Mr. Bennet. The Witty, Flawed Patriarch Of Pride And Prejudice
Join me as I delve into the life, wit, and failings of Mr. Bennet, the unforgettable patriarch of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. In this video, I’ll explore his complex relationship with Mrs. Bennet, his sharp humour, and his parenting mistakes. Using scenes from the iconic 1995 BBC adaptation, I’ll try to uncover why Mr. Bennet is both a source of amusement and a figure of quiet regret. What do others think of him, and how does his bond with Elizabeth reveal his true character? Watch to discover the charm and contradictions of one of Austen’s most human creations.

    I found the differences between 1995 and 2005 fascinating - I remember watching the 2005 in the theatre with my sister-in-law and whispered to her in astonishment “are the Bennets actually greasy?? And is everything in Longborne house a shambles??”. I guess my 1995 favouritism was surfacing. 2005 version had a touch of gritty Regency reality, maybe. I like Mr. Bennet but his neglect in guiding Lydia combined with Mrs. Bennet’s overindulgence of Lydia resulted in some kind of emotional regulation disorder in her.

    Concerning the scowling of Lizzie when Darcy and Bingley came to call near the end - i thought she was worried because her mom was being so rude to Darcy that she was watching his reaction mortified and worried.

    Ghandi was such an awful 'boy' (men don't act like he did) - when his wife got sick, he refused to 'allow her' to take the medicine and she died a miserable death at a young age. Of course, when HE got it - he beat feet to the quinine. Hypocrite, misogynist - a**hole.

    Love your videos. Another small "tick" is when Lizzy is returning to the Inn where she is staying, the maid calls to her from the upstairs window saying that Mr. Darcy is waiting for her, and the TINY beginning of a smile at the corner of her mouth when she hears he is there. It's almost imperceptible. Another is the way Darcy's look is so intense at Lizzy while she climbs into the carriage as she and her aunt and uncle are leaving Pemberle. Then, as they drive away, she turns to look back at Darcy standing with one leg bent staring at her as they leave. Those intense looks are priceless. Another great tiny moment is the little "giggle" Charlotte emits when Lizzy relates to her the comment she overheard Darcy making about her. LOVE all those scenes. So well done.

    Excellent analysis. I especially like that while he can’t help but be a little sharp with Mary, at the expense of decorum, he isn’t unkind to any of the family. There are certainly models for unkind family men in Austen- John Dashwood springs to mind, and Mr Bennet stands at some risk of being the irresponsible cause of his family’s ruin as Henry Dashwood was leaving their fate in the hands of those who do not really care about them (though you’d hope Charlotte would soften Mr Collins as much as she could on that score). He thinks rationally, so while he is embarrassed by the silly younger girls, he doesn’t see real danger (too poor to be the object of a fortune hunter). So where did he go wrong? He didn’t take the agency he could have, Mr Gardiner and Mr Darcy rescue him. But he does seem bewildered by how he went wrong and so is the reader - ultimately, why did Wickham act as he did? Because even if he ruined a gentleman’s daughter in Hertfordshire would he really suffer for it? Without Darcy, would he have really suffered at all from the scandal? I’m not sure. But I think Mr Bennet is still bewildered by how he went wrong in his rational calculation, surprised Lizzie had better calculation - because to her the stakes were directly much higher- and he is grateful and relatively graceful in accepting the help of his superiors (Mr Darcy and in business accumen even Mr Gardiner). I’d like to think that Mary and Kitty end up married to attorneys like Mr Gardiner who perhaps do marry for looks but who also take care of their family and form respected bonds with Bingley and Darcy as Mr Bennet did with Mr Gardiner.

    Tutor in the scene where Darcy and bingley visit longbourne and you are wondering about Elizabeth scowling, the only thing I can think of is from the book. But it's in the chapter where she and Darcy write letters to their aunts. Recall that Lizzie asks Darcy why he was so reticent and he says something to the effect that he didn't see any encouragement from her. If I I am matching the same scenes from the book and the miniseries, it seems that the miniseries mistakenly edited out something to explain the scowling. What do you think think?

    • @TudorSmith
      @TudorSmith 4 дня назад

      I think that’s highly likely. The 1995 adaptation was quite close to the book although it did leave certain things out.

    In the scene where Darcy asks if he can introduce his sister to Lizzie if you watch Lizzie's eyebrows when she turns away after agreeing to meet Georgianna you will see she still is not getting the fact that he likes her tremendously. She is still in that mode like when Charlotte told her that Darcy looks at her a lot and she can't believe it.

    I just love this video about Mr. Bennett. I am watching it right now and haven't completed it just yet, but I wanted to mention something: SIDE NOTE: I am watching P&P again and, this time, I am paying closer attention to the husband of Louise, sister of Caroline Bingley. I have been watching him when he is in scenes where he is just in the back ground or just sitting slayed out drunk on a beautiful piece of furniture somewhere while everyone ignores him and goes on with their evenings in music and conversation. It is quite hilarious and interesting. I was thinking about the actor that played this part. All he had to do was to lie around and fitfully wake up from time to time saying that something was a total waste of time or pounding on his glass for more wine.

      Yes Mr Hurst is quite interesting to watch. He gets a few lines too when he’s playing cards just before Caroline invites Elizabeth to take a turn around the room. We also see him dancing with Louisa at the first gathering in Meryton!

    Wondering if Lady Catherine, in addition to saying Mr Collins should marry (which we know) could have actually suggested a cousin marriage to one of the Bennett girls (as she was preparing for her daughter and Mr D'Arcy). Merry Xmas btw.

      Yes I think that abandoning Lydia would have been the most likely outcome. I think the general idea from the people who have commented was that Wickham was not intending to elope with her. Jane Austen was such an astute observer of human psychology. Collins is portrayed as an overt narcissist, right down to the narcissistic abuse that appears when he becomes angry when he realizes he was late for dinner at Rosings (although Charlotte was the one who remembered). That is his true character and the rest is a facade. He is unable to show love to others. Behind the scenes he is most likely angry and vindictive. Charlotte only required a comfortable home and she can cohabitate with Collins because he is never around.

    • @TudorSmith

    Dear Tudor, your analyzes are a wonderful enrichment and mostly confirm my first, then gradually refined perceptions (with a certain addictive behavior (i. e. escape from reality ...) and a great - hopeless - infatuation with an unfortunately fictitious man (and that 200 years ago ☹)) of the late discovered great film adaptation and acting by P&P 1995. For the first time in my not very short life, I really understood what a great screenplay is so close to literature. It's also wonderful to see so many, many acting details also in the middle ground and background, which reflect the literature and characters very precisely. The film adaptation also led me to work through a book in English for the first time in my life (in the meantime also Emma and Persuasion) and thus also improve my poor English). So praise and thanks in advance for your fine eye and humor and your great enjoyment of the film adaptation, and also thanks for great community comments! Today, however, I have an addition for the first time when it comes to Collins: I am missing the aspect of the non-existent priesthood or spirituality and in particular the express lack of Christianity and what we want to expect from a pastor. Of course it's included indirectly, that's for sure. But maybe you could still include, on the one hand, for example Collin's lack of interest in the church community in deliciously servile worshiping the condescending lady de Bourgh. That his only 'religious' statement concerns the justification of dancing. Or his complete oversight of Mary and lack of interest in her particular moralizing understanding. Mary is trying to reach out to someone who is supposedly like-minded. And on the other hand, what is of course striking is his unspeakable appearance in front of the three sisters (tender Kitty has skilfully escaped) at Lizzy's brilliant answer, in which Collins wishes Lydia death rather than his contempt and satisfaction. Of course he is used in his delicious role - you name it too ans call it even the crucial role - as a representative of his time and probably priesthood, but Jane Austen also expresses other possibilities than condemnation in this time of hers. Interesting also the further type of pride, thanks also for this thought. I expressed this very seriously. I am sure you can portray this ‚Christianity‘ in a more playful way than I can 😊! For Collins, real spirituality and yes, true character, ould have been a path to importance. But then he wouldn't have become Jane Austen's protagonist and we wouldn't have fun. Warm greetings from Germany, and keep it up! Maybe not so quickly one after the other 😉?

    • @TudorSmith
      @TudorSmith 9 дней назад

      Thanks for your wonderful observations. I’ve often wondered if a job in the “clergy” back in the 1800s was just that. Just a job, and perhaps didn’t reflect someone’s Christian beliefs. Who knows. I’m in the middle of my next video so it won’t be too long for a new release 👍

    • @OkraK-f6z
      @OkraK-f6z 6 дней назад

      @@TudorSmith Dear Tudor, Thanks for answering! I don't know how exactly it was in England and how the lower clergy were recruited and trained and promoted in class at that time. Maybe I'm assuming too much of today's role expectations for the pastor. We would have to contact a historian. But there were certainly also representatives of spiritual values with social trust status. Jane Austen offers two serious counterparts to the caricatured Mr. Collins: Edward Ferrars in S & S and Edmund Bertram in Mansfield Park. They choose the spiritual profession, although they do not necessarily have to - although they are younger brothers and therefore not the heirs. Jane Austen gives the image that they don‘t do this for reasons of class and prestige, but because they are attracted to it. And, okay, because country life in a parish is more tranquil than in superficial urban society. Merry Christmas!

Elizabeth was like Jane Austen plus everything she wished she was, and got what Jane wished she had but most certainly could never hope for. Mary, on the other hand, was Jane putting her real self into the book, and poking a bit of fun at herself as a sort of inside joke between her and the novel. Mary gets literally nothing in the book, not even Mr. Collins, so perhaps this is Jane Austen depicting her reality, as she never married.

      Yes I’m pretty sure Jane Austen would have included some of her own traits into her characters.

    Well, every family has a spinster or two. Most of my father’s sisters are spinsters.

    I don't see Lizzy scowling at Darcy. I see her lookng anxious and uncomfortable. Understandable.

    I had to come back to you, because thanks to your enthralling videos, we've always discussed the characters in Pride and Prejudice, but in the 1995 TV version we not only get all the necessary detail, we have the most perfect cast, and Wickham is another stunning example. He needed to be very attractive, so that even intelligent Lizzie is interested, until she learns the truth, but also with more than a hint of the louche, which develops. And Adrian Lukis is so good in the role. Quite by chance, I saw an episode of "New Tricks" on television, which had been made twenty years after "Pride and Prejudice", and thought I recognised a wonderfully good looking actor with a cynical manner - it was him. I just had to comment, because yet again the acting of the role is perfection.

      Wickham: the character we love to hate, and the casting director got it right because Adrian Lukis delivers a believable Wickham 👍

    If i remember Benjamin Whitrow got a bafta nomination for best supporting actor for his portrayal as Mr Bennet in P&P95. Again really interesting and informative Tudor. Thanks for putting these out. I am much obliged to you Sir.

    Hi Tudor! I really enjoyed this analysis of the definitely devious and manipulative Mr Wickham. I always wondered whether he used his knowledge of growing up with Mr Darcey and used it to his advantage. Mr Darcey was a gentle, reserved and introvert individual , he understood his reserved nature and found the flaw that he could spin a web of lies, and know that Mr Darcey would have never had confided in anyone about his wicked actions towards Miss Darcey. However he underestimated Mr Darcey, and did not expect him to confide in anyone, above all Elizabeth, I believe the one who Wickham tried to deceive the most.

    I read somewhere that out of all her characters Jane Austen was most like Mr Bennet in real life.

    I love your insights! I think Elizabeth looking at Darcy at the end is explained in the book: he's ignoring her as he doesn't know how she feels and she is surprised/anxious about it and wants to catch his eye. Also, her reaction when he asks to meet his sister seems like total embarrassment to me. But again, people assumed Georgiana was proud when she was just shy so the two can be mistaken for each other. One tiny thing I've noticed in my 20+ rewatches of the series is just a small goof: in episode 1, when Lizzy is staying at Netherfield with Jane, there's a scene where she enters the breakfast room and the actress seems to jump a little when Bingley speaks to her. He's tucked behind a door so maybe she genuinely got surprised. I've always wanted someone to notice this too 😆
