I went immediately to my exterior doors to see if they had the adjustable cap, and they don't. I have used door sweeps for our eighty year old house, but I would have been floored if all that I had to do is adjust it. The painters tape trick itself would have made so many jobs easier. If I'm the only one who didn't know this stuff, then I must be living under a rock😂! Thanks for always having very helpful content for losers like me!

Excellent video! Very thorough with good craftsmanship. I was taught about doors from an expert in the 1960s. Working in a manufacturing building where many fire rated doors were improperly installed on concrete block walls. The door rep spent several days working on the doors while training me how to adjust doors. I would suggest that a proper alignment of the door should be done prior to reworking the threshold area. Poor alignment is a major cause of gasket deterioration.
During my years as a contractor, I supervised or even installed hundreds of doors and even adjusted an 8’x3’6” door this week. The dragging door damaged the weather strip and made it difficult to open, close and lock. I am disappointed that nearly ever door in my new house had to be adjusted! I would recommend that every installer study this video.

Thank you! All the doors in my house were installed way too close to the floor to clear my rugs and with non-adjustable thresholds. Cutting down the doors and making my own taller caps is a great idea. No one does videos about what to do if doors are too low for rugs, don’t people need rugs inside their doors?? Perhaps you can make a video about this next?

These are great tips, and your custom one look both easy and good. My door has the bubble gasket that you talked about at 1:14 despite being residential. In my case, the "normal" size one was too small and the "large" one was too big. So I got the large one and then used about a dozen screws to squish it down to the correct height.

Nice helpful video as I've been wrestling with a gap issue on my front door after trimming it to clear a new entrance mat. The only thing I would comment on, is if for some reason the door itself isn't square, (on older houses it may have been trimmed to fit a door frame that's moved), transferring a top edge measurement to the bottom edge width may not be correct.

Thanks for the video and your time making them! I have tried the single flap thing - just purchased a full slide-on to replace it. Can't wait for how to replace the whole threshold! Can the custom one be adjusted also (seasonally)? Every spring my door scrapes horridly (wet) - can't hardly open it; every summer (dry) there is a crack large enough on that end to let small mammals in - I keep adjusting the flap thing - no adjustable part.
Also, I have an old house facing west. The thick laminate on the front door is pealing on the bottom 9-10" - I am considering getting flashing to make a toe-kick - I could buy a toe-kick but they all are 2" short and if I do 'bondo' type repairs, it will need to be covered edge-to-edge. Think it will work?

Thanks for watching! I see what you're saying about the toe kick being too small. Flashing maaay work...but it might be a bit too soft. It'll get banged up pretty easily. That's a tricky one. I'd maybe scour the internet for the largest toe-kick you can find, then seal the places around it really hard with something like spar urethane!

Good video! Please address gaps along the sides too. I can easily see light along the side of both my front door and rear door.

I will, NW! Those often have to do with hinges, and jamb squareness. :)

Great video. I suspect I'm going to be dealing with this in a few years.
I've got a newer house and it's settling and throwing things off - particularly the doorknob latch catching on the plate in the door frame. When the weather changes it won't catch right unless you apply considerable pressure upwards or downward, essentially moving it into place. Would you recommend me moving the plate up or down so the swelling isn't enough to completely misalign the catch? TBH I'm surprised it's doing this. I'd think this is maybe the most important part of the installation.

I have this problem on my front door, and I just routed out the plate with a dremel and made the hole bigger. Moving it is kind of a pain, and in my case it would just need to be moved back when drought conditions change.
