I would by the triton simple, due the the nearly 8k difference between the next lowest price vehicle the dmax. With that left over money you could do all the mods like lift, suspension kit with all the changes to the upper controller arms would make this vehicle more comfortable off road and give more clearance than it already has. For me it’s all about best value for money and what the remaining money could have spent getting a d max instead could get it more capable. That’s what my pick is for the 2021 best Ute of the year 🤙🏼🤙🏼
As I am looking for a tourer, I would buy the D-Max. Why? The relatively premium looking interior totally outclasses the rest of Ute segment in my opinion. Also I admire the 4JJ series engine being somewhat under powered / performance limited to prolong engine life. After all, if I’m buying a diesel vehicle I want it to last and be reliable! I appreciate Isuzu’s warranty as well. It ticks all my boxes and I enjoy watching Graham test the limits of his. Keep up the good work boys.

At a construction job site there were 07-08 Isuzu d-max’s there that had 1.1 million km and were still going strong. That 4JJ1, small 3.0L truck motor is bulletproof
I’m still sold on the Triton, for me it’s the perfect all rounder, it looks great, how can you go past that grill, it’s not over priced, let’s be honest we are buying a dual cab Ute not a SUV, yeah it has inherited problems but some can be fixed like the suspension as old mate said and the others like a canopy.... well let just say my 2 golden retrievers wouldn’t appreciate the canopy anyways 😂😂😂.
My wife tends to ask me every now and then: "why you watch these videos? they all the same!". I do watch these hours on end not just because I like it, but sometimes just sometimes there is this one time when I learn something new and it saves me loads... This is one of them.
Love your work boys. I would love to see a 4wd mid size SUV test with a Pajero, Prado and Disco 4. And also a full size 4wd SUV test with the 200 Landcruiser, Y62 Patrol and range rover.
Is it just me, or is 4WD24-7 fan Doug a natural at presenting. Take him along on a trip! We get to see an Amarok (and its potential pitfalls) on tough tracks! :D
The most disappointing part of this video was Nissan being a no show. Was really looking forward to seeing the new Navara in action. Their loss, just made it easier for DMax to cement it's place in my fandom.
I wouldn't bother with Nissan. They're part owned by Renault and as a result have a Renault master van engine. Anyone who's owned one will understand what I'm going on about! I'd also like to rant that I've also owned two D Max's. One started to rust after 2 years and the other chewed up its own gearbox!
@@JamesBond-wy6sb i own a Navara and Fortuner...and can say the Navara handles better and are more fuel efficient. After two years not one issues, so what's your point?
@@ant208 a buddy of mine also bought a demo navara about 3 years back. He drives it throughout South Africa, as he's got business country wide, and he loves the vehicle (as do I), and it has given him absolutely no issues. Just bought a Triton today so I’m glad I found this review (cough cough no ones listening) if I had an unlimited budget I would’ve gone the Hilux but I’m happy with our decision
Good day, I'm Tienie Bekker from Sasolburg in south africa, my first choice wil be the Isuzu D Max, reason it's reliable service's is cheaper cost cheaper and you can drive it for years and hundreds of miles with no problems, thank you for your 4x4 programs on you tube.
I own a 2019 mr triton and absolutely love it I’ve taken it on some tuff tracks and in the beach I put the biggest tyres you can put on the 18” rims and I found it pretty nice to drive everyday plus a big cab for my two young kids
Shaun great comparison. The Hilux SR5 for me. Great re sale, excellent overhang for a canopy, excellent build ability and great Aussie wide service and parts. As I tour this great country of ours.
Great review Gents, I have watched so many , none like your, since there was talk of the new DMAX , I started looking everywhere on the net, found out it was being released on my birthday , what better omen could there be, I ordered it and received it October 2020, you can’t wipe the smile off my face every time I drive it, the smile got even bigger after seeing this review, many thanks for confirming what I already knew it’s a bloody beaut UTE, awesome review bloke 👍
No idea what that bloke said but I probably wouldn’t look it up with a name like that. I’ve got an Mq and love it! Mr’s look sick with a good bar👍 seriously underrated 4x4
Triton is a great all rounder however I think it should have scored 9 (not 8) for transmission by being the only ute on test with a LARGE oil cooler especially as most had none. That would have put it in outright first place coincidently, same as last year so there's that. Maybe 4WD 24/7 couldn't live that down though.
@@kevinblythe2192 Yeah I think a few of the categories were engineered to make sure they had this 3 way tie for the better watch time. Triton out-performed on transmission, bushproofability, and value for money absolutely. I reckon 4WD 24/7 knew the hate Triton's get from the majority of the 4WD community, especially after they got heaps of it in their last ute of the year when the Triton won. Some people refuse to believe the Triton is actually a really good fuckin ute, they just think "Triton" and think "bad" bc society says so
I bought my new triton in 2015. It was the last of the 2014 model. Up until then I never loved a car. She's an absolute beauty. My pick, stick with what you love. Give my the top of the line TRITON
I put a deposit on a new HiLux before I found you guys. I was looking at the Triton as well but my husband wanted me to get the D-Max. I loved watching your comparison videos, I have learnt so much. Still happy I chose the HiLux and cannot wait to get it and go have some fun!
I have a 2016 2L Amarok from new. I would not swap it. It has done snow and many South Island NZ tracks with no issues. Only mod is a sump guard. The ZF automatic is brilliant and the hill descent control is excellent. Full time 4wd makes for a very safe vehicle. Handling and comfort better than other utes I road tested before purchase. VW parking sensors front and rear an excellent system. Tray bigger than most. Leaf springs mounted outside the chassis which also aids stability. Torsen centre diff very clever.
So I've got a 2017 hilux, great wagon. Test drove the 2021 model last week, it's a rocket ship. Ive also got 2017 highly modified BT50 as my work wagon, shes had an intercooler upgrade and remap, and the new hilux would still jazz on past it. Admittedly the Mazda is running 33s however, I'd go the new hilux all day. Had a 2016 Dmax, it chewed out its rear diff by 55km. Hilux for sure
Thanks for doing these reviews, it's valuable info when trying to decide between them. When I was looking to buy a new dual cab in 2017 I didn't even look at the Dmax, my choice was between the hilux, Colarado and Navara. The hilux won for me and i've absolutely loved it, however the past year I have changed my views on the Dmax and if I was ever to upgrade again, the choice would be between the Hilux and the Dmax handsdown, I'd not bother to look at any other dual cab.
Here in the states, all of us Toyota guys dream of owning a Hilux. I love my First Gen Tacoma and my FJ Cruiser, but what I wouldn't give to have a Luxie in the stable! I pick the Hilux on pure emotion! :-)
After watching this, I was sold on the Triton so bought one. Lots of people don’t understand the maximum tow weights and how they are impacted by GCM and GVM. It’s not as simple as ‘my Ute is rated to tow 3.5 ton so I can.’ Anyhow, great video.
@@caveyslux2786 when you own a channel where manufacturers give you cars you don’t really want to put all of the roof foot down footage on the tracks. As they said they lost on amarok because of how it was treated last year. I think if they seen how it was really put on show almost none would give them new cars to share around and tow/hit tracks.
I've had a 2019 Ford Ranger XL, and one of the first things I did was get the Ford Performance tune pack. While the extra hp and torque are nice, one thing stuck out to me as being beneficial... a better shifting map. And I will say that it was noticeable, the stock shifting map seemed to shift at odd points, feel it all the time, whereas the tuned shifting map was much smoother. As for the transmission skipping around, yes it does, but if you can do it smoothly like the tuned map does then why is that a problem? I for one don't get the comment about having so many gears and only using so many... it really doesn't make sense, the transmission is designed to use the gears it needs at the appropriate time, not just run through every one of them in order. If anything would be a con its, "It has 10 gears, why so many? More gears and skipping just means more possibilities for failure." That said, I think that I've read the 10-speed is designed to skip gears so as to be smoother and reduce wear and possibilities for failure, so it really just comes down to time and miles to see if Ford has the right idea or 10-speeds aren't a grand idea. Edit: After my XL became a total loss from a head-on, I went and got an XLT, and I will be getting the tune pack once again... with a little luck I won't come across anyone driving impaired again. ;l
@@marcelogarcia5094 Nowhere near as much, the 3.2 is so much less stressed, obvisously because it has an extra 1.2 litres to play with, the only real problem is a vave in the trans that gives out
I would go the Amarok, as an Aussie I do a lot of fishing and beach driving and it's a weapon in the sand and that's the where most 4wd go in the west.
I just found your channel and this is the top real 4wd test I've ever found as you guys push the cars to their limits in very real extreme situations! I was looking for the Navara 2021 until you told why isn`t on this video, I'm from the other side of the world and here Navara (Frontier Diesel version) is like the top choice, even I had reserved one for 2022 as there is a waiting queue of almost 6 months to get it, BUT after seen this video, I will go to Isuzu and Toyota to do a test drive as both cars impressed me over the 2020 versions on your other video. Great Job, Really appreciated!
@@rgfc1114 I’ve got a Outback Armour 2 inch lift and a 43mm body lift big tyres and she did fine offroading, what I love it the diff lock I mange to crawl up a hill no problem but few friends in their Hilux and Ranger struggled to get up. Spent fair bit of money on it CVs no issue
You got it right this year Shauno. The new Dmax not only looks like a beast but has be refined to be as tough it looks. If I didn't own a cruiser, I'd be considering trading in for a new Dmax. They've ticked all the boxes this time. Good work Isuzu and 4wd247
Glad to see the Triton still up there but absolutely glad that it was the mighty D Max that has taken it away. For me personally the Triton is still the best. I do not have much regard for suspension lift. Chassis over hang is not an issue really for high capacity but low weight loads and the towing issues of the Triton are not a train smash.
Brilliant test! I'm impressed you hired specific experts and engineers (for each categorie) who seem to know what they're talking about, you understand what things are to value in particular and even from an engineering perspective important details have been mentioned which are mostly ignored in european tests. The german testers are really scary dummies, we do not have such competent guys. Shout-out to Australien testers!
@@brandonnorthey4428 I honestly have no idea how he has never rolled. Perhaps his good nature and charm is just a bluff and underneath is a cunning genius.
After watching last years test I ordered the latest Dmax when it was released sight unseen and no test drive. Got it in November and absolutely love it. I would not have ordered one without the help of 4wd 24/7
I find it hard to believe the final scores when Amarok topped the list on 5 categories and only lost points in some that most people watching will modify 5 minutes after leaving the dealership. Those who have them swear by them
Hey Andre - as we summed up - if you're wanting a tourer and staying away from 4WD tracks - a ranger is a great buy - that engine is ridiculously good! We wouldn't recommend it for really tough 4WDing, or really remote areas where you can't afford a 4WD to break down.
Me to. Although if you take into account most of its failings are easily rectified it remains a compelling buy to those of us that want one. I was just concerned at the limitation on its suspension fundamental.
@@4WD247 Yep agreed! Definitely has a few limitations.. they all do. Although to be fair, if I wanted to tackle tough tracks and that was my priority I don’t know if I’d chose a new/stock dual cab at all
I have never driven a 4WD, but I am looking at buying one. My brother has bought a DMAX and is recommending this. He shared this link with me and glad I watched it.
Sorry fellas but “Comfort” is not only in the front seat... out of these utes only 2 will fit someone in the back that’s more than 6foot without their head hard against the roof. And a Amarok is basically a 4 door Extra cab with no room what so ever for rear passengers... recently tested all of these with Triton and Ranger coming out with best head room and Triton for overall rear seat comfort....
@@deecee1177deecee1177 while the Amarok is wide and you can get 3 people in the back, there’s nowhere to put your legs... having the front seat in a comfortable driving position, I had my 15 year old in the back with his knee against the seat and his head touching the roof... that’s from my experience anyway🤷♂️
I just bought a 2020 triton, and I can't wait to get it home. I chose the triton because of the super select 4wd, gear box cooler and value for money. And also I like the design of the new model.
definitely Dmax. Always built solid vehicles to last and the new model looks so good inside and out. between looks, reliability and the off road profomance with that new rear locka how could ya go wrong.
Well i own a 2014 4x4 Ford Ranger 3.2 plus a 2017 4x4 Hilux 2.8, and honestly i love both my trucks. But for a 4x4 work i would go with my Hilux, because i have used my ranger on the farm and in the bush, and spent most of my time getting stuck or using my winch to pull me out. When i use my Hilux on the farm or in the bush no worries what so ever. I think because my lux is a lot lighter than my ford, just seems float over mud and water. So now we just use our ford for trips out of town. And the Hilux stays home and does all the work, both great machines highly recommended. Awesome video guys, keep up the great work......
You can’t do a review without reviewing the safety - safety is very important to majority of the people - where the D-Max would take the cake as it has the most safety features!! In my opinion only of course
This has definitely helped me think about my next long term vehicle. Ive been comparing the Hilux, D-Max and Ranger. With that price difference and good stats im thinking a low mileage D-Max in the coming years with a nice touring canopy. Thanks guys!
Really enjoyed this review, very clear and informative. Most test/reviews go over one day of testing a new car, in this you also talked about know problems and changes to last models. Even though they are all good and strong vehicles, seeing these differences in suspension, transmission etc is going to make my choice a bit easier for what i need a 4x4. Thanks man!
After watching the X Terrain vid you did Shauno, I bought it, love it and my back at the end of a long day says thank you mate, I’m totally wrapped I went the mighty Dmax in bloody orange to boot 😂
Love my dmax she done nearly 300k and still going strong .have past it on to my son who is now doing her up slowly to be his wheeling truck . Totally are with your choice of winner
Awesome guys! Like last year, a thorough shootout of all the popular 4wd double cabs. You picked it last year that the new d max would be serious contender for 2021. D max ,bt 50 are awesome, the new cabins are treat to sit in. Haven’t done a test ride in either, was a little harder as stock vs demand has been high, particularly the d max, seems everyone wants one, wait time is 6mths. Mazda bt 50 have the stock available, pricing is a little at odds with Isuzu. Nevertheless Mazda has the pedigree and. I like the look of the new bt 50. But as I don’t do heavy towing, and looking at other aspects of the top 3, the Mitsubishi gets the gong. I’ve driven 2021 GSR, pretty refine compared to a few other 4wd that I’ve been in of recent. Love the Isuzu/ Mazda, but it’s the mitsy got me
I own a 2014 VW Amarok twin turbo 4 cyc. Whilst i find it comfortable etc, i can see the Germans over complicated engineering proving a challenge in adverse conditions. In regards to what you have reviewed, I would support a Toyota Hilux , having owned and driven many different Toyota’s over the years, build quality is certainly up there, however resale would be the number one. Toyota in general seem to defy depreciation standards. Mitsubishi is unfortunately at the other end of the spectrum, where there value plummet. Thank you for the review, very informative.
D-Max was a good call... and I’m a Triton owner! Really like my Triton build quality, off-road ability and reliability but having towed a caravan with both my Ute my in-laws D-Max I am now a fan. The Triton rear overhang and throttle lag really stood out after driving the Isuzu.
Awesome review, thank you. Without seeing this, I bought a brand new D Max yesterday... I'm now pleased I did. I was tossing up between the D Max and Hilux, and came up with the same result as you.. $7k difference, bought me a lot of extras to put on it.
“We are not interested to test how squishy the armrest…” This comment killed me! Good jab! And fair point! People want capability, performance and reliability not some squish-metre business. Well done team, great review, absolutely informative. I always wondered who the heck buys a 4wd and measures the squishy-ness of their armrest 😂
I own a 2019 D max , its bloody awesome , we tow a 20 foot van and so far it has performed extremely well , we have been all over Qld and as far as South Australia and Victoria , its never over heated and returns on average 13 lts per 100 klm on the highway between 80 and 100kph. would I buy a 2020 model , Hell yeah but by the time I wear this one out I will be to old to drive . @@xpusostomos Yes you can... that's what comparisons are for...
At a construction job site there were 07-08 Isuzu d-max’s there that had 1.1 million km and were still going strong. That 4JJ1, small 3.0L truck motor is bulletproof
The TRITON have the Super Select II gearbox. This enable you to tow in 4H (open center differential lock) and makes a world of a difference.

The ZF automatic is brilliant and the hill descent control is excellent. Full time 4wd makes for a very safe vehicle. Handling and comfort better than other utes I road tested before purchase.
Edit: After my XL became a total loss from a head-on, I went and got an XLT, and I will be getting the tune pack once again... with a little luck I won't come across anyone driving impaired again. ;l

Glad to see the Triton still up there but absolutely glad that it was the mighty D Max that has taken it away. For me personally the Triton is still the best. Hey Andre - as we summed up - if you're wanting a tourer and staying away from 4WD tracks - a ranger is a great buy - that engine is ridiculously good! We wouldn't recommend it for really tough 4WDing, or really remote areas where you can't afford a 4WD to break down.
