  • With the Ford Ranger's return, the midsize truck segment grows more interesting. The time is right for a midsize pickup truck comparison test. We've pitted the new 2019 Ford Ranger against the established segment leaders: the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma.
All three have four-wheel drive and a crew cab because that's the most popular configuration. The examples here are equipped with their popular entry-level off-road equipment: the Chevrolet Colorado Z71, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and the Ford Ranger FX4. Why no Honda Ridgeline? We like it, but the Ridgeline doesn't have the basic off-road gear. It lacks a low-range transfer case, underbody clearance is marginal, and it's not offered with an off-road equipment package.
About the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71
The Colorado is a solid all-around truck, and it has excellent road manners. Power comes from a 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine, and it is bolted to a smooth-shifting eight-speed transmission. The Z71 comes with different tires and suspension tuning ― that's it. A low-hanging front airdam hampers the approach clearance, but it can be removed.
The interior is functional and logical, though the controls are a bit small. The touchscreen audio and navigation interface is easy to use, and it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's plenty of interior space up front, and the rear accommodations are about average. The simple back seat's folding strategy doesn't reveal much in the way of storage.
    Chevrolet Colorado Review: www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/col...
About the 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road
The Tacoma is a popular truck among those who actually do go off-road. (We used a 2018, but it's largely the same as the 2019.) Its chassis reflects the priority that Toyota places on off-road performance. Its suspension has the most articulation, its underbody clearance is far superior, and its off-road package has the most gear: a locking rear differential, a sophisticated terrain management system and more.
The 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic can be frustrating because the engine is peaky and the transmission is reluctant to downshift. The combination offers fine throttle control off-road, but that nuance may be lost on daily drivers. Its off-road stance also makes for an odd legs-out driving position. The interior is nicely made, and some of the controls are chunky and inviting. Toyota's own in-house Entune system leaves something to be desired.
    Toyota Tacoma Review: www.edmunds.com/toyota/tacoma...
About the 2019 Ford Ranger FX4
The Ranger dates back to 2011 in Australia and other parts of the world. The U.S. version has been modified by the addition of a turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a 10-speed transmission. The combination generates the most torque in the segment. It also boasts class-leading fuel economy that is 2 mpg better than the other two. Ford advertises class-leading payload, but that's not true for the crew-cab 4x4, which is mid-pack.
The interior looks and feels dated, and the back seat is a one-piece affair that can't be rigged to hold cargo on one side and a person on the other. As for driving, the ride is much springier and bouncier than we ever expected. It has the off-road gear to match the Tacoma, but it doesn't work out that way. The truck's suspension articulation is atrocious, and the traction control system can't cope with simple scenarios. We had to lock the rear differential in places where it should not have been necessary.
    Ford Ranger Review: www.edmunds.com/ford/ranger/2...
Ford Ranger Video Review: • 2019 Ford Ranger First...
    Test Results
We expected the Ranger to do better. The bones of this truck feel older, and it appears Ford spent all of its development dollars on the engine and transmission ― which do perform well. Both its on-road ride and off-road flexibility were the worst of the bunch. The Tacoma? It's really great for weekend warriors who will venture out into the dirt, but you'd better be willing to put up with some on-road compromises.
What we weren't prepared for is how the Colorado rose to the top. It's the best daily driver because its powertrain and its suspension are easy to live with. Its interior is functional and effective, and we like its comfortable driving position. The surprise came off-road. Removing the airdam is annoying, but once we did we found good suspension articulation and a willing traction control system. This truck is the one to get for a balanced mix of on-road civility and off-highway capability.

As a former Taco owner and current Ranger owner I feel I should pipe in. The handling reviews to me were odd. I definitely don't get car sick while driving and in fact it not only handles great but my daughter - who does get car sick in many vehicles - does not get car sick in the Ranger. It drives like a truck. Just like the Taco, it drives like a truck. The Ranger also does come with a plastic bed liner if preferred. The Taco I will say was shifty at low speed with hills, but I'd just select the gear I wanted to get around that. Overall the Taco was... fine. Nothing exciting. Money was an issue so I couldn't get anywhere near the big TRD one (unfortunate initials?). The Colorado I considered but no way I'd get the gas one with diesel available and again money was a consideration. I got a FX4 Ranger for $33 (prior year, retired loaner) and it's just loaded with neat stuff. For what it's worth in my experience the Ranger does NOT shift out of 4 low by itself. I wish they'd done their test again here. I like how he got stuck and then complained when he was able to get out of it using the features of the truck! And if un-dampened aluminum tailgate is too much for you to handle maybe you shouldn't be buying a truck anyway...

I agree and the first thing I am thinking is that they are being paid by Toyota or Chevrolet. Also, look at the tires on the Toyota and Chev vs the Ford. Ranching, I know that tires are a big part of traction off road. The lady driving the Toyota never had the truck off centered ie 1 or more tire off the ground. Lastly, if you are looking for a truck that will stay in tact and is made for off roading as well as city, the Ford is the one. Chev will fall apart and Toyota is good for off road but not city as well as they have been having problems with the Toyota. Watch the video more than once and you will see that they have already made up their mind on which trucks they like.

The Tacoma is a great truck but I hated the seating position with legs straight out and its driving dynamics are subpar compared to the Colorado including its grabby brakes. The only thing I liked about the Ranger was the turbo power, but in reality it's no quicker than the Colorado. Kudos to Toyota for the push button start because that is a great feature on a very antiquated truck.
My business partner has a 2016 Colorado Z71 4 wheel drive with 136,000 miles and hasn't had to do anything other than scheduled maintenance so that played a part in my decision.

Did the Ranger really shift out of lo to hi? Or was it never in lo to begin with? I know on older transfer cases you need to put it in to neutral, shift to lo, put it in drive and then it will 'chunk' over. However while being on an incline like it was there was something off with it being able to transfer to the other gearbox. Perhaps with the enabling of the rear locker it decided to stay in 4 hi the whole time? Generally curious and would like to see an update on the feature with all trucks starting in hi. Then do it again with all starting in lo. Finally do it with a stop in the middle and trying to shift from hi to lo.

Very helpful review. One significant feature that separates the GM twins from the others, and one rarely mentioned in detail by reviewers, is the “auto” transfer case setting that provides full time 4WD. Full time 4WD is similar to AWD and is a distinct improvement over part time 4WD when road conditions are mixed with stretches of bare road interspersed with patchy areas of snow or ice.

    • @username6333

Shane Schexnayder Yes. Like the Tacoma the Colorado has transmission problems with some folks. Toyota reprogrammed to fix theirs. GM was flushing fluid and sometimes changing tq converters to fix theirs. It was discovered that the fluid was collecting water from the air and holding it like brake fluid does. They just put out a new type of fluid to fix it. No more problems. Everyone who has the fluid has had the problem go away. Nobody I know of had the problem though. So it must be a conditional thing that allowed water to build in the fluid.

I understand the Nissan is dated at this point, but weird how it wasn’t even mentioned here. I just took home a used 9,000 mile Frontier pro4x with locking diff, skid plates, leather, sunroof, nav, heated seats, Bluetooth, factory spray in bedliner, and great off-road tires for under $25,000. I saved $6000 over a comparable Taco or Colorado and it does everything these other trucks do, admittedly in a more dated package. I’ll happily keep my $6000 for that trade off. If you’re shopping for a midsize and don’t care so much about having the truck with the newest style and most recent redesign, I highly recommend checking out the frontier. You can save some decent $ and have a great truck .

Just bought a 2019 Pro 4X Frontier after test driving everything else. IMO, its the best truck. Just happens to cost allot less as well. Comfortable seats, great center stack with NAV, SAT 10 speaker stereo with dual climate control zones.. But I really like the ergonomics of the cabin. Nissan really nailed it back in 05. The VQ40 24 valve DOHC with sequential port injection is all about reliability and smooth power with loads of torque. The Frontier chopped Titan ladder frame is stronger then your c channel taco. All steel this truck is a tank. Don't have to deal with gear searching crap taco transmission. Still getting 18-20 MPG and doing it with a 4.0 V6. No gimmicks here. The offroad worthiness is right up there with a tacoma offroad or the new ranger FX4. Yet this truck never gets much mention on other reviews. Which is dumb because people do buy these you know. And in RECORD numbers no less. Nissan selling more of them then ever. Why? Because truck prices have gone insane and they just want something that works. Because its now rated number one reliable in segment. The Tundra is now rated most reliable in Full size. Its funny to point out those are the two old school trucks that have not been updated. All steel, with heavy duty transmissions etc.. Newer = worse in my book.

I watched the review, I think all three trucks are a good pick. Softer suspensions are more suited to offroad trails, while the Z71 package is a compromise, Z71 is meant as an offroad package, but still caters to towing.
Towing road manners would go to the Z71, while offroading would go to the Tacoma, and Ranger. The Z71 is still a capable off roader.
The 373 rear gear would suit the Z71 for more torque, and it may be happier at a higher rpm considering the horsepower number, though mileage might suffer, but only might, it could also benefit.
As for the Ranger, the engine is suited to lower RPM, so probably works well with the 3.42/43. The 3.72/73 option would work well with it if you wanted even more torque or planned on larger tires, but mileage would take a hit. A good option for the off roader.
The Toyota is established as a capable off roader, the Tacoma would also be a good choice depending on what you want.
In my opinion, all three trucks are good picks, and all have strengths and weaknesses.

The FX4 package on the Ranger includes the Terrain Management System. That really should have been included in the review for that section of the test. I’m not sure how the truck magically shifted back into high. I am guessing user incompetence. We have been reviewing all three of these vehicles for purchase and I think this review was pretty poorly done and bordered a tad on deceit by disclosure.
