3" screws in the strike plate helps to keep the resident more safe when someone is kicking the door in. Split jamb looks like there's been forced entry at one time.
Ok. First of all Thank Youuu!!!! Your video is clear, precise and to the point and I appreciate that so much. You are the first person I've seen talk about the hinges to move the door to where it needs to be. And that is brilliant because as you know when you're taking the door off sometimes the hinges get bent. I'm layman and do my own home improvement stuff where I rent. I appreciate the details and your explanations and for not being arrogant or condescending. That's huge in my book and I will watch all of your videos. And I will share them. You're awesome keep up the awesome work. ❤
Fantastic video my friend. I watch tons of videos to send to people in need and maybe pick up a trick here or there. This one is going in my “help your neighbor” playlist.
Usually there is a lil tab on the inside of the lock catch you can bend to adjust where the door sits against the weather strip. Also love the bend the hinge knuckles tip
The bending of the hinge knuckles is professional. I first thought it was a bad hack, but it works well and the alternatives are not good, like removing the hinge and using shims which is a bad idea if you don’t know what’s out of plum. But you need to know which direction to bend the knuckles, and often you have to also bend the middle hinge knuckles to get a smooth closing. Also, check that the hinges are attached tight, so inspect that the screws are tight and the hinges are not loose or crooked.
Your video popped up in my feed just now and boy did I need your channel. I am having to do some light maintenance to my home and This is one of my issues. I am also having issues with my interior doors not being able to close 🙃
It’s a better idea to fill the old holes on the strike plate with some toothpicks and a little glue so you don’t slide the screws back in the same holes. You’ve also got an uneven margin line on the top of the door from handles side to hinge side. You need to do the same thing on the middle hinge and on the bottom hinge to bring that up to where the door doesn’t look like it’s hanging out of place . I am now a subscriber. Thank you, brother.
Awesome straight to the point tutorial, thanks maintenance man!! 🙏🙏 I had to laugh at myself when you said you've actually had to peel foam off some door frames and 👋 hi I am this door frame 😂 💯 so much foam but nothing works!! I'm trying your way right now so keep you posted!!
carry some golf tees to drive into the striker plate screw holes, then score with your knife then tap to break off. carry some 3 inch exterior deck screws to replace one top hinge screw to the jamb. the door weight loosens and sags the jamb. the new screw will reach to the framing and pull the jamb back ito place. bending hinges is a last resort method.
Love this easy fix. My question is in two parts; first, can you use this on the bottom hinge to close the gap on the bottom? Second part is once done with making adjustments do you also bend the other so you can put the pin back in? I have cousin in the Tucson area and my aunt and uncle used to live off grant. Both passed away a couple years ago. My uncle was heavily into the masons and shriners. He helped build the mall and high school.
Suggestion: use the scrap splinter wood material that you cut out with the razor blade to stuff inside the old hole. That will add some extra level of stability so that your new screw has no chance of breaking out because of the weakness to the left of it. It's worse if the new hole is really close to it versus how far yours is maybe but it really helps to reinforce that area laterally. Thank you for the tip on bending the hinges. I've never done that before or seen that and have quite a few that I could use that technique on
The screw holes for the strike plates are shot. The holes should be filled with wood splinters (toothpicks) and glue, and new holes drilled. The screws look like drywall screws which are coarse thread and not correct, but that’s all he has.
Thanks for the video. But the door opens out to the outside and there's a gap between the frame and the door. Weather stripping is good. Door is metal and new but installed about .70 of an inch away from the frame :( what can I do?
I thought you were only supposed to bend the hinges on the leaf screwed into the door NOT all of them and never the three attached to the leaf on the door jamb...
I paid a guy pretty good money to do exactly what you did in this video. Thought he was a genius, but you are the real deal. Thanks!
Been there, dine that. Almost exactly. Lol

2:00 using channel locks as a hammer…dude is 100% my spirit animal.
I’ve been fiddling around with this project for 2 hours, thanks man I appreciate it!
Thanks much for the great explanation, and appreciate the mention and usage of common tools.
Thanks

I like that hinge bend idea, gonna give that a try tomorrow on a door

The hinge trick is super cool. Thanks
Thanks man!!

Excellent video. Thank you for your knowledge and expertise
The timing of your voice over is AMAZING!
Using common tools is great as well.
Thanks!!
Thanks buddy I had a resident complaining about the weather strip gap and bees were getting in now I know what to do appreciate you
Thank you! Everytime it rains, I have a migration of pill bugs coming in at the corner of the door where I see light; this should help.

That's perfect!! Glad I could help!!
@@MaintenanceManNarratives you are very much appreciated sir 🤗
Wow! So simple. Thank you.
Haven't used this yet, but your vid has shown me this is the answer for 3 doors in my new home ✊🏾
Love the idea of using tools usually people have 🙏🏼
Why complicate things? What's available is usually good enough,
Thanks for commenting!!

Very good ideas. Thanks!
Thank you for your suggestion. I discovered that my door had an adjustable strike plate. I made a minor adjustment and now my door closes completely.
That's great!! I love it when a video helps someone!
Really helpful and explained in lay terms. Also using common tools helps as many of us don't have extensive tool kits 👍🏽👍🏽
Super solid video my friend, helped out a ton! Thanks
Great video, explaining super well
Thanks for making this video!!

Nicely done thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your always positive comments!! 🙏
Code in some areas of FL now requires doors to swing out. Because of this, I have a pinless hinge.
Ty so much !No more couch for me 😂
Super helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you.
Liked and shared! Thank you!
My hinges only have 2 knuckles on the door and the 3 knuckles is on the frame so could that be why the door bows and doesn't fit snug
Nice. Thanks

You're welcomed
this is also my problem at our apartment. what do you call that foam in your door? i want to try that first before anything else. thank you inadvance
Thanks, female, saved money!!

If you move the strike plate a quarter inch, how can you use the same screw holes again??
what about the gap on the hinge side? how do i make that side press aginst the whesthetstripping?
You’d need to do the same thing but with the hinges instead of the plate.
Good info
know what i’m doing
today 💅🤩
What do you do if the strike plate already has a lot of holes behind it and can't really be moved anymore?
Add some filler wood. Toothpicks with wood glue do well
@@JoeyMenendez thanks!

Why can you not do the same thing in reverse?
Nice

😮👍🏽
But you dinked the paint up when you hit it. Unless you planned on repainting anyways then it wouldn't matter.
You can literally buy white out and repaint it for 4$. Or get a $10 can of mini paint, it’s not that serious when you see the bigger picture!
