Good video! A lot of times people will replace those screw on the door jamb with longer screws for protection. Those longer screws make it much harder for someone to kick your door in.

I noticed that now on the hinge side of the door the gap is much wider than the locking door side. What do you need to do to make both sides equal?

  • @Yoinx

You should always have at least 1 3+" screw per hinge for security. This makes sense that it anchors to a stud rather than just the door frame. Same with the deadbolt/lock strike plates.
Not sure why that was so surprising as you took it out.

    * not a usual crescent wrench, its one made just for door hinges.... called a knuckle wrench.

I have a gap on the opposite side of the hinge, and am curious if those shims will work. I am afraid if I use them, there will then be a gap on the hinge side for air to come through. Any ideas?

It's hard to say. There is supposed to be a gap around the door.the seal is actually created when the door presses against the outside molding. If the door edges is covered by that outside moulding (when looking from the outside with the door closed) This isn't the fix for you. If it is your problem remember you are trying to make both gaps even.

If you use the shim, do you actually need to bend the hinges?

  • @JuliaNeubauer

Nice job. When you move/spread the bottom door-knuckles to the left, 'width' --equal to the spread-- is added to the bottom of the door. This serves to close the space/gap between the edge of door and door jamb. Does the shim serve to push the door, to further close the gap?

Yes in combination the knuckle bender helped but I feel like the shim help closed the gap the most.

@@Self-taught_Therapy if you had to do it over, would you skip the knuckle bender and just do the shim? Thanks for the help!

When it starts raining I guarantee he will be back unscrewing the door to remove them shims from between the door because of swelling from the rain he might not even be able to open the door at all when it happens

Does this work for gap that is forward -back, not side-side?

    • @Self-taught_Therapy
      @Self-taught_Therapy  Год назад +2

Great question! From what I know this only works with side to side alignments.
But the following may help fix your problem:
-Try tightening all the hinge screws
-Make sure the hinge pins are completely in the hinge
-If that doesn't work, try replacing the hinge screws with 1 inch or longer screws.
Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions!

does this work on bigger gaps

  • @Tarzanmann

This seems like a bad idea. Instead of adjusting the door opening (which is too large), you just move the gap from one side of the door to the other.
