Tuning Your Baitcaster to Prevent Birds Nest

  • In this video demonstration, I show you how to properly tune your bait-caster by making subtle adjustments to the cast control mechanism and the spool tensioner knob located on the right side of the reel. The most common types of brake systems on today's reels usually are magnetic brakes, centrifugal brakes, or pin. By adjusting the brake system you can control the speed of the spools revolution which gives you ultimate control and helps eliminate birds nest AKA backlash. My goal for this video is to help you learn how to master your reel. Adjusting the tensioner will help control the velocity of the lure, ideally, you should be able to free spool your reel and the lure should fall to the ground without backlash. Make adjustments until you reach the desired speed. If you like this video, please give a thumbs up, share, and subscribe.

      Hey Josh . This was an excellent video . I have a Abu Garcia 7001 and I’ve just started practicing in a field . It’s been great so far , although I did had one small birds nest ,but came out of it ok 😌
      Also I’m so glad that finally somebody has explained what the spool tension dial knob and brake dial knob on a reel are for in simple terms , as some people get to technical about them !

      Some of the baitcasters have braid spooled on them from the store. What I'm wondering is, are all baitcasters braid ready, or is there something to apply to a bare spool that grabs the braid better, like some spinning reels have?

    Thanks for the video. I fished baitcasters as a teenager and switched to spinning reels for the past 20 years or so fishing trout streams and salt water. Now I am getting back into river fishing and need to have the variety of setups including baitcasters. I am too proud to ask someone to teach me this stuff again so this is a big help! Very simple and informative.

    Great Instructional video. I started with baitcaster sixty years ago with no idea how to use it. Fortunately my great uncle was an old time fisherman. He chuckled a bit and showed me how it worked. The reel cost $2.00, Rod $1.00 and line $0.60. I bought two lures for $1.00 each, a yellow Heddon Sonar and an orange Optic. I immediately lost the Sonar but still have the Optic. Guys, Fishing has changed a bunch over the years. Hope you all have at least Sixty years of great fishing. Teach a kid to fish.

    Got my 1st baitcaster reel, Abu Garcia Revo Toro. My buddy basically explained what you said while I was throwing that baby on a tuna stick. I figured I got it right ready for trip out to the kelp beds. Long story short, I was apart of that 1% that gets the backlash. Luckily I had barely enough cell service that far out and came across your backlash video. Now that I'm home, I've watched this twice already. Gaining more confidence with each view. Thank you for the tips on tuning and getting the birdnest out

      I got a bait caster some 30 yrs ago for my birthday. I'd always used spin casters. Tried the baitcaster and put it back in the box. I got it out this year - still looks brand new . Got an expensive medium-heavy rod. Can't throw a lure or bait as any where. Probably trying too light. Got some 1/2 oz sinkers to try. If that isn't working, back in the box...

    I’ve watched your videos so thanks. But you as well as many others don’t do a good job of explaining the nuance of tuning the bait caster and how you STILL NEED TO THUMB IT on the cast. Drove me crazy trying to figure that out. And the braking system was described as being oh so important. BS, it’s the tension adjustment on the right side that fine tunes whether birds nest happens. I had to watch multiple videos multiple times to put it all together.

    I've watched many vids on how to do this and this is the first one that actually helped, seeing every time I cast it becomes a rats nest. So thanks for the help and great vid.

    Attention all fishermen! I am 59 years old. I have never fished with a Bait caster reel. I mean never even looked at One. I am a spin caster with a 2500 reel and a spin Ugly Stick medium heavy. 12 pound test mono and Braided line low vis green. Rattle Traps, Chartruse spinner baits, Senko's in Green Pumpkin color Texas rigged. My friend bought me a Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel and I bought a 6'6 medium heavy Ugly Stick. Today, I put the combo together. Put a Green Pumpkin shammy stick worm Texas rig on. My friend showed me how to adjust magnets and tension and drag. Let the lure drop by gravity! Set the magnets to 7 on the left side and then set the drag. Had a little trouble at first then got better and better and better caught 6 largemouth bass. Still spin tackle and reels have my heart. But,The Baitcaster is the bomb. Buttery smooth. Made the reel back lash so I could learn how to fix them. So, Fishermen get out there and learn how to use a baitcaster rod and reel. Why wait get started today. Watch this guy and set up your reel right. Then learn how to get The bird nest out. You Will Love it. I promise! See you at the lakes! SHAWN

    I watched your video before trying my baitcaster. First time EVER attempting to use a baitcaster. Just an inexpensive Abu Garcia I was able to pickup for almost free, so I could learn.
    Took me about 5 minutes to dial that puppy in for a weightless fluke.
    Thank you for the instruction!
    Now I'm ready for Saturday.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  6 лет назад +1

      Fill the spool to where it is just below the beveled area on the spool. If you over fill you will have a terrible time with birds nest.

    Thanks a lot man! I started with a spinner, never got it down good, then went and bought a baitcaster. 2 casts, two birds nests, and a lot of wasted line later, I did a quick search to figure out how the bleep to use these things! Thanks a lot for the breakdown!

  • @travislouisseize7755

    First video I see that takes the time to properly explain the purpose of the brake and tension on the spool and how to adjust them correctly rather than saying oh just practice until you are good enough not to have back lashes

    I have 2 black maxx and a pflueger casting reels,I can get a few good casts out of them and then they backlash just as many casts as I have good ones I have adjusted to no avail it's driving me nuts

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 лет назад

      That is interesting, I was going to say you may have a brake issue you but it's on two different reels, I could only equate it to user error. Do you have the cast control turned to the highest setting?

    • @mitchellhelms7238
      @mitchellhelms7238 7 лет назад +1

      Joshua Taylor I've tried everything with the black maxx it still does it but not as bad the pflueger I tried to get the slack out of spool but no good but I'll keep at it til I get it fixed I'm very determined to get it rite

    • @huntingwithpride
      @huntingwithpride 7 лет назад +2

      Mitchell Helms hey man I know your comments a month old but if this helps two buddies of mine bought that same reel the black Maxx and I never heard nothing about it from them other than problems. With the backlash and the spool mostly. One of them almost got out of using baitcasters altogether thinking he was the problem. His reel before it broke due to age and use I reckon but he bought a new one from a different brand he's still fishing to this day I might would look into maybe buying a new reel I know they both did.

    • @adamdahlin721
      @adamdahlin721 6 лет назад +1

      When you adjust them, turn the brakes all the way down, then adjust the tension til your lure drops at a steady pace, not fast and free, then turn the brakes back up. Your lure should almost stop on it's own when it hits the floor when you let it drop after turning the breaks back up.

    Birds nested it so badly the first cast I was back to the spinning rod. Came home and watched this and honestly me liking and subscribing doesn't seem enough for the value I got.
