COVID was a huge trauma to most people. Her need to buy and hoard food was shared by many, most not having the courage to show it in this way. Her urge was prompted by a desire to keep her family safe and fed. To save money, by getting things on sale for a future date, it just got out of control. I'm happy that she's taking steps to get her house and life back under control so she can enjoy herself and her home.
Kudos for Carla for helping in this way !!! Best wishes

Dear Carla, it's so great your sister lets us be part of her journey💜.
My husband and I also got caught up in the hoarding frenzy for a while. We are from Germany and during the pandemic was the first time since the war that some things were actually not available. Sure our grandparents told us about the shortages they faced but to see empty shelves in the supermarket with your own eyes... I think that caused a lot of fear in a lot of people.
I'm glad my husband and I realised what was happening to us, we agreed on some rules and now we're down to a normal level of stuff again. But it also gave me some insight into how my grandparents and parents feel (mostly subconsciously I think) and why it's so hard to get them to throw stuff away. If the world around you feels so unsure, you just want to hang onto things to make you feel safe and prepared.
Well, we are really looking forward to another video of you and your lovely Family. And especially Samson of course🐾💜

I think you can tell a lot about the anxieties and wants a person is dealing with from their hoard...so much of what your sister has revolves around the themes of wellness and survival, of not wanting to waste anything, and she also seems to have a lot of curiosity new things. Obviously hoarding is a maladaptive way to deal with those impulses, but those are all good impulses. I hope that as she lets go of all the junk, it gives her space to focus on those things in healthier ways.

Very insightful. I never thought about it that way, but yes, all the things she saves are wellness items, food, supplements, exercise equipment and gadgets that will be magic. I have a relative who is a hoarder but what she saves is sentimental items, or things she perceives is sentimental when a lot of other people wouldn’t. If her friend from elementary school 60 years ago scribbled a little picture for her, she saves it.

If you want to keep a large amount of shelf stable food, it needs to be extremely organized, dated to notice, and the oldest pulled forward. Needless to say, you must consistently pull from it to actually use. It is a part time job managing it. Date the items as you bring them into the house and put them away correctly immediately. Otherwise, don’t prep as much.

Carla I do not have a hoarding issue in my home yet I still benefited from this series of videos. So thankful to your sister for her willingness to document her journey. I’m so proud of her and much props to your efforts helping her.

I hope your sister has a big house because I love watching the two of you together and I don’t want it to end! You both are a lot of fun! Tell your niece to roll up her sleeves and join in on the fun. One day these will be cherished memories for her spending time with her grandma and auntie laughing and enjoying each others company ❤

I love the declutter series on your sister's house. And I can't wait for the next episode. When it finally ends, I know I will be really sad and rewatch it all again.😂🥰

One thing I’ve found help impulse or over buying is to decrease my exposure to ads. For example, I no longer use social media and I unsubscribe from ANYTHING. Even brands I like. If I need something I can just go online and find it. I deleted all buying related apps from my phone. I pre order groceries for pick up or delivery to reduce impuse buys. Whatever I know is my weakness, I try to reduce my exposure to that. Not 100% fool proof but it does help!

This is a massive undertaking and I’m guessing your sister is one of many people who, especially since COVID, find themselves in this situation. I’m so glad you are working together on this - it’s a tonne of work and must feel impossible to contemplate! Kudos to all of you. I actually LOVE helping people with this type of thing. I wonder if your sister has a plan for how to maintain because we all know how hard it is to change our habits! Sending love and a standing ovation!

I’ll say this again… It helps tremendously that your sister is in a good space for “letting go”. I admire you both. We've all seen those videos where people get treated badly by family members as they are getting rid of things. This is a much better idea . . two sisters looking at one item at a time and deciding where it goes. There IS no other way. Great channel!!!

Your sister is so brave for sharing all of this. I just wanted to comment that she might enjoy the Hoarder's Heart RUclips channel. Since you mentioned that hoarding might run in your family (it runs in mine too), I'd gently recommend your sister possibly seek counseling to assist her in this journey. She's doing so well, this is not a judgment at all! Again, soooo brave for being public. She'll never know how many people she's helping. 💕

You both are amazing. We all get in over our heads sometimes, it's how we get out that shows our character.
I really appreciate that you are doing this with love and kindness, but also not skirting around the hard facts. Inherited hoarder behavior is so real. Love to your sister!

"...have to make a decision about every item..." Such a reminder that since it is much work to declutter, it's best to REALLY think hard before bringing an item into the house. I'm just starting to do that--it's like a weak muscle that needs to be strengthened.

I love your sister. She reminds me of family members and friends with similar challenges and hopes and dreams, who have sort of made the solution out of buying stuff - exotic food with super powers, exercise equipment that will change your life, all the supplements, etc. It’s so exciting to see her let go. Everything she wants, all the results she’s been trying to purchase, are on the other side of doing this hard work. It’s never about buying, it’s always about doing. ❤️
