Even though Pride and Prejudice was made in 1995, I do feel travel agents are missing out by not offering tours to these sets.

Sudbury Hall NT Derbyshire is now a museum for children since 2020.
they did do tours I believe after the movie came out. but it's been a while now.

I agree that it's such a shame that Sudbury Hall has been "modernised". The whole point of the National Trust is to hold important buildings in trust for the nation, to preserve them , their history and heritage. Why anyone feels the need to add disco lights and computer terminals everywhere is beyond me. When we visit places like this, we want to step back in time, we want to experience latter days and soak up the ambience. We do not want, or need, interactive, multimedia, touch screen kiosks and the like. We want, and need, to unplug and tune in to simpler times, old fashioned values and interact with these buildings as our predecessors did.
I agree with you. That’s why we pay out entrance fee, or annual subscriptions. I almost feel NT should put out “poll” and ask the public. I suppose a strongly worded letter wouldn’t do much good either 🤷🏻♂️
I actually felt a painful jolt when I saw what they've done to Sudbury...disco balls, computers, all the "trendy" garbage they've shoved in there. It's awful. I thought your National Trust was in place to preserve and protect these beautiful historic places...it's a hurtful thing to see. I share your sadness...our beautiful "Pemberley" should have been left alone in its grace. 😢
I couldn't agree more with you. When I visit historic places I wish to step back in time, not be assaulted with modernism and museum explanations. Years ago I was an 18th century living historian and would have the pleasure from time to time of entering the colonial homes and forts in the United States and living between the walls as if it were the past. When the museum trappings are removed and all that's left is the house or fort itself, it's quite an experience. To awaken and hear nothing but the stirrings of a fire being stoked or a cook pot being checked, to feel the lack of central heating is to, for a moment, appreciate the past. I would sometimes resent the intrusion of the public as they stomped their way through our encampments, picking their way through our things, and even disturbing our children as if we were all part of a hands-on exhibit.
What places like Sudbury should offer is a chance to explore the property in historic dress and without the modern appliances and signage. Imagine that! You pay a handsome fee, but you and everyone else gets to dress up, gets a quick instruction on the etiquette of the day, and get to tour the property as if they were Lizzy! No modern tourists being loud and rude. No modern tour guides with modern cheerfulness and sloppy clothes. Everything as it should be in the Regency Era.
I am so happy to see that there are others who value this version of Pride and Prejudice as I do. I loved this video and another that you did. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's subjective of course. I've had comments saying that the 2005 version is better. Perhaps its an age/generation thing? But I like the 1995 version 👍
I used to like the 2005 version better until I read the book again. The 1995 version is the real Pride and Prejudice, 2005 is an adaptation. 1995 does an excellent job following the book and phrases right from the book. My favorite is the audio book by Karen Savage. The letter from Darcy and her reaction to it is the best. I listen to Jane Austin books almost every night to fall asleep and often listen to 1995 and 2005 Pride and Prejudice. I may be a little obsessed 😅
I suppose the reason the 1995 version is split over 6 episodes so that that they could cover the whole content without abridging it?

They used to. I took a tour about 10 years ago and we went to all these locations. We even had a meal and danced inside Longbourn.

Whilst you were at Chrome and Parkhouse you should have visited the village of Longnor that is about one and a half miles away. The little cobbled alleyway leading from the market square up to the church was used for the location of the inn they were staying in.
There is one scene where there is a coach and horse outside and if you see just how narrow the alley is I’m amazed they managed to fit them in.
Yeah I covered that in my first P&P video so didn’t want to double up! Chapel Street seems untouched since the Georgian era 👍

Hi Tudor. I so enjoy your videos on P&P, my favorite novel. I loved the portrait of Colin Firth that you mention. Turns out it didn't go to his mother, but was sold at auction in 2009 for about £12,000 to a fan who requested anonymity. Colin Firth wrote a letter about the portrait that accompanied the sale. I have the perfect spot for that portrait at my place.

They are desperately trying to be "inclusive", whatever that is supposed to mean. I've not been to an NT property for a number of years precisely because of this sort of thing but this is a new low. It's just a mess. I'd ask for my money back!

We visited about seven or eight years ago because of P&P. The main staircase was closed then, but the music room was normal and not a disco. When Elizabeth looked out of the window, “the prospect to the park”, when she says, “ to think of all this I could have been mistress”, the scene they cut to isn’t what is actually there.

Excellent video and also a cruel reminder of how far the NT has sunk from it's founding principles. Following a dispute over a large donation to save a property 40 odd years back, this is my first look at the new vision. Ugh.
Yeah who’d have thought it would sink to such lows. Trying too hard to be child friendly based on the toy/child museum at the stables area. I won’t be visiting again any day soon.
This move is my favorite of all the Pride & Prjudice nivues, The move had the perfect actors. No one played Darcey like Conlin Firth and I was so happy to hear that gifted him mother with his portrait. I never liked any of his other movies being more modern and too sexual for me. But this one was so beauitufl from top to bottom. That building and atmosphere was so enjoyable to see. It caused me to enjoy every bit of the movie including the horses. Thank you Sir for sharing this.

I read Pride and Prejudice a long time ago and it’s always been a favorite of mine. I wasn’t aware that there is a series until I discovered it on a movie channel. What a reprieve from so many recent movies and series. I love it and have watched it several times. I am surprised and disappointed that there isn’t anything that references the series. There should, at least, be pictures of the various scenes placed in each room that was featured in the series. The music room is ridiculous! Maybe the powers that be aren’t aware that the series is still alive and loved.
The four women I encountered on my way out - I have a funny feeling they may have had a hand in the recent transformations. They seemed really excited about the new look. They were chattering away about it as I walked passed. To be fair it was only the music room but still!

It's amazing how with movies they do things in such a manner to lead you to believe you are looking at the same building. I would have never thought those inside shots were done somewhere else rather than what we knew in the movie as Pemberley. I was trying to figure out what exactly was going on at that place with all the weird furnishings, signs, and whatever, uh mirror balls. LOL. It was still cool to see. Thank you!
Oh no, turning such places into discos and god knows what else. As you said ' What are you doing'! My thoughts exactly when you walked into the music room. It certainly doesn't look like a stately home. Who makes these crazy decisions? You don't go inside such an edifice looking for discos!!! Or children's play areas in the major rooms. It takes away all the mystique and grandeur. Great well done video with excellent commentary.

What the hell is going on in that music room? Does the National Trust honestly think that people visit great houses to see plastic chairs, neon and disco balls? I for one visit these places to see how the aristocracy and their servants lived, how their households ran and to marvel at the interior fittings, artwork and architecture. Note how the room is entirely devoid of other people; they have rushed straight through and lingered in the more, ahem, traditional settings.

At 2:15 (and to the right of Chrome Hill) is a pointy looking hill which is in fact an end-on view of a pretty spectacular ridge walk valled Dragon's Back (if I remember correctly). Well worth an afternoons walk.

Both you and a lot of your commentators have noted that it is a shame lots of the rooms are not as they were seen in the TV series. And particularly that they don’t bother referencing the television show for visitors . Certainly a missed opportunity.
Having worked on a few period film sets and also for the National Trust et cetera,….I hope you don’t mind me throwing in my two cents worth on this topic;
firstly, set dressers, and the film workshop staff can be (not always), incredibly skilled and create utterly convincing period appropriate coherent interiors, where the passage of time has changed what we see now quite significantly. They are good enough to fool the property staff. Because the series is set at a specific time, and because the property has obviously changed since it was in that time period for real, a certain amount of decorative editing has to occur, and that is not necessarily how the rooms exist in real life. Additionally, time period which room represents now at the property may not necessarily be the same time period that a series is setting, because of course, the property has a much longer history in just a particular decade and happened to be writing about. There are endless curatorial decisions to be made about how a property is presented to its visitors on a day-to-day basis and these can lead it to look very different to how you may expect, even before there’s a strange disco in the music room.
Secondly, as I’m sure everybody realises, what do you see on film and what you see in real life and not the same thing. There is a lot to be said for clever editing. And in this particular case, making us believe that Lyme park and Sudbury Hall are the same building was very cleverly done. But it does mean you’re going to have a certain amount of disconnect when you visit either in person.
Thirdly, the National Trust, like everybody else is on a financial knife edge. And they are doing absolutely everything that they can think of to try and keep their audiences interested and coming back. This unfortunately does result in trying some new things that not everybody enjoys. Personally I would’ve found a disco in the music room a sensory nightmare and had to leave. I can understand other people would have found it stimulating and exciting. But whether you agree with it or not, please do understand that there will have been serious planning and discussion behind the scenes . I never agree with every decision, and some things I think are utterly stupid, but I will always give them credit for at least trying. The National Trust have many faults, but they are not sitting on their bums, drinking expensive tea and eating expensive biscuits, I absolutely promise you. The vast majority of staff are run off their feet, working really hard, have the very best of intentions and I love it when I get to work with them.
So please don’t be disappointed when you visit a property that has been used as a film set. Instead, take it as a challenge to do some detective work rather than expecting it to look exactly like it looked on camera.
I always thought the point of visiting NT or EH (I’ve been a member of both for years) was to visit, relive and experience a property or gardens in its previous or original state. I’m certainly not expecting to see a dressed set that’s for sure but to see a property “reinvented” because someone thinks it’s a bright idea and will draw in new crowds really baffles me.
@@TudorSmith unfortunately they are trying that at some sites. Partly out of broke desperation. Partly because sometimes that's who wins the arguments on presentation strategy. And you better believe that there are arguments. Quite spectacular ones.
I dislike much of the 'modern' audiences approach too. Although to be particularly difficult about it, there are often brilliant ideas behind it but then execution is done poorly so the idea is lost and comes across as something akin to the disco in the music room experience. When I get to ask someone what the plan was, there is often something great behind it, but lack of funding or time or something else gets in the way and the end product is a waste of effort that annoys everyone. Very frustrating.

AT 6:49, was thinking about comment that perhaps they didnt use the exterior of Sudbury Hall for exterior of Pemberley as it was too far away from the other sites...I think it could have been used for Netherfield, as you stated but the site chosen for Pemberley exterior was so, so, so stately! Austere but elegant. Sudbury is large, impressive but much warmer, homey. Pemberley looked kingly.

I loved Sudbury Hall. I think the room where Darcy is getting ready before he goes back to see Lizzy at the inn is there as well, a state bedroom.
I think you’re right. On one of my previous visits there, the rooms upstairs were accessible and I seem to recall being in the room and thinking it might have been used in the series.
Those hills are very familiar. I've climbed them. Parkhouse Hill is a challenge!

I am not sure about what they have done to Sudbury Hall - it looks quite garish. Is it temporary for school holidays or something similar?
Oo I don’t know but you might be right! I know NT push the children’s museum at the court yard side of the building. When I went in there was a mini presentation and although there were about 20 adults there were 3 kids. The guide was talking to all of us as if we were pre-schoolers! I’m not even sure the kids would have enjoyed the house! I hope they restore it back to its original state!
It has been done to make the place more interactive for children. There is a rail of dressing up clothes and crowns for children to wear. I must admit to being quite disappointed at what they had done to the music room when I last visited there in April compared to previous visits which had the music room the same as in P+P. It was great to be able to go up the staircase this time though 🙂

I truly loved every aspect of this version of Pride & Prejudice, and thoroughly am enjoying your tour of this amazing home, but I was appalled to see the music room darkened so you can't see it except for the awful disco lights and incongruent music!
Plus, some other views of rooms and halls with a few odd modern whatever's taking up space and ruining the elegant vibe of the whole place.
What were they thinking!

Yes I agree, why can’t it be left alone like was instead of making everything so gimmicky, like that would be more appealing to young visitors. They can also give a bit of information on what a ballroom’s function was in comparison with what we do nowadays. Don’t kill the ambiance with loud music and mirror-balls.

I read a biography of the Duke of Wellington. It referred to people wandering around his house and grounds as though it were an amusement park.
I think he met his wife wandering around the groynds like that.
So the National Trust hasn't completely dispoiled the original character of these old houses.

I subscribed to you because I enjoy your insight into this particular movie. You would have to know my personal history with it in order to understand me (which is unimportant to anyone) I don't' want to go there but I do want so much to say you ability, or rather you God given gift works quite well and you give an understanding for actors which I rarely pay attention to. Reason at the age of 80 my life is filled in ministry in helping others. Sir, you have my respect and I pray that perhaps there are some things that can come out of the dregs of Hollywood.I am a firm believer God made all good to triumph over everything but then that was another time.

I hate how they find it necessary to dumb down heritage properties with modern elements (especially screens) - it's the same in Japan where they Disneyfy the old temples.
They are perhaps trying to appeal to a younger generation but I agree. It’s so unnecessary and detracts from the original beauty 🤷🏻♂️

I enjoy this series and I have read the book at least 5 times. I don’t think any of the other P&P representations come close because of the amount of detail that was put into the BBC series. At 5.25 minutes you state Mrs Garner. It it was Mrs Gardiner. I actually think the aunt and uncle are the entire key to the whole series - I have a few insights I can share but the Gardiners from “Cheapside” are the key to the whole story. Actually. There some telling scenes in the BBC production.

Curious that they have the music room dark with the disco lights when people are touring the house. I wonder why they would do that? Were they hiding some structural defect in the house? It’s just strange.
Because the other part of the building is dedicated to a children’s museum, I suspect the music room is now set out for the kids. There was a rack of small costumes which would allow them to dress up and…dance I suspect. So out of place for a wonderful old house though in my opinion.
Do you have love for the later version with Keira Knightly? Would love to see those filming locations as well even if the Colin/Jennifer version was my favorite.
I have to be honest I’m not a fan of the 2005 because of the acting. The scenery and locations are great though. Saying that, the 2005 version had 2 great moments for me. When Darcy and Elizabeth meet on the early morning and he tells her he still loves her. It’s so moving. And, the moment Elizabeth tells her father how Darcy had help their family financially. Donald Sutherland is brilliant in that part. So yeah a few good moments but for me it doesn’t redeem the film.

Omg. The NT needs a re think. They have turned Sudbury into a horror story. Hope that isnt permanent. I thought it was a really impressive when i went. Not that noisy ghastly experience.
It’s a funny thing. Someone posted a comment recently about all the thought that goes into these presentations and that we the visitors should adjust our expectations. And yet one comment in favour vs all the many comments against surely suggests it is not to our liking. I personally was most displeased. It was very vexing 🤣
Ah. You should read the book. Jane Austen wrote all those lines you like.
