Movies from the 80's and 90's were made with some kind of magic that will never be captured again.
Absolutely
They used film.
Right on! Proper movies with real actors and proper stunts, none of this modern "cgi" crap...
Yep. And the yellow-orange filter. funny how we really don't notice that until compared with real life. The Matrix had a green filter all the way through.
yeah .. everything is done on Green screen and all CGI ..
I think the fact that this film is pretty much shot entirely on-location is remarkable. Even up to using the actual buildings' interiors that are right there. No movie magic junk for the most part, shot directly on-location throughout LA like a long stroll. Makes it realistic and gives me vibes of old 1940s-50s era Italian neorealist cinema. This is an excellent video, man. Thanks so much for it.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Surprising how man of the buildings have been torn down or completely altered in the last 30 years. LA was so cool to me as a kid growing up in rural England, I finally visited for the first time in 2022 and whilst I still loved it, I was surprised at how many issues (homelessness especially) there are
Three things as someone born, raised, and currently residing in Los Angeles.
1) It's always changing here. The population is transitory with new people always coming and going. Old buildings and homes are torn down and newer ones are built in their place.
2) The Los Angeles of the 1980s and early 90s (when this movie was made)was so much worse than it is today. Things were run down. Smog was awful. Crime was off the charts. Parts of 'Falling Down' were filmed in areas no sane person would set foot;gang ridden, crime infested, shitholes. Now those same neighborhoods are completely transformed.
3) Don't think of those people as homeless. What the majority of them actually are is drug tourists. They migrate to Los Angeles because drugs are decriminalized here. Drugs are easily available, very high quality, and dirt cheap compared to most of the country. Throw in perfect weather and now it's a Mecca for every loser that wants to waste their life sticking a needle in their arm.
@@mjwbulich thanks dude. I've watched a few of these film location videos now and in every one of them around 50% of the buildings have been torn down. And yep, it was pretty evident that those guys in the tent areas were on something
I've gotta be honest bro, that opening scene when he's stuck in the traffic jam is pretty much how I feel every day. I've reached my breaking point...!
I feel ya’
Anyone tryna have a group trip to Venice?
I HEAR YOU! Every day I am defending myself (PHYSICALLY) from road ragers, people riding my ass inches away and just moronic people who apparently learned to drive playing Mario Kart. I've stooped to buy a vinyl decal for my back window with Yosemite Sam that says BACK OFF but it does no good....
@@gobshite5150 reading you loud and clear brother!!!
Go back to Sweden then
One of my favorite of all time movies! It was one of my Dad's favorite as well. My Dad recorded this onto VHS from HBO or Showtime when I was a kid. It was one of the first movies I brought into DVD. I like the way you filmed and edited this! Thanks a bunch! I subscribed and liked for sure!
Thank you so much for this! I was in LA when this movie was filmed and it has always been one of the films I watch over and over.
Absolulty love this! you did a great job locating the right areas. One of my favourite films, I even did a thesis on the opening scene as part of my college application
Thank you. That's rad!
Thank you for going to so much trouble for these location shots! Great job 👍👍
My pleasure. Thank you
Still have a dvd copy of the movie... Thanx for your work really enjoy watching your vids. Some spots looked a lot more charming in the 80/90s
Another great episode & another one of my all time favourite movies
Hey hey! One of my favorite movies. Thanks for all of your hard work on these videos. I lived in San Fernando until I was 11 years old. I remember a lot of things about the valley. You always do a great job of bringing back good old memories. Thanks again. Looking forward to more.
Thank you so much
I miss the 90s. Thanks for that video.
D-Fens sure did a lot of ubering around in this movie...
I always found it hilarious that he basically risked his life to _not_ give the briefcase to the gangsters, but ends up giving it to the homeless guy because he was irritating him, lol. And the fact that nothing was in it but his lunch makes you realize how crazy D-FENS really is. Great movie! Awesome filming locations video!
Do you not consider that the briefcase actually represents D-FENS? Outwardly giving an impression of purpose and respectability.... but inwardly it has, through no fault of its own, been stripped of its former usefulness and is now an empty hollow shell bereft of meaning.
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you
I was blown away when I first watched this movie, so awesome, a Michael Douglas masterpiece.
Great job finding these spots!
I opened up a sealed copy of this movie to watch it on VHS a few years ago. It still had the price tag on it. I think it was $20 or 30 dollars.
And now you can buy the dvd from thrift stores for only $1 🤔
I used to buy new VHS when first available for rent. Cost was 99 bucks. You had to wait 12 months to get it for 30 dollars.
Some new movies are that much today on Blu Ray disc.
Not cheap but you build a library that can't be, removed/deleted/edited.

I just watched Falling Down today, and I have to say its now one of my favorite movies. Cool to see the Restaurant is still there.
Awesome!
This is such a great channel! Thanks a lot man.
Thoroughly enjoyed, subscribed.👍
Great movie.... great video.... thanks mate! 👍🙂❤
Awesome video, man! “Falling Down” is one of my favorite movies. As others have said in their comments, it’s a shame that Hollywood doesn’t make movies like this anymore. Now everything is CGI for the most part.
i just noticed Bobs market is also used in Fast n furious, hence the burnouts out front. Thanks for pulling this together its great! AU
Thumbs up from Brazil! One of the best US films I watched.
Man I love your videos.
Thank you!
Your location videos are so on point, excellent job on finding those locations and matching them up.
Thank you so much
LOVE the videos man.. its wild to see the locations today that were part of such iconic movies
Thank you
Great job with locations. MAN this definitely reminds why I left SoCal and the crappy traffic. Downtown was always hell.
Thank you
Fun fact: 4:29 Bob's Market is also "Toretto's Market and Cafe" from The Fast and The Furious.
Love this movie haven't watched it in a while. I think its time again Thanks for taking the time to do this one
My pleasure. And yes you should.. it should be watched on a regular basis.
Really great work.. It's fantastic to see the changes and i just love this movie :- )
Thank you so much
Sweet! love that film.
You ROCK KURT!!
Excelent investigation work 👏👏👏thanks for sharing
Nicely done! This one must have been a challenge because so much has changed.
Very cool. Thanks i rode by that old house in venice know it well.
Wow, thanks for this awesome video buddy. I've seen this movie more than 20 times as a kid. It's great to see this kind of interesting locations. Anyway greetings from Hungary.
Thanks and always great work...
Thank you
Underrated movie 💯 thx for the upload... I wish you could do BLACK RAIN, but it's filmed in Japan.
one of the best movies
Love your channel! 🔥🙌🤘🏽

one of the best dramas \m/
Great vid thanks! However..... times are a changing and to be honest it was extremly difficult to think the locations as in the movie :)
7:32 I believe the same building with the mural was used in Colors (1988). Another Duvall movie.
My goodness how long does it take to make this amazing video?
Big ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for watching
Now that I'm in my 40's I completely understand D-fens now.
Yep
im 'sure you know this but that bobs market is also used in the first "THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS". and down the st is torreto's house!
How many times have you heard “you sound like Norm Macdonald” ?
Never.. before I started making videos. Now... a handful of times. I don't hear it. Haha
@@80sLife strange as Norm is Canadian
The interiors of Mr. Lee's store were used in Fast and Furious 2001 interior as well as exterior.
Bob’s Market is also in The Fast and the Furious
I worked with a guy who casually mentioned one day how this was his favorite movie. 😱
L.A. in 1992. Simply Magical.
Awesome sauce!
I have a fun piece of added trivia. The parking lot @12:48 was originally the site of the famous Garden Of Allah Hotel where many stars and authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald lived and/or partied in the 30s and 40s. It was torn down in 1959 and replaced with a bank and a strip mall. And this is the "parking lot" that Joni Mitchell refers to in Big Yellow Taxi ("They paved paradise, put up a parking lot.") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_of_Allah_Hotel Also, across the street, the building that "used to be Virgin Megastore," was, before that, the location of the famous Schwabb's Pharmacy, where several Golder Era movie stars claimed to have been discovered.
Time......quickly passes bye......
MacArthur Park! Lived there for a year during the financial crisis of 07. Had a decent single apt for $750 /month. Now i bet it’s gentrified and my old place is double that amount
You're probably right. And the funny thing is, I think it's more sketchy now than in 07
@@80sLife I bet. It's so close to skid row ,and the red line station there makes it conducive to drug deals and crime
I'm hearing a bit of Norm Macdonald in your voice and that's a good thing
Do you have a video of the follow up of the peer you were talking about?
Have you filmed the follow up of the Venice beach pier ?
15:21 is the same kid who called Tre an _"African bootie-scratcher"_ in Boyz 'N' The Hood.
Hey look at that. Good eye
10:35 to the left of the poster you can see the "no service" and "right to refuse service" signs- i think they're the same as the ones in the surplus store. no big deal but interesting connection. maybe not 😊
They were also filming during the riots. I forget which scene it was, but they said at one point of the filming they were about 2 blocks away and LAPD were advising them to evacuate
I would give anything to go back to 93
In your video 11:06sec you can see the house where Beverly Hills 90210 season 1 Episode 13 was also filmed haha regards
When I was there in October 2021 the pier was open.
Homeless guy in park in a 80s movie and still in 2021 👍
Bob's food market is the Toreto store in Fast and Furious.
The video you did on Scarface locations was my first exposure to you.
This is the second...I subscribed by the 7:00 mark.
Keep it up, man! These are fantastic! 👍
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it
I remember this so well.. I moved to El Monte from DC in 93 and I had a freelance job near Macarthur Park near 6th and Alvarado and had no idea where I was. I was setting up a PA system for a city councilman on a block off 6th to speak and all I saw were Mexicans.. didn't realize the ones that approached me were gang members. One approached me and asked was I the DJ, no Dj and told him why I was there. At that instance a LAPD squad car pulled up and the officer yelled my name! It was a frat brother from my college who was completely shocked seeing me. He called me over frantic and said.. "WTF are you doing here? Those gang members are plotting to get you soon as this is over and GTF outta here"! "This is the Rampart division"! I said wait for me LOL He then got a call on his radio and had to leave. Luckily it ended well and I wasn't harmed... Whew!!
Is that the same street they filmed colors ?
Yes
Neat
John fleck was the bum banging for money for me it was the funniest part in this movie John he's a great actor either he played in star trek tv show to
Odd question. Why does every movie that takes place in Los Angeles during the 80s and 90s have this kind of pinkish hue to it? Is that how it looked or was that a trend back then in movies? L.A story has it, Falling down has it, Point Break has it, Speed has it, Predator 2 has it, Colors has it, Boyz n the hood has it.....
Probably a bit of both. The smog may have played a roll
Has the pier opened back up yet?
Edgeware Road looks kind of nice.
Why was I thinking this was in New York as a kid ??? 9 to 5 too…
Golf course scene at pacific palms, do you know they film rodney dangerfields back to school movie it was the diving competition scene…
Looks like they fixed the streets!
He deserved an Oscar for his performance in this movie.
Agreed
Definitely
Yes! In a world where Oscars are given for quality performances.
@@KutWrite I'm in the UK so don't hear much about him in our press over here nowadays, do you know if he's spoken out against this Great Reset that's being pushed on us citizens around the world? There seems to be very few, Arnold Schwarzenegger for example told us to stuff our freedom recently, he's obviously on board with it then
Oh yeah
Thank YOU for a great video!!!
As an LA native, this movie captures the atmosphere of the city in such an accurate yet surreal/ visceral way... It's difficult to describe and almost uncanny to watch. Great video breaking these locations down!
Thank you
Are there still nagging assholes walking around asking for money while coming up with a miriad of easily disproved stories about how they are not employed ? As a Ukranian I found that scene to be insanely funny. The guy is so see-through, so hard to believe such morons actually exist. Sure, we've got bums of our own over here, but not one of them is, I think, drugged-up enough to actually believe anyone will believe their bull.
@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 Oh it's way worse now Lol Homeless are rampant in LA + all of Cali's major cities. I mean, they won't always give you a sob story like the dude in the movie, but they'll definitely ask you for cash
@@dante340 Jeez, so that one South Park episode wasn't even a joke, huh ? :o
@@dante340 yeah you can see the tents everywhere in this video
Falling Down was decades ahead of it's time. Fits in perfectly to today's crazed world.
Hands down best filming location narrations. The attention to nuance around architecture, paintings, and other item placement, along with the camera angles is superb.
Wow, thank you so much!!!
Totally agree, fantastic work.
The older I get, the more I can relate, to the character of D-Fense
"I'm the bad guy?"
D-FENS
Very true
I can't picture anyone else other than Michael Douglas in this movie. One of my favorite movies
His best performance.
He did a great job in this movie. But l also can see Clint Eastwood or the Sheen men doing this as well!
It's Michael Douglas's favourite movie and role too.
Watched it only recently. Excellent movie
robin williams could have pulled this role off. think: 1 hour photo
And for those who don't know, "Sheila" from Whammy Burger is Michelle Pfeiffer's younger sister!
That's Miss. Folson to you!! Lol..
i know she was in vamp. and also worked with me at the hollywood tropicana. she was a waitress.
Yep. her name is Deedee.
Kinda looks like the Mad About You lady
Man the locations look so sterile and soulless now. Can't believe the early 90s looks so nostalgic now. I remember thinking how boring it was becoming compared to the 80s but it really wasn't bad at all!!
I'm afraid that's just "movie magic" whatsoever. Any filming location I visited in person felt sterile and soulless, even if they were filmed a few years prior to that.
@@Retfie719 Some of it might be movie magic, but they removed the playground at the park for crying out loud. Things have changed, for the worse in a lot of ways.
Early 90s LA is definitely not something you should be "nostalgia" for. lol
@@agoo7581 mainly the cars.
@@Bigtymer781 They still have homeless junkies walking about so there's that.
I ate at that El Pollo Locco in Hollywood so many times.
You are lucky.
Fun fact: In spanish "El Pollo Locco" translates to "El Pollo Crazy"
@@niles6159 I guess that’s all we get for free, huh?
Shame most of the filming locations for this one have been so mutated and rearranged over time that they're barely recognizable now. A lot of the Terminator ones were more or less in tact. Two of my favorite films.
At least the Whammy Burger has held up.
...but is it possible now to get some late breakfast?
What, mostlooks the same .
The hamburger stand I ate at about 20 years ago and the food was good. That freeway near the end is the 105, it wasn't complete yet but some movies and music videos were filmed on it while during construction. Lethal Weapon 2, Speed, and a Billy Idol video can't remember the name...
Yeah it’s called Angelos Burgers...I found a damn fly in my soda once and never went back lol
