Old doors frequently suffer from air leaks, gaps, and drafts. This short video from the honest carpenter will show you how to install metal/vinyl weatherstrip / weatherstripping to cut down on drafts and air leaks, and keep pests out!
(Newer doors use a different kind of weatherstrip that slots into a dado or kerf in the stop trim of the door. That kind of weatherstripping is easily replaced by slotting in new weatherstrip. I've linked some above if you have a newer door assembly with this issue.)
Tools:
Hacksaw
Drill
Utility Knife
Tape Measure
HOW TO ADD/INSTALL WEATHERSTRIPPING TO OLD DOORS:
1) Measure area between stop trim along top of door.
2) Layout this measurement on weatherstripping
3) Cut weatherstrip with utility knife and hacksaw
4) Install weatherstrip using a drill and supplied screws.
5) Measure for side pieces of weatherstripping pulling from bottom of door up to installed top piece of weatherstrip.
6) Cut and install side pieces of weatherstrip
Pieces should contact door in order to ensure weather seal. However, be sure not to push against the door too hard during installation. It can be helpful to install top screw, then middle and lower screw. Then, make sure that the door shuts well--if it does, fill in with remaining screws.

As a locksmith, I can honestly say I’ve done countless service calls to fix locks that were damaged by improperly installed weather stripping. The most important thing you can do before you install the first screw is, shut the door so it latches and........... LOCK THE DEADBOLT!!!!!! (If there is one)
Then, go ahead and *gently* push the stripping up against the door, Mark with a pencil and install your screws. It’s important to lock the deadbolt because quite often the strike plates for the deadbolt and the knob/lever latch, aren’t aligned properly. It not properly installed, the deadbolts bolt will drag across the strike plate with too much resistance and eventually break. I’ve have seen this problem countless times, weather stripping causes lock and door closing/fit issues almost by default.
Good advice!
@@TheHonestCarpenter - cheers, I saw the vid thought I should throw in a comment.
@@TheHonestCarpenter great job!! which one is the product your using? I don't see it in your links...
@The Honest Carpenter
When I mark the screw holes to install the metal weatherstripping , should I shut and latch the door with/without the kerf strips (that has been inserted into the groove on the top and latch side edge?
The kerf strips don't properly seal the old door but the door does shut latch easily. In other words do I remove all old weatherstripping first?
I put mine on, am very inexperienced with this. My deadbolt feels tighter even if I loosen all the screws on that side. When I tightened them it was even worse. I'm not sure if I should redo the entire thing or if a little tightness in the deadbolt is okay.
Thank you so very much for your instructions! I’m a 65 yr old woman who does most of my own easy repair work and with this video I CAN do this!
Update: I DID do it! It was WAY easy! I actually used a heavy pair of tin snips to cut it after marking it. It cut the air flow very well! I’m sooo happy!
I am 62 and redoing my 1940 house. My front door is messed up. It needs bondo in places, screws are falling out. I definitely am getting this product. I am rebuilding this place mostly myself. Doing breaker box now.
Awesome. I am 65 and doing all kinds of little projects on my own.
Thanks for writing this! I'm 65 too and do my own repairs. I first tried the foam strips and ended up wadding the mess into a ball and drop kicking it into the street. I'm definitely going to try this method. I just bought an older house and yep the doors are pretty breezy!
@@littledebby365 LOL, me too. This looks like it would also work in the 1880's home we live in.
lol me too a woman 63 and doing my own maintenance , needed this badly. Much appreciated thank you so much. Love and light to you and yours. G Ma
Finally! Clear and concise. Don’t drone on at beginning and even SHOW as talking. THANK YOU! NICELY DONE.
No joke, very clear! I’ve been so confused as to how to do this weather stripping on this drafty old front door. Since I’m renting, I’d like a simple solution that could be removed if necessary.
Minnesota winters are nothing to mess with.

@@xmrsuperx Me Too!! Well I will be 65 in May. My husband was a contractor for many years, and I guess he taught me stuff so when we got to this poin in life I would be able to do these type of things and he could golf !! Smart man!
@@judkilgore3822 I’m not trying lol 😝 I’m not going anywhere I’m going home 🏠 I’m q
Agreed. He gets right to it, no fan fair or flim flam.... just, "let's get to work."
OMG have been redoing my weatherstrip on our old farmhouse every fall. Never got a good seal. This is working GREAT. I installed myself, and I am a 67 year old women. Highly recommended
Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for... Between this video and the video about fixing the small corner light gap at the bottom of the door - you just gave me the fixes I needed! I really appreciate it!
Dude, great video. No B.S. talking, straight to the point, showed and explained so well that I don't think it can be done better. Much appreciate videos like this. Subbed.
Have used this option many of times. Most important tip for beginners was like you said mount with screws in the middle for possible needed adjustments later.
Your videos are excellent! You explain things so clearly. Thank you! I'm 71 and love watching and following your instructions!
Thanks! I'm always encouraged to try DIY stuff when the instructions are clear and easy to understand. Yours always are!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, easy to understand and follow, video tutorial on the proper installation of the metal door weather stripping.
Thx for getting to the point and for details about measuring, marking, cutting, use of a clamp. Great for 65+ handywoman who knows a little about tools, but never done any home repairs
Thank you! I’m doing this first thing in the morning and was panic-researching to make sure I wasn’t forgetting anything. This put my mind at ease.
…and with my (admittedly limited) experience I feel a little dumb for not putting together that the “extra-large” screw holes were intentional for ensuring the right fit. Thank you for pointing that out specifically 😅
I'm definitely going to try this out! I bought an old house in the summer, and none of the adhesive stick-on weather stripping I've tried so far has done much of anything. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much! This video was a huge help to me. I own an old house (built in 1908) and get a great deal of wind off the St. Lawrence River--especially in the winter. I just finished installing the weather stripping and can't wait until the next windy day so that I can feel the difference. I really appreciated the product links that you provided. That made the entire project so much easier.
Absolutely amazing! I just bought a 1915 house all redone on inside EXCEPT front door, moved in and noticed the huge gaps, and it is an OLD door with those bevel type windows and this showed me what to do as I could see regular weatherstripping will not cut it. I thank you so much and feel confident to do this (but will need the hack saw!)
New subie. I hate waiting for my husband to do anything. These short videos for me, are EXCELLENT !!! And my house was built in 1923. Thank you.
Our house is little over 150 years old, So I really appreciate any content addressing old(er) construction.
I commented on this earlier, but I have to add another. It's been close to zero here in Buffalo, and our unheated side entrance has been brutally cold. In the past I managed to seal most of the cracks with adhesive backed foam stripping, but there was always a draft. We couldn't keep liquids there because we were afraid they would freeze. I installed this kind of insulating strip and a new door sweep yesterday. It's amazing (kind of like when I discovered heat tape for my pipes). There is no draft, and the entryway is comfortable. I guess I'm teachable. Thank you again. I've subscribed, and I look forward to finding new solutions to old problems.
Excellent! I’m getting ready to do this to my front door and now I’m returning the foam stick on stuff. Thanks man, love your videos!
Don't change a thing (!) I've learned so much from your vids & so far your site has met my every project need. It's my go-to resource for reliable, dependable info; great demonstrations.
This is a very helpful video. My front door is an old wooden double-door. I can see light through the cracks, so I know the weather stripping needs to be done. I had that peel/stick foam, but that doesn't really work well. I will eventually replace the doors, but until then, this will help!
THANK YOU SO MUCH....I'm trying to weather strip an old door that's not level/plum anymore. Great, helpful video! Much appreciated!
Thank you for the great instructions. I've got a steel entry door that needs to be replaced but I just couldn't afford it this year. Winter's coming and I don't want my heating bill to be any higher than it has to be. I added the bronze one to my cart. Looking forward to fixing the draft and light leak.
Centering the slotted holes. Two cuts Good reminder!! Thank you
I used a similar product on my old doors and it worked very well.
Our house was built in 1863. We just hung a new door and while the door is level, the house is not lol. we have major gapping. Definitely doing this to fix the drafts! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video! Just fixed the weatherstripping on my back door and now it works great! Couldn't have done it without your instruction!
Thank you! This was a very helpful video! I live alone now and my sons have grown up. So now it is up to me to do these projects!
Thanks you very much for your help. Your video was perfect, to the point, no repetition, and no boring introduction. You answered the question that I had Googled. My only problem now is that the top of the door jam is metal, not wood, and I'll have to have the right drill bits.
Just finished weather stripping 3 doors - your tips & tricks were invaluable - Thanks!
This helps alot, I sincerely appreciate your advice.
Thank you. That was a big help. I've been trying to figure out a better way to seal my old doors. The stick on seals never last or works good. This stuff works great thanks again.
binge- watching your videos now .
so easy to follow, and well paced.
¡¡you are helping so many people!! God bless you back!
Old house and the front door is like this! After 4 years I think you've given me hope!!
(paused @1:00)
Oh, my word! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I can't wait to see how you're going to install this weather stripping Mr. James! I have a feeling this is going to help with my door drafts greatly! Okay! Back to the video!
Really enjoy the tips for the door, my door needs weather stripping. I have used the peel and stick and never stays .I am a 60 year old woman and I am on oxygen, with severe back problems. I am hoping I can find it at Home Depot. I love this kind of stuff, you are going to have to keep posting. Thank you for the how to video.
Thank you! My house was built in 1949 on a regular foundation that one previous owner decided to hand dig a basement. Well, no door fits the exterior doorway so several years ago, a friend who had an extra steel door w/foam interior, cut that door to sort of fit the space, then wrapped the open end with steel that he cut off. Well, it's ugly but it worked better than the hollow-core wooden one that was there before and had a huge hole at the bottom that all kinds of wildlife loved. Anyway, that big basement is my dog's house during the day and it's conditioned but there's a huge gap around the door jamb that just needs a good weather-stripping fix. This is just the ticket!!! I don't have a hack saw. Guess I'm gettin one.
I watch a lot of you tube video's. Im a retired US Army Veteran 66. Out of all of them I think your the most genuine likeable guys making these types of videos. Theres a real shortage of men like you.
I hope your channel enjoys huge success, you deserve it.
Hey, thanks Kevin! I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel 🙂
Thanks so much! I like the attention to detail with the tip of notching the foam in the corners for a good fit!
Thank you for this! We live in a very old house, and in the winter when it's windy, you can hear the wind whistling in around the door! I can do this!! And I need the tip for under the door, too!!
I'm a pretty decent mechanic when it comes to cars, lawnmowers, bicycles, washing machines, etc. but when it comes to carpentry I'm the kind of guy who measures 4 times then cuts in the wrong place. This was no big deal when I rented an apartment but when I bought my first house at age 68 the deal got much bigger, much faster! Happily I ran across this wonderful site on RUclips and now whenever I have a home fixit problem this is my first, and almost always, only stop! Can't say how much you've helped me so I'll just say Thanks! Great site with clear, detailed, easy to follow instructions PLUS a list of places where you can buy the materials! Everything the Home Depot "How To" site should be but isn't!
I enjoy learning how to weather proof and close up the gaps. Very to the point and clear simple directions.
Thank you for this video! I just moved to an old cabin which needs a lot of work, one of which is sealing the old windows and doors for the winter. I have no experience doing any home improvements or repairs, but I need to learn as I can't afford to hire anybody. This will be a great first project. I'll be looking at your other videos, too 👍🤞
You are the best!! I just bought what you recommended from Lowe’s and now I’m about to install it! Thank you for your knowledge.
Used this video twice and it's concise, accurate, and understandable. Four stars.
Thank you! I had no idea where to start and didn't realize there was that slot in newer doorjambs, and couldn't figure out how to attach the weatherstripping I bought. Going back to Menards for a different product! Thank you!
A BIG thank you to you! That was derailed but concise. Easy to follow. Never had this suggested once when inquiring from 'experts' at the big box stores, and a local hardware.
"derailed" - me thinks you mean "detailed". BIG difference LOL
This is awesome. Thank you so much. Our 1957 home shifted in Southern Calif. and the door installer said he could do nothing to improve huge crack from the door to the side on bottom corner. This should help at the very least a little.
thanks, man!! i was trying to use the foam stuff, and while it *was* fixing the light issue, it was also pushing on the door way too much. maddening. i can see this working MUCH better for my use.
I love this guy he just tells the truth and easy fix. Keep Sharing ur amazing information
I’m about to replace my old weather stripping and your videos will make it much easier. Thanks
We have the most convoluted door sizes in our home and as a result have struggled with what on earth to do for sealing them. Thank you so much for this concise and easy to follow tutorial!
Just did mine on my old door. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks so much for this! I've been fighting with my old house and front door. This will help a bunch!
Thanks Ethan, I've watched this video 10 times over three years and finally did the job today. I had all the ingredients, including FOUR of the dullest hacksaws known to man. Got the job done and will go tomorrow to buy four shiny new blades and a couple of spares. Makes a nice difference in the airtightness of my 70-year old door. I always appreciate your DIY videos on how to weatherize and improve the comfort of your home! Happy New Year!
That’s great to hear, CLT! I’m glad it helped, and happy new year! 😄
Great video. Explains it well as far as I can tell. I am a woman with no carpentry experience.
Thank you so much for this. I didn't know what the product was for or how it worked. My friend installed a prehung door on a 100+ yr old house and it didn't go well. He couldn't get the frame to line up right and ended up with some significant gaps on his door. My brother also broke the threshold while trying to help get the door to shut properly. Friend had never installed an exterior door before. Anyway, there are gaps and it needs to be sealed better. I sent him this video so hopefully he can try this solution.
Thank you for the info, just moved to an older home and didn't know what I was going to do. My back door is my problem
Thanks for the links and demo. My door has too much gap and the latch doesn't hold it tight against traditional foam strips, even the wide v-strips. this is a great solution for me b/c we can seal from the outside and ensure it's snug all around even if the gaps a wide in one place and narrow in another, and it doesn't jam up the door from having too much foam in the tighter places.
Special thanks for the links. I couldn't find anything online b/c everyone is using foam between the door and frame.
thanks, man. your videos have been helpful as i put my new house together this year, but this one in particular saved me when winter chills happened quickly up in the hills.
So helpful! Especially appreciate how quickly you explain and show things.
Thank you for sharing the atypical, which now applies to older doors, this is what I was looking for. I have the metal brass trim around my door, and didn't want to remove it, but with your method I can add to what I have. Your are a great American Honest Carpenter!!
Thank you, Papaw! I see a lot of the old brass clasp weather stripping around here too 🙂
Thank you so much for making this video. This is the perfect solution for the old late 70's door on my new house.
Thank you! I can’t wait to tackle this. We bought an 80 year old house and it’s breezy this winter
I've installed 100's of exterior doors, slabs and prehungs, for old doors or jambs these are the best weather stripping for sure.
Wow this is a game changer on my new house. Thank you!
This is also a really good pest control measure! Thanks for the vid
Clea, sweet & simple...instructions...no fluff.
Thank you for this information. I was able to get this up before the freeze. Very grateful!!!!!
I was about to replace my door that I spent so much time to update with stained glass. I’m going to try this!
UPDATE: it worked!! 🙌🏼 saved my beautiful door and lots of money. Thank you!
I have never heard of it but I am glad you did a tutorial on it. THis is something I can certainly use. Thanks for sharing this useful product information
You're welcome, John! Thanks for watching :)
Super helpful. The maintenance man installed it into the door itself 😂. With your help I was able to take it off and install it the right way.
The cushioned foam I’ve always liked. A quick blade width rabbit cut along the flat edge of 1,1/2” wide by 3/8” door stop will provide what you need to install it. I as well start at the top with door closed and the wood and weather strip cut to length then carefully bring up against the door with the appropriate compression and secure it. Then the hinge side etc. It will provide a seal as good as any new door that uses this seal. They are available at most hardware stores. After the initial instillation the seal can be replaced the same as any new door utilizing this type seal. Use a mitre joint in the top corners to allow the seals to go right to the corner.
Best idea I have ever seen in my 60 years and I believe that would also work on some drafty windows thank you so much For sharing
Excellent video. He covered everything precise. It was step by step. I have a storm door that opens slightly at top, door handle side and let's a lot of air in. Will try this out. TY
My door is older and developing gaps as the weather stripping wears and flattens and cracks. This is the perfect solution.
Thanks! Great video! Just bought two of these for a drafty, 1906 Victorian. Great pointers.
Love this!!! This was explained so simply that it makes it seem so easy to do…great job!!!!!!!
Used The same method 10 years ago and it worked great, Going to do it again so non as it gets warmer
Great videos, thanks for showing different products for old doors. You hit this one on the money on this old door.
Hi, after watching your video I bought a similar MD brand trim kit at home depot for my 1968 door. The door had gaps around the handle and sides, after using this kit the gaps around the sides are gone. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about easy products to solve common problems.
Awesome! I’m glad it helped, Stephanie 😄
Here because of the light gap at the bottom! Heading there now...thank you so much!
Excellent Video!! Perfect timing as this is an issue we are currently having with our doors!! Thank You 😊
Great video! This will definitely solve my draft issues around my main entrance and basement doors. My basement door has a small enough gap that spiders use it as a highway into the house.
my place, downstairs, i've dubbed "the spider palace". gads of spiders, upkeep on webs is insane. now i have a little hope that with the doors properly sealed, that'll shut down that issue quite a bit.
Thank you so much for your video. You did an awesome job explaining how to measure, cut, saw and install with ease.
Perfect timing - thank you for such clear instructions and info!
Thank you this was very helpful. I live in a mobile home and I have gaps big time
I love these weather strip! Really good stuff! I've used these with, the weather stripping already on the door as well! Good video man!!
I knew I was in the right place when I seen the door you're working on.
You are a very good teacher! Thank you for a great video!😊
Just found this video. Thanks for the helpful tip and linking the product. I am having an issue with an exterior door and am hoping this really helps and improves things. Thanks very much.
I used that weather strip on a garage door that didn't have a tight fix and it worked perfectly.
You are such a genius! And you explain what to do so well. Wow! I wish you were in my neighborhood! I'd keep you busy. Thank you & stay safe. This method is so professional looking.
Thank you, Andrea! 😄
Outstanding! Fast, clear, and no stupid electric guitar music playing over a long intro. You're wonderful. :o)
great! my doors are 1981 and have weatherstripping but this is even better!!! thank you
Thank you for the instructions.
I’m going to try this for sure
Thank you.
Was going to use the foam stripping, but you talked me out of it. Great video!
Yours is the channel I have been searching for. I am learning so much. Thanks So Much. I have a drafty door that I will now attempt to fix with the help of your video.
Thanks, Alex! Good luck 🙂
