I would have to agree, that is the tree, you cannot dismiss the knot. The pine probably grew along with the other trees after 1967. Thanks again for the wonderful video!
Thanks so much. One of those weird ones (like the film) where there’s not too much to see. Hmm - I should have driven to Newquay in Cornwall and ended up at the hotel!
Well done as always! I think you said it best, the actual fun is seeing you standing where the event took place. Thanks for keeping the memories alive for us!
Regarding the tree in the background: we live on the boundary of forestry land, and since moving here in 1983 similar trees have been planted, grown to much taller than that one and have only recently been felled. My guess is that tree was planted well after the Strawberry Fields promotional film was shot. Lovely video as always 👍
Cheers! There is one picture (the black & white one I show) of the four lads posing with a drum and Martha the sheepdog. I think that fern tree is in the background.
As a child in the early 1970’s, my late father was a Warrant Officer in 665 Squadron Air Training Corps and would often go to RAF West Malling to fly in gliders. I used to go along, mostly to ride in the RAF Landrovers. On one visit I was wandering around some empty offices and came across a room painted with a very large Union Jack flag. At the time it meant very little to a 10 year old boy crazy for football… I remember quite clearly the anti blast walls too! I’ve always thought that the stump with the stump was the tree! Fun video! ❤
A couple of corrections there. The hanger was located under what is now Asda's car park, you are the wrong side of the Control Tower, which incidentally is grade two listed. The Costas is not and was not original, it was built on where a lean-to workshop had been located which was removed. I was also there over the filming weekend, when they came down the stairs in their white tails I was sitting over on their right. I have some photos only of the outside (i.e.cars and crew) as the powers that be would not let anyone take photos inside the hanger. I was born in West Malling and am aware of the history of the airdrome. The Baldock family were personal friends and I used to buy my Levi's in their shop on the corner .Your film was very enjoyable, thank you.
Thanks again for this very interesting video! You prevented from from visiting this site as I am planning to visit some major Beatles related locations. I hope you will continue with your Beatles tours. Always much appreciated
Don’t let me put you off. There are so many great locations. Sadly so far, the airfield is the least interesting for me but it was still good being there - even if it’s just houses now 🤣
Thanks for another great video Tudor. Really interesting to see all these locations. I live in the West country and have tried to see locations for The Magical Mystery Tour (Newquay, Plymouth, Widecombe etc) but lack your detective skills. Thanks again.
This is my absolute favorite video of yours Tudor! Oh, how I longed to stand in the spot where The Beatles sang I Am the Walrus! And walk down the steps of the airport hangar in West Malling but haven't made it to those spots yet! MMT is my favorite film and album of all time. When I was a kid, I had the album with the pictures on the inside and would stare and dream while listening to the album! I lived in Philly. Still stare at the album even today and I am 63 years old! Never grew up I'm afraid. So, thanks for the walk Tudor and maybe one day my dream will come true, you never know!
I’m glad you like it. As you say, maybe one day you’ll get to visit. I’ve found it fascinating seeking out all the locations and then being able to stand on those famous spots!
As MMT Revisited pointed out, you have to think of MMT in context of the Beatles' highly productive, beautiful year of 1967. First there was the "Strawberry Fields Forever"/ "Penny Lane" single, and then the year ended with MMT. One could say they were bookends of one body of work. I am amazed that not enough has been written about the "Strawberry Fields" filming. As a young lad, it just blew my mind. And it continues. As you know, the video was done by this Swedish director Peter Goldmann, but the work certainly did not get enough credit or study. The video kind of set the tone for the Beatles' psychedelic/studio experimentation period.

If you scout around on the web for enough location shots from the filming (beatlesdaily has a bunch of them), you will come across a black and white shot of the four Beatles standing verify stiffly by the tree (G-P-R-J) with the piano on their left and a long tree root (or roots) emanating from the stump that has partly emerged from the ground, behind them and to the right. The root is visible in the film, but the emerged bits are very clear in that photograph. I expect when the tree was cut down, the wayward root(s) would probably have been removed as a trip hazard, leaving behind said trench (still there when I visited last month). I also wonder if the knot in question was at the tree end of said root(s).

@@TudorSmith Your right looks better than The Beatle’s right in Black & White for sure! Not a masterpiece, but a better film than most gave it credit for! Watched it at Norman Greenbaum’s (Spirit In The Sky) Pub, that he opened in 72! He told me that he liked it a lot! This was a bootleg copy he got a hold of, so It didn’t look it’s best! But Norman packed the house for three nights in row! We were Beatle-Starved in America in those days!
It’s a strange thing indeed. I watched it (for the first time) the other day while researching the locations. Having stupidly read the reviews about how bad it was supposed to be I’d always steered clear of it. I was amazed how much I actually enjoyed it. I guess my love of the Beatles sees through the banality and boy, I love Viv Stanshall and Neil Inness!
In 1967 my husband lived in West Malling and he and his sister got to take part as extras for the Tug of War , Marathon ( On the Bus with Ringo) and in the Hangar for your Mother Should know. Today he owns one of the Buses that were used for the Liverpool MMT Tours and an extensive MMT Memobilia collection that is to be used to help gather donations for Save the Children and Children with Cancer.
Interesting. I was in Cornwall recently and stood on the spot where John stood at Huer’s Hut near the Atlantic Hotel Newquay. I even recreated the picture. It was between 12th and 15th September 1967…..well worth a visit. As for the tree….more doubt creeps in. The new one does fit perfectly when you overlayed the real tree pic……
Ha see, I said opinions were divided about the tree! I’m sticking with my first stump though. Hey isn’t it great being able to stand where they stood? It brings it all to life.
The tree to the left of the Penny Lane Tree (now a stump) appears to be rather young, and could easily have been planted and grown to its current size during the now more than half a century since The Beatles were there filming.
I know I'm just a silly old fool, but if the original West Malling airdrome was still there, I'd be there in a flash to immerse myself back to the Magical MysteryTour. I so wish it was.
@@TudorSmith I was born and brought up within RAF airdromes across the UK and overseas, so I get rather nostalgic and patriotic. Combine this with The Beatles, my fav band, and the fondness becomes overwhelming!
@@TudorSmith Much more than interesting, inspiring ! The reason Magical Mystery Tour is my "favourite" is really out of respect for Sir George Martin who would have wanted SFF & PL on Sgt. Pepper so it's on this GREAT underrated Beatles album along with the marvellous magnificent All You Need Is Love ! Thank you, Sir ! You should be knighted for no one has taken the time & effort for this fab fun undertaking !
@@TudorSmith Without George Martin The Beatles almost wouldn't have existed. The same goes for Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow or Wired. There are fascinating interviews on utube where he had the uncanny intuition & faith to produce them ! Martin is also a GREAT musician & a gentleman !
@@TudorSmith Why not ? Sir Tudor Smith ! Will have to write a song, STSmith then everyone will ask, " what's this, who is it who is it ? Just like Lennon's Steel & Glass though here on a positive note !
The ‘knoble’ or small stump in the original video Strawberry Fields is actually a fallen branch. So I don’t think it’s important though it does like the location. The evergreen tree may just be younger than 55years old which is quite possible.
I agree. On looking at the original SF footage, it can be seen as a fallen branch because the "McCartney" tree was already dead in the original video. This kind of confirms for me the stump number 2 (as per my previous video) was the actual tree! I could keep going back but I think viewers would get bored 😉
Tudor these videos go beyond fascinating . I love the detail and your presenting truly engaging. Have you investigated the Paperback writer/ Rain locations. Il check . Meantime just do more regardless how insignificant the locations as great way to spend 30 mins or so. Btw what do you record these on …looks and sounds great. I’m suspecting a DJI pocket 2..?
Cheers Iain. I’ve got a few more planned so stay tuned lol Yeah I film on a DJI Osmo Pocket (v1) and record my audio to a Zoom H1. Two separated stream files which I sync in the video editing software PowerDirector 👍
Thanks Tudor for a fun video. If you decide to go to Cornwall, you should treat yourself to a Cornish Pasty. Greetings from the Illinois Valley (turn left at Chicago).
@@TudorSmith A tour of Abbey Rd studios? The alps for some shots from Help? New York/Washington/Miami from the first US tour? Rishikesh? If the budget doesn’t stretch how about Chiswick House? My best to you.
Thanks for another interesting video. I'd go with James Watts's suggested stump. The tree to the left rear almost certainly planted since 1967. Although a Beatles fan since the 1960s, I've never seen MMT. Should I check it out? It's historically seen as one of their rare 'misses'.
I only saw it recently. Not owning the DVD I did a little Googling and found a Hungarian website that has the full video. I actually think for it’s time and of course social leanings of the 60s it’s a bit of a giggle. Don’t read to much into it for plot or storyline and just enjoy the ride. It’s like a home movie. And as silly as this might sound, if you’re a Beatles fan then you’ll feel enriched for watching it.
@@TudorSmith Watch the 4 1/2 hour version of MMT its better than the original TV Film. The long version shows a lot of the Outtakes taken but not all.Around 10 Hours of Original Filming was done for MMT
I think you might be right on that first stump I researched the video I found that the little root stump was actually a detached limb that must have fallen off the higher branches
Great vid! I always thought the train scene in Hard Days Night would have a huge amount of behind the scene info but I could not find any. I wrote to several people, was directed to IMDb for trains, steam museum heathfield train museum and so on. Maybe you could find more info?
James's stump location gets my vote.... Depending on focal length of the cine lens used in the original film, will allow, or not allow intruding trees also in the area....
I’ll always be divided in my choice but James’ tree (will I forever call it that?) is a pretty good contender especially, as you mention, if focal length and lenses are taken into consideration 👍
Hi - your videos are great. You have 2 or 3 videos about the "tree" online and only in this video we find out what the right tree is ( I am confident it is the stump with the small extra shown in this clip here - superimposed no doubt) but the headline does not mention it. Why dont you compile your journeys into one full clip with the final solution/tree at the end with the correct headline for all fans to enjoy?
Hi Tudor..How about finding the exact spot on Salisbury Plain where the Fabs filmed sequence in 'Help' playing 'the night before' as you can see Stonehenge in the background to enable lining up shots..I had a look for it myself nearly 40 years ago but stupidly didnt bring any shots from the film to aid me. I'd love to see you do that one..such a great song..really enjoying these videos you make!
Am I allowed on Salisbury plain? Isn’t it military? 🤣 I’ll see if I can find any info as I’m planning a part two on the MMT so it’d be worth driving passed that area 👍
@@TudorSmith well I was actually at the Stonehenge music festival at the time and that area wasnt part of the military range..however I maybe wrong and they may have got special permission to film there
Sad to see that the walls at the airport are gone. In summer of 1989 we visited it and we where allowed to drive up the airfield to the walls, where we shoot some photos. When was is demolished? They should have kept one wall
I'm not sure when the walls were demolished...probably as soon as they started developing the land. All in the name of progress. At least one wall remaining would have been a wonderful gesture to the past!
I was hoping you were gonna show this one part but it wasn’t in the movie I guess that’s probably why but the bridge that the bus got stuck on I thought would’ve been kind of interesting to see OK thanks👍

Some might say the right [correct] side lol! Thanks for watching and commenting...keeps the channel active. I ppreciate it.
Not that I know of. I know Google maps has a market but that might have been out there by anyone. I guess I’m going to have to contact McCartney or Starr and see if they remember 😊
I read somewhere that it was saved from the scrap yard, bought and restored then sold to the Hard Rock Cafe as part of their memorabilia collection. It’s somewhere in the USA (Las Vegas?)
The Bus was made in Luton U.K. by Bedford (Vauxhall)The " Artwork" is in fact Stickers that kept falling off or were also torn off by John during the tour. One reason why the bus arrived 2 hours late at Allsop Place at the begining of the Tour.Look closely at the Bus details during the film and you will notice the stickers are stuck on in different areas when they fell off.
Not a single one! If they did then they were pulled down for the housing estate! I did see a blog showing some concrete remains but I couldn’t find them 😊
I remember getting the Magical Mystery Tour VHS for Christmas in 87 I think. We watched it once and I never watched it again. The Beatles only failure (the TV show not the EP or LP which are fantastic) It really did just seem like a glorified home movie. If Mr Epstein had still been alive, I'm sure he would've been against it (whether he could've dissuaded Paul however, we'll never know). I have the bluray so I'll watch it again one day.

I guess my love of the Beatles sees through the banality and boy, I love Viv Stanshall and Neil Inness!
@@TudorSmith Yeah, I’d love to hear Ron Nasty’s version of Death Cab For Cutie!
🤣
Thanks for creating this video. I enjoyed it immensely. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a wonderful anecdote. It kind of completes the picture and brings us all a little closer to the story! Thanks for sharing.
Way out of the box. You simply are AWESOME!
Wow, thank you! It is a bit left-field isn't it, but I was hoping to get something out there that not too many others had done 👍
@@TudorSmith You certainly do things not too many others do. Please keep it up!
@@TudorSmith yes, it really does
Great video!
Thanks 🙏
Remind me I got a couple of cool Beatles stories from when I was cutting records at Abbey Road the other day. Keep forgetting to tell you them.
I can’t wait to hear them 👍
i think that is the tree stump looks right do like your beatles videos hope you do some more soon
Yep that's the tree. So, no more tree footage in any future Beatles videos :-)
I very much enjoyed this, sir! Thanks a lot.
Excellent news! I aim to please 😂 thanks for watching.
Very interesting stuff sir, thank you !
Thank you 🙏
The tree to the left of the Penny Lane Tree (now a stump) appears to be rather young, and could easily have been planted and grown to its current size during the now more than half a century since The Beatles were there filming.
Highly likely 👍
Wow this was great! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun filming it 👍
I know I'm just a silly old fool, but if the original West Malling airdrome was still there, I'd be there in a flash to immerse myself back to the Magical MysteryTour. I so wish it was.
Isn’t it a shame how things change over time. I suppose had the Aerodrome still existed then it would be possible to visit.
@@TudorSmith I was born and brought up within RAF airdromes across the UK and overseas, so I get rather nostalgic and patriotic. Combine this with The Beatles, my fav band, and the fondness becomes overwhelming!
Great video again, thank you so much as always, they really are informative, inspirational & endearing ! Cheers !
My pleasure. I'm glad you found it interesting.
George Martin certainly had a big part to play didn’t he? Sir Tudor Smith. I like the sounds of that lol 😂
A very enjoyable video, thank you.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Crazy to think that seemingly endless grass field in I Am The Walrus is now a neighborhood and is unrecognizable.
Nothing stays the same eh?
“Let’s all get up and walk on a tour about a bus that travelled through Devon and corn” 🎵 My apologies!! Great video as usual. Please don’t stop
Ha ha I see what you did there 👍
Why are not hundreds of Beatles fans converging on ALL these sites daily??
Maybe they are - they’re just not filming it like me 😂
The ‘knoble’ or small stump in the original video Strawberry Fields is actually a fallen branch.
@@TudorSmith I must go myself sometime and look at it and also find the shop where John bought the Mr Kite poster whilst filming.
That shop (estate agents?) now has a replica poster in the windows. It’s a nice touch 👍
I’ve got a few more planned so stay tuned lol
Yeah I film on a DJI Osmo Pocket (v1) and record my audio to a Zoom H1. Two separated stream files which I sync in the video editing software PowerDirector 👍
@@TudorSmith look forward to this. Il be staying tuned for sure. Ps love the DJI pockets I’ve got 1&2.
Thanks Tudor for a fun video. If you decide to go to Cornwall, you should treat yourself to a Cornish Pasty. Greetings from the Illinois Valley (turn left at Chicago).
Thanks! See my follow up MMT video - I do indeed end up in Cornwall!
Great stuff, Tudor. More please 🙏
Thanks Matt. I’ll see what I can come up with! 🤣
@@TudorSmith A tour of Abbey Rd studios? The alps for some shots from Help? New York/Washington/Miami from the first US tour? Rishikesh? If the budget doesn’t stretch how about Chiswick House? My best to you.
You're filling me with all sorts of ideas and ambitions :-)
Wonderful ..married to our Beatles 🐞 🐞 🐞 🐞 🍏💙💖
Very Great Job !!!!
Thank you 🙏
I think you might be right on that first stump I researched the video I found that the little root stump was actually a detached limb that must have fallen off the higher branches
I meant to say re watched
Ah yes that stump. I’d always thought it was a fallen branch. You see it too?
I also saw it in some behind the scenes pictures as well which convinced me that your original stump is the tree
Fab...I went there about 15 years ago trying to find evidence of the anti-blast thingys...but no!!
That’s progress eh? If they had left them up they’d probably be full of graffiti 🙃
Great vid! I always thought the train scene in Hard Days Night would have a huge amount of behind the scene info but I could not find any. I wrote to several people, was directed to IMDb for trains, steam museum heathfield train museum and so on. Maybe you could find more info?
That could be worth digging about and trying to make some discoveries. Food for thought eh?
James's stump location gets my vote.... Depending on focal length of the cine lens used in the original film, will allow, or not allow intruding trees also in the area....
I’ll always be divided in my choice but James’ tree (will I forever call it that?) is a pretty good contender especially, as you mention, if focal length and lenses are taken into consideration 👍
Great video! Just discovered your channel.
Thanks. I hope you find some of my other videos interesting 👍
As a huge Beatles fan I don't think I'll get bored on your channel anytime soon. I have subscribed.@@TudorSmith
Could be a good idea 👍
@@TudorSmith well I was actually at the Stonehenge music festival at the time and that area wasnt part of the military range..however I maybe wrong and they may have got special permission to film there
THAT TREE STUMP DESERVES A PLAQUE MARKING THE SITE OF STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER
We could start a petition 👍
Thanks Tudor!!!
You’ll see the bus location in my second video 👍
I was going to stay in west malling a few days in September, like Beatles stuff and wanted to go to the hanger, never got there
Sadly not too much to see anymore. But still worth a walk around if you ever get back 👍
@@TudorSmith yes,a bit too far travel at the time, but I was am intending to see locations,I'm from merseyside so not hard to connect Beatles music and history,it was all big in sixties mersey beat, not just beatles
Yes it's a bit of a trek down south (I know as I live down here and getting up to Liverpool requires some planning). Still, you've got all the 60s musical heritage on your footsteps. 🎸👍
@@TudorSmith travelling out ov west malling is awkward, grid locked,m25,m1, I did get as far as Crawley down,I was visiting pilsdon west malling,it's strange I seen you you tube video, makes up for it😃

Is it a mouse?
The traffic in these little English towns is nuts. If it was the States they would level all the buildings and widen the roads(regardless of their history or age).
Yeah sadly our infrastructure has not faired too well for the growth in vehicle ownership
Thanks Tudor for another great Beatles video, where was the scene filmed where John was shovelling spaghetti ?
Thanks Peter. I suspect the restaurant scene was just a studio, as was the stripper scene.
@@TudorSmith I believe the stripper scene was filmed at Raymonds Revue bar in Soho (Rupert Street) - if the information we find on the internet is reliable.
@@TudorSmith The stripper scene was Paul Raymonds Review Bar in Soho…..( how did I know that? 🤔)
You probably just read that somewhere :)
Drat - I should have visited it during my London walkabouts ;-)
A lot of debate for a dead tree .I own a little forest lot with also dead tree ....nobody care about them .... But it's true none of the Beatles climb on mine maybe it,s the reason why ?
Talking tree this third option look really the one !!!
I really enjoy your video P.S. As a non british i always freak to see someone driving his car on the passenger side !!
Marc from quebec Canada
No one I think is in your tree Marc :-) I do really like the look of that third tree actually. The more I look at it it just makes sense to me.
In England, our steering wheel is on the right side. Some might say the right [correct] side lol!
Thanks for watching and commenting...keeps the channel active. I ppreciate it.
What's meant by anti-blast? Stopping the blast from the jet engines?
I’m not sure myself. I can’t decide if it’s blast from jets or if it’s possibly blast protection from attacking missiles!
Walrus is my favourite
hi Mr. smith, do you know about MMT MAGIC BUS? NEVER SEE ABOUT THIS. SORRY MY ENGLISH.FROM SOUTH BRASIL. MY REGARDS.
O Hard Rock Cafe adquiriu o ônibus em 1988, e o veículo está totalmente reformado.
Did they put some kind of marker where the tree was yet?
Not that I know of. I know Google maps has a market but that might have been out there by anyone. I guess I’m going to have to contact McCartney or Starr and see if they remember 😊
any idea on the original Mystery Tour bus, where was it made, who painted the art work, where is it now ?
More interesting details here: ruclips.net/video/ymmcyH2Zscw/видео.html
Ah the great Victor Spinetti. "Algernon - the laser!" :-)
I reckon a quick watch of that video will reveal some of the remaining locations!
Paul is alive wouldn’t he know which is the tree he levitated up into on the strawberry fields video 🥰🍏❤️😎
Ah that’s where he went 🤣
No blast wall foundations survived ?
Not a single one! If they did then they were pulled down for the housing estate! I did see a blog showing some concrete remains but I couldn’t find them 😊
👍.
🙏
I remember getting the Magical Mystery Tour VHS for Christmas in 87 I think. We watched it once and I never watched it again. The Beatles only failure (the TV show not the EP or LP which are fantastic) It really did just seem like a glorified home movie. If Mr Epstein had still been alive, I'm sure he would've been against it (whether he could've dissuaded Paul however, we'll never know). I have the bluray so I'll watch it again one day.
If you watch it with an open mind (dare I say, Monty Python) then it’s worthy of another viewing. Silly but enjoyable.
@@TudorSmith I think The Goodies were also inspired by this kind of tomfoolery. They were very popular in Australia when I was a kid (late 70s early 80s) Goodie, Goodie, yum yum.
