Years ago my oldest brother & I would watch this old house & the new Yankee work shop every Sunday morning on PBS, my brother has since passed away so these short videos brings back some good memories.
I remember when This Old House started on PBS many, many years ago. My was watching it one day and started watching with. We both ended up loving it. Tom was probably just an apprentice back then.
I had a bonus room unfinished by the builder to safe some money and man all the videos from this channel made me a pro in finishing most of the work by myself. The only two thing I called professionals for was AC and plumbing. Thank you for your lessons.
There are lots of door installation vids on the 'toob that are fine if you like things quick and dirty, but this one shows the right way to do a door install. The difference between being a handyman and a carpenter.
Nice looking door. With the original door, all doors require annual maintenance or checks at minimum for tight sealing and shifting around the locking areas; it is one of the things home owners under maintain. And so, nice to see the detail of this installation since it covers a lot of knowledge on the subject!
So easy to fix a door handle in a mortise lock. The guy is whining about cold air. Put a storm door on there. Holy. Pahk the cah. Love Tom. He makes it all so easy looking.
Yeah, seemed like the problems of the old door were minor. Glass frosts up, ok in the grand scheme of things I doubt that is that much of a problem for heating, air gets in around the door... so seal it up better, door handle doesn't work... so replace it. Nah lets install a new door, and with that new door we need to seal up around the door, and install a new handle and lock, but hey at least those tiny panes of glass are insulated glass!
I liked the old door a lot better. And I can see why it was leaking air, no insulation around it when they took off the casing/trim inside. Personally I'd have fixed the door knob and put on a storm door to help stop the draft.
I have been all over U-TUBE looking for an exterior door video that covers the typical Florida home with a stucco finish. I haven't been able to find any that properly cover it, but this video covers what I think I'll need to do on my house. Back cut the stucco on the outside. Remove the trim on the inside and cut the screws/nails. Remove the door frame and reinstall from the inside.. Well, I hope that is correct!!!! I sure wish you guys would make a trip to Florida!!!! ;)
This seems to be a republished video but still remains very educational. Wish Tom would do one for weather stripping the door at the threshold to keep water from heavy rains from coming into the house! Also would like to see installation of Prehung with side window. Thanks TOH team!
Hahaha! Come to my house! I built the back porch and the back door has two posts on each side- yeah if that sucker ain't out of Plum and an odd size I don't know what is. I had to replace the door and went looking for whatever I could find but wanted one with glass. It's a plant porch room. So I found a door that would work cut it to fit and it's not carpentry work let's say. So anyway the door was painted black on one side. I said who would paint a door black? My cousin helped me and he said black doors matter. 😁
diver dave your crazy!! You can’t use a plumb bob on this and never caulk the outside part of threshold so water won’t get trapped!! Let me guess you have no idea what your talking about but just wanted to sound like you did right well it didn’t work for you this time bud !!!😅🤣🤣🤡😂👎🏻 no need for a door lock or knob is what you said, are you on crack???
Not sure why you'd want to remove the door from the frame before shimming and fastening. What better way is there to monitor the gap around the door than keeping it in place and using your eye?
What was used to seal gaps before spray foam? I don't like foam. Do bugs get through it? Foam burns quickly, right? Or did carpenters build doors on site and not have gaps?
In the episode this was taken from they have a clip at the end talking about how the homeowner finished it, and he did it right away and did it very well too.
The homeowner happens to be a carpenter as well, I went to technical school with him a few years ago, so knows how to do these things and why they're important.
Everyone's commenting Tom should come to their house so I had to tell my story. I built a plant porch onto the back of my house. I made the opening to the back door with posts on each side set in concrete and then attached the door to them with hinges. I'm not a carpenter by any means but could cut the door to fit. I now realize I need to redo it and put in a frame then a door because right now there's plastic bags shoved in all the way around it and I don't use it. LOL! Outside it has a storm door- hey when it's this messed up you got to try to fight the drafts- when I first put it on it was fitting good but with time gaps form around it cuz of movement I guess. Someone said Tommy should come to their house - he'd have a field day at mine. Well this isn't right- who did this? Um, uh. I plead the fifth! 😁
For a below grade basement exterior door in a stair well with a drain in front of it. What's the best way to install to make it waterproof even if the drain gets plugged or briefly gets backed up from very heavy rainfall?
You absolutely have to install longer hinge screws for security and to keep the door from sagging. Most prehung doors come with a tag advising the purchaser that the 1/2 inch screws are there to aide transport and installation only. Then again, that kwikset lock won't keep anyone out anyway.
I would love to see how he would have resolved that style threshold if it wasnt level. I have the style but it concerns ripping out the door only to find its no where near level then having to rip out stucco and the thick thresh hold. Other than that great video.
This probably should have mentioned the additional need for step/drip flashing at head if new brick mold, flashing tape studs at least the bottom of the stud, provide a sill pan under the threshold….if this door didn’t have a canopy over it, water proofing would be very different.
Pretty slick how they skip past the interior door trim replacement by saying very quickly "we made up some new trim". What was wrong with the old stuff and what had to be done to replace that intricate-looking trim?
When he said "plumb the jam," am I the only person that started quietly humming the tune to "Pump Up the Jam" by 90's band Technotronic? PLUMB THE JAM, PLUMB IT UP GET YO BOOTY ON THE FLOOR ... Just me? Ok. Nevermind.
I've got a customer with entry door . Double door appearance outside and single door inside. Inside the drywall is attatched to the stationary panel and is part of the interior room. Never replaced one of these. Any ideas ?
A brad nailer is typically 18 gauge and a finish nailer is 16 or 15 gauge, the smaller the gauge the thicker and more sturdy the nail, if you want to keep things simple just get a 16 gauge nailer, it works for most things.
Can somebody out there explain to me why my Therma-tru fiberglass door with a solid wood core leaks? Weirdest thing, moisture is showing up on the hinge side of the door below the first hinge. Wood is rotted between the fiberglass sandwich really bad at the bottom. It's rotted by almost half an inch deep. It does have a rubber weather seal around the door as well as a seal under the door to block moisture and air at the threshold. I need to know why it's leaking and rotting the wood between the fiberglass. Thanks for all your input.
The replacement is very nice, but I wished they kept the original door and repaired it. Personally, I think it clashes with the original Victorian details of the home.
This is a "This Old House" video. It isn't a how-to. It's for people who....well...I'm not entirely sure who it's for. But it's far from a proper how-to.
Years ago my oldest brother & I would watch this old house & the new Yankee work shop every Sunday morning on PBS, my brother has since passed away so these short videos brings back some good memories.
In very bad health but these videos are like a visit from an old friend. Beautiful little house by the way was never able to own one.
Such care, expertise, passion, and drive. Truly a legend!
Tom is such a master craftsman, who else loves spraying foam
This old house Tom and Norm great show. Top notch master carpenters. They have forgotten more than most know!!
I can watch Tom Sylva for hours,he is a great carpenter.
Tom Sylva is the coolest carpenter on the planet love watching him work excelente explanations 👌.
Tommy is so good, even if he gave away all of his secrets, he would still have 100 more by tomorrow morning!
I remember when This Old House started on PBS many, many years ago. My was watching it one day and started watching with. We both ended up loving it. Tom was probably just an apprentice back then.
@Pyroman / I'm pretty sure he's older than that.
I've seen some Tom Silva's from back when his hair was dark. Seems like he knew about as much then as he dos now.
I had a bonus room unfinished by the builder to safe some money and man all the videos from this channel made me a pro in finishing most of the work by myself. The only two thing I called professionals for was AC and plumbing. Thank you for your lessons.

Tom is the reason I’m a carpenter!!
Norm Abram for me, but it seems both could do about the same quality work.
I put these videos when I go to bed. Could listen to ole Tommy all night 😴💕👍
Nice looking door. Plumb Up That Jam Let's Get This party started !
Tom Silva is the man!
if i need help with my home you KNOW the first one ill be calling
Nothing gets me going more than Twammy pluming up some boards and a setting a nice thick bead of CAWLK.
Tommy, the OG of carpentry, along with Norm.
So easy to fix a door handle in a mortise lock.
The guy is whining about cold air. Put a storm door on there. Holy.
Pahk the cah. Love Tom. He makes it all so easy looking.
I liked how contemporary the old door was & fitting to the house. I don’t know why it’d be replaced.

Aaron Bays after he paints it it will match the window
could of bought a better wood door or even better a therma tru fiberglass door with similar style but it would be much more $$$$
Tom Sylva is the man 🙂

I pray it went well for you when you try to match up the stucco color if you patched.
Tom is a national treasure!!!

Nice looking door. Wouldn't you want to reinforce the door frame ? Looked like the gap was excessive? Thank you for sharing your videos 🙏
That was easy I want to see one where the house is all out of plum
Hahaha! Come to my house! I built the back porch and the back door has two posts on each side- yeah if that sucker ain't out of Plum and an odd size I don't know what is. oh look, the threshold and jamb are level and plumb! said no one ever...

If the door isnt plumb it will swing open by itself and not close good
hahaha true.they always get the easy jobs..most houses are crooked as shit and the doors never fit that easy.
i am a black man hello
TALENTED DUDE.
Fantastic job

I CAN'T DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A RULER, TOM IS DA MAN,
now see how long it takes the homeowner to prime/paint the door... 1 year, clock starts now
+refrigeration tech they almost never do it, and after some time they complain that it rots.
In the episode this was taken from they have a clip at the end talking about how the homeowner finished it, and he did it right away and did it very well too.
yeah really I like what u said I laughed my tale off for a strait hour!
The homeowner happens to be a carpenter as well, I went to technical school with him a few years ago, so knows how to do these things and why they're important.
yeah its kinda funny at our old house we had a big maple shaker door and you have to reseal it every 4 years.
Love the door
I always put longer screws in the hinges so the door doesn’t sag over time
How many door have u installed
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.
Really good looking door . Congrats !
Hey great video and thank you for sharing
So easy with the door pre fitted in a frame a good chippy would hang a door in the existing frame...that said tommy you are very good
Very true

You rock Tommy 👊👍
Excellent
Thanks guys! Because of you we don't have to be stupid homeowners.
tom you are the best
Good job tommi👍👍
Why did Tommy switch from Festool to Milwaukee? Just get a fiberglass door, no paint, no maintenance. I think prehung is more work, done it both ways.
For a below grade basement exterior door in a stair well with a drain in front of it. What's the best way to install to make it waterproof even if the drain gets plugged or briefly gets backed up from very heavy rainfall?
Great video, well explained. Thank you
everytime I see Tommy handle fiberglass without gloves, I die a little
Том, ты очень крут и харизматичен. Учусь многому у тебя, спасибо!
ENGLISH-LANGUAGE !!! ENGLISH-LANGUAGE !!!ENGLISH-LANGUAGE !!!! THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!!
Very good

hay tom, tomas or tommy, what ever you prefer, just wander if you have any tips for buying a doorknob
Very nice, but you should have rewired the doorbell while you had the casings off. (Signed "Evil Electrician).
Thank youI learn a lot. GOD/JESUS bless you...
NiceFront door

What size screws did Tom behind the weatherstripping?
This probably should have mentioned the additional need for step/drip flashing at head if new brick mold, flashing tape studs at least the bottom of the stud, provide a sill pan under the threshold….if this door didn’t have a canopy over it, water proofing would be very different.
What material (wood fiberglass steel) for doors is most sound proof so that I hear the least amount of outdoor noise?
evadesc ,
try earplugs! 😜
Awesome!
naaah.. I love this guy
Pretty slick how they skip past the interior door trim replacement by saying very quickly "we made up some new trim". What was wrong with the old stuff and what had to be done to replace that intricate-looking trim?

Plumbed! Up the jamb!
Plumbed it up! ;)
what is done when the frame below was removed for a inspection door below and it has gone out of true?
I've got a customer with entry door . Double door appearance outside and single door inside. Inside the drywall is attatched to the stationary panel and is part of the interior room. Never replaced one of these. Any ideas ?
I wish Tommy could visit my house. He would have a field day.
Hahahahahaha Sounds like my house!
Plumb, plumb the jamb, plumb it up, while the nailgun's thumpin.
question, between the irwin and the dewalt door installation kit which is better ?
Dewalt.
What kind of air gun do you used cause I want to buy one I don’t know which one it is any difference between Brad Nailer and finish nailer
same thing.
A brad nailer is typically 18 gauge and a finish nailer is 16 or 15 gauge, the smaller the gauge the thicker and more sturdy the nail, if you want to keep things simple just get a 16 gauge nailer, it works for most things.
Alternative title: Foam and shims.
One of two things that guy was so excited or was in shock lol
Can somebody out there explain to me why my Therma-tru fiberglass door with a solid wood core leaks? Weirdest thing, moisture is showing up on the hinge side of the door below the first hinge. Broken glass seal? Warranty?
you didn't put sealer on the sides
Tommy is well hung like his doors.
What exactly did he tack those nails in for at 5:24?
to hold the shims in place.
what would be the cost of the door, and the cost of labor.???
I bet it was close to a grand for everything. Those doors are expensive.
labor is very expensive for installs unless you get someone who doesn't know what they are doing and will mess everything up lol
How do you hang a door in a masonry house?
Mr Old Pueblo in a similar fashion but using masonry fixings
Masonry openings should have wood bucks(1x4PT) for nailers installed with appropriate fasteners
I saw the bottom gasket moving out of door and they cut it from video!
I Do NOT like that spray in foam because it shrinks alot over a short amount of time ! I'm surprised that Tom had used that cheap stuff !!
I wish he could come to my house and do my front door
The replacement is very nice, but I wished they kept the original door and repaired it. Personally, I think it clashes with the original Victorian details of the home.
Plumb, up the jamb, plumb it up, plumb the jamb 5:46
Why did Tom not use gloves for the installation of the fibreglass?
Tom eats Owen's pink fiberglass insulation for breakfast... He's built up an immunity.
Oh my God! Hahaha!
+KishenSedani ...stays crunchy in milk...
Touching insulation isn't a big deal at all, there seems to be an urban legend about it. Breathing it is a different story.
He barely put much in. No big deal.
Tommy using a husky nail gun???
Very amusing the way every house seems to have a flag in the front yard!!!
Seems to be pretty common in USA
Graham Deacy nnj
FlowerGrower Smith what’s wrong with having an American flag in the front of the house? I have 2 on mine.
First time He didn’t have festool drill why ?
Man, at 7:30 at the top right where the door meets the weatherstrip is a huge gap. That door is not right.
...no talk of adjusting for reveal?

Yeah, this video is based in reality.
Gee, no security on the hinge side of this door!
Plumb and level? Where’s the challenge in that?
This knocks out the lowes nonsense
I just saw this didn't I? I'm having a little doorja vu.
