    HOLY MOLY when she said, "your surroundings stress you out."
    I recently discovered these feelings for myself not realizing where this stress was coming from and hearing it come out of someone else's mouth is mind-blowing to me.

      Yep, for years I couldn't work out why I would feel anxious and overwhelmed when walking into my house. Fast forward four years of decluttering and the feeling has gone away. I didn't realize these feelings were caused by having too much stuff.

    I still live at my mom's house and the thing is, she's a huge hoarder (food, clothes, random items, I mean, EVERYTHING), and I didn't really realize it when I was younger but now that I do chores like an adult (not just """cleaning""" my bedroom lol) and actually care about my environment, it stresses me out so much... It's a weird way to put it but I feel like everything being so full around makes my mind unable to relax? Like, I can't relax in such a full space. It's not even messy, it's just that we have too many things; things we don't need, superficial things, things that take space that we don't even use...! It's crazy. Both my mom and my sister are hoarders and they are often wondering "how I can live having so little things" haha. I actually have just enough ! I use everything I have until I can't anymore and need a new one. Plus, I treat myself once in a while and it's enough for me. In my opinion, being too materialistic and always feeling the NEED to have/buy something means you're trying to fill some kind of void (I think that's the case with my mom and my sister anyway). Feeling good in your head/body and learning to appreciate and be satisfied with what you have is essential to be healthy in my opinion.
    I can't wait to have a home on my own where I can feel comfortable !

      my mother's the same as yours! I'm trying to make her read KonMarie book, just to have a light start about her own possessions, but she doesn't want to give away clothes or books. I think that it is something deeper than a simple amount of objects, it's something psychological...

    Hang on a minute. Why does everyone who works shifts beat themselves up about achieving things on their days off? I've just found your channel, I should be asleep pre night shifts!! I'm very guilty of most of the things you mentioned, on my days off I'm running a house, looking after a three year old and exhausted! I get very little time to be alone and deal with clutter. Enjoy your life and don't feel you need to be busy. You of all people should realise that life is precious and live for the moment.

      Storage isn't the solution long term but if you can move things out of your main living space, you can start to feel some of the benefits of living in a less crowded space.
      Think how much you think you need and cut it in half and then box up everything else, and then in a month evaluate. I put away a ton of pans and plates and even silverware and cups and I don't miss them at all. I might even move then on, eventually.
      It's not strictly minimalist, but some things you can rotate, like clothes, if you like variety but want to cut down on consumerism. Cut your wardrobe down to something crazy like 14 items and pack everything up and see how you feel about your tiny wardrobe. Honestly, I may be a faux minimalist, but I think it's better to experiment and find your comfort zone before you just sell everything you own. (And end up buying replacements) of course if you have the funds and don't care about the environment you can give everything away and start from scratch. But I think if you don't change your mindset you'll just be in the same place before long.
      Also changing your mindset about *acquiring* new things, is so under rated. Getting rid of things won't do you any good if you keep bringing new things in.
      Some people really aren't cut out to be minimalists. Some don't like bare surfaces and do like having things in their space. So you for learn what's gonna be right for you.

    I definitely have a minor hoarding problem, but it's because I grew up thinking my family couldn't afford things, when in reality, they discouraged me from buying unnecessary things (young dumb me didn't see that). But that's translated into my "what if" personality. What if I can use this thing later. What if I can repurpose or upcycle this? I don't like the idea of going out to buy something I could've already had if I just hadn't thrown it away in the past. Plus I have a difficult time parting with anything remotely sentimental...ugggh

    Oh my God, I am every single one. Aaagh! I haven't even got kids or pets to blame! But I've been living in the same apartment for 18 years. The more you move the easier it is to be minimalist, for obvious reasons. The older and more settled you get the more you accumulate. It just happens when you're living life. Hobbies especially can take up a lot of paraphernalia, but I'm not the type of person to just sit & watch TV every day. I like to make things, draw, paint, make jewellery & clothes, but they do take up a lot of space. But yeah, you can feel trapped by "stuff"... I need to have a clear out!!

    • @JanellKristina
      @JanellKristina  6 лет назад +2

      I use to be too! And moving definitely helps and I do that a lot

    • @abbreviatedalex2418
      @abbreviatedalex2418 6 лет назад +2

      You don't have to find the time to clear everything out at once! If you feel overtaken by stuff, just start by getting rid of one thing every day. Start really looking at the things you have. My parents recently downsized and they had this problem, where they didn't even know what they had because it just fades into the background of your living space. Start noticing that decorative collection of baskets on top of your kitchen cabinets, or something on your bathroom counter that's been there so long you don't even see it anymore. Then think, do I really need this thing? Do I use it? Do I love it? If you don't, find another home for it. Grab a big cardboard box and put one thing in it every day, and when it's full, take it to a donation center. It'll get easier and easier as you do it more and more, and before you know it, you'll start thinking before you even bring things into your home in the first place, and you'll start being able to breathe.

    Great talk. Decision fatigue and analysis paralysis is certainly a thing. Mine is getting better in my decluttering journey. I heart minimalism. 💕
    I think a list of good questions are very helpful to people getting started in decluttering. I like yours, “will I use this every week?”
    I had to get as clear as possible about why I wanted to live with fewer items to let them go. I think many people are stuck. They want minimalism but don’t want it *more than* keeping all their items. You have to arrive at wanting minimalism more to be able to let it go. I cheer everyone one here. Keep studying your intentions and your fears. You can overcome. You can be clutter free! ⭐️

    • @JanellKristina
      @JanellKristina  6 лет назад +3

      ForgiveAndLove09 I can relate to that, I've gotten to a point with minimalism I kind of feel a little stuck. If for some reason I had to live out of a suitcase tomorrow I basically know what I would need and not need, but I still have a lot more right now just because I don't have a reason to live out of a suitcase.

      Yes, we do gather easily but the good thing is you are aware of what you really need for peaceful living. As minimalist we continue to edit our possessions and I try to embrace the different phases of the journey. Thankfully they all have something to teach us. : )
      An editing question I use is: would I carry this in a 3month backpack trip. Peace ⭐️

    I got a great tip to think of before buying something: say you buy a game for $50. Are you going to play it through to completion 50 times? If not, it's not worth it. Or wait until it's on sale.

    • @stonescorpio
      @stonescorpio 6 лет назад +5

      As a gamer, I usually try not to buy a game unless I know I'll get an hour of gameplay for every dollar spent. I'm a fan of RPGs that can take 100+ hours to fully complete, so I generally get my money's worth, but I doubt I would play them through fifty times in a lifetime! XD

    I can relate: My whole family were hoarders, I feel guilty when I throw stuff out. I feel like a minimalist trapped in a hoarder's body. The many unfinished projects can also be related to ADHD: always full of ideas, never finish anything. I have several guitars, and other hobby items. Always used to put pressure on myself how I should finish one thing before the next, but if you allow yourself to enjoy them rather than turning them into a nagging task, they won't feel like clutter in quite the same way... You look very beautiful and minimalist too, by the way! Your short hair really brings out your face.

    true story for me: growing up in my mom’s house she was a huge hoarder. not like boxes everywhere but there wasn’t a bare piece of floor without a rug on it or a bare wall without something covering it. Junk everywhere; spilling out of drawers, etc. I used to get headaches everyday when I lived there. Moved out and no more headaches. I wouldn’t say I’m minimalist but I don’t own that many things. It’s crazy what it can do to your mind.

      But, in reality, it's your clutter that's actually inducing the anxiety, not the video - the video is just a reminder... I wonder if it might be necessary to face that anxiety in order to actually eliminate the root cause... 🤔

    A few weeks ago I felt like I couldn't breathe freely in my apartment so I started to declutter and got rid of 3 moving boxes full of stuff. Still trying to sell some furniture because I hate just throwing it away but unfortunately I haven't been successful yet. But as soon as that'll be gone I'll be happier. Even now after the decluttering I feel like I can breathe again.

    I read the book The Magic of Tidying Up and started getting rid of things that I never use. It's really hard though because I have a husband and two kids. My husband tends to hold onto things, he didn't have much growing up. Well the kids are kids and they want as many toys as possible. I"m trying to teach them that they don't need what they don't play with. I just don't know how to get my husband to understand. He's not even materialistic, he just has a bunch of stuff like art things that he hasn't used for 5+ years.

    I'm the opposite, I throw away too much stuff that I end up needing :( on the contrary, I ALWAYS declutter my clothes but somehow it never ends and I keep finding things that I wanna get rid of

    Omg junk room - you just sent me back in time when mother used my bedroom (which I was using) to store all junk in. I couldn't do anything there - there were piles of plastic bags everywhere. It was awful.

    Ugh i feel like i am constantly decluttering. And its not even my stuff. It took me 3 years to declutter the basement at my grandfathers house and now everyone has new projects. Everytime i try to throw things out theres more. I just dont understand how to get rid of it so i can clean my mind to pay attention to my own stuff. I dont know what to do besides just move out and come over to slowly declutter their things

    good vídeo I thought I was the only one who does this stuff about cleaning and disposing the inesesarie stuff,my freands and family members are olways complaining about my addiction of throwing stuff out or donate them.and I dislike buying inesesarie stuff. My kids call me I am basic 😂

    I am slowly getting rid of stuff. I started with purses last year. I would carry a purse for a month and at the end of the month if I hated carrying if it got donated. Usually the purse got donated. I also found out the type of purse I liked. I can not carry a tiny purse mostly because I just need reading glasses and they just dont fit in tiny purses. I am doing the same thing with my clothes, shoes etc.

    I need to get rid of soo much stuff omg. I have hella clothes and I always feel like I don’t have anything to wear. I barely have space so I keep my stuff on the floor. I need to get rid of old stuff and buy things I actually need like socks and undies instead of sweaters and dresses etc. little lotions too
