@testing, I don’t have a dishwasher and there’s 5 of us living at home. It get easier, I always put the kettle on after making a big dinner and it’s in the oven, I use the time it takes to boil the kettle to wipe down the kitchen, put things away, wash any few things. Just makes it easier afterwards.

I love this tip and I also know I like hot water and if I let the dishes sit too long, then I have to put my hand it cold water and that feels EXTRA gross to me and I don’t want to do it. So I get it done while it’s hot still.

I use mental reframing hacks. For example, I “save energy “ by putting something away after I use it (move it once) vs putting it down and then putting it way (move it twice). I fold clothes out of the dryer so they don’t wrinkle and I don’t have to iron. I make my bed in the morning because when I get into a pretty bed at night it makes me feel like someone loves me and has taken care of me.

The cleaning hack that helps me is to improve the kitchen every time I go in there. It doesn't have to be much. Maybe the pan from making my oatmeal has now soaked enough to release that residue. Ok. Run the brush around inside, dump the water, add hot soapy water, finish cleaning it, dry and put away. Done. Improvement in 2 or 3 minutes. My rule is you don't have to make the kitchen spotless. Just better, because better is good.

I want it to be nice and clean and decluttered for Easter. I am just having my usual Sunday Family Dinner crowd but I want it to be really nice. Tonight it is much better than it was this morning. And thanks to your comment I can tell myself and that's good 😊

I do this too - I use the time while I'm waiting for my toast to pop or my porridge or dinner to cook, means the kitchen always has clear surfaces which makes it a lot less stressful a space to be in. I've also been thinking better is good lately, it's a great cure for perfectionism. Even the smallest thing counts as better, it's a win!

Yes!! The secret for me is to have arranged „in between spaces“ for all stuff that might pile up during the week while in a hurry - and have a routine on weekends to deal with them. These „in between spaces/homes“ have to be easy to reach, but look better than „throw onto floor“, e.g. I have rags for my clothes on the wall all over the house. Clothes do land there and I collect them on sat morning. This way I keep my floors tidy.

Sorry about the migraines as they can certainly derail everything else. I worry that if you go to getting food delivered, it will be lower quality and make you feel worse (high fat, high salt, high sugar, less fiber, etc). I do a menu plan based on my fridge/pantry supplies which cuts down on wasted food. I also cook enough for 3 meals so the second day I have no cooking and 1 meal goes in the freezer for when I don’t want to cook. That way you only cook 2 times a week. On my grocery shopping day I make an easy charcuterie meal and cut lots of meats, cheeses, veggies and fruit which I can then eat for lunches throughout the week. It takes planning but so much healthier than take-out (and cheaper). Good luck! I love watching you tackle your home and others. You are a kind, gentle soul.

I love you and your channel, been subscribed for several years. Just observing, seems it gets a bit untidy because things don't get put away after using them. A tip I learned from a neat freak channel, he says "If it takes less than 1 minute - just do it". Better to spend a minute now, a few times a day, than to spend a few hours once a week to do it all at once; and it's not so overwhelming. I think doing the dishes every day is a necessity, keeps them under control. I guess since I hate doing the dishes, I'd rather do them to get it over with.

My hacks when living alone where to clean up as I go/when I finished(especially when I lived in my tiniest flat). I also set aside 1hour Saturday morning to do the weekly tidy of bathroom, toilet, whole flat vacuum, floor mop, dusting and strip and make bed. Then depending on time and schedule Saturday or Sunday afternoon was washing and then I would batch cook a couple of dishes, that way during the week I didn’t have to cook meals nor clean up pots and pans and dishes. And if I ate out of the storage container that I put the meal in, even less washing up( my most hated task is dishes😂😂😂) I too had my stuff paired right down…except for my sewing/office room, that was my one cheat (it was my Monica closet😂😂😂though my friends would say otherwise, but to me it was my untidy place).
Also watching this show I feel that the returned laundry that smelt so bad has literally thrown your life into disarray!!! I have noticed less posts and shows this past few weeks and it has made me worry that you have really been unwell due to that laundry debacle. I am glad, but sorry(for the clothes that you probably loved) that you are letting those clothes go because whatever chemicals they used it was obviously very toxic.

Carla, I think you really said it…simplify. I have so many things in my life super simplified that it makes accessing these things easy. I decluttered my makeup drawer while my husband rearranged the furniture last Saturday. Less makeup and cosmetics (which is my weakness since I work in the beauty industry) makes getting ready easy. Rearranging our space has made it more inviting & relaxing. It has given us a fresh perspective. By the way…vacuum cleaners are an issue for me. I am committed to investing in a high quality “I will suck up the earth and its surrounding planets” vacuum cleaner this year. 😂 Cocker Spaniel hair and my hair have literally ruined 2 cleaners 🥴 Preparing meals has really changed in our home. We eat super simple meals when we do cook. I buy organic ground turkey, grass fed ground beef, organic chicken and veggies. I have a small amount of other stuff like rice, pasta, beans. When we eat out during the week we grab vegan (clean as possible) even though we are not vegan. When I cook its chicken/veggie, ground beef mixed with veggies (frozen), ground turkey/pasta w/veggies. My brain ain’t working with elaborate meals these days. I rather watch Carla Project videos or read 😊😊😊😊❤ Hugs from the desert 🏜️

The one thing that really helped me was making a kitchen reset a daily non-negotiable. I figured what time of day I have the best energy and then established the routine. I know there's no hope for me in the evening so I paired the habit with eating breakfast, which is something I do every day. After I eat breakfast, while my tea is steeping, I catch up on dishes and wipe the counter and stovetop. That's my baseline... if that's all I get done in a day, so be it but I make damn sure to do it because it gives me such peace to at least have a functional kitchen. I reward myself with a tea break and then try to do another cleaning task in the kitchen (wiping appliances, cleaning some cabinets, a shelf of the fridge, the floor or even just a small section of it, etc.). At some point in the day when I use the washroom, I try to clean 1 aspect of the bathroom. If you don't think you can live by the tidy as you go method, you either need to do a timed tidy each day or just adopt the philosophy of making a room a little bit better before you leave it. A portable dishwasher might help too!

    Hi Carla,
You asked how we manage our cleaningtime. I manage my cleaningtime by doing all the small things, kitchen countertop, washing, bathroom and toilet right away so nothing piles up. I just do the things right away while I am using that space. When I cook I clean the kitchen, when I shower I clean the shower, when I am on the coach and get something to drink I take the things to the kitchen, etc etc . And also minimize the stuff I use and have. I pack away the things I do not use often. For instance; in my kitchen there are only a small amount of things I use every day. In the cupboard my nice crockery and silverware wich I use when I host. When I organise like that I only have to clean the floors ones in a while and everything stays tidy. ❤️❤️ Hope this inspires a little. Barbara

  • @ilonadenise
    @ilonadenise 2 месяца назад +6

I focus on a few priorities every day, the things that tend to pile up fast:
-Make bed (so it doesn't become a dumping ground)
-Laundry (if possible one load a day, if not then at least everything in a hamper by the end of the day)
    -Dishes
-Wipe kitchen counters (easy to do once the dishes are gone)
Apart from that I try to never leave a room empty handed. Going to the kitchen? I bring my dirty dishes to the sink. Going upstairs? I bring any papers to my computer for administration. Going outside? I bring my trash to the bin. This way, it stays pretty tidy without having to tackle major piles after a while. If it's already tidy, cleaning then becomes a small, manageble task and I focus on one or two rooms per day for that.
Finally, a great tip I read somewhere is to spend some time organizing so that things are easy to put away. Make the hamper easy to reach, make the bin easy to reach, put the most used dishes in the easiest to reach places in the kitchen, etc. Hope this helps!

I live in a 20 ft travel trailer and have 2 large shedders (dogs). That means I have very little space and everything that is left out is in the way. I declutter every few months and spend 15 min each day cleaning to keep the major dirt down. Just the necessities and very little else. But I am a minimalist at heart and do not hold onto items for sentimental reasons so this makes it much easier for me.

15 minutes is my main home hack: 15 minutes of tidying and cleaning a day. No matter how tired or exhausted or lacking time, I can make myself do 15 minutes. I mean, it is just 15 minutes and afterwards I get to lounge as long as I want.
The important thing is to actually limit yourself to 15 minutes. And use a timer

I shared a house with a woman who used to say “I am lazy. So, I only do things once. If I take it out, I put it back. If I took it off a clothes hanger and it’s clean I hang it back up on the clothes hanger. If it’s dirty I put it in the laundry basket.” What she told me was so helpful. I also think she was self disciplined. Her room and the communal areas were always tidy. It was so peaceful. I have taken her words to heart and just put things away where they belong. A place for everything and everything in its place! Who would have thought? It makes life really easy. My thought about ‘selling’ things is - don’t. Give it away. The “cost” of all that excess cluttering your space is greater than releasing it back to the universe for someone else to use or for it to be finished. It also helps others to own things you don’t have a place for. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Your videos are the best. You are so calm and relaxed and have good music.
What helps me the most , to have my house in order, is to have a designated place for every item.
And then reset every area all the time because I immediately see what's in the wrong place.
I think also that there must be a system for garbage and recycling otherwise the garbage will be left everywhere. The same thing with laundry.
Figure out a system that works for you. I have a hamper ( IKEA, Filur it's called, it's a white plastic box with lid and it has a good size)for white and one for colour. You can have even more, they don't take up much space.
Sorry to hear about your migraine. ❤

I participated in a weekly cleaning routine with my family as a child and youth. I learned to clean, but I never liked it. As an adult I have established my own routines and conciously accepted and made peace with the fact that cleaning and laundry never gets finished, you don’t have to like it but if you can learn to like it that is an advantage, as tidying and cleaning is something you must work into your days and weeks for the rest of your life. I want my home to be relaxing and safe for myself and my family and ready for guests at any time without us having to panic clean. Also: Music helps. And deciding on some level of good enough.

Pots last. Once the dishes sit in the hot water, they are really fast to wash and you are not wasting water by having it constantly running. I agree, grocery prices are crazy. ❤

I don't leave things - as soon as I see something that needs done, I do it - that way things don't build up and you're spending hours doing everything all at once. Little things like putting clothes away as soon as you take them off is a big one for me. Also I really reduced the amount of clothing I own and I live in Canada where we have 4 sometimes brutal seasons...I just don't have that much clothing as you would expect. also before bed I do a tidy up - after dinner, dishes are done immediately. Tip: Stack something you don't like doing with something you do. For me, I don't like cleaning but I love audiobooks. I want to listen to an audiobook a month which is normally 8--15 hours. That's about 30 minutes a day (I miss some days). I normally listen to my audiobook and clean. Most of the time it's only 15 minute to 30 minute sprints throughout the week, sometimes twice a day, but I end up keeping things pretty maintained. Normally work in the morning and before bed in the evenings. I too, hate dishes and let them pile up till the weekend. It's one of the pleasures of being an adult is not having to do my dishes every night. 😋

    2. Realized how much i “think” about needing to do something versus getting it done. Example dishes I may have thought about for a few days but when I actually do it is only 20 min 😮 I remind myself the drain of the stress thinking about what needs to be done and that is less time when I actually just do it 😅 often motivates me to just act

I do try to clean up as I go along when I cook. I do empty out the fridge and clean it before ordering my groceries, I order groceries to save myself time and money, going to the grocery store always eats up more than I wanted to invest and impulse purchases are hard for me to resist and I still feel like the majority of my free time is spent cooking, cleaning and doing laundry.

To help with keeping on top of cluttered areas for me, is trying to put away the item right after using it or if that can’t be done, because I’m running out the door, I have thought about setting a timer for 5-10 minutes everyday to reset my home. Even if I didn’t get everything done, it would be more than if I had not done it at all and then, at the end of the week I would have less to manage. ❤

Oh Samson you little heartbreaker! Honestly I am still looking for the same answers. Forme its the kitchen I get so overwhelmed in - your kitchen at the beginning happens quickly for me. I create habits but find a bout of exhaustion or nasty migraine causes me to put it off till tomorrow then old bad habits kick in. The main area is thankfully easy to pick up and straighten - like you say even just putting all dishes in the sink, laundry into the machine and making the bed can transform the space. I tend to use songs rather than timers i put on a playlist/album and use that as a timer. Anything to make it less repetitive or easier I am all for! X

Since you asked for hacks: it took me years to develop, but I go to bed with a clean (tidy) kitchen, including sweeping the floor and I empty the kitchen trash when walking my dog at night. I prep my coffee, i.e. water in the tea kettle, ready to go and filtered water jugs full. (we use the French press system). In the mornings, I use paper towels and vinegar water to clean the toilet and sink. We use paper towels to dry our hands. We also have a hand towel. So the paper towels are already in the bathroom, and I keep a vinegar/water spray bottle in both the bathroom and the kitchen so no excuses. I empty the trash in the bathroom, when I take the dog out before going to work. That way if I have guests who come home after work, I know the bath is clean for them. The first time I watched the fly lady and she said she wiped down her toilet and sink, in the mornings, I thought you gotta be kidding, I am just trying to get to work. But coming home to clean toilet and sink, really makes it worth. Obviously I can let that go from the comments below, but I have been sick the past week, not an excuse just a reason and giving myself some slack. Best wishes!

I'm struggling with motivation and you just helped me a TON. I used to be such a clean anal person but life happens and I've lost that drive. This really helped! Thank you for being so raw and real. Love the puppers!

For perfume smelling clothes, I find the two most effective solutions to be:
    1. To wear it (Yuck, but if it is a loved garment you can have someone else, who isn't bothered by perfume, wear it for a while. It takes 5-7 wears in my experience).
    2. To leave it out in the weather for a couple of months. Sun and rain, wind, warmth and frost. Works really well, but it needs to be very exposed.
I almost exclusively buy second hand clothes and this is my experience of many years.

I think you’re absolutely right! Some of the pieces I’m leaving outside and it’s been a month and it’s still not there yet. One of my pants I’ve been trying to wear and it’s slowly starting to change but I don’t know that I can do it for much else. ❤️

My time management tip: if something takes less than a minute, I do it right then. I also have trash cans in every room of my house so I don’t have to walk far to throw something away. Love your videos!

I like doing small tasks while waiting for something else - for example, wipe down a counter while the coffee machine is making my morning coffee, or empty the dishwasher while waiting for the oven to preheat when making dinner (or clean a few dishes in the sink for those who don't have a dishwasher). This makes it easier to stay on top of things for me.

I could tell things have been tough by the state of your home and just the general low energy level of the video. Thank you for keeping it real - I very much appreciated you putting your vulnerability out there. We all have those hard days/weeks. Your video encouraged me to stick it out, even when you really don't feel like it. Such strong will and grit you have - very inspiring.
Samson is a real empathetic friend. He is so in tune with your state of mind and emotion. You are so blessed to have each other. He wouldn't let you out of his sight .. all through the end of your video. I just really want to hug and kiss him for taking such good care of you, Carla... Thank you for the video... I needed this today. ❤️.

Carla, thank you for sharing real kitchen clutter. Consider trying oven cooked meals. I learned that when cooking for one, I make something can be cooked in the oven, so while it is cooking, I clean up the mess I made and then when it is ready I have food and a clean kitchen. Also, my grandmother shared her secret for air drying the larger dishes especially cookware. She would put them on the eyes of her gas stove to finish drying. They aren't in your dishware rinse rack and then are ready to use if you need them. I have broken myself of letting dishes pile up. It took me decades to master clean as I go, and you are younger than me, so sending best wishes for that. When I do have a large pile, I start with big dishes, and put them on the stove to dry. By the time the others are finished washing the big dishes are dry. Also, by getting the largest out of the way first it looks like less and helps me feel better about the mess. Thanks again for sharing hope my suggestions are received in the way I mean them, as helpful hints.

Sorry about the migraines. They're such a setback😢
I so agree to the single cooking part. It's such an expensive hassle and the tidying up afterwards... 😮
Why are our kitchen and bathroom always a challenge ? My brain understands that the items aren't so much and putting them away to their designed place is doable, but our heart screams "no, I'm overwhelmed, let's close the door and continue tomorrow" .
One positive thought at the end of my comment: I kind of feel like a proud parent when I see that the number of subscribers increased. Congratulations 😊 love your videos❤
