    You mention that installing an interior door is the way to. Do you reccommend hiring a professional door installer to do my exterior door ?

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  Месяц назад +1

      These steps apply to interior or exterior. Interior are easier because they are generally smaller, lighter, no threshold involved and only one lock. lf you've never tried to install a door before, I would highly recommend hiring someone because it's really hard, and a front door needs to look and work great. I've been doing this for 15 years and it's easy to screw up a new door. If you want to try, here's a suggestion. Find a closet door in your house and remove it. Set it aside. Then go buy the cheapest door of the same size at Home Depot and try to install it. It's great practice and will cost less than $100 to learn. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you for the amazing step-by-step! Just curious, do you paint the doors afterward? Or do you typically leave that for the customers to handle?

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  10 месяцев назад +3

      I never get involved in painting and always tell my clients as much before we agree to work. I have no time or interest and I can't carry brushes, paint, buckets etc. I just do installation and repair. Also, during the install, a slab gets handled, shaped, test fitted numerous times and banged around even by the most careful installer. Also best to finish them after installation. Thanks for watching.

    Great video! 🫡
    How much should you charge for interior door installation?

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  5 месяцев назад +3

      I've run businesses in CA and TN and clients and economy are different. I always give the best price I can and these are the factors I consider.
      1. How long will it take? - Decide how much your time is worth and charge accordingly.
      2. How hard is it to do? - This could mean the level or expertise or physical labor. I charge more for rooftop doors than ground floor doors because it's simply harder to get heavy doors onto a roof. Interior doors are lighter and easier. Some exterior or solid interior doors weigh a ton. Sometimes there are many steps, small hallways, basement, park far away. That makes work harder.
      3. How busy are you? - When I started my business 15 yrs ago and had no clients, I'd work for whatever someone was willing to pay. I hung my first door for $25. Now my phone rings every day, so I set my own price.
      4. Client expectations - Some clients are facing tough times and I try to give a break within reason. Other clients are extremely demanding or want something done yesterday.
      5. I NEVER charge by the hour - I always give a flat rate based on my experience. That way nobody has to watch the clock.
      6. Economy and geography - In Los Angeles, people have crazy money and will spend whatever it takes to get it done well and get it done today. In Nashville, people are more conservative with their money and, rarely in a hurry, and not as demanding.
      Item 1 is really the most important. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      I use a 3/4" straight bit and I prefer the Diablo brand. Don't go cheap with router bits because the cheap ones burn up quickly. I also have 1/2" bits but I like the 3/4" because they cut a lot with each pass and it's faster. Thanks for watching.

    Can you do the same with a new metal slab door?

    • @askillthatpays
      @askillthatpays  6 месяцев назад

      That depends. If the door is ALL metal, then they can't be shaped, however, SOME metal doors have wood along the edges that can be shaped. If that's the case, then the same steps apply and here's a video of me installing that type of door. Thanks for watching.
