Tools List for Prehanging a Salvaged Door:
Four Foot Level
Tape Measure
Miter saw
Drill/driver
Pneumatic nailer
Countersink drill bit
Clamps
Pencil
Shopping List:
3” Screws
8d Finish nails
Wood shims
Steps:
1. Use a four-foot level to check if the existing floor is level. Make the bubble level and then measure the distance from the floor to the underside of the level. This will determine the long side of the jamb.
2. Measure the height to the jamb header of any existing doors to ensure the new door matches.
3. Use a miter saw to cut the jambs to length.
4. Use a countersinking drill bit to predrill holes in the jamb pieces. Connect the jamb using 3” screws.
5. Mark _” reveal for the casing on the jamb with a pencil.
6. Set the side casing on the line on the jamb and then attach with 8d finish nails.
7. Allow the head casing to overhand the side casing by _” on each side and attach.
8. Attach a temporary filler strip across the bottom of the jamb to hold it square when moved.
9. Test fit the jamb assembly in the opening.
10. Add wood shims to the door framing to make one side of the jamb plumb.
11. Clamp the jamb flush with the drywall or plaster, then screw the jamb through the shims into the framing.
12. Add shims to the other side of the jamb and attach in the same manner.
13. Bring the door in and test it.
14. Add shims behind the locket.
15. Cut the shims flush with the jamb.
16. Add casing to the other side of the door jamb.

I generally don't like remodels, but by reusing the door and trim, he is honoring the history of the old house. That seems like the way to go.
Tommy making it look easy again.
Tommy, make houses great again
I love this old house! Tom Silva is my idol👍
6.42 SOUNDS LIKE TOM HAS GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tommy Silva's DNA should be produced and administered to each child at birth. He's a living legend!
You got the right spirit.. but I'm not sure you have the right cause-effect regarding DNA and childbirth.
Everyone would have a mustache then.....
@@ymyinfinity fukkin lols on this comment hahaha
I wouldn't mind seeing Tommy build a whole house
Rawl Sawh Thatd legit be amazing.
I wouldn't mind hiring Tommy to build me a house. I know it would be one of those houses that's still there 250 years later.
Same here i would pay for the videos.
One door a day.... and it's finished by 2089
Building a new house is easier than remodeling an old one. He's done many full house restorations over the years.
Tommy is a magician with those shims--I always have to fuss with them. Great job; nice idea to salvage and reuse that original door.
The man’s probably got over 30 years experience, he’s a wealth of knowledge at this point
I think Tommy got lucky. I've hung old doors, as well as new, for over 45 years, and old doors are seldom square. If you don't square them up before you set the jamb, the door likely will not fit well; It will be an out-of-square door in a square frame. The top may run out, the bottom may not be parallel with the floor or the leading edge with the lock-side jamb. By the same token, if you set the jamb flush with surface of the wall, and hang a warped door . . . well, do the math.
Bob Pease what goes into squaring them up? Would it be planing?
Yeah that is a reality that often arises. I think it's a matter of judgement as to whether a door can be re-used. Some are too whacked to use .
Stfu and watch the vid.
Stfu
@@hijackn2890 Cut the out of whack side back to square if you can spare the space.
This guy takes pride in his work and always does it right.
this guy is a real champion when it comes to perfection, marvelous guy
"...and to do that, I'm gonna pull it out with a clamp..." *takes clamp out of the pocket* haha
@Devin Anson sure, you have two accounts and make one comment after the other to reassure it... You're a spammer
Hi Mr. Silva, I've learned a lot by watching your show. Thank you. One thing bothers me, though. I noticed all the Carpenters use shims to fit the gaps. Maybe you could put a word into Home Depot to make thin strips of wood about 6', and various thin measurements that could be tacked to the gap.? Just an idea....😊
He made that look easy. And he didn’t show all the usual problems you have when fitting a door lining (the frame as we call it here in the Uk)
Fitting doors is VERY different. I’ve fitted loads and each one is different
The difference between a well fitted door and something that looks wrong and doesn’t work well is tiny.
Building the jam & casing & Hanging my refinished Antique doors takes me the better part of a day. Wish I had Tommy (or any decent seasoned builder) to come over & help out. However I live rural, where all decent builders are booked 1+ yrs out- so struggle, learn, create, & build all by me myself and I.
Tom is the real deal ! That’s what you call a GC
I’m literally doing this soon!! I have these amazing easy lake doors that weight over 100 lbs each!! I need to make my own casings.. thanks for the video!!! 👍👍👍
Watch more door videos. I feel they didnt put some of the steps they did in this video for it to be a perfect fit first try.
That's what ya call REAL trim, not the junk nowadays.
Really enjoy Tom doing projects. Makes it look so easy.
Me Too.
he rly do
woiks loik a chahm
Whenever Tom does work, it’s always plum and straight. Are there any mess ups? Like maybe redoing something over and over? Sometimes I feel so dang incompetent 😆, but I would love to see it. I mean we are all human, maybe not Tommy though, he might be a machine 🤔
That was really impressive. If I was the one doing it it would be all crooked and upside down.
Not only a great master carpenter but a great teacher. 😊
Boy, the Boston accent always makes me laugh! "Works like a chahm"
Let's do some work in the "gaahden"
I left the tools in the "caah"
xD
AH! it was a Boston accent, love it
Nice touch putting those jamb screws in the niche (rabbet) of the jamb so they are invisible
I had a dream of Tom Silva last night... he was teaching me how to use a string line and yelling at me and throwing his tools at me. What a mean man.
Mr Silva you are the number one....
That’s a really nice looking door guys, great job 👍
Or you can plumb and fit the hanging side leg, ensuring the head is level, hang the door then pack the clapping leg over until the correct penny gap is achieved then fix the leg. Then fit the plinth blocks and architrave to the casing
As if any mere mortal could do this... Tommy is a superhero carpenter
Good tip and demo
Fantastic Tommy you are wicked smart
Nail shims first, over half inch drop across door and it fits perfect on first try! Wow, for real?
I know, right? That dude really trusts his level!!
It's TV.
LYDIA DID DO A GREAT JOB... AND YES THESE VIDEOS ARE GREAT... MORE!!!!!!
He’s Really Good 👌🏼👌🏼
Cool • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Good video. However, I would have checked the old door for square and flat before going through all the trouble of jambing it.
Works like a chaahm!!
Is it really easier to attach the casing to one side of the door first, before installing it? I have never done that.
Never seen it done like that before but it makes sense for having a backing to brace it
Wow...that's a sweet installation
The Chevy commercial RUclips guy is on this old house? Awesome
nice dwoh; great dwoh
Helps me with my cabin renovation
Go Tommy!
WORKSHOP LOOKS LIKE IT'S READY TO FALL OVER .....HILARIOUS.
Great as usual. Merry Christmas TOH
Tommy makes it look easy!!!
He left out a lot... How did you keep the jam square? What if the wall studs are not plumb? What if the header is not level? What if the door jam is narrower than the finished wall?
Shim and trim (shim casing, trim door)
My arms crossed shows just how macho of a man I am. 😂😂😂
This clip didn't address how Tom handled the threshold and the uneven floor. Is there a full version where he discussed this?
It did. He measured the difference cut the door jam to length
The jam heights could have been the same even if the floor level was off, headers sag down too.
Casually leaves his Festool chop saw and impact driver outside, I'm sure it's a nice neighbourhood.
There are dope addicts in all neighborhoods. But yeah one must be careful as people do desperate things in times of desperation.
Masterful Tommy.
Keep up the great hard work!
What they didn't show us is that the door had to be hung on the jams PRIOR to nailing off to check how/if the door needed to be altered...blindly hanging door jams plumb and level in a really old house with really old doors is never plumb or level!!!!
Exactly. There is no way this method (that I know of) could have worked as the way they demonstrated.
I agree completely, Bee
Notice how they didn't show how the reveals looked when he shut the door. Tommy just says look at that!
Just gotta fill in the nail holes with the right coloured putty.
Works like a chammm! 😂
You sir are welcome at my house anytime. Merry Christmas
I want to be Tommy Silva when I grow up.
Frank sounds like Mahk from ZebraCorner.
How do you know how thick the shims are supposed to be when you are nailing them on ahead of time?
You stack them until the side is level. Or I guess since it's up and down it would be called "plumb".
Yeah I was wondering that too, they seem to leave out many processes for the sake of time, but you would definitely have to hang everything and test it before nailing it
So what happens to the bottom of the door? Will there be an uneven gap since it's not level to the door? If so, how does one fix that?
While I did learn some things and liked the video I do feel some key details in the process were left out. Your concern being one of them
If the floor isn’t level, you either have a gap on the bottom, or at the top. You can’t have something flush to a non-level surface and also have it swing across it.
Matt Snyder will adding a door threshold and scribing it work?
you can trim the bottom of the door or add a piece to the bottom
What about buying antique frwnch doors to install in opening (btw living& dinning room) where no door has ever been. House built 1912
As always...
job done nice and easy
Your profile picture is like the one i had in my old PC back in 2009 thats crazy!
Gosh I wish I could pick his brain for a week. So much I didn't learn when I was younger.
Looks awesome
Very small room for a half bath with the door opening inwards..where do you put the toilet ?
I was wondering that too, I mean I think that counter in there isn't part of the half-bath... but oh god if it is... even if you remove that though, I am having a hard time seeing how you're going to shoe horn a toilet and a sink in there, and before people say "no need for a sink" let me just say "ewww you're gross"
Needed this. Thanks!
I would of use the small piece of trim for the inside of the bathroom
Works like a chum!
How much does the show charge people to come show them how to fix things?
Nice job.
it's called a R Massachusetts... use it
Yeah did a little work back here, what’s it to ya?
"A Qouta ofa-Inch"
Works like a chahm.
Next.. please do something on cutting a door a little smaller.. 😀👍
Thats a loaded issue. With cutting down a door so goes the stile and rail dimensions and the look of the door.. always something!
I have to repair or install new door jams on a door, how would I do this?
Buy matching jamb stock or replicate what is there. Remove old jamb, install new plumb, level, and square, or at least so it works well with the door.
"Wux like a chahm."
Looks so easy lol
Fixing architrave before installing the frame. How is that a good idea
Good question.
There are gonna be a lot of ruined doors due to this.
If you are diy. Watch multiple videos on anything you do and do what you think works best for your situation. Combine ideas if you have to.
Pretty common in production carpentry..
Needs to use the 'work shop' to build new doors for the 'work shop'.
Woks like cham!
Beast!
This guy sounds like the mark guy from zebra corner with all the Chevy commercials
Or Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers
While your working on that door you better fix them barn doors cause I can tell you it'll be a drafty cold winter in their
Werkz like uh chahm.
Josh Barron pre-hung his "First" comment before anyone else
He bought a house that needs complete renovation and he can't figure out a door? I wish you luck with the rest of the house.
Shims and screws that's all.
No, you guys have it all wrong. The real question we want to know from Tommy is should the toilet paper go over or under?
how many times do you think he said "level" in this video. lol
Woaks like a chaam
not to argue something simle ,but pre casing a door has been an arguement forever ,i say dont do it
This guy doesnt look enthused or appreciative at all!! Kind of a downer considering usually the homeowner is much more willing to help out
Hahaha what about Frank though?
Home Depot better change their name to Home Center.
Who thought their phone was buzzing at 4:12?
Why they film disgusting houses like this one. That tells how nasty the owner is
