After numerous videos, finally found the tools needed for making the grove. Thx for the demonstration TOH!!!! We need some new vids from this channel. I need my TOH fix!!!!
What was the make & model of the router attachment that he used for making the corner Grove?
@@jeremybaumgart I suspect it is the system from Resource Conservation Technologies out of Baltimore. They used to ship and rent it for a week. May have to call them. I had one until it got stolen.
Not many people going to want to buy that tool but I think it would be easy to make a 45 degree attachment for a Rotozip or similar tool. Most people will just end up using a different type of weatherstripping.
Rotozips are too underpowered to cut the groove in wood unfortunately. That special tool he uses is insanely expensive. Stick on or screw on weatherstripping are the only real answers for retrofitting doors without the groove.
Great tip. Will Tommy loan that router out?
Where is a link to buy this tool? I searched the internet and it doesn't seem to be available.
How do you measure your gap in each jamb??
Easier to just buy the screw on the jamb weatherstripping. You just position it against the door instead of worrying about different sizes.
That's so groovy!
Is it not standard for a door to have weatherstripping? Is that really necessary to drill a notch or just use 3M double sided tape?
I heard the double sided tape has worse performance, but I don't know.
where can Tommy;s groove cutting machine be purchased
You can rent the machine at Conservation Resource Technologies out of Baltimore
Greg noway do you know if they will ship it?
May I ask why you removed the brass weather stripping in the beginning? I have the same thing on my front wooden door.
Tends to not be airtight/as tight as something that compresses
What is the weatherseal used in this video?, I cannot find it anywhere
Yeah, I just happen to have that tool on hand
Hi tom, i live in kashmir and i am not able to find this silicone weather stripping over here. Can you assist how will i get and how much it costs as i am. Thinking of doing it for all my doors and windows. We dont have sash windows we have the windows like the door opens
what do you do at the corners?
Start in the middle and push towards them for top and bottom or across the header.
I like Tommy's tool for cutting the groove but most homeowners don't have that. What then?
chisel
Terry i
Rent it or hire a guy.
Terry Get the kind that attaches to the jamb in the outside.
Jump out the winda.
What about the weatherstripping for the bottom of the door?
door sweep
@Masterg Samuraixmen these terrible doors you use all around the US are not efficient at all. These insulations are a joke
@@davidasdasd4666 What's a better system? Do you have a video to share?
Can the corner groove tool be purchased anywhere? I have looked and can't find it. Not interested in renting. I would rather purchase one.
JST106 Try conservationtechnology.com.
@JST106 Did you ever find one?
@@0wiseone no, I have never found one.
@@JST106 Bummer.. I'm looking for one now... lol
@@mikemiller9891 if you ever find one, please let me know! Seems we could find a unicorn faster than this silly tool!!
What if the latched door didn't compress the weather striping?
use a larger diameter strip for that section.
Buy a new / old house
Should have shown where to make the cut
What a shame, spring bronze weatherstripping was and should still be an artform. The most durable long lasting and efficient weatherstripping ever invented. Replacing it with plastic will only last at most five or six years before Dusty replaced again. Spring bronze weatherstripping good last 3040 to 50 years it properly maintained.
Durable and long lasting, yes. Most efficient, not at all.
can see sunlight through my bronze weatherstripping.
But it leaves gaps at the latch and the deadbolt. Not a complete solution, to that extent.
Slowly upholstering that hammer...
For 99%of people, this router and weatherstripping is never going to happen. Bad advice for the masses.
Maree-er.
Just use cell tape and don't start chiseling antique doors.
So you have to go get a new tool to install $10 of weatherstripping? Gimme a break. This is why I avoid This Old House recommendations.
Yet you took the time to watch the video and took even more time to comment on it. So much for avoiding, ha ha.
@@chrisstromberg6527😂😂😂
They are just showing ONE of the many ways you could do this task. You don’t have to do it this way.
U can rent tools dude
The homeowner doesn't exactly have the best bedside manner, does she?
She's staying out of the way and listening to what Tom has to say. What exactly was she suppose to?
