This was the best video I've watched on how to put in a door. I actually know nothing when it comes to this kinda stuff. But, I did this with the help of my 14yo son! Thank you!
Great job Erika 💪
this has to be the easiest pre hung door install period, great job man I will apply this technique the following week.
Thanks Omar ! I'm glad it helped you ! makes my day !
I have had a door I have reversed still waiting to be done. I now see it would be so much easier for me to remove the right swinging door and get a pre hung LEFT swing door and follow the easy way you explained the process. I am ashamed that I started something and thought that I could just switch the door and plane the high spots. What a problem I made for myself. Just getting a new door and trim will make MY project so much more easier now. Thank you so much for this video.
Jack - thanks for the comment!
Mike
Thanks man you made that extremely simple to follow.
Glad it helped!
Best video of this work so far
Thanks ! I know use trim screws… might want to pick them up. Smaller hole
Hello anyone I had doors made for my mobile home having a lot of trouble I didn’t do all theses steps glad I watched only thing is I need to know how to properly install the hinges correctly is there a video on ur channel ?? Thank u Joey
i don't have a video but there's some handy jiggs out there for that by ryobi. I used prehung so the hinges were already installed
Straight to it!!! Thanks for this video!!!
thanks frank !!!
Great job. Such simple and accurate instructions!! Helped me a great deal. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad it helped you ! Thanks for the nice comment !
great down to earth hey we gotta get it done guy love it great video
Thanks a lot Edward, appreciate the nice comment !

This helped me out sooooo much. Thank you!!!
Thanks a lot! Very helpful.
Eric - you are welcome ! Thanks for watching, I appreciate you !
Thanks
Mike
Advice on what I could do if the stud that will have the hinge side has a slight twist towards the bottom? How can I shim that?
run a screw into it to force the stud straight, if framed correctly there should be another stud behind it …. or just persuade it with a couple hammer hits …. if that doesn’t work i’d chisel it off. just make as flat as you can.
I suppose if you don’t have nail guns, screws are an option. I’ve installed doors for 30 years and never used screws to install interior doors.
I have about 8 nail guns or more lol(yeah to many) … Just because you’ve done something for 30 years doesn’t make it right, or wrong for that matter. I prefer screws for door installs but if you prefer nails, go wild my man. Maybe one day I’ll prefer nails, who knows, I definitely have changed over the years, I hope for the better! So if nails are truly better, maybe one day I’ll prefer them!
Happy Holidays Larry !
Mike
Very nice job my friend. You have a new subscriber. Where do you live? Are you in the USA?
Thanks for subscribing I’m in Pennsylvania. But based on the weather the last few weeks I feel like I live in Canada lol. Happy new year
After doing this for 30 years I am mind blown... where is the Advil.
Great video! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for watching ! And thanks for the comment !!! Now get out there and hang doors !!!
Thanks again,
Mike
Wow, craftsmanship of doors suck. I put in a few doors years ago. I would pull the molding and a screw off of each hinge. Ef it. now we just screw through the molding. And the molding is one piece as its formed with particle board. Thanks for the video. have to relearn how to hang these cheap ass doors.
This guys funny first you always use a 6 foot level especially if your making a RUclips video the way he showed you doesn't work hence the cuts in filming, second you measure the door frame so you don't have a massive gap on one side, third you use a smaller level or a lazer level to check the floor for level what if the latch side needed to go up when you closed the door? You would need to lift it even higher and there would be a big gap at the bottom, fourth you take the door stops of there only pinned on lightly so you can do this, once you have finished you put the door stops back and they hide the screws, 5th you will definitely need more screws on the keeper latch side,
lol - door hung two years ago, still plumb, still level, still latches like the day it was installed, actually installed six doors that day, the same way - all still perfect. remember there’s more than one way to skin a cat and there’s more than one way to hang a door. i’ll take your criticism as a learning event, hope you do the same. if your a father, happy father’s day !
-Mike aka 4ft level guy
Man with all those clips around ur waist might as well get a proper tool bag 😂

thanks for this ! i’m going to add to description
Thanks for the simplicity. Screws, not nail guns, hing side 1st. Addressing the reveal. You just made my day before hanging 5 doors!
I’m glad it helped. I just posted an updated video… maybe check that one out too !
The screws go in the middle. They’re not spread out wider, right? I put three on the side and how many on top? Oh, what is the minimal length the level can be? I think mine is only 2 ft long. Thanks
3 on the sides, 2 on the top should be plenty.
Videos like this are so helpful to home projects. I was able to refinish my basement (with no construction experience) using videos like this. Thanks for taking the time to help educate people on how to DIY projects like this.
Except now you have a 2 inch gap on your latch side. You should center the door in the jam.
this is correct, but doesn't cause issue, plus it will be covered by casing. Being centered in RO doesn't impact door functionality, especially an interior door.
For the love of God, Country and Bob Villa do not install interior doors with screws!!!
Give the tool belt back to your wife and go back to systems analysis...

Installed my first (not my last) door, in an ongoing renovation, by following your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Thanks so much for the nice comment, I'm so happy that this helped you ! That's the point of all this and thanks for your nice comment !!! now get our there an install DOORS !! LOL
Thanks,
Mike
Well, it gave me a laugh...good attempt, but do yourself a favor and don't half ass it. I saw you check the stud the one direction and found it was out, and you never checked the wall for plumb...if you are doing an instructional type video, let the people know to also check plumb the other way...following the flushness of the sheetrock will get you into trouble. You can always adjust the difference in flushness in the trim, but a square and plumb door is the goal. No one likes when a door isn't flat in a wall.
Also, go that extra step make all 3 reveals the same, 6 points of contact is the 1st step...make those reveals perfect
Jeez man, who peed in your cheerios ! Lol, it’s a door hanging video dude.
Get out there an help people and get off the internet. I get constructive feedback/criticism in the comments and I welcome it, actually, I ask for it, I’ve even made multiple videos highlighting those inputs but zero parts of your comment were constructive or nice. Hey, maybe I was a lil hard on the beav, but you are doing a video about door installation...A job which I actually do for a living amongst other trim aspects and all around building in NY...I was watching to see what's being taught these days and in my personal opinion, and profesional one, you gave it a decent attempt, but just weren't taught the proper efficient way.
If you got your feelings hurt that wasn't my intent.
So when measuring for a replacement door, you don’t measure the door, just the rough opening?
you got it !
nice video, using common tools we already have! watched some other youtube vids where the guy says easy pre-hung door install for the average home owner/DIY'R but uses $3k in laser levels and nail guns to do it??? i just needed a video like yours that does the same job with some basic tools, THANKS!
Thankyou ! I appreciate the nice comment and I hope this helps you ! I wish the video was a tad shorter... but thanks for watching and thanks for the nice comment !!!
Thanks,
Mike
Just the one tip about putting shims under the jams alone was worth my time to watch this. Thanks so much. About to dig in
Why would you put screws in a couple of finish nails would not leave quite that big a hole
Agree - I actually have switched to trim screws a few years ago, way better.
But I agree ;)
Thanks
Mike
How are you filling the holes in the door frame ? What product works the best ?
Try Drydex - can get at most big box stores.
Definitely one of the better installation videos I’ve watched. Watching and referring to your video has made the process seem a lot less overwhelming. Thanks for sharing.
Great to hear!
One potential problem with the 1 inch shims on the latch side is trim casings may look "off balance" by 1 inch if there is a narrow wall like a door near a corner or in a bathroom.
correct. I def left the casing detail out of the video and it's important i agree. if the finishing casing placement is important in a specific install it should be considered before installing anything - agree. But in most cases it doesn't matter if it's 1'' this way or that way.
You should have included how the casing was installed.
I agree. Just posted a closet video where I showed how to case a door, But casing is such a personal choice.
Who ever hung the drywall is ass at their job
I did and it looks great, what’s wrong with the drywall ? i’m dying to know - lol
I am about to tackle this for the 1st time. Most DIY videos assume that we all have an extensive selection of tools/laser levels etc and I do not. Thank you. (what is the saw that you used at the end)
Called a multi tool. Very useful tool!
Glad it helped !
Mike
Thanks for the great tips. They worked great in a 120 year old house that has zero square, plumb, level uh well anything. You made my life way easier today. Again thanks.
Thank you for the nice words !
Perfect! Now I don’t have to buy a third nail-gun. Thanks!
Glad to help !
Appreciate you watching ,
Mike
Great video I have 6 Prehung doors to replace and this video made me feel like it’s going to go smoothly. What’s that white block you put behind the shim on the door handle side is that a different size shim ?
Yeah - was just a different size. Because of the layout the rough opening was a tad larger than needed ….
I’m glad this helped ! There’s many way to skin a cat !
Mike
Hanging a couple of doors tonight. First time. You made it look so easy. Thanks!
Based on other peoples comments, this is perfect for a first timer ! Also, can be done like this over and over... I like doing it this way, even after hanging a bunch of doors.
I hope it goes well !!! Please let me know how it went !
Thanks
Mike
Your video was a lot easier to understand then this old houses explanation of hanging a prehung door so thank you
I always pop the stop moldings off and shoot my nails/screws in that line - painters love me…….
Aaron makes perfect sense !
Very good video. Love the idea of shimming the door to start with, to get it plumb. Saves a ton of time.
thankyou !
If hinge side stud is plumb , put hinge side tight to that , then shim top and strike side after. I don’t shim hinge side if I don’t have to. Thanks . Good job !
Shouldn’t you have removed the door jam trim first? If that trim needs replaced, screws removed, the entire door will have to be redone. Also, by removing the trim first and then running the screws, the trim will hid the screws.
its not a bad idea, i don’t do it but it would work. at the end of the day your filling holes, either screw hole(s) or trim nail holes. you can cover the screw holes without any issue…
What if I have flooring down? I’m replacing old doors with 3 panel maple doors. The flooring wasn’t all the way through the threshold nor out away from the jam enough to put new pre-hung in.
Brian, I’m not sure I understand fully. I’m sorry - I don’t want to give wrong advice.
I’d say do the first door slowly and see if it works out. If not, you may need to cut the jams if you floor is unlevel so that you can go directly the the floor.
In that case you just run a level line in the door way and measure down each side and then determine you high point. How ever much it’s high, remove that much from the jam. That will make the door level and the jams hitting the floor.
for youtube algorithm
Thanks !
Thanks, watched many videos on this, yours was the most informative 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
How did you make sure the door was plum forward and backward, relative to the plane of the closed door? That is, what if the framing was not plumb? You lined it up to the drywall, which might not be vertical.
Mike,
Thanks for the comment and question - it makes sense. I'm not to concerned with the framing being plumb that way as much as i'm concerned with the hinge side (left to right) being plumb. The wall is what it is and doesn't impact the overall install. so, i guess what i'm trying to say is IMO it doesn't matter that much. if the wall was that out of plumb you'd have bigger issues, i'm sure it's plumb enough. I even walked around my house today to see how plumb my existing (builder installed 30 yrs ago) door frames were, most were very out of plumb that way and this doesn't impact the door at all. I hope this makes sense...
does this make sense ?
Walk around your house and check how plumb the doors are that way...
let me know ...
Thanks again !
Mike

I installed a prehung door yesterday and your instructions worked great. The little things to look for paid off as well as the order of tasks to be done. Thank you for doing the video!
Glad it helped !!!
Thank you for showing how to get rid of the shims at the end as well!
Nichelle - no problem at all ! Thankyou for watching ! I appreciate the comment !
If the Gap is larger, it's sometimes better to just use more shims, which makes them each thinner, which then makes them easier to cut. So you'll cut maybe four thin shims, rather then one thick shim.
Thanks for watching,
Mike
7:01 Tell me something my friend; what do you think about the folks who say not to put screws through the staffers as you are doing here; are used to do it that way but then I watch the video that says don’t do that; do you see any problem with putting the screw ride through the door stopper as you are doing here?
Spencer, i’ve been doing it like this for year, without any issues. cover them up with some wood putty, paint and all good !
could you see any issues with this approach? always wondering about this stuff.
Thanks
Mike
Just installed my prehung door using your technique and it came out way better than anticipated! I don't have the oscillating cutter tool yet so I gently scored the shims flush with a sharp blade using as many passes as needed. Thanks for a common sense simple method that is totally solid
Glad it worked for you John !

Nice install. Maybe nextime use a solid piece for the big gap.
Good idea!
Great video. Thanks for your help!!
Nice video really helped me to hang my first pre hung door...thanks Chuck
Chuck you’re welcome sir ! Im glad it helped ! BTW- sweet hat !
Thanks Mike
What if the floor across the jamb isn't level? I'm doing a basement and one side is lower than the other
Lara - great question. I talk about this at the 3:45 ish mark and again later in the video. Thats why I add shims to the bottom before I install the door. If it's really bad you should.concider added two shims. Then pulling out the ones that are needed during install.
Thanks for watching !!!

You made it look easy the way you did it thanks for sharing your expertise to show me how to install my doors . . I have 14 to install hoping to have them done over the weekend . Thanks again
Keep in mind the bottom with finish floors.
@@FamilyDIYtv Are you saying to initially lay shims on the floor with something the thickness of the finish flooring PLUS the additional shim thickness for movement?
@@brandonmorrison7231 I’d do thickness of finished floor.
Nice one. Thanks.
As a professional installer, wow! The amount of detail you put in and make it so simple blows me away! There are so many bad installs out there but thank you for showing everyone the right way!

Will be a Spring project.
I’m in Toronto.
Right now Winter’s taking it’s grip.
Thank you again 🙏,
@@connelljacintorealestate4361 one thing - with an entry door you can’t shim the sides up because the bottom threshold must contact the sill 100% ! So when you remove the old door the first thing I’d do I make the bottom sill perfectly level in both directions. Can’t shim the bottom sill. I have a video on converting a window to door. Sorta talks about it in that video. Might be more relevant for exterior door install.
Awesome!! Thanks
By far this is the easiest illustration. Thank u sir.

Great job.. Nice easy to follow install
Thanks Dave ! I'm happy it helped you.
Since I see you're a good responder, I have a question? I can't find a video that tells me if the prehung door should be kept off the subfloor by about 1/2 inch if we're going install carpet flooring. Or whether it should be installed before or after flooring?
to be safe I'd install 1/2 up, it will keep the door from dragging on the carpet after installed.
But this depends on the thickness of carpet, if very thin carpet you may want to go to floor, but if thick carpet you may want to install high.
Either way, if the door drags on carpet after you install, you can always cut 1/2 inch off bottom of door.
Sorry - it's not a one size fits all answer..
Thanks I needed that , you made my Sunday project look super simple, thanks again
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Glad I could help
Thank you for the great video. I need to install a double door on a closet that opens in the center to clear a gun safe. I am certain the framing is not square. When doing a double door would it be best to plum one side and start the install from there just like you did here working your way around the door even though both sides are hinge sides? Thanks!
Yes, do exactly that. I show it in this video - enjoy the safe !
ruclips.net/video/RWG877rXhHM/видео.html
The shims on the bottom are useless. Your argument was that if you need that space you’ll have it by removing the shims but if you need that space it’s because you put the shims in. Save yourself the trouble and put the shims in the top.
Thanks for the comment but I disagree. The shims are there to compensate for an unlevel floor. The shims being added to the hinge side, had nothing to do with latch side. If you didn't see it, I showed exactly why you add the shims to the bottom.
One fair criticism that I haven't seen posted is that my installation technic assumes this was being installed over a subfloor, not finished floor and I didn't bring this assumption up during the video. If this was a finished floor, i could see a scenario where the shims could cause a cosmetic issue. But in all my years installing doors as a homeowner, i can only think of one scenario where i was installing over finished floor. usually doors and floors are being done at same time... but not always.
Thanks again,
Mike
Thanks for posting. Awesome instructions
Was that a solid core door? I see most installs use nails, I was going to either rent a gun or buy one since I’ll be doing all the doors eventually. I never thought about screws because I didn’t know if it would damage the wood
Ray - no, it's a hollow core door. I use screws, don't see a need to use nails. Also, for a DIYer screws are allot more forgiving, meaning if you make a mistake you can pull the screw out. With a nail it becomes a tad harder to make those small adjustments. I'd invest in a nice drill/impact combo and trim nail gun.
If your worrying about the woods splitting, just predrill the holes.
Good luck with your project and consider subscribing !
