the SG exclusively during his career). But Les Paul didnt like the SG and told Gibson to not put his name anywhere on it. So it was named SG for Solid Guitar. Les' wife, Mary Ford who also played guitar, loved the SG. She had a white SG with gold hardware. Les Paul and Mary Ford were a musical act back then and performed together on stage. Just to irritate Les, Mary had a little plastic piece made to fit right where the fretboard ends and the top of the body begins. Its a very highly visible spot. The piece had a trapezoidal shape and had 'Les Paul Custom' engraved into it. Les was not thrilled about it. Les Paul also saved Epiphone Guitars. Epiphone is owned by Gibson but made over seas. Back in the day Epiphone was about to go under. Les knew people at Epiphone and wanted to help them stay afloat. Les went to Gibson and suggested they buy them and make them a licensee of Gibson products. So today, you can buy a Gibson Les Paul, made in USA, and very expensive, or you can buy an Epiphone Les Paul, made in China (or Korea if you can find a good old one), and are more affordable. Both look great, the difference is the quality of the craftsmanship and build. Gibson's are pricey but are well worth it.

Apart from the singer and drummer, this was a different lineup than the one that recorded the original version of this song in 1983, but the people you see in this clip are all worthy of recognition. So, here we go:
RONNIE JAMES DIO (vocals) got his amazing set of pipes from playing trumpet as a child. He started releasing rock singles as a teenager in the late 50s, originally as a bass player and/or singer. In the early 70s he had his first break with hard rock band Elf, that in 1975 merged into Rainbow - a subset of the Deep Purple family tree. Rainbow gave Ronnie a reputation, but it was after he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1979 that he truly became a star. His time in Black Sabbath remains one of the most cherished eras in the band's history. It did, however, end acrimoniously, after which Ronnie formed his own band, Dio, debuting in 1983 with the album "Holy diver" from which this song is picked. "Holy diver" was an instant super classic, and Ronnie remained, through good and bad times, one of the most beloved and admired heavy metal musicians for the rest of his career and life. There's LOTS more to be told, but this will do for now. He succumbed to stomach cancer in 2010.
VINNY APPICE (drums) followed Ronnie from Black Sabbath to Dio in 1982 and stayed on for, not all, but most incarnations of the Dio band. He also followed Ronnie for two reunions of that Black Sabbath lineup - the latter of which, a massive success, under the monicker Heaven And Hell, since the Ozzy version of Black Sabbath remained active at the time. Vinny is the younger brother of another heavy metal drumming legend, Carmine Appice.
SCOTT WARREN (keyboards) was another trusted ally of Ronnie's from the early 90s and onwards. He has a background in the hair metal scene and his earlier employers include Warrant, of "Cherry pie" fame.
DOUG ALDRICH (guitar) was a guitar contender for a loooong time - he was, for instance, considered as a replacement for Ace Frehley in Kiss in 1982, but missed out because of his youth - until he finally got his recognition in this lineup of Dio in the early 00s. He was however fired, for accepting an offer to tour with Whitesnake at a time when Dio needed his services. He remained in Whitesnake for a very long time, and that is where he got truly famous. He and Ronnie did, thankfully, reconcile before Ronnie's death. Doug left Whitesnake in 2015 to focus on his own band Burning Rain, and has since also joined modern day supergroups Dead Daisies and Revolution Saints.
RUDY SARZO (bass) is nothing short of a living legend. One of the most prolific bass players in heavy metal history, but in his early days he was not taken seriously by large parts of the audience because he was just too damn good looking. Bizarre, but true. In his old age, this is no longer a problem - even if he's still in great shape - and his resumé speaks for itself. Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Yngwie Malmsteen and Blue Öyster Cult - to name but a few.

Keep going !!

You should react to Stargazer, by Rainbow. You'll know how sounded a young Dio.

Been a metal fan since 1980 been to loads of shows. Here is the deal my top tier of live concerts I have seen are Iron Maiden and Dio PLUS Jinjer and Babymetal. There are great new bands out there as well. Of course I still love the bands and songs I grew up on but don’t sleep on newer bands. For some reason Japan has really stepped forward and has loads of great metal bands right now.

    A relisten and new comment
Dio and Ozzy had a lot in common. Dio replaced Ozy in Black Sabbath and they both left Sabbath for a solo career.
In song styles, they have much in common in voice very little. Completely different singing styles.

Also want to add, I grew up listening to Ozzy and Dio and love them both, but there is no comparison at all between Ozzy & Ronny. Ronny is so much better. Listen to him earlier in his career. Dio 🤟🤟🤟

So you said here you want to react to more old school metal huh? Why haven't you? RJD is the godfather of metal🤘. Need to see him in Rainbow (Stargazer) Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell) along with other old school bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Judas Priest etc.
