I'm a big plasma cannon guy. Blast gives it comparable if not better attacks into infantry, it wounds T3 enemies on 2's, has better AP, and dunks on marines when overcharged. It also has the same range as a heavy bolter
Also against T10 vehicles it wounds on a 5+ instead of a 6+. Plasma Cannons are still superior to HB's at least against vehicles unless you somehow roll 5 or 6 sustained hits.
The biggest downside with plasma for me on my vehicles is the blast keyword. Since the big gun usually also is blast I can't shoot myself out of combat.
I love the heavy bolter but would mostly take melta instead if possible. And for shooting the plasma is better except for shooting in combat as I mentioned.
Plasma definitely wins the rule of cool for me...nothing like seeing a bit of neon orange or green on the board
I will also be sticking to plasma cannons. I do usually have 1 tank I designate as a forward operator which I will take less blast on, but yeah I think Plasma is still the better option
3 thoughts on bolters vs plasma in favor of bolters. It fires consistent shots which saves time in a timed event. Not a lot, but we are rolling a lot of dice. The starter box Russ didn't (to my knowledge) come with plasma. So it's a lot cheaper/easier to get heavy bolters in real money. It can't accidentally damage you. It's a minor problem but one that can bite you always at the worst time. That said I think it's worth taking plasma on most units.
Heres a build. Platoon cmd squad with heavy bolter, medipack, and master vox attached to 20 man infatry squad with 2 heavy bolters. Platoon commander has drill enhancement so stationary 5+ with sustained and lethals against infantry. You get the line of sight coverage extra hits and if you want fields of fire
And this might be alright but the boards are clogged up with too much terrain for line of sight. These things do good sitting in a good spot and staying still. All of this L-Shaped building crap is great for artillery but not so good for units that need to sit still and have a line of sight. I get what he's saying but it is kind of limited. I have one but haven't used it in 10th edition.
@@ColonelHoganStalag13 A counter to this is to L shapes is to put it in reserve and ingress it in. i've had success within 25 guys appearing where the enemy don't want them.
Drill Commander is really only good on casual maps imo.

Heavy bolters have always been pretty good against most infantry, barring a few notable exceptions. Against hard targets, having a source of lethal hits is necessary

Fishing for 6's is not solving an issues and i ran a ton of heavy bolters to find out if it did. Multimelta is still has more upside on vehicles.Autocannnons are still the best option for HWT

Autocannons are the way to go. Increase their AP with Fields of Fire, Exterminator Tank, and No Cover with Hellhound. Boom, AP -3 Dmg 3 Autocannons with lethals.

I've been running Plasma on my sponsons for multi-purpose weapons. The extra AP, damage when needed, and the fact that blast compares pretty well against 1 extra shot and sustained hits against infantry made it an easy choice. I love the Heavy Bolter though, and do run it on all the other vehicles instead of Heavy Flamers or Multi-lasers.
I don't know. I'm not a fan of fishing for sixes. Now plasma cannon's on the other hand have become quite a bit appealing to me. Can't resist the allure of blast and the extra AP
Ok ok hear me out 20 man infantry squad and command squad tripple heavy bolter and drill commander for 5+ lethals and sustained sitting on home objective with lord solar. Squad will be pretty beefy with cover and FnP at all times and you could still hide a good part of the unit behind a ruin so when your meatshields start thinning out you can remove the heavy bolters as casualties to hide the unit out of LoS. Gives the supreme command squad some use as a fire base rather than just hiding all game and is still fairly safe if you position it well
Well could also have them go to ap 3 with the exterminators ability to add ap to the target that its auto cannons hit.
The thing with this is that then you would have fired at least two units at it already, including a Leman Russ!
That doesn't make the bolters bad but it's an odd thing to build for.
Dont forget the Exterminator Leman Russ! When there's a really hard target, hit it with all your AP debuffs and tear chunks out of it!
I don't dislike the heavy bolter, but I think the autocannon still outshines it in most circumstances. Flat damage 3 is a sure shock to the opponent!
I do need to play some more Pariah Nexus, but Terrain Layout 8 is actually more closed than any of the four Leviathan maps. And Layout 7 seems to be very closed off too. Stay sharp out there commanders.
If heavy bolters are on the menu for the Guard with lethal hits...what about multi-lasers on Sentinel's? Or is Plasma superior because of the blast rule?
Personally I think Plasma is the new king for Sentinels. Blast for infantry units and lethal for vehicles/monsters. Plasma also has good AP.
Multi lasers are held back by their damage. Four shots at damage 1 means even if you tack on some AP theyre never going to compete with the other options.
A strategically positioned Scout Sentinel with a multi-laser will never be fired at, lol.
I have almost always enjoyed heavy bolters, on chimeras, super heavies, HW teams. Rarely on russ's

Vehicle heavy bolters I feel like are never the call.
Leave tank busting to the vanquishers, Lascannons, and main tank turrets.
I believe sponsons are best to be saved for Elite infantry. Plasma and melta are still good into anything you can shoot a heavy bolter into, pick a sponsons with a more dedicated purpose.

Hey Mordian! Im prepping to go to the Baltic Cup GT next week and got like ~10 practice games in now in the last 2 weeks. Baltic cup is running GW piriah nexus layouts now and not WTC. Yes there now is a considerable shooting lane on most maps BUT (yes biiiig but) its rarely usable or so small you can easily avoid it. Some setups allow for next to no LOS thats more then 18" long (theres one rly rly bad layout which has 2 ruins in the middle blocking 2/3rds and in the middle a quartet of 4 small ruins around the objective.. you cant use any range there mostly. So yes its more open then WTC.. but its not rly enough to warrant bringing 24"+ weaponry if you have strong short ranged stuff available instead. Ive opted for Plasmacanons on my 2 Exterminators and my 2 tankcomanders SHOULD both be running multimeltas and Demolishers (ive got one built with heavy bolters and purely bring em for WYSWYG purposes) my single dorn also running Multimelter sponsons.
Just played a game of mech guard Vs cybernetica admech. Let me tell you, the heavy bolters don't cut it. You need some source of ap improvement and even then, hitting on 4s isn't great. Also sucks that two of the fixed secondaries (hell almost three if you count assassinate) directly counter nearly all guard builds. I dunno man, when I wanna put everything I think I need in a list I'll probably come to like 2500 points, which is ridiculous as guard. Probably just need some more experience as a tank commander, I've only played infantry spam since I started the army.
The points to our infantry need to plummet into the toilet. 30-40 points for the various squads.

I think the autocannon is better in a heavy weapons squad and def the new hottness on armored sentinels. Maybe take a look into those mordian?
Less shots sure but more strength more damage puts them very well suited for going against elites. Now our tanks dont get lethals on the sponson weapons into terminators anymore, we need our infantry to do it and i believe the auto cannon is perfectly suited for this. What you think?
Are Heavy Weapon Squads armed with Heavy Bolters even viable? Any time I put any direct fire squads on the table they just get erased, even in cover.
Heavy bolters are still super sketch. In the case of infantry, you still want mortars on heavy weapon teams or lascannons on infantry squads since the lethal hits don't apply to vehicles. When it comes to chimeras, they are now better than flamers. When it comes to armored sentinels, this puts plasma cannons over lascannons because their rerolls for wounds mean they are still over 50% to wound, but they now have more hits and so are more likely to damage. Scout sentinels still use lascannons since the strength difference is 2x the wounds against t10 tanks . For tanks though, I think plasma is still better. It gives double the non lethal hit wounds (5+ instead of 6+) and has better ap so it probably doubles the failed saves as well. The only vehicle that has the option of a melta and not a lascannon is the hellhound, and you want flamers for that anyway.

The rule specifies “After this model has shot.” So you have to resolve ALL the model’s shooting before the extra AP takes effect.
Wouldn’t this mean that a bolt/punisher can gun down another Russ?

Chimera + Heavy Weapons Team for Quad Bolters
I can never get into it.
If my chimera doesn't have a scouting unit in it it will always have a Primaris psyker.
Its profile is so strong in a firing deck. Bolters are fine but they excel at killing nothing.
If avaliable ill take a weapon that's really good at something over ok at everything.

The problem with HWT in Chimera is the BS 5+. I like the Ogryns inside instead even if that means losing a lot of range, but gaining shots up close.
