Your "drafty doors" video just populated into my RUclips, and so I clicked on it. Guess what? I bought those same foam wedges recognizing I needed them, and I do. But I got lazy and didn't install them. You've inspired me two ways. Number 1, I gotta learn how to kick myself in the butt, and number 2, I'm gonna install those weather seals today!! I bought mine online in a package of 12. THUMBS UP!!! (I'll let you kknow how my butt feels later). Hey video listeners, give this guy a THUMBS UP. It takes time for anyone to put a video together for us, the least we can do is THANK HIM for watching out for us, and making our family all the more comfortable. THANKS AGAIN Dr.Ray.
“I’ll let you know how my butt feels later…” LMFAOOOO 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this lit a fire up under my ass… thankfully! because it’s super effin cold right now…..everyone wants a hot booty so I consider myself blessed LOL 😂
Yep cold as balls right now where I live, and being a generally un-handy child of the 80s and 90s who grew up playing video games, I had no idea how weather stripping works. Now it's 2024 and I'm sick of my wife and kids complaining about being cold all the time, I decided it's time to fix that obviously drafty front door that is spewing freezing air into my house. This is the video that showed me exactly how to understand weather stripping and how to do it right. This video was crystal clear, very helpful, and fun to watch. Kudos to the video creator for putting in the effort and sharing this. Cheers.... here's to warm homes and properly-installed weather stripping!
Doing it right makes all of the difference. New door installation and I couldn't understand why so much air leaked from the outside. You explained everything perfectly and I thank you very much.
I'm a diehard "I'll do it tomorrow" cultist and here I am halfway into winter with a drafty door. Ughh. Thanks for sharing this. I already see how the dimwit door installer (not me) did a crappy job with trimming the door seals and omitted the lower corner seals as well. Your explanation for proper trimming the ends of the seals is invaluable.
Okay, I got the replacement seals in place, trimmed very good by following your technique, and even put in those bottom corner additions. It's airtight around the door or at least no noticeable draft as yesterday! Thanks again Ray!
Uggh. Spoke too soon as I get the wind changed direction. I actually believe cold air is leaking in under/past the threshold. I'll try to find some smoke sticks or incense tomorrow to confirm. These are row complexes, so I think they got the worse companies to put in the windows and doors because even the uPVC windows units are drafting.
If it's leaking under the threshold usually all you can do is caulk along the edges. To fix the windows is a little more involved; especially if they overtightened the mounting screws or installed them crooked.
Finally! It makes sense now. Your video is, hands down, the most comprehensive explanation for installation that I could find. ! The tip about cutting the corners and the weather stripping squares was brilliant. Thank you! !
I'm so glad this video was recommended to me this morning! My replacement weatherstripping arrives today and I would've cut it in all the wrong ways. Thank you!
Got my stripping and knew there was something for the corners but couldn't remember what they were called. I have watched many how to videos on replacing the weather stripping and by far yours is more detailed. You showed things I not even once saw in other videos (sept the corners wedges), but not installed the way you did which makes more sense. Thank you for your time in teaching us how to do things. Have a great day :)
These wedgies work really well. We are old and live in an apt with the patio door in the living room and not a good seal. When the north wind blows you can feel the draft. I knew I couldn’t do the weatherstripping but i could do the wedgies. Had to buy a bunch and spent around $80 on them at HD, but they did the trick. The reason we needed so many is because we aren’t very smart and put them in backwards and had to double up. But we did manage to seal off the draft. It sucks to get old.
There’s nothing wrong with getting old. This was a beautiful testament of your independence and says a lot about your life overall. Thanks for sharing.
I just watched about 8 of these videos and yours is miles above the others. Great detail and insight about what the seal does when you close the door and about getting tight fits. 10/10
Thanks for showing this. It will help me keep out drafts. Just an FYI: I am a deaf person relying on closed captioning. When you place the product information in the lower left corner, you block the closed captioning. Would it be possible to place the product info in an upper corner? Thanks, Very informative.
Thank you. The product and CC placement is controlled by YT. While watching the video you can click on the screen and tap the gear to change settings. Maybe there is a setting there to change where the captions appear.
OMG, I never knew the weather stripping slides into the trim!!!! I have terrible draft at the doors, and thought the stuff was worthless!Thank you so much!
This is true of more modern doorways, but there are older doorways that do not have the kerf cut into the door stops. With those, the kerf can be cut in perhaps, but it’s probably easier to replace the door stops with ones that have the weatherstripping already attached (with kerf already cut). Either way expect to do some paint touch up at minimum.
Since you have the weather-strip newly installed, why do you still need the square piece? Good video, but still don’t understand why it is needed. Also why didn’t you use four squares?
I used two squares, one on each side at the bottom. I guess because there isn't an overlap of weatherstripping in the bottom corners you need the extra thickness. If you shut off the lights inside and look carefully all around the door you'll almost always see daylight in the bottom corners. They usually come two in a package.
@@HouseDoctorRay Ah, I understand now! I bought the squares earlier this week and didn't know part of it was to be tucked into the weather-strip. Your video was very helpful! Thank you!!
Could the square almost act as a shim? I removed mine ,not knowing what it was, because I was painting and repairing the frame, and ever since my door is sticking near the lower half of the door. 🤔 do you think this could be the cause?
Usually when it's sticking near the bottom it's because the top hinge isn't tight enough. Get some 3" screws and replace two of the screws going into the door jamb. Make sure to predrill first.
If you click *...more* twice while watching the video it will open up to some product links. Lots of different styles, sizes, and colors available on Amazon.
Thank you , but I have a question on the little square pieces. I’ve noticed recently on my exterior doors exposed to the weather here up north that I’m getting wood rot right there. Any tips to prevent this. I have the little squares but they seem to be made of all black foam not white vinyl like you shown here. They came that way when they were installed new. This is on an exterior shop building that I wouldn’t want to put on storm doors but want to keep the moisture out. Somehow moisture is staying in the foam from snow and driving rain Great explanation and detailed on proper weather stripping .
You can scrape them off and replace with the ones that have a vinyl coating. Check your caulking all around the door frame. Also make sure your door has a drip cap at the top. Any rotted wood should be scraped and painted. If it's real bad, patch it with Bondo then paint.
Thanks for showing us the "real" way to install the weather-strip. The brand name just shows pictures, images or fake videos where they only displayed the product already done.
Yes, it's spray foam but the wrong type. The foam is used behind the molding or casing. It fills in the gap between the door jamb and the framing. You should only use foam labeled for windows and doors. It's usually white, the yellow stuff is for gaps and cracks and can easily bend a door jamb or window frame.
The door to my attic is warped at the top on the side with the door knob. It looks like I need thicker weatherstripping is there a way resolve. Currently I added some round foam under the weatherstripping but it is not thick enough to stop the draft. The door opens into the attic.
Try adjusting your strike plate first so the door latches in further. ruclips.net/video/UqZoizeCO8g/видео.html If that doesn't work you can try shimming or bending your hinges.
Should I be confused about how you installed those corner squares? If I'm installing or replacing all of the weather stripping, wouldn't I want to begin with the squares? Or were you demonstrating for people who are only adding the squares?
I appreciate the vid, but you didn't say anything about the size or kerf. I had to return 2 bc of sizing the seals are definitely not universal so its aggravating one was too small and the other, the door wouldn't shut.
The weather striping along the bottom of the door going outside is coming off. I don't think that is the same weather strip product as you used. It appears that it is attached to the door - not the plate. Do you have a suggestion or a video on that ?
I have so much cold air coming in it blew out a candle when I placed it near the door. I’m afraid purchasing weatherstripping is not good enough as they don’t make it thick enough for warped doors. What then?
First try bending the little tab inside the hole where the door latches to get it to close tighter. Then get a look all the way around to see if the door is warped too bad. If your door stop is removable you can take it off and reset it to match the warp in the door. However most door stop on exterior doors isn't removable. Your last option is to reset the jamb or replace the door. Both are a lot of work.
I second the suggestion to install the door stop to follow the warp in the door; door stops are thin enough that they will flex a bit to help with this situation. And if the door stop won’t flex enough, use a saw to cut it into pieces that will better follow the contour of the warp, and install the door stop in pieces. Sharp points on the edges should be trimmed a bit. Then use an oscillating saw to get the kerf at the seams to be able to accept the weatherstripping’s kerf insert - but only at seams where it’s necessary.
For some reason the weatherstripping never seals well at the bottom corners. The little squares help it stick out a little more so get a good seal at the bottom.
There are some other videos where they caulk the entire side seam from threshold, over the door seal and corner seal to the inside. Is it necessary to do that? About to redo my door seals because of the bugs coming in!
There shouldn't be any caulk on the weatherstripping. It should be free to move and flex. There should be caulk between the molding and the door frame if there are any gaps.
Jealous! I put weatherstripping on my apartment door that worked perfectly for six years. Until the manager made the maintenance man scrape it off for violating fire code. To block the strong breeze that gushes through, I stick on sheets of paper with magnets after I'm in for the night. It's pathetic.

You really should put it in afterwards because if you put it too far back the weatherstripping will be compressed in that spot.
