My Sentimental Items | Storage + Tips

- I only have 40 more days until I leave for India and officially start Nomad life! Here is everything I own that I won't be carrying with me when I return to the states this summer and start travel nursing.
My tips for downsizing sentimental items:
1. Realize that the memory/event/person that an item reminds you of is just a reminder and you don't have to have something physical to remember those times.
2. Consider keeping part of something instead of the whole.
3. It's awesome to have some sentimental things that you treasure and bring a smile to your face, just make sure your stuff does own you and the amount isn't overwhelming.
4. Take it slow when it comes to sentimental things.
5. Display items what can also be used for decor on walls and shelves.
6. When it comes to taking in new sentimental things keep items small when possible.

For my current lifestyle, it’s to only own things I love and need + have everything I own fit in my car (minus my couch and mattress) so I can move easily. - Развлечения
So great to see a minimalist example of keeping random sentimental items like that!
Caitlin Glover I would love to see other people make a video like this too!
The best minimalist channel.
not to be all sad here but this made me cry thinking of things I lost in a major tornado. It's so true that these types of things are what a person misses in that situation and not the fancy furnishings or electronics. I miss old concert tees, love letters, photos and my yearbooks...not a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer in my favorite color or $$ boots! That stuff is replaceable.
I feel the same about all my baby pictures :(
"I have shot glasses from when I tried to collect shot glasses" oh lord, same here
Isn't it sweet how we all, no matter when/where we grew up, have very very similar kinds of items of sentimental value? I have two of these boxes, one in each of the two countries where I have roots (parents' house - country #1, my home - country #2) - I've thought of merging them but I don't want to lose that piece of attachment to my home country.
Lovely box! ☺️
As a tip, one thing I did after graduating college was scan and upload all 4 years of my notes onto my computer (Google drive), then threw away the physical copies. That way, I could still review them if needed and not carry them around when I move from place to place. Maybe it's something you could look into :)
I also live the “minimal life”
Before this style of life I used to keep every single ticket or items that I got attached to. But I didn’t know where to put it , and wasting space. So I started a bullet journal , and also it was like a type of diary, and divided every page in 7 small boxes and in each box I write what happened that day, and if something important or I had like something small that I could glue to my BJ, I would stick it in that day. I have been doing this since I’m in middle school , Right now I’m in college and I have like 4 bullet journal completely full, like 2 years of my life written in each BJ . It’s really amazing reading them and remembering everything because of all I have glued or written.
I had journals exaaaactly like the bumble that I would exchange with like 4-6 friends at any given point and it operated like a chatroom. One person would have it for a class then would pass it to someone in the hallway who would pass it on and then we all took turns taking it home. It’s filled with stuff about music and twilight and we also drew endless comics.
We also gave ourselves nicknames in the journal.
Aundrea Davis same I was Tibby for some reason and the twilight phase was toooooo real lol
This was so interesting to watch and compare to my own sentimental box that I’ve been putting together while decluttering. I’m a year younger than you so I also have a binder full of notes my best friend and I would pass back and forth, little comics, and etc. Honestly feel bad for the current generation that will never know the fun of secretly passing notes during school 😂
Ursa Allen same here, passing notes was such a huge part of being in school for so many people. Texting isn’t the same
i would love to hear about your plant medicine ceremonies if you’re comfortable w sharing that!!
You are so encouraging in the way you can stay in the moment. Not just with things but with people and feelings. Many blessings on your journeys! You sharing this journey with us helps to motivate and inspire 💙
S Maddox thank you it’s definitely been work and I still have room for improvement but I’m happy with how much better I’ve gotten
You've got some really cool things saved.
May you have a great time in India!!
I wish I could fit all of my sentimental things in just one bin. Maybe one day, probably not though.
Dude YES passing notes and drawing comics with my friends was the best! This girl and I used to take turns drawing each panel and it'd devolve into characters being killed off and resurrected at random, lol.
YOU REALLY LIVE A SIMPLE LIFE I HAVE A STORAGE UNIT THAT I HAVE BEEN PAYING 100$ FOR A YEAR NOW. .IAM ABOUT TO TAKE WHAT I REALLY NEED AND LET THEM SELL THE REST ...JUST THINKING ABOUT IT TRIGGERS MY ANITXIY I CAN'T DEAL.....2019 IS GOING TO BE A MINAMILIST YEAR FOR ME LESS MESS AND LESS STRESS.
I was a huge huge note passer in Middle School. I kept all of them over the years no matter how many times I declutter. I've been feeling guilty lately about them because I keep them even though I don't read them. Seeing a minimalist who still has chosen to keep them makes me feel better about myself. I'm glad you mentioned the fact that no one passes notes anymore. It makes me feel more special about keeping mine. Thank you
Sentimental items are awsome in moderation!!
this is really cute and reassures me that being a minimalist doesnt mean being a blank, empty human with no past or attatchments x
This was great to see! I am incredibly sentimental and don’t consider meaningful items clutter. It’s so nice to hear a minimalist talk about the keepsakes that matter!
Best wishes to you on your journey! Congratulations for pursuing your goal of becoming a traveling nurse!
It’s funny - the more I watch your videos, the more I realize we have in common. I too am going into nursing (just passed my boards and starting residency next week!), your birthday is the day before mine, and from what I can tell about the things you’ve shared, a lot of our ideals align.
I think it’s awesome what you’re doing and I truly do enjoy seeing the things you post in all its authenticity. Thanks for being true to yourself and letting us have a glimpse into your world.
Shabrita happy late birthday 💚
Janell Kristina Thank you! Happy belated birthday to you too - I hope you enjoyed it ✨
I raised my kids in the 90's. We had large calendars to keep track of our busy lives. For some reason, I can't throw them away. I have no problem parting with most things.
I love the bumble! What a clever, creative and meaningful friendship idea 😊
This is the sweetest video! I am so inspired by this. I was surprised to see that you kept notes from 5th/6th grade. I made me feel a lot better for keeping what I keep 😂
Real cool stuff you got there it shows how much you appreciate the little things in life.
Wow! Thanks for sharing, Janelle. My birthfamily lives in Arlington and are super Christian. Explains a lot. I was adopted and grew up in Houston. I appreciate you showing the "real" here. I am still fresh on my minimalism journey and appreciate your insight. Thanks again
This made me realize that almost all of the things I’m attached to are relatively new, most of the stuff you have I’ve thrown out yet I have more things than you and now I wish I had kept older things
I keep my sentimental stuff in two under-the-bed storage boxes, with a few larger items stored in my suitcase. I've donated stuff from high school to my hometown's historical association.
This helped to get to you know you more, and you are just awesome. The bumble is so cute!
😂 Turning each other into zombies is one interesting way to conflict resolution
S0dap0pb0ttle 😂
How do you stay minimalist when it comes to traveling to new places and getting souvenirs and such? I feel like I always want to bring souvenirs home like sweatshirts and T-shirt’s and shot glasses and magnets! The list never ends! But just as a reminder as the first time I have traveled somewhere but like you said it adds up quick!!
You're little bumble book is too cute!! Love it!!
this makes me miss all my childhood notes and things that at the time, i didn't have the presence of mind to save. i'm glad you have these things and that they bring you joy. i wish you safe travels in india!
I love this, thank you for sharing your treasures with us 🌸🌸💕
Wow Janell your notes are so neat! Even years later I still have trouble sorting out my school notes and making them easy to read and access!
Very cool - thanks for sharing! 🙂
Yay! Love this idea another great video 💜💜💜🌵💜💜💜
Reminds me of a lot of my sentimentals, especially the notes! I’m a year older than you and I didn’t realize note passing was a thing of the past. Also great idea to put everything in a storage bin :) definitely doing that!
I really liked this! I have a bench that I put all of my sentimental items, but I still have more at my parents house. I need to get the rest of it.
In so many ways you are so brave.
This is cool. Thanks for sharing.
Best advice I ever took: a lot of the time, pictures of sentimental items will work just as well as the real thing, and don't take up space. I've kept maybe five physical cards that were super important to me, but have digital pictures of probably 100+ more from when I was growing up. Just snap a picture of inside and out, and you can collect them all in digital form with no guilt
Im glad you did this video bc minimalism looks diff for every person and its cool you kept what you wanted. Fyi your prom dress was cute 😍😍😍😍
I really liked this video! I send myself postcards from most of my travels. So while small, it's starting to add up. Eeek Have a great time in India!
I would LOVE to hear more about your plant medicine experiences!
I’m 3 hours from Houston! I will make that quick drive to come see you!!! Lol (and my family of course )❤️❤️❤️
That was so cute, made me wish I had a friend like you in middle school.
Thank you for this great video. :)
Ah I love your videos they're so informative + fun, enjoy your trip to India!
Dianne Roquia thank you!
Beautiful .
Haha wow I was showing my boyfriend this video this morning and said “this really pretty minimalist girl I have been watching!” And then you said you were from Houston! I live in Houston (close to med center)! It took me four years to get rid of my prom dress. I donated it to the Giving Gown Foundation in Houston - really cool organization!
I kept my nursing notes and books for a while too after graduation, but then I realized I can find everything on the internet. Those nursing books were just taking up too much space.
Chenni Cheung I’m still
So conflicted if I should keep them! I have them in case I start working on another unit and I learn best from my own notes but still I’ll probably get rid of them in the next year or two if I don’t use them
@@JanellKristina it's definitely up to you, but trust me, you will still be googling topics even with the books. I still search on the internet about nursing topics, skills, medications after being a nurse for 16 years. My rule is if I can find the answers online and faster, I get rid of the hard copies.
Also I got rid of my books after realizing I hadn't touched it since I graduated. Maybe give yourself.a time frame, if you haven't opened them after a year, maybe it's time lol.
Lovely! I guess I've been one of those weird people that doesn't like to hold onto things, and sometimes I wish I had. I don't have a lot of sentimental items, but my mom has a ton of my old poetry and projects from when I was younger in her closet.
Wow your 23 and so mature. I hope you keep the balance you have in your life and spread it to others
OMG I love this video so much!!! Some of the stuff I have it too, especially the notebook, but my friend and I used to write poems too. A lot of them they were really baaaad =)) but still funny to remember! Love the video Janell! xoxo
wow i wish i can have a nomadic minimal life after i graduate as well, have a lovely journey and stay safe
you're so sweet and mindful. every time i watch one of your videos i get a boost of happiness :) have fun on the trip to India!
also, i have the same bday as you
sofya marc happy late birthday!
yo! Stumbled accidentally on your channel cause of new camera I got canon m50 . But got in love with your spirit!
5:20 That's very sweet.
Same AF, I still have old notes and assignments among other things, I think I have condensed it down a little to a couple boxes like yours, BUT then there's all the drawings & poems and stuff that I haven't been able to completely rid myself of
Very real and interesting
Thank you for the video . Organizing things is hard for me. All the things u shown shown is had a meaning to you . That's really important for me to realize when I go through more things. I will miss your videos . I look forward to more of them. Do u keep cards ?
I'm looking at her smile, it's the smile that I should have when I'm looking at my own sentimentals. I'm still on the process of decluttering more sentimental items. It's so hard, but year after year, some of the sentimental item isn't sentimental anymore.
Yay Houston! My old stomping grounds!
I’ve been watching your channel since you were at 29k and love your videos. This is the first time I’ve commented because I lived in Kingwood for 8 years! My brother went to Kingwood Park HS as well! He’s 25 so you guys might know each other haha what a weird coincidence!
You editing is on point
Alix Duke huge compliment, thank you!!
Somehow it never occurred to me to keep parts of sentimental items. That’s really going to help me as I declutter
interesting :) have a great time in india!
my sentimental items fit in a shoebox, not really a sentimental person. digitalized some, but I actually never look at any of the items
Thanks for sharing this! I’m super excited for you and your adventures ahead! Will you be posting? I sure hope so. Your content is my FAVORITE on RUclips right now.
D M yes but probably after I get back!
Where is that top from?
You looked so beautiful in your prom dress! Stunning! But beautiful now too ;)
Other people have probably already said this but have you considered scanning the paper items to keep digitally? I did that with a giant box of all my artwork and a diary. Took a while but I'm glad I took the time to do that. I store mine on Google Drive so I can access it anywhere.
Such a great channel
Benjamin Sergeant thanks dude!
Hey! I am an RA too!!!!
Keeping just the plaques of trophies is suh a good idea. Because the name and award we won it for is still there but the generic trophy cup really isn't necessary. Especially if it's from primary or secondary school which when your older, isn't really that much of an achievement to showcase in your apartment. But you still wanna keep the award cos you worked hard for it then.
I've downsized my sentimentals to a small hand briefcase/suitcase thing. Still got some stuff I just didn't want to get rid of because I felt like I didn't have enough sentimentals. I realised that I held onto my sentimentals and tried to use them again and again that they got ruined and we're thrown out when we moved house, so now I just feel like the sentimentals I would cherish are gone and I'm holding on to non-sentimentals to remind me of the sentimentals. If that makes any sense.
my friends and I used to have our version of a bumble in hs too lol
Sentimental items are the hardest for me to get rid of. I just made a video where I decluttered 581 items. It seemed like I considered nearly everything as sentimental for some reason. It will take me a long time to be able to get to a point where I truly feel like a minimalist.
Wow I'm in Dallas hope I run into you someday 😀
There’s this idea I came to after being a minimalist for a while. previously, if an item had a “decent” memory attached to it I would automatically decide “keep“. Now I recognize that, and then decide whether it really makes me happy or has a really good feeling attatched. (Just because I remember getting this wooden box when I was young, should I actually keep it and decide to move it from house to house again and again? Have I even used it/looked at it/read it/THOUGHT about it in the last 2-3-5 years?)
a lot of my sentimental items are things i hang up on my walls like concert tickets and pictures and all that
Another really good video! Thanks so much and good luck with being a travel nurse! Are you thinking of doing a video about it once you're back from India? ❤️
Bea Alcober i might! Nursing is just so much of my life as it is it’s not really something I’m passionate about making videos about
Janell Kristina You make a good point, do whatever you enjoy and it'll always be good imo 😊
I love your simple, fitted, high necked top where did you get it?
My birthday is the day after yours ❤️
Can you share where you get your halter tops from? All the ones you wear are so good and I love halters.
You brought the cold weather with you. 😂😂😂
Dont get rid of those things!
You said Houston and i yelled "HTOWN HOLD IT DOWWNNN"
Bibiana Perez YAAS
honestly it seem alot stuff to me, I have almost 0 sentimental items :P I simply don't like to keep such stuff, weirdly looking at something sentimental doesn't give me nice feelings, but rather sad - that someone or something passed/time passed etc, so I don't feel like keeping anything like.
What will you do with your hammie Son while you're away? Xx I've got ratties and I feel like I can't travel because I can't abandon them.
You and your friend from high school sound exactly like me and my best friend lol. We were really into halo so him and I would draw halo comics of us throwing plasma grenades and using rocket launchers lol.
Megan Selby you and your friend sound epic
I rather enjoyed that🤔😊
What are your thoughts on scanning in all the photos from someone’s childhood instead of having hard copies?
Megan P I have done this a lot a just keep hard copies of my favorite but I need to do another round of this soon
Janell Kristina thank you! Hope you are doing well! :)
Hey, did you consider house sitting? You get paid as well. I'm happy for you, enjoy India😊
I don’t know how many things are necessarily sentimental to me, so everything must go...lol
My birthday is also in February 😊 It's the 3rd.
That's my brother's birthday and my friend's too 😊 Happy almost birthday!
@@sorchaoreilly2633 Ohhh wow cool! Happy almost birthday to the both of them 😊😊

We need to travel nurse together I just signed up through Nurse Choice I’m a L&D nurse.
Plant medicine .. Ayahuasca? I'd be very curious to hear about that, even if wasn't what I'm thinking of.
Ha! That was the first thing it came to mind for me too. Ayahuasca is in my future plans
Yes I did two ceremonies last March
Hi Janell..
I just need help with how one can improve their mental health, controlling one's thoughts(esp negative thoughts) and how to believe in one's own spiritual path( if that makes sense) . Will mean alot if u respond❤
Constantia Makanga I highly recommend reading the untethered soul and a the power of now! Both books helped me separate myself from my thoughts and helped me on my path 💚
Thank you so much for your response. Can u recommend a website i can Look them up on?
