  • In this video, I demonstrate how to cast a baitcaster for beginners. It's important to be sure that you properly tune your baitcaster for each lure weight prior to casting. I highly recommend that you watch my fine-tuning a baitcaster video below before casting. Typically you learn to cast a baitcaster using the overhand cast or the sidearm cast. When casting you should really concentrate and make sure that you are using a good arc when casting to prevent unwanted backlashes. Have a look at these videos:
    • Tuning Your Baitcaster... (How to Tune Your Baitcaster)
    • How to fine tune a DUA... (How to a dual brake baitcaster)

I’m a total beginner, and I have no idea what some of the terms you’re describing are. What is feathering? When you say you’re “thumbing” it, does that just mean you’re pressing down the entire time you’re casting?

Jonathan Gatica baitcaster over spinning reel because you have so much more control over your cast and your lure. You can use any kind of lure with them, and the lure seems to move better in my opinion. Overall the baitcaster is lighter, smoother, and much more fun to use when you master the technique!!!

Anyway, trying side casting and then overcasting, I can firsthand say, over was the worst idea I had and the bird nesting I always heard about hit hard lol. After watching this video, I did the lure drop to floor test and tweaked the brake and tensioner and cant wait to SIDE cast again tomorrow for some hopeful longer distance casting! Bill Dance method of simple backlash correction:
Immediately after backlash, without picking at the line and especially without PULLING ON THE LINE, simply tighten the drag ALL THE WAY DOWN, press hard on the backlashed spool with your left thumb, all while turning the reel handle two or three turns. You want to press as hard as you can and still turn the handle. Next, release spool button and pull out tag line SLOWLY. Usually, two or three turns does the job, although it may take several depending on how bad it is. Try to avoid picking at the loops on the spool. This works 99 percent of the time. Your welcome. (Dont forget to reset the drag!)

    Newbie fisher here,
I Just bought my first fishing pole ever yesterday. I bought one with a Baitcaster and I never knew how hard they were to learn at first. I've been getting birdnests everytime I cast out.
This video has helped a lot. Thank you so much!

This is helpful but I don’t understand the appeal of baitcasters, why bother? With the spinning reel being easier and less fussy what’s the appeal of having a reel that requires extra work like that

    • @LastBastian

I was about to ask the exact same. What is the point of this overly finicky, unreliable reel?
Is there some advantage that outweighs the massive headache these things induce??

@Michael Antonio I find that they are. You have way more say in line tension and the accuracy is finer. However, it is a learning curve. I spent an hour at the shore just casting and getting used to not spooling up the line.

I bought a baitcaster combo from a local Salvation Army store for $5 and as you can imgine, found myself in many a bird's nest. I suspect the reason it was "donated" is because it's previous owner had not watched one of your videos. I lost a lot of the braid line that was on there before trying some fresh mono that I had lying around, only to find out the mono did it too. Now the thing is OLD but the spool seemed to spin more than freely. I'll try the tension knob next. Thanks for the huge help, at least now I will be able to see if my $5 entry into the baitcasting world was worth it

Great vid and channel. QUESTION: can you please explain why you and almost all bass anglers use baitcasters with right side handle? You guys are likely all right handed so wouldn't you prefer to naturally use your dominant stronger hand/arm to hold the reel/rod to fight & land bass?? And most obviously and important you wouldn't need to be switching hands all day every cast. Makes no sense to me. The only reason o can think of is to have your stronger arm ready to grab a net for a tank. "its how i lve done it since a kid" is not a legit reason. Thanks sir
