I learn things I don't really use, but it's fun to stretch my brain while watching and listening to experts. When I have a project I'm not comfortable with doing myself and have to hire out the work, I have some idea of what needs to be done and can discuss it intelligently with the person who will be doing it.

  • @CorbinAce
    @CorbinAce 4 месяца назад +2

    I have wondered for years about Tom Silva.
    Reason is, in the early 60s When I was discharged from the Army I worked with friend named Joe Silva. He and his family, wife two sons and a daughter, lived in Islington Massachusetts.
    We became good fishing buddies Joe and I. Unbelievably Joe's youngest son's name was Tommy.
    Tom Silva is an Identical twin to my old friend Joe. His personality, build, facial features are all absolutely identical to Joe Silva.
    Joe was more than twice my age at the time but we both loved fishing and we fished nearly every weekend for quite a few years.
    I tried quite a few times to communicate with Tom to ask if my old friend Joe Silva was his father to no avail.
    Though I'm thinking both Tom's would be close to each other's age I finally know he is not Joes son.

I’m sure he doesn't remember me from the past, I’m a retired contractor formerly from Boston and have always been impressed with his sharing of knowledge with homeowners and the public. Can’t remember the exact time if it was before or the beginning of This Old House but over time I met him, Bob Villa, and had lunch with Norm Abrams with an invite to his shop after in his hometown and was fortunate to have numerous introductions to sports celebrities thanks to friends and clients.

Everyone has their op to shine and while Bob Villa wasn't my favorite, he’s a household name and deserves to be recognized for his part in the TOH success. I wouldn’t hire him as a contractor but always said part of my business was because of Bob, he told homeowners they could DIY, and they can’t and needed a contractor to fix it. Then there is Norm Abrahams, awesome guy, met on the sidewalk and had lunch in his hometown by accident, a real contractor, craftsman and furniture maker, charisma not so much but he showed viewers his remarkable skills even though some was done on equipment even most contactors don’t even own. Bob Villa was the original ringmaster with the vision to put it altogether and if nothing else thank him for that.

One show done on a First generation house in Massachusetts, a Red House turned almost Cantaloupe orange according to the new color the home owners chose I watched the entire transformation from very first show and then when I was supposed to see the final show with the tour of the completed project I never saw it and can't even find it looking it up on U-Tube. I find other episodes of that house being worked on but have never seen the completed episode and it's extremely frustrating and disappointing to almost making me disillusioned.

    Sure are a lot of folks complaining that the video about Tom Silva is not talking about Norm. In a video about Tom Silva. In a video. About. Tom Silva.

    Was hoping to learn something new based upon that title. Was disappointed to learn this was simply another empty clickbait title. Channel gets blip for this comment engagement… but a hit for downflag and block.

      Rodger and Norm were the true tradesmen. All the others just made it look good for the camera and had their helpers do all the real work.

      The host after Bob Vila was Steve Thomas

    • @philipethier9136
      @philipethier9136 4 месяца назад

      @@roberth3793 Yes. Steve Thomas has been in the wooden-boat trade before TOH. Kevin was not in the trades. He was actually the resident owner of a house these guys worked on, and the producers hired him as host. The fact that Kevin didn't know anything about the trades is a running gag on the shows.
