  • Today, it’s time for another Ford vs. Chevy shootout, but rather than comparing half-ton pickups we’re looking at each brand’s midsize offering, comparably equipped versions of the 2019 Ford Ranger FX4 and 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71. We’ll take a look at the specs of both and then put them through some real-world tests to see what kind of fuel economy they get in our mileage test, how well they ride in our stability test, and what kind of acceleration they have both loaded and unloaded in our 0-60 test.

    I don't understand why automakers do not make column mounted shifters on smaller cars and trucks to make more space in front anymore.

      Do you think front bench seats will return? I remember my dad had a 04 Escape and I got to drive it too. It had a column shifter and open room for the knees. Got rid of it because of rust and my mom complaining. I wish we still had it. Now we have a new Escape. I like the first gen one better because of the column shifter.

    Not mentioned: the Ranger's rear seat back folds down in a single piece, and doesn't fold flat. So no passengers if you need to fold it. The Colorado's is a 60-40 split, so you can carry cargo and passengers at the same time.

    I bought my 2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6 V6 Extended Cab 4x4 last March. It's the newest model vehicle in my possession & so far, it's been majorly pleasurable. My dad's side of the family has included a consistent portion of Ford drivers (including myself). One of the last trucks I had in possession was a 2007 Ford Ranger regular cab 4 cylinder. That truck wasn't 4x4 but still had its own share held. Even during the time I had that truck, I've been saying that my goal was if/when I had the ability getting another truck in the future regardless that was another Ford if not a Chevrolet or Toyota Tacoma...The significant aspect goal was to make sure having 4x4. The Colorado came with a bed liner & cover along with being a extended cab which I'm a fan of. Two prime examples of me getting good use of the Colorado are doing a quick test run with the 4 wheel drive the first night I brought it home. The second is the weekend before Thanksgiving, I used the truck to go on my first vacation in several years which was an overnight road trip. New Year's Eve, my dad bought his 2020 Ford Ranger XL Super Cab (Extended Cab) 4x4. That truck was the first brand new vehicle my father bought in 18 years. I have driven it a few times & personally, I think it's pretty much about as cool as my Colorado. What I find unfortunate is that both Ford & GM made the decision to end having extended cab designs for their midsize trucks in 2023 & 2024. Because now if you want a brand-new Ford truck with an extended cab, you have to get a F-150 as the first available option.

    I work at a Ford dealership and have driven many Rangers, and I just bought a new Colorado Z71 last fall. This comparison is pretty much spot on with what I think of them. The Ranger seats are way more comfortable, I like the torque from the EcoBoost and its nicely mated to the 10-speed, the SYNC 3 system is great to use, but man the ride/handling on that thing is so bad, it kind of reminds me of my bro's old Cutlass Ciera (which I hated). The Colorado rides/handles great for a truck, feels nimble and planted, I strongly prefer the interior layout, I kind of like the styling better, and honestly I do like the V6, I think it'll age better than the turbocharged EcoBoost. Glad I went with the Chevy overall. Also I took that ridiculous air dam off and installed some proper skid plates underneath the front, I'm consistently averaging 25-26 mpg driving mostly on 40-50 mph backroads.

I do agree with your assessment of the Climate controls being small, but those controls are not primary, primary controls are on the screen. The wife commented how smooth the truck was and not bouncy. My F250 was bouncy without a load. The seats are much more comfortable than the Chevy. I also agree with the brakes sponginess, took me awhile to get used to it. I would have gone with the Chevy, but i have more respect for myself than that. I think at the end of the day , it all boils down to if you want a truck to carry stuff like tools and small farm equipment in the ford or you want to carry Flower bouquets in the back of the chevy.

I figured it would do FAR BETTER because in our last truck-comparison test (here's a link in case you haven't seen it yet: ruclips.net/video/VhALwi9mOsQ/видео.html #ShamelessPlug, LOL) where we pitted the F-150 with the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 against a Silverado 1500, the Ford's fuel economy was quite good and right in line with what the onboard computer said the vehicle was delivering. Of course, towing a maxed-out trailer up a mountain might have been a different story. I think something was wrong with the gas pump or filler neck on the truck, which allowed it to take an extra half gallon of fuel. Something was up because the fuel-economy readout in the Ranger was nearly 20 percent off and I can't imagine they're THAT inaccurate. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!

We have the same size bass boats mostly the same gear. So we're pulling about the same weight. We fill up before we leave and fill up before we reach the border. Every truck he gets say's the gas mileage should be better than mine. And every year he puts 3 to 5 gals more in than me. Ford has been overestimating their MPG for years!

    I have a 2019 Chevy Colorado, and I’m in love with my truck! I got the base model so it’s nothing fancy, but even base model is pretty nice. My center console is huge! I have so much storage to put my wallet or phone anywhere. I would say the only thing that bugs me is the back seats. I feel like people don’t really enjoy being in the back, it’s small and looks uncomfortable. My truck didn’t come with a bed liner so I had to get one myself. I did get a base model so that’s my fault. But the engine is amazing!! It’s a v6 but feels like a v8 when I’m on the highway passing people. I would say overall I love my Colorado, and I wouldn’t trade it in for anything. Plus I got 7,000lbs of bitches I can haul😏

    Just bought a 2019 Ford Ranger XLT Sport with Sync 3 technology. Did not purchase the FX4 off road package because the truck will not see any real off-road action, mostly hauling, towing and camping while still being my day to day city driving work truck. So far I love the turbo charged I4 engine very responsive and it has the start/stop technology which lends to decent city driving fuel economy. I'm a Ford guy but I did check out the Chevy Colorado and I just liked the Ranger in terms of looks, ride quality and the engine was a slam dunk for me. No doubt the Colorado is a nice mid-size truck but for me it's the Ford Ranger.

    • @ShmuelWeintraub
      @ShmuelWeintraub 5 лет назад

      I prefer the looks and ride height of the Ranger too. I also like the turbo engine... if I need the extra power I will accept the poor fuel economy trade off. If I don't, I can stay out of the throttle and maybe do a little better than the epa numbers. I don't know what went on with this guy's fuel numbers... unless he was leaning on the thing way hard, there's no way it should have that high fuel consumption.
      As ever, personal preferences make vehicle buying a hard choice... but I agree, for me it would be the Ranger supercab 4wd.

    These trucks are available in Australia but only in Deisel options, the Ranger has a 3.2l 5cyl option (not petrol versions available in AUS), and the models chosen on this are the "softer" models. My Ranger is 2019 XLT Supercab with suicide doors in the rear, all the lane monitoring systems and an Aluminium tray for $52k AUD, those ones you have covered are a mixed up batch of leftover parts from Australia!

    • @spyder000069
      @spyder000069 3 года назад

      As far as I know they don't have an awd system. However, I have a '07 f150 4x4 with limited slip rearend and it will bind while trying to turn in 4wd so I know what you are talking about. I also have a '19 F250 4x4 and it doesn't seem to do it as much if at all. The difference is the newer truck has an electronic locker so under normal 4wd the rear is still an open differential. It only locks the rear when you engage it. I believe you will still have some binding from front to rear but its reduced because of that. Also another difference is if its slick out my F150 will slide the rear out on you even in 4wd because the rear locks up easy. I don't let my wife drive the truck because of this. However, with the selectable locker on the f250 and it being an open diff it will spin one of the tires but is less likely for the rear end to slide out to the side. The rangers are an open diff on base models and offer electronic rear locker. Safer option in my opinion.

    I drove a Colorado about a year ago and was very impressed. I like to drive my trucks for a very long time and according to what I read, turbocharged engines tend to wear faster. So I would definitely go with a 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine. On the flip side, the V6 Colorado is mated to the 8 speed that had issues. They say they “fixed” the problem by changing the fluid, but I need a better explanation than that. I haven’t been able to find info on 8 speed transmission issues on the 2020s so perhaps they have it under control. Perhaps the reason they haven’t announced a fix is because of the class action lawsuit. If they fixed it there must have been a problem... Wish they’d just sell it with the 6 speed. I hear the Chevys have a lot of electronics issues, but I can handle that. I just can’t purchase a vehicle if I have doubts about the transmission. Does anyone have info on the transmission issue? How about the 4 cylinder Colorado? It has the 6 speed.

    • @aliasfakename8076
      @aliasfakename8076 2 года назад +2

      Late but for anyone who sees this.
      From what ive gathered online and asking a dealership, when the 8 speed was introduced for 2015, they used the wrong fluid from the factory. It absorbed moisture from the trans vent too fast and the change in viscosity caused issues. The TSB was to flush the fluid and replace it with a different one. They seem to have figured this out by 2017, as the complaints online fell off drastically, but the tsb still applies for all 2015+ years with the 8 speed. Ive read forums where people say you can walk into a gm dealer and say you have trans shudder (it has to be shudder cause thats what the tsb is for, not rough shifting) and theyll flush your trans no questions asked.
      Did all this research before buying my 2019 colorado and havent had any trans issues yet at 42k miles.

      The fix is confirmed in a TSB basically swaps the transmission fluid to a synthetic version. I've had it swapped no issues for the last 4 years.

      Had a 2016 Camaro that had the torque converter shudder problem. They followed the TSB and triple flushed the system and installed the correct fluid and I never had any more problems. And that was with 91k miles. The only issue I had was that I had to pay 650 dollars to get it done, when it was their mistake from the factory. Why did I have to pay for their screw up?

      It's not quite true... if you load up either the Colorado or Ranger with options they get very pricey. I've priced the base and lower end models out where I live and you can still save thousands on buying the smaller truck. If you want a loaded Crew Cab lariat, then yes, the price difference will be small (or maybe nothing). The fuel economy difference between full sized half tons and midsized (!) trucks has never been significant. I got just as good mileage out of a 5.3 with cylinder deactivation & six speed auto on the highway as I could out of a 5cyl Canyon I borrowed years ago.

    • @ShmuelWeintraub
      @ShmuelWeintraub 5 лет назад

      It's good point. If you get weird numbers like that (and I think there probably was something wrong with their seat of the pants calculation... after all, the on board computer mileage uses the same data the engine management system uses to calculate fuel/air mixture...) you should really do the test a few more times to establish a trend.
      If the real world mileage is that much different from indicated it's not a story, it's a scandal. As noted above, if you have a turbo engine you have to stay OUT of the throttle to get good fuel economy. If you are a lead foot, just buy the V6 or V8 and be done with it.

    Ok here I am in my 20th month and 22,800 miles, in my second Colorado. The first was a 2016, Z71, Ext Cab, 4x4, V6, that I owned for just under 3 years and 59,000 trouble free miles. That I ended up trading for a Crew Cab, WT, 4x4, V6, that as stated above with trouble free service! I found the seats just the opposite between the two, plus the WT seats are even softer, but have no adjustable lumbar support or heat. But the rest is fine! I do work them fairly hard on occasion, towing the first travel trailer at 20’, 4,000 lbs max, but then the second was 26’, 4,400-6,400lbs. Both with ease, but with a weight distribution hitch for the second truck, not so much for sag, but better ride and sway control and overall comfort. On this one I’ve added some other upgrades, like Bilstien 5100 ride hight adjustable struts and shocks, that I set at 2” front, that just about leveled it, but as I stated I need to tow and still do nice an level, but now with superior dampening and added suspension travel designed into the struts! Along with 265/75-16 Cooper RTX AT tires. Now I have a nice added edge off road. Just need to see if I can remove the front air dam, to gain a little more clearance, just need to be sure more heat while towing is not generated.

I had that problem on 2 vehicles and its a very expensive issue and every dealer shop will act like they never heard of it so you have to spend more for the diagnostic. They know, its happens with many Chevy models and it should be a recall.

    I still can't get over the prices of these trucks. Line them up side by side and you would never think that it's a combined $85,000. I bought a Colorado a couple years ago, not as high end as the one in the test. Mostly because I simply couldn't afford a full size of any brand. It's a decent truck but definitely doesn't feel worth the money. Prices are simply outrageous on trucks anymore.

I got a fully loaded 2019 ZR2 for about $40,000. There is nothing even close in a full-size that will come near that with similar options. I looked at a Chevy Silverado Trail boss loaded and that truck was about 60 grand. With rebates I think it was about 50k.
