Bloody hell. I think this is the best car test I've ever seen. Would love to see this become an annual thing! Even if certain models don't change much, and throw in a great Wall, ssangyong, LDV and whatever mahindra are ripping off to see what you get for the money. Top content boys 👍
Great reply, would love to see how the bottom end 4x4 vehicles you have mentioned go against the top end models. I think there would be a few surprises.
Been using Tritons on my farm for the last 15 years. I tow 2 ton of hay on a trailer and 800 kilos on the tray every week. Wasn't surprised with the results at all. Best kept secret till this test 🤔
@@AdmissionGaming there was a batch of 2.5l which was either the 2012-2013 year models I believe that overheated due to issues with the engine head cracking. Outside if that bad batch the 2.5 had no issues. I have a 2007 2.5 and it's 15 years now, never overheated and hasn't given any problems
I've had a 2019 Z71 Colorado now for 14 months and I love it. For me, its for some towing and a lot of traveling to and from work. For me, compared to the Hilux and Ranger, the Colorado drove the best on the road without a load. I had my mind set on a Hilux, but it didn't feel right. As much as people can review Utes and say what's the best and what's not, you really gotta take them for a drive yourself.
I have always had my eyes on a 3.2 ranger 4x4 but now I’m looking at rigs to tow my bricky trailer and the Colorado has really put a spanner in the works for me in terms of choosing 😢
For me i think it is a fail mate , people in the vast majority that just fork out a large wad of cash for a brand new scrubber do not then go out and buy another expensive set of tyres , and i might add, changing tyres from factory probably changed performance of the whole lot of the utes in various conditions . The old saying tyres make the car , and they do change the characteristics of the vehicle from standard . .
@@mikldude9376 yes people in vast majority wont change the tyres... but then, I think most enthisiast will, and thats the target audience of this channel
Thanks guys I bought a Mitsubishi triton yesterday and I’m pleasently surprised with the results Looking forward to picking it up . Today, 18th Feb I’ve had my triton for 1 week and absolutely love it, it is so comfortable and nice to drive. I have had a ML Mercedes and a GLC Mercedes in the past, but this triton is much quieter than both vehicles, I traded my C250 diesel for the triton and don’t regret it one little bit. It is packed with heaps of safety features similar to Mercedes, but at a fraction of the cost of course. I love the 10 year warranty, fixed price services and roadside assist. She is a keeper for sure 👍👍👍
I just bought the brand new Mitsubishi MR Triton GLS Premium and the car is a bloody ripper, really blown away by it on and off road. One amazing feature you didn't mention is that the Triton has the ability to run AWD on sealed roads (like a landcruiser), i tow my boat all over the joint and when i am in the hills or its wet, this feature is legit a game changer!! So much more grip and safety compared to rwd, on gravel roads is equally as good.. the fact you get Leather, heated seats, led head lights, rear aircon, 360 degree cameras, difflock, 7 years factory warranty, 4 years road side assist and can get them for $46-48k brand new... amazing!
Or you could have got a Great Wall, same heated leather seats, same torque split AWD option for $26,000 drive away with 5 year 150,000km Warranty. With the money saved you can spend $10,000 on suspension and other must have toys and still be $12,000 better off.
A Real life agricultural Report,in 2015,showed the Triton, cost of ownership to Toyota Hilux, was 9Cents per KLM to 16Cents per KLM for ownership to 40,000klm/2 yrs due to greater initial price, new for hilux?
Personally picked a relatively low spec Hilux, had it three years, did everything I asked without complaint, touring, off road etc. Not the most comfortable however comfortable enough. Easy to service, OEM parts relatively cheap, never missed a beat and then I sold it for near enough what I paid for it and had three years of great trouble free motoring. Now I've got a Cruiser VDJ79R GXL version and loving it.
I ended up with a used 2014 triton. Little over 6 months now and I have had no regrets. Its dam capable on and off road, reliable to. Suspension could use and upgrade so could breaks but for what you get I couldn’t be happier.
I work in roadside assist in towing. I have been telling people for years that while the triton might not be the best ute out there, it's definitely great bang for your buck. I feel this video just confirms this 👍🏼
Dylan Smith 220000 on mine haven’t put a spanned on it only servicing. Fraser Island every year towing a camper trailer. Also lots of farm work as well. Love that car 😍
@james mcbride What are you even talking about? The amarok is and always have been expensive pieces of garbage and they age like a banana. Horrible trucks. I'd pick anything besides it.
I own a 2016 GMC Canyon with the 2.8L "Duramax" engine. We know about other trucks but probably because of government/lobbyist manipulations we are stuck with what we're stuck with. I've lusted for a HiLux for decades and frankly the Amarok would probably be best option for me. Neither are available here. I did see a HiLux for sale once on Ebay that was practically new but couldn't be used on road for 25 years if ever here. It was sold as an off-public road ranch vehicle only.
Actually any one over here in the US doing what 4wd action does is doing it in mid size trucks or Suvs too. Lots of Toyota Tacomas! I myself have a 2008 Nissan Frontier 4x4 4.0L V6 crew cab long bed and its served me well for work and play and is still running strong with 290,000 miles on it. The mid size truck or ute market in the US is a big deal these days and Jeep has even gotten into the game with the new Gladiator.
Thanks for a great review. We certainly are spoilt for choice in dual cab utes. One extra advantage of the Triton transmission is the centre differential which allows all wheel drive on bitumen. The Amarok is the only other with this feature. When towing the tradie trailer around town on damp greasy roads it eliminates wheelspin and is more surefooted. I have a 2017 GLS Triton for this reason.
I have the new Mitsubishi Triton! I am so glad to see this beauty of a car come out on top. I did extensive research before I bought mine in march 2019. Way before this test came out. So glad you guys made this video! There were close to no reviews out there, at the time of my purchase. To emphasis this point!! I was the first in NSW to have an ARB bullbar and therefore most likely the first to have this model of Triton completely kitted out (by November 2019). The Triton is the most comfortable cab and car to drive. Plus it also has the smallest turning circle which has really come in handy. Lastly definitely the best value for money. Top of the range Triton is the same as the bottom of the range Hilux.
@@jasonhalil2591 I have actually and they're very capable off-road. I just prefer my Luxie. It's my personal preference, there's no right or wrong answer. It's an opinion mate.
We're in the market for a 4WD and this has honestly been the best review we have seen so far. Thank you for putting this together! Looking forward to other videos.
Will have to agree with you mate, the results are not 100% well presented to since in some points they didn't comments about some brands, but we have to understand otherwise the video would have 1h. Overall yes this is the best comparison out there.
@@keithstephens1022 in what areas would the 3.2 ranger beat the bt50 with the same 3.2 to get 3rd place? one extra point for towing maybe which wouldn't do jack for its placing? or didn't you know the the bt50 3.2 is the same as the ranger 3.2 because you're simple?
This makes me happy!! I have a 4cyl twin turbo Amarok, 6 speed manual which means it has low range 4wd with locker etc! May not have the power of the 6 but it’s still a brute!
I bought a triton on its specs 7yrs ago and it's never let me down... never needed repairs and I've traveled around aus in it.... I'm looking at getting the 2020 model with upgrades to suspension and brake system! Thanks for doing this comparison... I'll definitely be sticking to the Triton!
Love the channel. Here in the good ole USA I drive A Tacoma 4x4 TRD off road. On a side note I can’t help but speak in n Australian accent for the rest of the day after watching a vid. Love the passion and energy you bring to off-roading and nature. Thumbs up from California.
Tacos & 4runners, great looking vehicles would love to have a slice of that especially as a petrol head. 4runner could bump off the 'nothing' Fortuner. Word is Toyota is looking at merging platforms between US and elsewhere though I expect it'll still be called a hilux here and taco there.
@@fabianelliott96 Don't know why you would say that. The USA may not have 4x4 Action, but we do have a huge 4x4 community with a lot of enthusiasts/hobbyists. Not only that but some of the greatest variety of trails on the planet. We even have enormous parks dedicated just to 4x4ing. Hell, California alone has nine of them and they aren't small either. For example, Kern County park is on 26,000 acres and Ocotillo Wells is on 40,000 acres of land. Why do you think we have so many off-the-shelf offroad worthy vehicles? Such as Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Ford f-150/Ranger Raptors, Chevy Colorado ZR2, Toyoda Tacoma/Tundra/4Runner TRD Pros (yes, made and sold in the USA), Ram 1500 Rebel, Ram Power Wagon, GMC Sierra 2500HD / 3500HD with All Terrain X and 1500 AT4 just to name a few, I mean the list really does go on. The point is I don't think the US sucks at 4x4 at all. My favorite offroad race is right here in the USA too and it's almost here! King of the Hammers! If you don't know Ultra4 racing you have to check it out! 4x4 Action is an amazing RUclips channel and Australia is an amazing country too. Since I'm posting, many thoughts from the way of the USA go out those affected by the wildfires so happy to hear some rain is coming through!
also big bonus for the triton is it's ability to have an on road AWD mode, this makes the car handle so much better in the wet with an unloaded tray. I would also say this adds heaps to the safety of the car
Shhhh!....... do not let everyone know it will be now more expensive to buy a used Mitsubishi. We knew it a while ago that there's absolutely nothing wrong with Mitsubishi.
Ray G seriously Ray, know one is interested in your Great Wall Ute. Do you need to justify your purchase by telling everyone they made the wrong decision by not buying a Great Wall. You must have a deep seated religious background with that philosophy.
Bought a Triton and recently started the journey of building it the way I want.. have had absolutely no issues and love it plus the cost has allowed me to put more into upgrades. Thank you for reassuring my decision blokes.
I Bought a 2019 triton and my only issue is that they came out with a rear diff lock the year later 😂 4WD blokey blokes scoff when you mention a Triton, so cue the Jeremy Clarkson smug face. Pro tip, In an automatic when you come up to a set of lights, chuck it in sports shift and bump it up to 2nd. Keep the revs up to about 1600 and when that light goes green she'll shoot off like a bullet 👍

I bought a d-max love it can’t fault it, purely on the reason of how reliable their engines are and thought well they make good trucks their cars will be just as good and also the way you bloke show it capability off on the show, keen to get its all modded and head off touring
Their reliable right up until it gets serviced by the local garage mechanic who doesnt know what a valve adjustment is or uses oil with a high ash content or if the turbo decides to shit itself and have all its vains seize up but I suppose thats a problem for anyone running a variable turbo

This is one of the best vehicle test that i have seen. The explanation from the experts as to what can be done to improve a particular model to lift its ability was noteworthy.
The most honest and informed review I have seen. Having subject-matter experts for different aspects of the vehicles is what sets this review apart. A very good video.
Honestly looks like they’re all pretty even. Some do minor things better than others really don’t think the average consumer (fat pencil pushers) will notice a difference.
THANK YOU for making the Tire Choice Universal. Can't stand reviewers who chalk the tire up to the single most important thing when writing a truck but then I'll give them different rubber. That means you're testing the tire not the truck
Pretty much but not sure is about that all the time.Unless you want to buy a "wagon" people want a vehicle that can transport the family as well as stuff they need to move without hitching a trailer.A ute makes this impractical with a family.
@Matt Fontwell engine seems pretty fine. Tow within the ratings and you'll be fine. I've towed plenty of super heavy railway signals with mine and it does the job awesome
I have been saying this for years the Triton is a underrated 4WD and can be massively capable off-road I have had my MN and put 70,000 ks on it about 10,000 of those being off-road and it’s still going strong they are massively reliable great video boys.
I will agree that the new Triton is very comfortable, however a good mate has had a lot of trouble with his previous model triton that Mitsubishi fitted a new motor for him out of warranty.
@@henkstols9326 his car was in and out of Mitsubishi several times. After they fitted a new engine he still had problems. Dodgey workmanship. I can say he looks after his gear, doesn't thrash it. Absolutely bloody brilliant. You guys are going from strength to strength! We have a Triton Ute and a Pajero Sport. We love them both and they are extremely reliable. 👍
The information was top notch, but the scoring system was unfair. Their final recommendation didn't come from the vehicles, but their scoring system. Here's how I would go about it: First of all, don't get a Ute/Bakkie/Truck you don't actually need it. And if that doesn't work, then it's Point Two: buy used. You can have the price while getting some extra accessories thrown in. Even reliability isn't a concern, since you could buy x2-x3 Used Utes for the price of x1, and so the Used vehicles have a higher probability of lasting longer/cheaper. Okay, not convinced, so you are looking to get a New Ute. Then disregard the Dmax, Colorado, BT-50, X-Class, Navara, and Hilux. For the best value, go for the new Mitsubishi Triton. Although you can get a better Ute than this at a lower price if you go Used. So this option could be easy to dismiss. For longevity stick to the Ford Ranger. It was developed in Australia for it's conditions, has surprisingly high quality, heaps of parts, dealers, mechanics, and accessories. And it's one of the best contenders with a really good resale value. But as pointed above, a Used Ute will last longer thanks to simple economies. So if you have the cash for New, and are dead-set, don't even think about that. Get the VW Amarok V6 which has a more useful tray, much better on-road traction, heaps of power, and one of the best interiors. Sure it's not like the Dmax for best quality, nor does it have the best support, but if you look after it it's going to be fine as it had a decade to prove itself. These are the correct and objective conclusions based upon the options and information we currently have for the Australian Market. I simply don't care about the badge/logo, I only care about the product. Things will be different depending on your locality (prices, support, conditions) and your personal needs (rock crawling, reliability, certain accessories, etc etc). Duh. So yeah, don't get a Ute, or if you are get a Used one that's suitable for YOU. Otherwise if you're going to buy a Brand New one it's mostly a case of "money is no object" so splurge on the luxuries YOU desire and keep it maintained.
@@ekinteko tldr, but at the end everything is subjective. They cannot possibly cater to everyone in the world. But they did give you complete information so you can decide for yourself. Cheers.
Owned my 2011 Amarok for 10 years now. It's been so awesome. I don't think I would change brands if I were to buy something new. That 6 cylinder model is really attractive. I do like having a manual transmission with low range available with my current ute but I'd change it out for the ease of use of a modern auto.

Great comparison. I expected the Hilux & Triton to be in the Top 3 but not with the BT-50. The BT-50 is an under-rated 4WD ute with exceptional features. Great job mate.
Ive had Navara Tekna for abt 3 yrs, done 75kkm+, added 2 inch susp lift and AT tires. Never had any quality issue with it. It goes every offroad I want: mud, hills, wet meadows - no problem at all. I dont tow much or dont drive beaches, soft sand in forests tracks has never been a problem for it. Comfort on road is much higher then Hillux or Ranger. I love it. Very fuel efficient: usually I get 6,5-7,5L/100k. Highly reccomend.
do what they did in top gear. strap a log to the back tow hitch, when needing to brake on a hill, drop the log and roll back onto log haha. downside, log flicks up and smashes back window :)
Good onya' 4wd Action I've done extensive research on the dual cab market for late 2019/early 2020 and I'm pleased to see everything scores exactly as i've been seeing, with the Triton head and shoulders above the rest. I dunno man, it was all looking credible until talking about transmission/engine and power train and the fella goes for the Ranger " this is the 2L model, i would personally get 3.2L version " which would have changed results in towing and transmission segment as 3.2 has different trans than the 2L. Thought it was super weird that they say they would get the other version because it is better, but than test the car against all other models knowing it is lacking in certain segments because of their selection.
@@1989cranston I see what you mean but i think they picked the 2L just because its the new motor for ford and the most relivent for the market as ford plans to not offer the 3.2 for much longer.
@@Michael-yt8wj good point mate, But thinking about it now they arnt even offering the 2L for long either. 2020 is the last for the 2L and 2021 they are moving to the same engine in the F-150 offered in the states. 3L V6 for the ranger and ranger raptor. i have heard of a few people who have bought new rangers recently and specifically went with the trusty 3.2L over the newer 2L option.

I’m from the USA and I respect this assessment. The fact the used the same tires really made this worth while. I’d love to see someone in America do a test like this.
Fantastic video! I watched the whole thing because I know how much effort you put into this. I’m very reassured that, even with a wide range of vehicles, it is a very close call. The Triton did very well, it’s just a shame about the canopy/ bed length issue with the overhang but it’s no big deal.
I have a 2018 V6 Amarok Highline with 55,000ks as my daily drive. I've completed the following modifications/upgrades. TJM 2 inch lift, TJM rear bar, TJM rock sliders, TJM snorkel, TJM winch, Rhino evolution bullbar, Carryboy canopy, Airbag man air bags, BFG KO2 all terrains, Ultimate Diesel Tuning custom tune, iDrive, Terratuf oil catch can, 3 inch dpf back exhaust with muffler delete. The Amarok is a very capable vehicle and to tackle the low range issue, all you need to do is put it in manual mode and you're set, 1st will get you out of almost anything due to the ratios of the 8 speed automatic. I've done some serious off road tracks from the Otways to the Grampians to the High Country. I've had no issues to date with the Amarok and would recommend one everyday of the week. Put one on your test drive list and find out for yourself.

I've been drivig a Mitsubishi L300 for the last 20 years all over the place. Through long drives, mud, floods, uphill, bad roads, and often carrying heavy loads. i drive the Amarok V6 in the Aventura version and it addresses a few of the issues mentioned. It has hill descent so setting the downhill speed is so easy but even more interestingly and importantly it works in reverse as well. Reversing down a hill you couldn't climb all the way can be and actually is the most dangerous part of off roading. Amarok protects from this. The lack of a low range is another non issue. Its 8 speed and pure grunt enables it to surge through, over and around anything. Negotiating rockfalls can sound fussy but you have total control. The transmission might get hot but I've never noticed it from the driver's seat. The grunt at 200kW and 580nm stock is phenomenal, the ute is a dragster off the mark and overtaking, even with a big trailer on up the passing lanes just so easy. The initial lag from intersections around town is disappointing but I think a safety factor VW has built in because our Porsche is exactly the same and a bloody nuisance. Is the Amarok Aventura good value for money? What are bragging rights worth? Funny thing is the only ute drivers who'll routinely take you on are Triton drivers. They're an odd bunch for trying especially when they're not too keen on 'Rok dust.

The navara with manual transmission is really good in sand , my brother owns a 2019 model and we drove it against a 3D4D toyota and 2.2 Ford Ranger in 2019 . It went up the dunes much higher than those two. We go to the same dunes regularly so i have seen lots of 4x4 tackle those dunes and the navara stock standard( with good tyres) did really well.
Got a 2009 ml 3.2 triton and can't understand why they are so cheap compared to other 4x4 utes. 217,000 km on it now and its still takes me anywhere I want it to go with no problems.
True, you can't compare the two. However tritons are very underrated over the years and it reflects in the price compared to other 4x4 utes of the same. Even the new car is cheaper the most
@@jarrodg6763 Funny that Mitsubishi and Nissan are both part of the alliance of mitsubish, nissan and renault. Main problem being that both Nissan and Mitsubishi almost went broke. Mitsubishi seems to be doing some things right but they do feel a little cheap on the inside.
As a Volkswagen fan I wanted the Amarok to do well, having said that I believe the criticisms of it are likely correct. I suspect a low range would improve it no end. The air intake and alternator issues need to be looked into. As a VW owner the comment about the wheel bolts into the rotor is dead right. It can be a blood pain to line up the holes with the wheel bolt. It’s a shame that these problems pull it down so much when it has so many other winning points.
Julian Taylor not sure I can relate to people’s criticism of wheel bolts vs studs, I find it easy to sit the centre of the rim on the lip, spin to line up and screw in the bolt. Pretty sure I lose less paint on the inside of the rim vs trying to line up onto studs. I might be the lone bolt advocate though 😏 Ps. Also VW owner & fan

Tritons are beasts. All that talk about them overheating is from a bunch of idiots who really don't know how to drive

Yep. Info is good on paper, but it won’t matter until you put it into the test.

I bought a Mitsubishi triton yesterday and I’m pleasently surprised with the results
Looking forward to picking it up .

@@LEVIAHAN Might not have their notifications turned on... Suspect they've had no issues?

You bought, not brought.

Too expensive. Okes want bakkies not SUV's.

@james mcbride What are you even talking about? The amarok is and always have been expensive pieces of garbage and they age like a banana. Horrible trucks. I'd pick anything besides it.
meanwhile, everyone in America watching this clip is thinking:" are you saying there are other pickup trucks in the world other than Ford F-150?"
Actually wish they were sold here.....
The mid size truck or ute market in the US is a big deal these days and Jeep has even gotten into the game with the new Gladiator.
and its no different here in aus, I want a dodge ram but compare the prices of that vs one of these and it is just not worth it
No really...there's other trucks? (Gasps)

Probably best, fairest test I’ve seen. Well done boys.
totally agree
The information was top notch, but the scoring system was unfair. Their final recommendation didn't come from the vehicles, but their scoring system.
Here's how I would go about it:
First of all, don't get a Ute/Bakkie/Truck you don't actually need it.
Cheers.

Triton - probably the most underrated ute in Australia!! And I guess, that is why the Pajero Sport sell in such huge numbers as well!
This review is the genuine article, specific to Aussie buyers. Excellent job 👍. Shock result! This may reshape the decision of many buyers, especially when cost of living is so damn expensive nowadays.

Great comparison. I expected the Hilux & Triton to be in the Top 3 but not with the BT-50. The BT-50 is an under-rated 4WD ute with exceptional features. Great job mate.
Yeeeesss the Triton! We got ours because of the value for money.

@@1989cranston
I see what you mean but i think they picked the 2L just because its the new motor for ford and the most relivent for the market as ford plans to not offer the 3.2 for much longer.

This , without doubt, is the best real world test that I have ever seen on Aussie utes. We currently own a Nissan Patrol (fully spec'd) and an Isuzu D Max work ute (partially spec'd). Really loved this video. I have 2012 Dmax, can't fault it. Love it.
Had my Triton for just over a year, within the first month of having it my family and I did a half lap of Australia, starting from Perth, to Darwin down to Adelaide then back to Perth. Towed a 1.5t plus gear Jayco Camper, did around 20,000 KMs, including alot of off road driving, especially in the Pilbara and Kimberly's. It's a fantastic ute, even if it was 10k more it would be worth it!

Great review. Finally a no bullshit look at all of them. Great to see both good and bad points of all it’s.
Although, can you imagine graham reviewing “CAN I GIVE THE DMAX 11/10 PLEEEASE”
I lifted my amarok and simply adjusted the camber on the lower arm. Stock feature. It's manual which has low range. It does need more suspension travel though.

Great video, thanks for the content. I’ll definitely be looking at some of the modifications you suggest. I’ve recently bought the Colorado Z71 and it would have been good to hear more about the engine in the video.
I’m pretty happy with the purchase and I think aesthetically it looks one of the best. Points to mention are the interior and infotainment, It’s been comfortable in the drivers seat and the dash is simple and easy to navigate while driving.
Incredible test. Shaun's my favorite on this show with his humbleness.

Great technical information! Most videos just talk about touchscreens.
i drive the Amarok V6 in the Aventura version and it addresses a few of the issues mentioned.
About time a real review and not a paid review from ford or holden that you see on the other surposed 4wd channel that you see.

My main criteria when bying it was it had to be relieabity and cheap to run and have all the mod cons that I needed so I did get the top spec lst.
As for the kms it will see me though to that 500 thousand the next ute will 100% be a dmax and the 2020 ones are coming with factory lockers in the rear and more torque and yes I haven't tuned it or done anything like that.

Saying the D-Max and Amarok is equal or better than the Navara off road is laughable.

The air intake and alternator issues need to be looked into. As a VW owner the comment about the wheel bolts into the rotor is dead right. It can be a blood pain to line up the holes with the wheel bolt. It’s a shame that these problems pull it down so much when it has so many other winning points.
