- The midsize truck segment is officially hotter than ever as the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado have all been recently redesigned. Each truck is more capable and more modern than its predecessor, but how do they stack up against each other? Edmunds correspondent Emme Hall gets behind the wheel of all three to find out in this midsize truck comparison test video.

It’s a close race between these three midsizers. Which are you picking for your garage? Let us know in the comments below!
Easy. The one that’s not an uncompetitive Toyota always wins. I predicted the Tacoma would be DOA and very quickly outclassed by the competition. And I’m so glad it turned out that way 😁
I’ll take the one most likely to last 10 years or 200k miles - the Toyota-why don’t you bring up that?
AT4X
@@theoutdoordad7395 because Toyota reliability is a myth. Theyve gone downhill with their quality and reliability
@@naveenthemachine Outclassed? really? did you miss all those quality issues and re-calls the chevy had? or are you just blind?
If you have one that's reliable and paid off - keep it...
Sooo... Toyota 😂?
I have my paid off 2012 Whipple supercharged Tundra and absolutely love it. Talk about a sleeper when I need it or 22mpg if I'm not getting on it. My thing is, I want something smaller but still love my power. I'm debating the Ranger Raptor or TRD PRO with turbos... Is anyone interested in a supercharged lifted Tundra with custom interior W/eva's sewn into the head rests?
Yup that’s the plan to keep my 3rd gen Tacoma. But if my beloved truck got into an accident and totaled, probably would get the new Ranger.
2012 Tacoma owner here. Best Tacoma.
Bought the Colorado trail boss. $42,500 with the 360 camera, remote start, adaptive cruise, factory bed liner, blind spot monitoring, trailer brake control and 7700 tow capacity.
A comparable XLT Ranger is about $4k more and I like the appearance of the trail boss with the factory lift more than the fx4 Ranger. Plus you’ve got more power and towing.
Yeah it’s a ton of money for a mid size truck but beats paying the Toyota tax for a taco that was made in Mexico.
Yep, I got the 24 Z71, don’t regret it at all! Ranger looks good but still a hard sell for me, and the Tacoma is butt ugly plus the Toyota tax is a no go for me!
Ranger is still faster....the new transmission will make it even quicker.
@@markwatts1101if you’re buying a truck for speed you shouldn’t be buying a truck lmao
@@markwatts1101that's until it breaks the r80 version of the last ranger had multiple issues. What's worst even there was like a 1-2 month waiting period for dealers to be willing to make an appointment. I had to wait one month for a dealer to take the appointment for the repair and one month to determine the problem and one more month to repair and I only got a rental for the last three weeks. I liked the rangers drivetrain even compared to my current Zr2 but 3+ months to have a known issue repaired is absurd.
@@robertopics There are millions of 10R80s on the road as Ford has used it extensively over the last 7 years. Mine's got 190K and other than it likes doing 2-4 and 3-5 shifts on a regular basis it's been flawless. Of course forums will always list the bad ones first and bad units will always be possible. The 2024 Ranger has a revised transmission and skipping gears is part of its programming but Bronco and Explorer users haven't had widespread issues with it so it looks like it's doing fine.
Let's not forget GM also had issues with the 8L45 and 8L90 for a few years. Delayed shits, hesitation to downshift, rough shifting among other issues. It would be good to know if this has been fixed on the new Colorado and full size trucks.
i'm 9 seconds in, and you're right. I'm just going to go out and buy a Taco!
Emme, you just get better every year. Your insights are always the best!
Bring on the Ranger Raptor please…
Never thought the day would come when I'd have to admit a Chevy had a better interior than anything else.
It’s okay to say Toyota quality isn’t good
Other brands including unreliable ones have surpassed Toyota
@@naveenthemachine so true
agreed, but they get recalled more than Walmart meat :P so choose wisely.
@@shashankshekhar2611 For sure, comment was only about the interiors. GM interiors used to look like hot garbage, they actually look pretty nice these days. But yeah they still scare me a little bit in terms of quality. I haven't bought a GM product in more than 20 years lol.
@@shashankshekhar2611 I think every manufacturer is gonna need some time to iron out the issues on early production models. The 2023 Colorado’s had an update issue that could drain the battery, I believe it’s been resolved but I’m sure the software has kinks to be ironed. The Tacomas have a front diff recall and a few other things but I’m sure most manufacturers will have them straightened out in the next year or two!
Nice job Emme! I would have liked to see the Nissan Frontier in this comparison...
After months of research and a few test drives, I purchased a new 2024 Colorado ZR2. It was nearly fully loaded for less than $52,000 including lane keep, adaptive cruise control, 360 camera etc. after primarily looking at the 2024 Tacomas, I was left feeling as if it was just a very mid truck. That’s the best way I can describe it. It was just meh with no personality. The mid spec trd sport/offroads at my dealer were over $53,000 with much less features than the zr2, I was not a fan of that. Can’t imagine how much the trd pro will cost when they come out, more than likely over $60k and even then the $51,000 zr2 will still compete. I test drove a manual 24 Tacoma and an automatic 24 Trd offroad, as well as a 24 Colorado z71 (hard to find zr2 in stock so I could only guess how it felt) but I am so very happy and pleased with the Colorado zr2. Tacomas power plant was very buzzy and felt very gutless. I’ve had my zr2 for almost a week and I’m passing through 500 miles and have been on it very hard the past few days. It is incredibly fun offroad and makes tons of torque, 430lbft if I recall. The 4wd launch control on it is actually quite impressive, gives a nice whiplash! I was really pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice so far!
Yeah man I was saving up for the new Tacoma Trailhunter. Put my deposit last May, a year later I’m looking to choose the ZR2 as well. We don’t know the Trailhunter pricing yet but we all know it’s well over 60k.
@@Vec135 I was so excited about the new TRD offroads, had a deposit down on a solar octane one but decided on the zr2. Personally I prefer the aggressiveness on the zr2 but I’m sure people would prefer the less “boy racer” theme. I can’t say enough good things about it.
The TRD off road costing as much as a ZR2 is a complete joke. I have almost 40K Miles on mine so seeing the Tacomas front diff failure on TFL was surprisingly hilarious

What a great video!!! I am a ford f150 guy but have been thinking about the Colorado trail boss. This video provides great insight and reinforces some of my thoughts. Thank you!
Very close competition, all three are really nice trucks. My preference would be the Ranger equipped with the V6 twin turbo engine.
All the above with a LOCKER! I have a 2.7 in my work 1/2 ton and I average 21mpgs. It's loaded up all the time with gear too. The Ranger should be better in all ways.
If ford comes out and reliability is on the higher end, they will be number 2 and maybe eventually back to number 1 in this segment.

@@dalea4350my anecdotal evidence is opposite. I have amazing luck with my ford cars and truck. I buy brand new and take great care of them. My fusion is over 250k. However I know that the newer stuff overall is not at the top of anyone’s reliability list. That being said, the old Ranger and even other current trucks are pretty reliable. All I am saying is that there is a chance they have good reliability. Especially if they get through this first year bugs that happen to every automaker.
I was originally suppose to get the 2024 Tacoma. Instead got a 2024 Colorado Trail Boss. I like it.

@@BC08 they can't get them soon enought, should've re-labeled them as 2025 MY
I have had my Colorado almost a year and never needed my headlight switch.
I was going to say the same. I like physical controls but on all of my vehicles including the 12 year old F-150 I leave it auto year round. Almost everyone auto lights with wipers on too.
It’s a meme and these reviewers feel like they need to mention it for credibility. That’s the only explanation I can muster. I’ve also owned a Colorado for 6 months now and never touched it. Auto is fine.
Right!? I've had mine for a little over a month and have yet to notice there's no physical switch because there's no need to even touch it. Even before that I had a grand Cherokee with a dial and never touched it. They act like automatic lights don't exist
Since I commented before I saw a reviewer mentioned they need to mess with the lights a lot for pictures and footage reasons. But again, it’s not something a normal user experiences
Base trim King Cab Nissan Frontier, for me. Simpler mechanicals, steel bed, analog gauges, simple climate controls, small screen, conventional gear lever... easy win.
And 6 cylinder?
@@Clarc115 Yes
And it's not a uni body frame like the others as well. Everything Nissan uses is tried and proven worthy
Buttons instead of screens all the way! Everyone will be getting into accidents fooling around with their truck televisions. How is that legal.
In Europe, they have started deducting safety points (stars) from vehicles that have basic functions like HVAC hidden in the screen. Hopefully, this approach will catch on over here.
the rear back seat lift and secure via a strap/button was a huge fail for toyota. atleast ford's works correctly.
Yeah such a weird cost cutting type decision. I really like having a split seat though to accommodate stuff and people simultaneously so there is some trade off depending on the want or need.
It’s definitely a hot segment right now. Ranger looks remarkably polished. Would be a tough decision depending on local selection, pricing and feel from the drivers seat during a test drive.
The Frontier is severely underrated
@@CPScott16 yeah Frontier is a wolf in underrated clothing for sure. Not sure on how it’s held up in terms of the 3.8/9-speed but haven’t heard too much so it’s probably a fairly decent pairing.
@@CPScott16Nissan has been lacking the technology department for a while but other than that they're definitely a decent choice. Idk why they weren't included.

Very informative....thank you! So, the Tacoma is the only one with ventilated seats available? And wonder what mileage the Tacoma hybrid will get....think I read somewhere that won't get mileage as good as the hybrid Venza, but more like the hybrid Tundra and Sequoia?
I'm definitely between the Colorado and the Ranger. I prefer the look of the Colorado and the offroad features + 4-Auto (which I use both quite a bit), but I like the quality, powertrain, and day to day features of the Ranger. Tough choice... will have to go with my gut feeling! or maybe will be based on if one of them has a nice discount at the time of purchase :) P.S. I really don't mind the headlight controls on the chevy. Having owned a tesla, it's not an issue at all.
Not going to choose at this time. Let's revisit this question at 100k, 200k, and 300k miles. Last truck standing wins.
Edmunds Cars: GM has full time 4 wheel drive. Have to go to Limited trim in Taco and Ranger Raptor to get that. No ventilated seats in Ranger either. No rear vent in Ranger. Rear seat space in Taco is much smaller than other two. GMC Canyon offers more value than the others in my opinion while Ranger has best proven powertrain. Ranger styling is way too conservative too, others much more aggressive.
"I own a 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport package with 220k miles, and it has never given me any issues. I was waiting to upgrade to the new 2024 Tacoma, but the disappearance of the 4-cylinder turbo engine option has disappointed me, so l've decided to go with a Ford Ranger instead."
????? I thought the Taco came with only 4 cal turbo???
Ford Ranger can hold a full sized 4x8 sheet of plywood. That's big in my world where I use my trucks, as work trucks.
If you use your truck for actual work, you can't see the floor of the bed anyway.

The Chevy Colorado's available towing capacity is 7,700 models, but models like the ZR2 can only tow 6,000 pounds. The Ford Ranger maxes out at 7,500 pounds, but its Raptor model only musters 5,000 pounds of towing capability.
5,500 on the raptor actually
If your towing more the 5k you should get a half ton
Sorry if I missed this in the video, but isn’t the Colorado the only one that has full time four-wheel-drive in the lower trims?
If i only had these three to choose from, i think i would buy the Ranger. Unfortunately for the difference in mpg and interior room I opted for the Maverick. If i was towing more weight i would have probably bought the Ranger or F150. Besides saving at the gas pump I also saved thousands on the purchase, ka-ching, laughing all the way to the bank.

Don't get why every reviewer acts like the headlight switch is a big deal. Haven't had to touch the headlight switch in over 20 years with GM's auto headlights.
Same here. And some of the other brands dont have auto lights and see them at night with no lights on just daytime running lights. Mostly foreign brands
I would have to touch it almost daily going through security gates at night so you don't blind security. I also often travel in Safety Corridors that require your lights on during the day.
That is one expensive light switch if and when it fails as you have to fix it, no option if you're going to drive at night or even some places during the day.
This is an absolutely horrible idea!

Great Review. To the point. Punchy and informational. :)
I BET money on FORD ranger,,, man
Nissan Frontier! V6 engine normally aspirated!
We need more Emme!
I have a Red Ford Maverick Tremor and I love it.It’s not heavy duty at all but for basic needs it’s fantastic.
I have 27,000 miles on my '23 Colorado, the headlight switch is a non-issue when you actually drive the vehicle daily. It takes as much time and effort as moving your left hand down and turning a knob. On the other hand, I can't imagine having to use the screen to lock diffs, turn on ventilated seats, etc, like on the Ranger!
What about the new Nissan Frontier?
Yes, why not was the new redesigned Frontier included?
Because they're not playing ball. Nissan is sticking with the working class. These 3 are leaning toward becoming luxury brands.
9:03 “Check the tech” gives me nostalgia for the days of Emmie making videos at CNET 🥺
I'd probably get the Nissan Frontier because its the only one with a naturally asperated V6
which one resists splashed soda the best? Emme votes for that one.
Thanks, Emme for not being a Toyota fan-girl, and giving us an honest review.
Rather disingenuous to point out differences without clarifying that the trucks you had were not optioned the same. You had a luxury Lariat to compare to a base Off-road and Z71? It seemed most of the differences were geared toward the luxury items of the Ford. Bragging about a rear step and bed power which are both optional on a Ford the same as the Toyota. A Denali and Limited to match the Lariat would have told a different story. Pricing would have been closer and then the differences could be easily counted. GM & Toyota = available with cooled seats, HUD, and sunroof. Ford=none of those are even optional. FORD and Toyota have powered rear windows. Not even an option on GM. Toyota has towing software that will back the trailer hands free, powered steps and a powered tailgate. Ford has the trailer assist but GM has nothing. GM is the only one with optional underside cameras. It's not hard, just takes a little research. You went into it with a winner already chosen....
Not once have I cared that the headlight switch in my '23 Colorado is only in the screen. It's a total non-issue. Set it to "auto" and forget it.
I have a 2022 Colorado myself. Z71 fully loaded. My buddy has a 2022 tacoma TRDpro. We kept arguing about who's was better so we both took a ride in each, drove each ourselves. Judged them on everything and even raced them. We both agreed my Colorado was better in almost every single category, even winning the race, gas mileage, and having the nicer interior. We agreed the ride was smoother and a nicer drive than the tacoma, but being the TRDpro his was better offload, especially since I had street tires and he had all terrains
I just ordered a 2024 Colorado Trail boss (TB) w/ the standard 2.7L TurboMax engine (310 hp/ 430 Torque). I got it loaded (Convenience II, Safety, Tech, Adv Trailering, 20" Wheel, spray in bed liner), it was also much cheaper than a comparably equipped Ranger. The TB has a factory 2" lift and can be flat-towed behind a motor home. Neither the Ford or the Toyota can be flat-towed.
im a toyota person but the Ranger is a world platform all over the world, and proven to bad we cant get the diesel here...was driving one in Vietnam a couple weeks ago great vehicle
Just bought a 2024 Canyon Elevation for 40k pretty well equipped. Liked the 11 inch driver screen standard as well as the factory 2 inch lift. We also have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport with 135k miles which has never seen the shop for anything but routine maintenance, so switching to the GMC is a leap of faith. I couldn't get past the steep price increase (Paid 31.5k for my Tacoma, and similiarly equipped 2024 was going to run 47k), the inability to order a truck exactly as we wanted it spec-ed, and that new engine looks atrocious with the plethora of potentially leaky hoses. Time will tell obviously.

The Tacoma has dominated this market for a reason. I will be test driving a Colorado this coming week though, just to see.
Only in this country. Americans are kinda dumb is the thoughts around the globe. The Hilux sells pretty well, but it's still number 7. The Ford F series isn't just the best selling in this country but in the world. Look it up.

No Ridgeline or Frontier in the comparison?
One category you didn’t mention which is the most important is the reliability and longevity.
I cannot get over that the shifter in the Colorado seems to be on the passenger side.
I found mostly trade-offs between the Ranger and Colorado. I was originally going with the Colorado LT because I could get it with a sunroof, but that required an upgrade to 4WD, which I really didn't need.
Comparing the interior of the Colorado LT with the Ranger XLT, I did not like the cloth seat material in the Colorado which is rough and comes only in black, while the Ranger offers a softer tan cloth material.
The Colorado also does not have front passenger seat height adjustment (manual or powered) at any trim level, while the Ranger offers both for the passenger front seat. The Ranger XLT also has a back seat fold down center arm rest standard, while the Colorado LT only offers that with the leather trim in Convenience Pkg III, which adds even more to the price.
So, by going with the Ranger XLT optioned the way I want it, I am saving about $3500 than going with the Colorado. I like both trucks, but the Ranger basically won primarily due to the seats.
The Ford and the GM are assembled in the US. Tacoma which I loved is now assembled exclusively in Mexico and the Pro4X is now starting at $65k.
I have a 2023 colorado and I really like this comparison but I disagree on the worst feature on the interior of the Colorado. It is definitely the lack of a sunglasses holder in the headliner. My 2021 had a great holder. This truck non existent. That's just dumb.
Been back and forth on Colorado or Ranger for my next ride. And I just can’t get over the derpy front end of that Ranger. The availability of the 2.7 V6 is the only thing keeping me from buying a Colorado right now.
The frontend of the Ranger looks like shit.

Not buying a truck with a 4-banger. Period. Frontier is a far better option in so many respects to these three options.
Good video. Not me I would my a Ranger if I was looking for a midsize. That's funny to me they have a switch to lower all four windows on the Colorado but they don't have a switch for your headlights. The only thing that would concern me with the Colorado is the 2.7 four-cylinder. 430 lb of torque out of a four-cylinder with one turbo is a lot of torque to me that doesn't seem like that engine was built for longevity. 😁
In Michigan, after 2-3 years, rust will be visible on the Toyota and Chevy. NOT on the Ranger.
Most important factor for me is looks. Tacoma and Colorado look mean and tough. Ranger looks curvy and non-intimidating. I bought the Colorado

Nissan frontier has a simple more reliable engine than these three. No one asked for everything to be turbo charged.
It's very frustrating that the Tacoma and Frontier are the only mid-size trucks with 6 ft beds.
Ain't that the truth!
If you want the 6-speed manual in the Tacoma, the 6-foot bed isn’t an option. Crazy…
You forgot the Nissan Frontier. My 2023 SV model has the 6 ft bed.
@@user-mv5de5ts1z yep, mentioned it.
On a midsize, never tow anymore than 5000 pounds!! I don’t think people realize how heavy 5000 pounds is. And I don’t care what the engine specs are if you try to pull 6500 to 7500 you push it on the engine and transmission and the control of the vehicle since it’s smaller….. a midsize will pull easily any bass boat or recreation boat. If you’re pulling more than 5000 pounds just go to a halfton. Just because it says it can pull 7500 doesn’t mean you should do it. I have a 91 Baja 225 23 footer that weighs almost 5000 trailer and I pull it just fine with my older Tacoma. most midsize will do the job you needed to do. You really don’t need a half ton but if it’s over 5000 I would recommend a half ton.
Sad to see the 4th gen Tacoma lose the utilitarian flat rear seat storage the 3rd gen had.
Talk about reliability, thats the most important thing lady.
The motortrend review claimed that the 8 speed in the new tacoma still hunts gears just like it in the previous gen.
Let's see, one will see 300,000 miles, and two of them will see the inside of the repair shop before 100,000. Take a guess on which is always the smarter buy. But then everyone seems to be made of money.
No GMC Canyon? Was it left out because its similar to the Colorado? Thanks for the video.
I bought the Taco TRD because it’s the only one with a 6ft bed. The adaptive cruise can handle 70mph curves without freaking out.
Toyota loves to advertise the 1700 pounds of payload on the new tacoma, but that seems to be only on the base SR model with the leaf springs. Every model above gets the coil springs and has only 1200 pounds of payload.
Im not a journalist, so feel free to throw this suggestion in the trash, but showing the door stickers could be valuable for truck buyers to see the real payload.
SR5 1,230
TRD Off-Road 1,610
TRD Pro 1,680
@LAGuy-im9eq I want that to be true, but if you go down to your local dealership and look at the door stickers they're all 1200
The Rebelle of the ball. ❤️
New Tacos are piling up at dealerships and are not selling. SR5s are stickered over $50K and TRD Pros at over $65K!! Common.
The number wars have started in the mid size segment (payload, towing, power). In 2Generations these will be clones of the big brothers.
