Thanks for the great feedback everybody! I mentioned in another comment that once the Amarok launches, we'll re-run these tests with the 70 Series (wasn't available for this test), the LDV T60 Max, Mahindra Pik-Up, Amarok, regular Navara and Ranger bi-turbo. On the award places - the Jeep was outright winner for obvious reasons. Raptor got best value on the basis that it has all of the off-road equipment you need to go off-road without modifying the vehicle - to get anywhere near this level of equipment you'd need to buy the Jeep, which already took out the main prize, or modify one of the other utes, which would void warranty. And in the four-cylinder category, it was a very close placement between Navara and Triton. Ultimately it went to the Navara because it comes out of the factory with the added off-road gear that won't void the warranty. On tyres - as we said in the test, we wanted to test these straight out of the factory. By fitting all terrain tyres to each vehicle, we no longer have a vehicle that is as you can buy off the dealer floor. These are very light off-road tests that any dual-cab ute and any driver should be able to do without needing all-terrain tyres.
Ignoring the who won bit at the end, it was a really enjoyable and revealing video. Thanks for going to so much effort with this one Paul. Personally I think the Navara did well with the big tires and flexible suspension. This was obvious when you almost stopped with the gear change and regained momentum half way up the slope. So on outright capability out of the showroom the Navara was likely the best 4 cylinder as presented. However the Triton is a mountain goat, and with tires and suspension and a front locker it would still be way cheaper than the Navara and make the Rubicon look portly. That is offroad value for money.
Well now that you explained the Navara over the Triton it makes sense. It would be nice if Mitsubishi offered more options with offroad equipment for the Triton.
What do you mean the raptor has AlL tHe GeAr tO go OfFrOadInG? It can have all the gear it wants but it didnt even make it uo the hill, so how is that a winner?
Still makes no sense. Why even bother doing these tests if you are just going to judge on equipment levels? Neither the Navara or the Raptor looked in the game and should have been placed in the middle of the pack based on the tests conducted.
Hi just want to mention that you will have more control 4wding in the ssangyong only if the automatic system is in manual mode. Had a rexton for 13 years could not get anywhere 4wding in automatic mode, it must be in manual mode, and you will surprise a lot of people.
Wet roads or general gravel roads - it's great to have the AWD option. I have turned it on and off at 100, even 110km/h. It also goes pretty strong on harder stuff in AWD. I've found that out by forgetting to go to 4HLc once before! ha ha
Maybe the only 4H permanent in a Ute but not the only one in a 4WD. My Land Rover is permanent 4WD all the time - no mucking about changing between 2 or 4 ever.
I work on a mine site in west aus - we got a new fleet of 12 rangers and they have all started having issues around the 2 year mark, mostly electrical issues/corrosion etc. We are a small time mine and got a good deal on rangers which is why we opted that way but our old fleet of 23 hiluxs are still going fine at 5-7 years old. Different cars, under same conditions. There is a reason why mines buy toyota, we just learnt the harder way.
Statistics don't lie. Even former video they do tested unwell with prado, but customers still choose prado, NOT ford or gm's car because they are not dumb. Pick Toyota.
I use to work at ford and constantly we had electrical issues with the Utes. Although we use to get a generous discount as a ford employee,I never bought one.I opted for the hilux and never had a issue
How did the Triton pass everything and made it look easier then Raptor but it still didn’t even get a mention at the end 😂 … something fishy here with Paul having a raptor …
Triton killed it.. only because it’s on the way out are they not giving it the credit it deserves.. plus Nissan probably chipped in a few $$ for the review
Triton, Hilux and Navara would last for a long time with minimum repair. while others will cost you a fortune to keep em running. specially jeeps. we all know they love mechanics. I would choose a Hilux or Triton any day Great review btw
Jeeps in general? Absolutely. Rubicons? Not so much. Brand loyalties aside, those things are pretty well engineered and the newer pentastar v6 petrols are bulletproof. Ask Americans. I'd also say I've never really heard much complaint out of the RAM crowd. Very common motor being the 5.7 hemi, long lasting as most of those full size pickups are and not expensive to maintain apart from fuel. The Chevy on the other hand if it's the duramax diesel, they can have their dramas as evidenced by Brunswick diesels in Perth putting them in landcruisers. They don't last forever and tend to corrode. Americans don't poor the kind of R&D into diesels we do is Aus though. The yank petrol cars here though I think there's a fair body of evidence to say they are pretty darn good.
Love how he was pleasantly surprised by all of them, except the hilux “yeah it just did what it’s supposed to do” haha that’s why they’re the go to choice
With respect, how can you say that the Raptor is the value option, when it didn’t conquer the hill on all terrains without the front diff locked, and the far cheaper and more economical to run Triton got the job done on a cheap set of highway tyres? The Raptor is undoubtedly way more fun, but I struggle to see how it represents better value.
Kinda with you on this one and for this light offroad test. Isn't the Gladiator cheaper than the Raptor? And given how well the Triton did, surely that would be tops?
@@James-if4zw I am aware of that, and I wasn’t going for a general diss of the Raptor per se, it’s just that it emphatically doesn’t fit the ‘value’ criteria.
@@auswi Jeep won the entire test. Triton came a close second to the Navara on the basis it comes standard with more off-road equipment out of the factory.
If you're looking at it pure offroad wise then the Triton punches high in its class. If you're looking at other areas such as towing, load baring, mods etc it falls off bad. Doesn't tow well or carry weight well cause of how the axle is slung inwards. In terms of mods you can't lift them without replacing the whole front suspension system cause it is stopped by the bump stops and control arms from going any higher. Even 4wd 24/7 says that it's the best in stock form not in any other form. If he was going off those stats then the Triton in value for money is not the best
Just recently found your channel,I follow alot of automotive channels and I must say this is the best when it comes the real information we need as buyers,no useless comedic comments just straight up facts on whether a car is good or not. From South Africa,we have alot of versions of vehicles the same as yours here.Enjoying the vids best 4x4 comparison Test video I have seen.
Great Video and again the Triton smashed it mixing it with the best Utes in this test. Why were you so surprised it has always had one of the best off road credentials and still remains one of the best Utes that money can buy. Cheers 🍻
Yep. That super select system has been around for over 30 years and is still one of the best systems out there. Now is it only Toyota that has finally caught up being able to also drive on the black stuff in AWD.
As a Ranger owner and fan, I am shocked that the raptor got best value for money, to me it's a poser and very expensive one at that when your so called "standard" ranger really did out perform it with less equipment. Best value should have been the triton for sure. Low cost did everything that was asked of it and did it well and bet the tyres on the Triton wernt as good as those on the raptor aswell. I'm not sold on the auto dif lock in the raptor actually works as well as the manual dif lock in the standard form either and I'd be interested to know if it is at all the same system. As we know any diff lock affects steering front more so yes, even still simple physics tells us to corner the inside tyer spins less than the outside so having a full auto lock in low range seems like a terrible idea aswell as you don't always need a dif lock in low range. Raptor may have the gadgets and gizmo's but has reduced pay load and towing capacity aswell which is not taken into consideration here either. Yeah after watching this im glad I didn't get a raptor.
as much as i love mitsubishi its not as good as subaru. but what surprised me are the big americans apart from ford who was disappointing. chevy and dodge did really well in the uphill
Paul, I think you need to rewatch this test. Neither the Raptor or the Navara looked like the winners of this test. All of the American rigs looked better on test, and Triton and Rubicon should have been the only utes mentioned in the winners list.
The MR Triton is such a great car, exceptional value for money, great offroad (if not the best), 10 years capped service and 10 years warranty... one of the best utes out hands down.
I'll never understand why we have more Toyotas than Mitsubishis on the roads. Mitsubishis are just as reliable while offering better packages and capability.
I didn't get the 10/10 bought before that. If only the engine had a little more grunt I'd be so much happier. One design flaw is putting a plastic nudge bar which can't be repaired! Naturally someone has cracked the side and done a runner.
Pity its a shit box , power ride tech, looks design, interior it’s a bottom feeder along with gwm and sanjong You pay for what you get and outdated Ute with a rubber band motor
That Mitsubishi Triton/L200 was spectacular. I had high hopes for it and it came through. I also had high hopes for the Isuzu D'max and it can be better. But WOW!!! The Triton was amazing.
Yeah! Triton made it look easy, all of those tests. Next time you see a standard glx or gsr check those tyres ( dunlops) you’ll be blown away that a vehicle could do that hill climb and descent. There are many tests that can be carried out on 4x4 ute’s , hard to be the best at everything but tritons drive train is second to none. That’s the drive train you need for 4x4, superselect on triton still head of the competition.
I love the concept of this test, and I value it just as much as 4x4 24/7. But a note you should take from their book is put the same tires on every car. It’s like putting Usain bolt in high heels vs a high schooler in running shoes when you have highway terrains vs off-road tires
I think the point was to test all the cars like how they would come from the factory. As if you've just taken your new car offroad. While I do agree with your idea, this still is a fair test, because they haven't changed anything, and are stright up comparing utes.
Never underestimate the old super select from Mitsubishi - I use to be a hater, then I bought a Paj and have been on many tracks without even needing my R/D or little use of it. There is a a great set of mods you can do, one is the traction control mod to enable the front wheels to use traction control while the R/D is in use. Tuned , lifted and reliable as heck. The old triton is a unique looker for sure lol, personally not my taste but the hardware in it is top tier Did you know that the pajero 4th Gen has a carbon fibre drive shaft? quality stuff
Those American trucks do an amazing job considering their tyres and the sheer size of them. I feel like the US culture with desert racing has really helped their development when it comes to off-roading.
I have similiar setup 285 75 17s(34s) with only 2” body lift and some bmc no lift kit with arb front locker.Did u make re gearing? How is it going so far?
@@tedeganagondi Haven't regeared mate but I do think it would be nice! I've considered trying to, but it's so hard to find old diff centres with lower gearing that fits. I love it mate! just noticed several things, 1, the jeep door didn't shut properly when carrying out your chassis test, 2, the roller test with the RAM, you started too close to the grate compared to the other vehicles 3, the Silverado are fitted with non standard tyres that would give tremendous advantage over the others other than that, great video, thanks for the time and effort of you and your team
Silverado ZR2 owner here; I was legitimately surprised that the standard Z71 did so well on a 40 degree gravel hill with all season tires and the G80 rear locker. Way to go 👏🏽 Also, next to all the other midsize pickups, the Ram and Silverado looked ridiculously big 😅
@@keewatin427 23° isn’t that steep for a 4WD. Mine will handle up to 45° (terrain and grip respective, of course) up, down and sideways. 23° is just over ½ that.
@@dodgeviper89 The Pajero traction control has always been good, and the Triton has always been terrible, which is weird as they're from the same company. Somewhere along the line it looks like they gave the Triton the same as the Pajero, and about time too. I was about to buy a Triton here in Malaysia, until finding they don't sell ANY variant here with a rear locker. Oz yes, here no. Seeing as their TC is well-known for being utter shit, I walked away and went to Toyota. But so much money? Decided what I really wanted was a 2nd hand Yota with all the toys already on it, so that's what I bought. If replacing it.... I'd do exactly the same again.
My brand new Triton club cab, yes, I said club cab not dual cab, is a very capable bit of kit on and off road. The best bang for your buck's as far as I could find after test driving almost all of the brands you have just reviewed. And, $23-31k cheaper than some of the other vehicles reviewed in your test.
As an American, I loved seeing all the smaller trucks, which kinda made me jealous that y'all have so many options. They seem pretty capable and I would love to see some of these make their way over to the US. :)
@@raymonds7492 Agreed, I'd love to have more options than just the standard few. For example, it'd be nice to see more compact or midsized trucks. Likewise, I'd like to see more simple trucks here. Not everyone needs all the new tech, sometimes we just need a machine to haul or tow things.
Just drive to the south Border, in Mexico we have the new Ranger, Hilux, Triton (L200) and the Navara (among others), most capable versions for around 40 to 60K USD
G’Day Paul, the reason why the Ram, Chevy and the Gladiator absolutely just walked up Gravel Mountain is because they’ve got a longer wheelbase then the regular dual cabs and they didn’t fall into 2 ruts at the same time which made it really easy for them to walk up the hill!
Not on the market for a pickup truck but watched it all. Great practical tests and no fooling around. Well done Mitsubishi 👍🏼 Would be nice to see the roller test for sedans traction controls and ABS. Would also be nice to see MB G class take on this track as a reference.
@@tyzon00800 under powered relative to what? Something that costs literally over double? Not everyone tows 3 tonne every day. The extra 150nM and KW really worth an extra $45,000 for general use?
Your basic reasonably equipped F-150 here in the states is 50 grand same for the rest. I think because it’s such a beautiful truck being car guys it’s easy for us to be enamored with it such that it’s hard to remain objective. I am a Chevy Silverado guy and rented a Ranger when my truck was in the body shop and loved it. I may get one or a Colorado next here in the states we don’t have the options for good midsized trucks like not just Australia but the rest of the world. I love full-size trucks and they are great and you feel good and safe driving them. I know for a fact unless you pull heavy or haul heavy you just don’t need something that big. I am all for being able to get and drive what you want not being an eco-slur but I think for the States if given more options that market segment would be much more popular. Like he said American trucks are great and they are my Silverado has 225,000 miles on it and still strong but I want a good capable four cylinder smaller truck next. The midsize trucks cost as much as full size trucks as well and I understand the idea of might as well just go big probably would change with a larger amount of choice and options in the segment and maybe drive down the price a little
I think the Silverado and Ram deserve the most praise due to the fact those trucks were not built to really off-road like the other half ton trucks in this competition. Now you take the ZR2 silverado or the Ram trx and that's a different story. Also think the gladiator and ranger are very capable from the factory but they are most certainly not the most cost efficient off-road vehicles. Another point the Gladiator has an advantage over all the other vehicles having a straight axle in the front and back and coil overs.
TRX is like $300k though. Next to $50-100k utes. Might as well bring in 6x6 Gwagons and range rovers too. Might find a reasonably priced tracked tank for that money.
Some vehicles are stopped in a different spot when crossed up and the door is tested. The driver is also driving quite different on the gravel climb between vehicles, and I've noticed sometimes he seems to back off the throttle when he's near the top, like in the GWM. Dodgy review.
Thanks Paul - being a Hilux owner I wasn’t surprised with the test as the Hilux off-road fundamentals have always been there - my fall back choice would be the Triton that also has good off-road abilities, Super Select system and value for money despite its unfortunate turbo lag - third would be the Navara and I’m looking forward to what the new Triton/Navara pairing produces - will never be a Ford owner given their reputation for long term reliably issues and woeful service culture - already seeing failures in the new Ranger (a current affair story recently) - the Jeep is probably good oIf road but very poor build quality with plummeting sales as folk have discovered how bad they are - also not a good look for Isuzu/Mazda and if you going to pay over 60k for a new ute you better make sure you’ve done your research thoroughly 🕵🏼♂️
@@rongrongcassie9103 I felt sorry and annoyed for the two buyers of new Ford Ranger’s recently in QLD that we’re apparently treated with complete disdain by Ford who tried to dismiss their claims - this is not bias from me because my own family members have been treated the same and eventually moved to other brands - I’ve owned several Subarus because they’ve been reliable and Subaru have been very good to deal with all these years - now I’ve owned a Toyota Hilux for three years and am impressed with the vehicle and Toyota’s service/support culture.
I like how you guys explained.your methology in doing this tests and explaining to the viewers what you guys have done to make these tests as fair as it can be. My only gripe is your verdict. IMO, the best value should have been between the triton and the hilux. They've done all of the tests and passed without any asterisk on the results and also without carrying a hefty premium on the price tag.
Best value, I would gladly agree with the Hilux for best value, triton not so much other wise those two really would have stood head to head for best value.
@@kapskandrick6305maybe the hilux on paper is good value, but in reality the dealers all buy them all and slap the good ol Toyota tax on them as used cars.
With the harsh engagement of the Musso it’s showing how effective their traction control is - in the real world of off-roading where you’ll be on loose ground you won’t notice it like you did on bitumen. Great vid Paul
One thing I have noticed is that on the gwm cannon which isn't widely publicised is that you can press and hold the traction control button until it comes up on the dash expert cross country mode which turn Awd into 4 wd by locking the centre diff and sending power 50/50 front and rear like a normal 4wd and can only be used off road only on unpaced surfaces.
And also I think from memory the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel can alter the hill descent control speed also. Does on my gwm cannon anyway.
Am I really the first one who liked this awesome review??? Best video in RUclips it deserves some award! Grrreat job car expert team . GOD I LOVE UTES..
I'd like to see how the Cannon and Musso would perform with a quality set of AT tyres. Also, were tyre pressures adjusted to suit the terrain in all vehicles for the testing?
Great to see Jeep finally getting some recognition. They are expensive (although barely more than a Raptor), but they are amazing and they’ve finally sorted reliability. I have a lifted Wrangler Rubicon and honestly it can be a little bit boring on most tracks because it just crawls up and there’s so much room for driver error
After the way Jeep treated customers who had serious, serious issues with their vehicles was totally shocking & abysmal. Jeep should have had its distribution network kicked out of Australia. I would never buy or recommend any of their products to anyone. So abhorrent...
Those tritons are seriously good off the show floor off road, few mods and some diesel tuning and it's an absolute beast! Substantially cheaper then the competitors where I live. It is old though. I'd still pick the ranger!
Old is gold, that triton gonna outlast those ford rangers, toyota is the biggest offender for selling old platform with a new face, there are conversion kits to convert 2012 hilux to 2021 models. The fact that this can be done means toyota has only been changing the visual appearance of the hilux alone for all these years. Nothing wrong with keeping a reliable platform, however Mitsubishi gets bashed for it more when toyota is a bigger offender in that regard
@warcrab cyber you're 100% right. But I wouldn't buy those toyotas until it's a new platform. I've driven them and they don't drive well on the road and handle poorly. The triton even though is more or less the same age, handles better imo. And of course they'll outlast the new vehicles, the more shit you add to a vehicle the more goes wrong, but as a vehicle that can be a good on the road and off the road while it works that ranger is great. Plus I think the upcoming triton is sharing the platform with the navara? Which means it will drive well! Hopefully they keep that offroad prowess though!
For the BT50 and Isuzu the tires has to be changed to be fair. AT tires as you mentioned at last min. Thanks for the Tests it does help us to know better when we buy a ute!
Bt50 and Isuzu share the same platform. It's a shame they didn't do a good job considering the price range. Off-roading technology is better in the MU-X instead of the Utes. I can definitely understand Isuzu not wanting to cripple their mu-x sales but still, it makes for a lacklustre Ute.
Great test and as a Triton fan I didnt expect anything less from it. The GWM and Musso seem slightly out of their depth here and the BT50/Isuzu really shocked me as they struggled with the hill climb.
@@SirBigzalot I'm not actually so sure, maybe the Triton wheelbase or track width had something to do with it but I cant see any of the top 5 selling vehicles having issues getting up. The Hilux also seemed totally fine going thru and surprisingly the Navara took more effort especially when the gearing intervened.
The Cannon is actually quite good off road if you know how to engage H4 which the manufacturer admittedly has hidden with scant mention in the manual (you have to hold down the traction control button), and if you don't expect to get up a loose gravel hill in the road tyres it comes with without dropping the PSI by 10-15. I've had the same issues in a Hilux at work not being able to drive up a steep grassy hill with crappy road tyres on it. When you pay $46k for the upper model Cannon, which is an extremely comfortable car with lots of nice tech, you've got over $40k to play with for off-road mods compared to the outrageous price of some of these cars. Guarantee with $1500 of AT tyres it would easily have made it up that gravel hill for over $40k less than his beloved Raptor. Also the roller test of the traction control is pretty stupid. Who uses traction control off-road? It's an on-road feature. He could have turned it off in the Cannon with the press of a button and not had any issues, and if he had have held it down for a bit longer it would have been in X Country Expert Mode (i.e. H4) which would have been an actual comparable test to the other utes, rather than trying to drive a slippery surface in the on-road designed AWD mode and then bagging it out for not performing off-road.
@@henkstols9326 yeh not too sure. Same as you surprised at the dmax. I looked at all the reviews before I bought the musso. Reliability was number one important aspect for me than cost. A lot of rave reviews by owners of Musso. I’m yet to add the mods but those who have go everywhere the others do with no issue. Just needs ground clearance and all terrains. Also the factory tyre pressure is set at 42 when it should really be at 36.
@@SirBigzalot I think at the end of the day we all buy vehicles that suite our needs, most folks wont even go as far offroad as in this video and thats including the Raptor owners. To me it was very disappointing that the Isuzu and BT50 struggled and its TC system was poor, both of these should at least compete with the Triton,Navara and Hilux as they have been around forever.
Triton in GLX+ has the same 4wd functionality as the GSR Triton and half the price of the top line Ranger etc. So if it's best value it would be the Triton. You could do that course for $45000.
Mitsubishi 4x4 system is probably the best and it even has metal shift pedals for manual mode! Also it looks the sharpest and most modern here from the front.
Regards to the GWM. If you'd used cross country 4x4 mode or sports mode it would've Been alot more aggressive with traction control allowing more torque. The difference between eco-std-sports- cross country ect is pretty noticeable
That is not true, it turns it all off, the statement "expert mode" refers to the lack of safety driver aids. Its a very common misconception, and you should email GWM globally and they will send you more detailed documentation on how it works (or doesn't actually).
The Cross-Country Expert Mode ~ yes robij, it’s an interesting feature which: (1) Locks the centre differential & (2) Alters the throttle response. Locking the rear differential usually gets the vehicle out of most predicaments.
With the Gladiator, you didn't really need to use the hill decent mode. All you needed to do is drop it in 4 low, put it in 1st gear, let off the brake and let the engine and 4:1 transfer case take over... It's pretty impressive! Great video and review of all these truck! Thanks for sharing!
I do think your Raptor did some loose stone clearing on that first run, Would have been interesting to see how it would have done if you did a hill run again at the very end !!
Valid point to the gravel being loose. However I believe the biggest issue is the width of the Raptor tires. The more narrow Ranger tire would have more pounds per square inch. Wide is great for sand and loose fine surfaces but a more narrow tire is better for the hill they were climbing.
thanks for this, i may not have money to buy one but i'm really a fan of a pick up trucks, and this is very informative to which i would purchase in the near future, more power!
Find me better bang-for-buck than the Musso... A set of AT's makes all the difference. So does 7 years warranty etc. 130,000 on mine in 3 years and has not missed a beat. Brilliant truck ✌
Isuzu has already fixed the traction control issue with the MU-X through the Rough Terrain Mode which works much better. They should bring it to the D-Max and BT-50
Awarding the Best Value award to the Raptor when the Triton and Wildtrak both performed better in the off road tests, particularly the hill climb, seems a tad odd.
Raptor is kinda overrated, the hilux had the same performance as it and it has a single rear locker with highway tires where the raptor has offroad tires and rear and front Lockers. With that information the ranger is also extremely overpriced especially with raptor whereas the hilux is cheaper with almost better performance
@PlebKruger yes, because mud/ruts is worse than normal because it's designed to claw through mud and soft sand with knobby tires, meaning it's designed to spin to gain traction. I live in Florida so I should know that very well, especially since I go offloading through Ocala Forest often and it's all swamp and ruts
As an American that has a ram1500 I can say I was kinda surprised how well it did. No surprise with the jeep as it is built for it. If I was on your side of the world and fighting kangaroos... I gotta say that Mitsubishi really surprised me the most. Not sure the price differences as we only have us vehicles and the taco but for on road I'd keep the ram, for off road the mitsu, I think the raptor looks really good but I haven't seen what well get here yet price wise. Good video I like the rigidity test not something I've seen anyone else test on a 4wd!
The Ram made easy work of that for having a limited slip compared to all of the others with rear lockers. Not to mention the all season street tires. Only truck in the test without a locking diff and performed notably better than a few of them too.
Cheers Paul, Another great real world review from my favourite reviewer and team... followed you since before the name change and once again very impressed with the fairness of the test even despite you having picked up your own Ranger recently. As a Mitsubishi salesperson I was very pleased with our result (despite the nupty trying to sabotage!) And even more intrigued to see our main competitors struggling where I wouldn't expect them to. "Roll on" the new 2024 Triton! Can't wait for your review of that!
Thanks for the great work. What else would I like - to compare the old ones with the new ones, does modern electronics really significantly help to do the same thing as with the old ones without it... I think it would be interesting for everyone.
Best off-road car hands down is a jeep gladiator I personally own one and it is stock as a rock I have upgraded to 35inch tyres and basically go anywhere off-road with ease now! And onroad is just as good people get on board with the gladiators such and amazing car you won’t be disappointed I think is should win best value for money too the features it offers is unreal!
Hi Paul. A pity you didnt have the GWM in the correct mode. Normal mode is not 4H. You have to hold down the Traction control button for 3 seconds & it goes into Cross Country mode on the dash. This is 4H
@@13stabitha13 not trying to be a fanboy, but this is comparing to the Ranger Raptor on AT, I know majority of other utes have HT, but is the Ranger had HT I couldn’t imagine it would make it far. Also when in doubt full send it up a hill
The huge mud tyres on the raptor also gave it a huge advantage, I would like to see you do it all again with all utes having those raptor tyres so you eliminate that variant in the test , most buyers replace the factory tyres in any case. Great video 👍
It's fair to test with factory tires though, since all these tests are "stock everything", else you might start down the alley of "this would do better with a lift" etc too, since many lift immediately too
Awesome! Love your testing mythology very scientific. You took options out of the equation and didn't hand stupid points to random things like other reviews. Very surprised by the D-max and the Raptor. I suspect they have over stiffened the front sway bay on the raptor to give it better on road handling. But anything that improves on road handling decreases off road handling. This is why the jeep is so good. IFS flexes less then solid Axel's and even though most utes have solid Axel's on the rear they are hampered by leaf springs.
Very impressed by the 2 American Trucks. They performed well through most of the test. I would lean towards buying a RAM over a GMC. Absolutely Love the interior space. But, at the higher end you need to spend $$$$$$, which puts them in a separate marketplace and they are just that little bit Too Long to park in a car park ??? This is 1 thing that does concern me about buying a RAM even as much as I Love the whole package. My only question now is What else could I buy ?? I like the Jeep Gladiator which is basically a Jeep Wrangler with a tray. I would need to do a bit more research before I decided to buy one, and with the 2024 models coming out. It might be interesting to see what else is a better choice. The only reason I wouldn't look at buying a Ford Ranger is because I want to buy something that not everyone else buys ?? ( they start to remind me of Commodores ??? ) Some will say it's because they are the Best ?? Maybe half true. But, there are so many other choices.
The winners I thought were 1 Triton because for the price it made it all look so easy 1 Jeep because it made it look real easy, i mean so easy, but cost a lot more and it looked the best
So much enjoyed! I wish to see the MEGA test for 4wd 7 seater suvs such as LC300, Prado, LR Defender 110, and all the ute based suvs like Ford Everest, etc for the offroad and towing etc..
Hey Paul, such a great video! Could you possibly test Subaru’s all wheel drive systems in a similar course? It would be interesting to see how they perform!
I'm interested in the Ranger (Wildtrak, NOT Raptor), but there seems to be a lot of praise for the Triton in the comments. Perhaps, I should seriously consider it.
I've got a Holden SUV and a Ford Ute in the garage, but if I was buying a new dual-cab it would be the RAM 1500 hands down. (Although I'd take off the lower front lip, like I did on the Holden - kerbs and steep driveways love to eat them)
Absolutely Knew The L200 Series 6 Was Going To Walk This Off Road Task.. 😂😂 They are well reknowned for Farmers/Farming Use here in Northern Ireland, down to the fact they can tow 3 Tonne of Cattle with no issues, are built like absolute tanks, highly dependable motors, can cross muddy/boggy fields with loaded trailers and quite fuel efficent for a Pick Up too (30-40mpg)
@@gtbtp2036 Mitsubishi L200 is what the Triton is called in the U.K, and the "Series" is the variation/mark of the L200.. For Example, Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian X Series 6 And we call them a Pick Up, not a Ute, in the U.K as well
Great review. These tests are very good and important to see which off road vehicles are real off-road. It would be great if you could do the same test with high end SUV.👍
Super Select outdid most of the bakkies. Triton in GR spec is easily best value for money, not sure how the Navarra was best 4cylinder. Fantastic video though!
The Silverado LTZ isn't really meant for off-roading, it's an entry level luxury trim. As mentioned, it has the "G80" auto locking differential, same with the Trailboss. I believe sometime soon GMSV will be replacing the Silverado Trailboss with the newer and updated Silverado ZR2. Which is the most hard-core off-road trim for the Silverado. That truck comes with both front and rear selectable lockers.
Actually I believe the LT is considered the entry level luxury package, LTZ is a mid-level luxury package where as the highcountry is considered the top level luxury package but there is a ZR2 coming, it's already out in the US and features full suspension upgrades. Selectable front and rear locking diffs, skid plates, 1 or 2 more terrain modes, and it's own unique interior
@@h115oscilator I wouldn't consider the LT as a "luxury" trim, but instead the "sweet spot" Same with the LT Trailboss and RST. Just enough features in those trims to make them feel decent, the best bang for your buck type trims. The LTZ is where you start to see the luxury features and finishes. HighCountry then takes that to the next level. So does the ZR2, with its multi-chamber DSSV shocks, high clearance front bumper, plus everything else you've already mentioned. Only options that don't come standard on the ZR2 is the sun roof and multi-flex tailgate I believe.
Had a rexton for 13 years could not get anywhere 4wding in automatic mode, it must be in manual mode, and you will surprise a lot of people.
triton killed that uphill challenge like its driving in a straight gravel road... mitsubishis 4wd super select really is a legend since the 90s...
It's legendary for being utter crap. Seems they've improved it, made it the same as the Pajero.
The Triton is such a great offering. Affordable, strong, reliable and a quality 4x4.
Mitsubishi Super Select has been great always and it is the reason to go for it, the only 4h permanent for more security while driving
My Land Rover is permanent 4WD all the time - no mucking about changing between 2 or 4 ever.
among utes, the Raptor also has it now.
😂I can never trust Ford. Hilux Triton Isuzu if not then Musso. The way to go
Statistics don't lie. Even former video they do tested unwell with prado, but customers still choose prado, NOT ford or gm's car because they are not dumb. Pick Toyota.

Looked like it did it so much easier than the Navara.
Triton killed it.. only because it’s on the way out are they not giving it the credit it deserves.. plus Nissan probably chipped in a few $$ for the review

Nav? Long lasting?
@@genuinestance387 theyve come along way since the d40 days
Because he bought one👍🤣
@@James-if4zw I am aware of that, and I wasn’t going for a general diss of the Raptor per se, it’s just that it emphatically doesn’t fit the ‘value’ criteria.

The Americans, they ate the cake
Wait, surely the Triton should've gotten the best value? It was basically walking around the terrain
I seconded that! It did it all and is much cheaper than the Ford...
Agree
If you're looking at it pure offroad wise then the Triton punches high in its class. If you're looking at other areas such as towing, load baring, mods etc it falls off bad. Doesn't tow well or carry weight well cause of how the axle is slung inwards. In terms of mods you can't lift them without replacing the whole front suspension system cause it is stopped by the bump stops and control arms from going any higher. Even 4wd 24/7 says that it's the best in stock form not in any other form. If he was going off those stats then the Triton in value for money is not the best
Triton was good no doubt but on and off road the raptor is more capable
thats only off road. on road its pretty crap and inside is pretty cramped
Most impressive was the Ram and Silverado (despite the brute diff) with a pure 100% road configuration they pass the test effortless
All of the American rigs looked better on test, and Triton and Rubicon should have been the only utes mentioned in the winners list.
however Triton went down quicker (hill descent) than the Nav.
The Silverado, and especially the Ram did those courses with ease!

The old triton is a unique looker for sure lol, personally not my taste but the hardware in it is top tier
Did you know that the pajero 4th Gen has a carbon fibre drive shaft? quality stuff
Those American trucks do an amazing job considering their tyres and the sheer size of them. I feel like the US culture with desert racing has really helped their development when it comes to off-roading.

Like he said American trucks are great and they are my Silverado has 225,000 miles on it and still strong but I want a good capable four cylinder smaller truck next.
The midsize trucks cost as much as full size trucks as well and I understand the idea of might as well just go big probably would change with a larger amount of choice and options in the segment and maybe drive down the price a little
Now That's How you Test 4x4s,Not Drag Testing Them.Thank You Very Much!

I don't know why he quit with the musso so early as compared to the others?? frustrating to watch

Isuzu could add rough-road mode to D'max like they did in the mu-x. Would improve offroad capability significantly.
I always liked a Jeep until I found out about the trash reliability. The Rubicon seems to be better than the other models though.
Howso, triton did it on HT’s? Those TC systems just flat out suck
AT tires would of solved that.
The issues downhill were not the hill descent control systems but the lack of traction from the tarmac friendly tires.
Triton in GLX+ has the same 4wd functionality as the GSR Triton and half the price of the top line Ranger etc. So if it's best value it would be the Triton. You could do that course for $45000.
This is the best comparison video available out there!
Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
its not at all.
So that person who crashed into the Triton must have been on their phone.
Go Mitsubishi Triton. Very impressed. Best value 4wd ute.
I didn't expect that from Triton ...i think it won.
The Cross-Country Expert Mode ~ yes robij, it’s an interesting feature which:
(1) Locks the centre differential &
(2) Alters the throttle response.
Locking the rear differential usually gets the vehicle out of most predicaments.
@@CraigWinstanley1 It can't get out of the predicament that it's a sh*t quality Chinese POS.
Agree. some of the testing seemed biased to me. for example on the rollers not all the vehicles started at the same point .
Yes Paul wouldn't know about cross country mode. Makes the ute look ordinary but as he says, he only does " out of the box," .
I do think your Raptor did some loose stone clearing on that first run, Would have been interesting to see how it would have done if you did a hill run again at the very end !!
yep, I also think that the raptor should have gotten a sanity check after the regular ranger made it up rather easily, just to be sure.
Absolutely. The ranger climbs and that raptor doesn't. That just says everything.
EXACTLY man..
Yeah we have a rexton for the money does everything you need
Love my Gladiator. Best truck I’ve ever owned by a mile and a half!!
@PlebKruger he had the wrong mode on. Mud/Ruts is for extremely slick surfaces, not gravel.
I see what your saying however the hilux has neither modes and did it easily
@PlebKruger yes, because mud/ruts is worse than normal because it's designed to claw through mud and soft sand with knobby tires, meaning it's designed to spin to gain traction. I live in Florida so I should know that very well, especially since I go offloading through Ocala Forest often and it's all swamp and ruts
@@saltyfloridaman7163 Oh i see,i just wanted to point out how the raptor cost much more than a hilux yet has extremely similar offroad capabilities
Would have like to see the Raptor try the hill after all the other trucks have worn it down a bit.
But Paul your exceptional I couldn't ask for more ....your full of organized information way to go man💯🤜🤛
Thanks for the great work.
This is 4H
Went straight to the Toyota Hilux part, was interested to see if the Old Dog still has it. It seems to be soldiering on I must say...
Did the same lol
It's not that old its from 2015
while it was on HT tyres and raptor was on solid mud tyres.
We go for our Old Dog bro, he's been the most reliable for some of us over the years.
In the Isuzu and BT50 you can adjust the speed of the hill descent by tapping the brakes to reduce it or tap accelerator to increase it.
haha exactly.
Why do you need hill descent, when neither could get up the hill?
@@13stabitha13 haha.
@@13stabitha13 not trying to be a fanboy, but this is comparing to the Ranger Raptor on AT, I know majority of other utes have HT, but is the Ranger had HT I couldn’t imagine it would make it far. Also when in doubt full send it up a hill
@@TurtleWurdle also comparing to the Triton on HT..
I was very surprised that the Silverado went up as easily as it did, not a big Chevy fan but very impressed with it.
On hill climb when the vehicle grips and starts to have a momentum he let go the throttle and the vehicle get stuck
The huge mud tyres on the raptor also gave it a huge advantage, I would like to see you do it all again with all utes having those raptor tyres so you eliminate that variant in the test , most buyers replace the factory tyres in any case. Great video 👍
Yeah rims and tires really do matter. And offroaders will add more mods too.. (almost all of them)
It's fair to test with factory tires though, since all these tests are "stock everything", else you might start down the alley of "this would do better with a lift" etc too, since many lift immediately too
Triton is best value hands down 😏, did everything pretty well for fraction of the cost of expensive utes
( they start to remind me of Commodores ??? )
Some will say it's because they are the Best ??
Maybe half true. But, there are so many other choices.
The winners I thought were
1 Triton because for the price it made it all look so easy
1 Jeep because it made it look real easy, i mean so easy, but cost a lot more and it looked the best
Loved the comparison. Thanks for posting. Enjoyed watching
So much enjoyed! I wish to see the MEGA test for 4wd 7 seater suvs such as LC300, Prado, LR Defender 110, and all the ute based suvs like Ford Everest, etc for the offroad and towing etc..
The Triton is effortlessly better off-road compared to the Raptor
Hahaha no, you cannot avoid the lockers...
lol, no.
Great video! I have a Gladiator. It is indeed a beast! I even pulled a small car out of a long, steep, snowy ditch before! Love it!
More glory to beloved gladiator ❤
Hey Paul, such a great video! Could you possibly test Subaru’s all wheel drive systems in a similar course? It would be interesting to see how they perform!
I'm interested in the Ranger (Wildtrak, NOT Raptor), but there seems to be a lot of praise for the Triton in the comments. Perhaps, I should seriously consider it.
To make this test fair you need to put the same tyres on all of them
It’s a test from the factory tho. It’s not meant to be fair. It’s meant to show how the vehicle is off the showroom compared to the others.
They are well reknowned for Farmers/Farming Use here in Northern Ireland, down to the fact they can tow 3 Tonne of Cattle with no issues, are built like absolute tanks, highly dependable motors, can cross muddy/boggy fields with loaded trailers and quite fuel efficent for a Pick Up too (30-40mpg)
There was no 200 series in the test. This was a ute test.
@@gtbtp2036 Mitsubishi L200 is what the Triton is called in the U.K, and the "Series" is the variation/mark of the L200..
For Example, Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian X Series 6
And we call them a Pick Up, not a Ute, in the U.K as well
@@MrAndersie91 well we call them utes and tritons. This test was done in Australia.
@@gtbtp2036 And your point iiss..... 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@MrAndersie91 re read through the comments, you’ll eventually work it out…maybe.
Great review. These tests are very good and important to see which off road vehicles are real off-road. It would be great if you could do the same test with high end SUV.👍
As a fan of dmax im satisfied with its performance
Love that thing specially that iconic isuzu diesel engine sound been fan of that from my childhood
Be good to get a tyre sponsor on board. First thing anyone does is swap out the tyres. Be interesting to see the comparison then.
They should of use the Ram Rebel it is made for the off road and highway towing:)
Every single Ute that didn't have off-road tires failed..... Truly amazing 😂
Great content Paul. l am impressed by Toyota hilux really its reliable , dependable & literally almost everywhere in the world . awesome tests.
