I think I would pick the Ranger, but that is just a preference thing. Both truck are very capable, clearly. I think for me, the Ranger wins out in the technology dept. Those different terrain modes and the off-road cruise control looked like they work really well. One thing I would also point out on how the Tremor option Ranger differs from the standard one; the truck is a few millimeters wider to accommodate the larger tires, etc. Apparently the rear leaf spring setup is also completely different on it, versus the standard Ranger layout. GM's in house designed shocks on the ZR2 are really impressive. Cool to see what a difference they were over the setup on the Ford. Great job guys! 😀
We own an Explorer and I assure you the terrain management select mode works great! Ford's system works very well when used CORRECTLY. Also, fords hill decent...AKA off-road four-wheel-drive cruise control is amazing. Although I enjoy these guys often they have no idea how some features work on the trucks and that affects the test outcome at times
Great video. The ZR2 with the DSSV shocks is hands down a better ride on road or offroad. We took our ZR2 on Hell's Revenge in Moab, Utah. Diesel handled it like a champ. Dont forget you have an "off road mode" on the ZR2 as well like the mud and rut for the Ford.
I come back and watch this video every now and then. This is the reason I bought a Tremor. I think there needs to be a Tremor vs TRD Pro or Frontier video.
Small trucks prices are too much for me, but Colorado was specifically designed for off road, its better looking, and the 4 door has surprisingly good room in back seats. This was only truck to do the Vegas run across desert stock for testing.
The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is ugly.....looks like it belongs in a Star Wars movie. Aside from the awful, dreadful, nauseous and Transformer front looks.....the ZR2 is really the only somewhat off-road capable 4WD vehicle produced by General Motors. Both the Chevrolet Trail Boss and the GMC AT4 are pathetic examples of a "factory off-road" type 4WD vehicle and fall very short compared to Class 1 and Class 2 4WD trucks available from Ford and Dodge.
Colorado was designed to sell, like all of them. Ranger has more room in the rear. Guess you have never looked at any Ranger torture testing I guess, its only truck to get to hell and back lol.
The ZR2 needs a leveling kit, slightly bigger tires, and a shock relocation kit. With those modifications, it would be the cream de la cream of midsized trucks IMO.
Yeah, but a base model 4x4 Tacoma would shit all over these trucks. Shit, even their pre runner version, would. Lol. Toyota has worlds best and most advanced 4x4 system, and it shows when brands like Chevy, Ford and Dodge try to even compare lol
I think it was worth spending 10 seconds covering the Tremors upgraded suspension bits over the standard/FX4 Ranger variants. The FX4 shocks are terrible on and off road. The upgraded leaf pack (no longer a mono-leaf) on the Tremor is nice as well.
As a 58 year old I do. But at 6’-2” it’s a bit high, meaning at my height it’s a bit hard once I step on it to get in the cab as I have to crouch to avoid wacking my head going in.
@@tommye9057 I've had it since November and am still averaging 30mpg on my 500 mile (highway) round trip. And the engine oil is so much cleaner. It still turn dark, but not that super black color.
The Tremor package is nice, but the dated cabin, and especially the lack of an automatic AWD setting gives the nod to the ZR2 as the more practical of the two for Canada.
Some of the best and most durable engines ever built were the Chrysler 240 ci Slant Six; the Ford 300 ci Inline Six; and the Jeep / AMC 4.0L Inline Six. So.....the inline 6 cylinder engines have a history of reliability and durability. Be interesting to see if the Ford 2.3L Inline 4 cylinder proves to have a similar reliability and durability record. Forced Induction Systems...turbos and superchargers...usually are a maintenance and repair issue. The only nods going the in the direction of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is naturally aspirated V6 engine and the seemingly better quality shocks...providing a better ride off-road...and no doubt on paved roads. The Ford Ranger Tremor offers better clearance, better approach angle, better departure angle, and a better breakover angle. Surprised at the lackluster performance of the Fox 2.0 shocks. Install a few quality aftermarket parts...a slight lift...some better quality aftermarket shocks...King, Fox, Icon....and some bigger and more aggressive tires...Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac or B.F. Goodrich KM2 or KM3 and the Ranger Tremor will be way more capable off-road than the Colorado ZR2.
I basically have a duplicated of the ZR2 they are driving just without the lights and with a diesel. The shock bump was taken care of with a 4" lift kit. Rain, snow, Mud. I haven't had it bog down once while in 4 wheel.
The Chevy Colorado ZR2 has always been my dream truck but after watching your videos I finally decided to get one and it's incredible. Thanks for the great videos.
I think this is one of those decisions where you can't go wrong, I think the ZR2 is cooler looking and I'm just gonna flat out admit that it's superficial but it matters a lot to me, I won't ever push either of these trucks to the limit of their offorad capabilities so the ZR2 is where I'm leaning
It’s crazy that Ford’s add on package is practically equal to a purpose built off-roader. I would, however, like to see a comparison with another purpose built off-roader in Australia’s Ranger Raptor or the Euromarket Wolftrak.
Picked up the 2021 ranger xlt fx4 a couple months ago I'm loving it not quite a tremor but there's not much difference tremor just sits a bit higher with the fox shocks
Fantastic to watch. I am a huge fan of the Colorado ZR2 and have been since it came out. The Bison AEV version takes it to another level. I approve of the new front end too. The Ranger is a handsome truck too, but the ZR2 is definitely more aggressive. I like the Ranger FX4 or Tremor better than the standard Colorado Z71. For an all around off road truck both slow and high speed off roading go with the ZR2, if you want to tow more than 4K pounds and be able to get off the pavement go with the Ranger Tremor.
@Brian Jake Gaming Respectfully, I don’t think you know what you are talking about. If we are comparing apples to apples for towing, the only thing the 2021 & 22 Chevy Colorado (Gas Engine) has on 2022 ford ranger is the trailer breaking controller, but again, even if you just get a z71 instead of the zr2, the ranger still has a higher payload and towing. You can also just get a aftermarket trailer break controller kit for the ranger if needed. But it’s literally a midsize truck. If towing is a big deal just a full-size… Obviously if you are going to pull the diesel card out for the Colorado, of course the diesel engine has more torque and the the same max towing as the ranger. But that’s comparing apples to oranges honestly. Even with that comparison though, the ranger still has a higher payload…
@Brian Jake Gaming Did you not just read my message? That’s like comparing apples to oranges (diesel vs gas engine) However though, even with that comparison, the only the diesel has is more torque. Ranger still has more payload, with the same max towing as the diesel Colorado…
Thanks for the great video! Love watching you guys. Looks like you're having so much fun. I've watched this vid (and part 2) several times and I'm still undecided. Both have pros & cons. Waiting for the 2023 next generation from both before I decide. Hope to see a comparison once they are out.
The rear shock mount location is the ZR2's weakpoint. That said... it's not that bad. And its an area the aftermarket has a huge variety of solutions. You can get armor or a full relocation kit from 589Fab. That said at current market price points I'd have a hard time recommending either when they're a year or two from a replacement. I bought my nearly fully loaded 2019 ZR2 for $39K USD. It's hard to find them that cheap right now.
As a Ford fan I have to say that ZR2 looks amazing and a front locker is great. Can’t wait for the new Ranger though and nice to see how capable this one is.
The Ford Ranger Tremor has been reviewed in the desert of Arizona. The analysis of the suspension has been generally positive. In particular, "Sarah-N-Tune" does pure desert running with the truck near Tucson, AZ. She didn't note any suspension problems going faster on dirt roads, and she tends to be blunt on critical observations. I like the ZR2 but they are behind 12 weeks in manufacturing due to the supply chain shortage (e.g. computer chips). I found a Ranger Tremor in delivery and signed off on it yesterday. I traded in the 2019 Colorado Z71. The trade-in values are higher than normal - again due to the shortage. I like your Truck King reviews in the mud. Here in AZ, the higher mountain ranges above 5,000 feet in elk country tend to get very muddy either in the summer monsoon or the winter snow. Many of the rough dirt roads near the ranches of Eastern AZ were built upon old horseback trails of the 1800s. Hence, the roads can get very rough in remote areas beyond mobile phone network capacity. Meanwhile, modern Phoenix is very crowded - so the midsize trucks are great for maneuvers in narrow, awkward spots for parking or driving. I do like the ZR2 but those models are just not available. However, your video made it clear the Tremor can hold its own in similar conditions. TFL did a similar comparison in snowy conditions of the Rocky Mountains against the Jeep Rubicon. Again, the Ranger Tremor did well. Thanks for the great videos on truck reviews.
I think the Ranger looks better. I just bought new a 2021 Ranger XLT FX2 with level and 3 inch lift with 285/60r18s in Cactus Grey exterior and black accent and interior. The i4 turbo already has aftermarket support. I have a 1992 Toyota 4x4 standard cab short bed 3.0 v6 with rear electronic lockers and manual front locking hubs for off road shenanigans

Four auto is meant for driving on roads that are wet or have patches of Ice, The intent is to provide added traction w/o locking in the differentials. It works using clutches so using it in very slippery condition is going to lead to premature wearing on the clutch plates. Just FYI.

I just priced both the Tremor & ZR2. The Tremor is at $50k and the ZR2 goes for $54k. That's a lot of coin for a mid-sized truck, IMO. Isn't the new Ranger coming out next year?
You must be in Canada? I just bought a 2021 here in Michigan. Sticker was 46k but with all the normal discounts, incentives and negotiations I was at 36k before tax and trade in. Still a lot for a mid size.
The take away really nailed which truck to get. If you live close to the sierras like me where there are equal parts washboard roads to off road trails, definitely the zr2 because of the multimatic for high speed and front diff locker for off road terrain like we have here. Anywhere else where you’re just doing some forest roads with occasional deep puddles, definitely the ranger tremor.

I'd be happy with any of these newer mid sized trucks. I love the front end on the ZR2. The new Frontier looks great also.
Frontier is terrible junk
ZR2 diesel everyday for torque, mpg, looks and functionality!
Cool but more money!
This is the 1st review I've seen where someone actually tests the drive modes on the Ranger and not just talk about it.
Frankly, I hate damped tailgates. When I drop my gate, I want it down.
If they had a way to make the lift gate open at full speed for 90% of the weight and cushion the last little bit it would be the best of both worlds.
I got dampers on eco- boost f150 love them
@Austin Farmer lol yea that added piston just screams luxury
Great Comments.......Completely Agree!
I second this ford just builds better vehicles.
Get the raptor ranger
Id take the zr2 for one reason.....front lockers.
I took my ZR2:up pikes peek it performed beautifully
We you watching the same video cause I see the Tremor out performing the ZR2 😂
@@itzlegion123 you need to drive both to know I did watching a video doesn't prove which is better
I come back and watch this video every now and then. This is the reason I bought a Tremor. I think there needs to be a Tremor vs TRD Pro or Frontier video.
Nice test. Just a little note, chevy doesnt recommend awd mode off road because it can damage the system.
2:15 now THAT’S how you find out if the tail gate is dampened lol 😂 too funny
These both are pretty great trucks. But I personally like the overall package of the Ranger better.
The ZR2 needs a leveling kit, slightly bigger tires, and a shock relocation kit. With those modifications, it would be the cream de la cream of midsized trucks IMO.
I have the 589 Fab relocation kit on mine, it's how they should come from the factory.
@@quintili1 indeed. Also the ability to run a larger tire diameter like a-P285/70 or P285/75/R17 from the factory.
To bad it's not a Ford.
Ranger needs a leveling kit as well on the Tremor. Mine has a Rake that I don’t like.

I would say that the stiffer ride on the Tremor is because it can carry more weight/payload? As usual Chevy is style over substance.
@@kylebutler7142 I don’t think the Tremor has a higher payload capacity over a FX4/standard 4wd model. I could be wrong, though.
@@Meatwadk6 you'd be right but compared to the ZR2 It's higher

I for one dislike "damped" or even auto trunks/hatches. They're too slow. I ain't got time to wait. Slam that thing down, lets go.
He was ready to move to the next part before that tailgate was halfway open. Lol
They also bounce if you are driving with them down, so annoying while backing up to the fifth wheel, thought I ran into something the first time
I'm tired of trucks turning into suvs with a trunk as a bed lol
Those Steps on the FORD should not be that low on the quarters they look "added on" aftermarket
agreed, and it’s a mid-size truck who needs steps on the sides
As a 58 year old I do. But at 6’-2” it’s a bit high, meaning at my height it’s a bit hard once I step on it to get in the cab as I have to crouch to avoid wacking my head going in.
In my opinion, front and rear lockers will make any truck a better option when it comes to slippery and muddy driving conditions.
Should have utilized the zr2 to the maximum of its capabilities

Liked your review the Ranger did well. It bodes well for Bronco
The Tremor package is nice, but the dated cabin, and especially the lack of an automatic AWD setting gives the nod to the ZR2 as the more practical of the two for Canada.
Unfortunately I think that this video proves that the 4WD Auto setting in the ZR2 is pretty useless.
@@SilverWolf25 Completely Agree!!!

That was a sick video. Gives me a great perspective of what my zr2 can really do!
Got to go with the front locking axle and the ZR2. Easy choice.

@Brian Jake Gaming No ford ranger has better towing… They literally tow like a 1000 Ibs more than the Colorado
If towing is a big deal just a full-size…
Obviously if you are going to pull the diesel card out for the Colorado, of course the diesel engine has more torque and the the same max towing as the ranger.
The Zr2 wins of course. It has red tow hooks.
WTF did GM do to the front of that poor thing????
I love it. maybe I'm a weirdo lol
More plastic to replace when you smack a branch on a trail.
They wanted to like the coloardo more and the mud and ruts mode doesn’t add the throttle response that’s just a damn eco boost for ya
Love the Ranger (as an owner), but that Alternator is going to die early since it's at the very bottom of the engine...
As you can see from this and other tests, obviously it'll be fine.
@@adamharris2674 lol, go read the forums...
Whoever designed the shock mounts didn't have "off road" in mind.
The tremor did everything I expected and then some!
I'm not a truck guy. So this is the first time i've seen one of your videos. That said, I've got to say you guys did an great and fair evaluation of these two trucks.

I threw the Ford Performance tune on it and it Hauls now, you aren't kidding about the turbo, especially at altitude
Four auto is meant for driving on roads that are wet or have patches of Ice, The intent is to provide added traction w/o locking in the differentials. It works using clutches so using it in very slippery condition is going to lead to premature wearing on the clutch plates. Just FYI.
Just buy an FX4 and upgrade suspension and tires, and boom you have a Tremor on a budget. I have Courser MXTs and get through anything in Montana!
Lastly, purchase the Procal tune, it gives it that extra boost😀
