Having driven both trucks for several hundred miles I would definitely lean toward the Ford raptor. And I agree with the comment that the rear seat is basically useless in the TRD. I’ve seen the Ranger raptor go for 52 53,000 but the TRD is just crazy stupid expensive

Glad you mentioned the Toyota's part system as opposed to the Raptor's full-time 4x4 system. This means any Subaru will out-traction your bad-ass TRD Pro on icy or snowy streets. (I do wonder how torque is distributed on the Raptor. No reviewer ever explains this.)
@@2011buddylee thanks, it’s great, already 1.3K miles on it 😅 aside from some software oddities here and there, only real complaint I have are the seats. I don’t like the plastic mold cutout they did below the headrest, it’s a little uncomfortable over time for my upper back.

Great video both trucks looked and performed awesome. For me I am a huge fan of brute power plus the Raptor is more affordable. Toyota and Dodge/RAM whatever both need to work on their pricing.

dude, i daily drive the full size raptor and it's awesome! reliability comes down to shorter frequent oil changes; it's turbo charged so it creates more heat hence oil changes needed more often. nearly 90K on mines and no issues.

Yeah you don't get fancy shocks but you can put the price difference towards some lol I imagine the seats play into the cost a bunch, I see that becoming an option in the future vs it being standard
Not really. If you go with iForce Max TRD OR with equivalent amount of premium package (heat/ventilated seats, 360 camera, etc.), it will come around almost near 60k. Kinda sucks.
@@MountainBound17 I think I saw couple of them on Facebook Marketplace. Yes they exist but at that price may be better to go regular with premium package and enjoy the better tech.
I see a lot of complaints about high prices but to put things in prospective, i purchased an FJ in 2007 for 35K. With inflation that $35,000 in 2007 is worth about $53.20 in 2024.
I'll take the RR all day in the midsize truck segment. Probably the best overall value on the truck market right now in any weight class. Big win for Ford.
Great review! I love both trucks. But you had me at front locker. The rear seat space and lack of ability to be folded down is a big deal breaker for me.
I have a 23 drw f350 with custom 3.0 king coil overs that are manually adjustable.. and I have a 24 ranger raptor and I loveeeeee the steering wheel adjustability and the power is great.. I love my baby raptor
The factors that make the difference for me: I want reliability, resale value, and a truck that I think looks nice. I am getting a Trailhunter for that reason. Is it expensive? Yes. Will I have to buy a truck in the next 20 years? Maybe, probably not. If I do wanna buy a new vehicle, can I sell it for damn near what I bought it at? Yes. and quite frankly, the Ranger Raptor looks too plain Jane for me. Its big brother is obvious when you see it on the road, but I feel like the Ranger Raptor would go under the radar, which may be a plus for a lot of people. Not me.
I think you’re missing out on the reality of the new Taco. You won’t have it for 20 years, unless you want to replace the hybrid engine at great cost. Hybrids don’t last. Also, Tacos have transmissions breaking left and right on them. The Ranger is genuinely more reliable at this point and would likely last you longer. This ain’t the same as the old Taco anymore….
Resale value on anything labeled Raptor keep their value just as good if not better than a Tacoma these days. I paid $35k for my 2013 Raptor in 2019 and I can sell it right now for close to $40k. The same will be with the RR as well. Plus no stupid hybrid system that will give you problems in a few years. So, you might as well get the RR.
I love how your 45 seconds into the video and your stateing the Toyota's ALL NEW UpGrades as your Under the truck manually adjusting the ' Adjustable Shocks ' ..LOL... FORD ALL DAY LONG !
I noticed the better articulation on the Tacoma which added to more ground contact for traction which shows on several shots on this video and on the hill climb without needing a front locker. Also the noticeable difference in ground clearance. The Tacoma clearly has more of it even though different wheel base
I put 132k on my third gen tacoma and got a nice pile of money for it when i traded it for a RR last week. Nothing but love for the third gen but i had no idea what I was missing.
Loving these comparisons! As always, thank you so much for such thorough and interesting videos and review of specs, driving impressions on and off road and, covering strengths and shortcomings on and off road. Thanks Ryan!
Mid-size is the new full-sized. These are still wildly overpriced but the average tradesman is going to have to make do with Rangers, Tacos and Colorados of the world because the full-size market is ridiculously overpriced. More specific to the video, great comparison Ryan. You've been nailing these face-offs lately and I'd love to see more comparisons across all of the trucks and SUVs that you review. Toyota have absolutely nailed the looks on the TRD Pro but they need to at least offer something Raptor-like when it comes to engine varieties. You can hybridize or turbocharge or both, but a 4-cylinder is never going to excite.
I do truck camping so am going with the Tacoma Trailhunter. 2400 watts in the bed means (for the most part) no more dealing with fuel canisters (big built in battery+induction cooktop) and having to worry about buying ice. (will have a Lithium power station plugged in to portable dual zone fridge). Sometimes will still haul a propane tank and burner to boil crab when on the coast. 🤙🏽
With the transmission on the ranger raptor keeping you in the high might not last as long engine wear from high revs plus turbos, spooling could equate too reliability longevity in the end.
Ranger is a far better value. Taco looks awesome, but too expensive. I'd probably go TRD off-road with a few options, a tune and upgraded suspension. I'll keep rocking my paid for '14 taco tss with upgraded suspension.
Raptor, price matters. It sounds great, excellent power delivery, inside suspension adjustment, better backseat. I have seen mixed reviews on the Toyota seats, more saying not really noticeable. My fear, how long before Ford says we can match the Toyotas price?
I love the looks of the TRD Pro so much more than the vanilla looking Raptor. I think Ford was way too conservative with its design. That said, I think Ford knocked it out of the park with this truck. It has way more to offer and for about $12,000 less than the Pro, it’s a no brainer. Ford for the win!
The biggest issue with 0 to 60 runs is whether or not the transmissions are geared properly for that, so yes it might be slower but if it was tuned properly, than a lot of these vehicles would definitely be doing differently. But I love how you just test everything and it seriously makes me judge and decide the best options I want for my car, and also what vehicles are better overall.
Agree that the cost of the Taco (which looks AMAZING, btw) is insane… AND… I’d like to see an overall cost-of-ownership comparison over the next ~10 years… see where they land at that point.
I think if I owned the PRO I would just take the back seats out all together and build a flat platform for my dog with some storage underneath. Looks like that's only good for kids the way it sits, but you probably can't even fit a car seat in there either.
Great comparison review! As a Rivian R1T owner, I absolutely love having a real back seat and great storage underneath. I can actually take my family out, or a few friends, and it won't feel like torture for anyone but myself and one lucky passenger. In this day in age, when so many trucks in the mid-size segment come with four doors, you can bank on me expecting those two additional doors to be usable! In that one regard alone, I would take the Raptor over the Taco, and it being the cheaper option is icing on the cake...if that universe lacked the existence of an R1T, of course.
One more important thing to mention, the Raptor has longer suspension arms than a standard Ranger. Toyota doesn't do that; the Pro has the same suspension geometry as the regular Tacoma. Big missed opportunity by Toyota. If I was going shopping now, I'd be leaning towards the Raptor, especially considering the price.
Great review! Seems the Ranger has a better engine and hardware(lockers). Seems the better bang for your buck. But man, that tacoma looks so much better than the raptor from the front.
Ryan, you look like you're having so much fun testing these! Thank you for a great review... I would have thought the Taco was better than the Ford, but if I was to drop 50k on a truck it would be the Ranger now.
Bro Toyotas look so good but come off inept too. Like the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 4 Runner, Tundra, ane this have some very glaring downsides and its getting a little exhausting feeling like there is going to be a really stupid downside to a new toyota release. Im scared to see what theyll mess up with the new Rav4...the Crown is worse than the Avalon and the only things with significant improvements as of recently are the Camry Prius, Sienna, Corolla GR, and Supra. Everything else is just coming off mad stupid. Why is this Tacona so expensive and why not a crewmax style body if youre gonna make some stupid seats that arent optional
Insane price? ARB steel bumper $2500, rock sliders $1500, onboard 2400W power system for accessories saves you another $1500. You have just sliced $5k+ from the sticker price. You also get 22/24mpg where Ranger gets 16/18mpg. This gives you another $2800 savings on gas over 50k miles... so which one is more expensive now? If you don't need those extras then why would you buy Raptor in first place? It seems most people crying about the price tag have never gone offroad and have no clue what gear is necessary for such adventures. People that build overlanding rigs can see where the value is.
Great comparison, as a Toyota fan the raptor wins. Ever since the trd pro lineup was introduced years ago, it never was a proper “desert runner”. Because it was just shocks that they upgraded, the ranger raptor has longer control arms which increases wheel travel thats why it performs better. the Tacoma doesn’t have that, it’s only wider because of wheel offset and fenders, trd pros are just shocks and badges.
Its not that it "cuts" power, it just cant keep supplying electric power for long durations. The battery is too small and is only designed to supply short bursts of power. The biggest flaw with this design is the electric powertain. Baja drving, for which it is designed, requires a drivetrain that provides consistent power delivery. Electric assist can only provide short bursts of power. The majority of the time, the base 4 engine alone is the power you will be getting a majority of the time. That is why the ford engine is far superior for baja.
Ranger Raptor owner myself for over a year. We don't get Tacoma in South Africa, but that TRD PRO looks really awesome! Love all the kit it comes with and those seats look amazing. That said, if I had the choice between the two and I must smash open my own piggy bank, the Raptor will win...
A-trac is actually superior to a front locker due to the fact it’s able to send up to 50% power to one wheel. A front locker can only send 25% to a wheel. The vast majority of in users do not understand how the system works. It’s able to calculate and think extremely fast on its feet. All the end-user has to do is keep the throttle input the same and not letting off ! As soon as you let off you disengage the system. A-trac in the vast majority of times will always outperform a front locker every single time.
As with all of these trucks, there is really not a bad choice. None of them are perfect and none of them will last forever. Buy the truck you love and can afford and go about your life the way you want. If you're lucky enough to have any of these (Ford, Chevy/GMC/Toyota even Nissan) congrats!
Hey Ryan, fun video. Why do you think Toyota only offers the Torsen-based full-time system on the Limited and the Land Cruiser, while Ford offers a full-time system on the Raptor?
With too similar products (albeit suv vs truck here), features is likely the metric to separate and up-sell vehicles You can get the upcoming 4Runner with a rear locker, swaybar disconnect, neat suspension and all on the TRD trims but no full time 4wd, you can get full time 4wd in the limited / platinum trim but no rear locker, swaybar disconnect etc if one wants a 4Runner WITH full time 4wd, swaybar disconnect and all that stuff....you step up to the Land Cruiser, if one wants a Land Cruiser but with a turbo v6 or eKDSS or whatever...you step up to the GX
I'm toyota guy, but in this case I don't see a reason for high price on taco when something like ford raptor is out there. Don't say o reliablelity because toyotas recent problems.
This is exaclty the video I needed to watch. I'm a bit shocked that he didn't praise the TT-V6 more than the TT-4Cyl, espeically the almost 100 HP difference. I have my Supra, but sadly it won't be next to the TRD Pro. That Ranger Raptor was the overall clear winner imo.
I traded in my 2021 F-150 Lariat for the 2024 Ranger Raptor that I ordered in 2023. I've been in the Ford ecosystem for decades. But I sure wish Ford offered it's U.S. consumers the option of cooled seats, a moonroof like the Maverick and more rear under seat storage for the money, even if they capped the price at $60K. Other than that, I like the smaller footprint of the Ranger compared to my 6-Inch lifted F-150 on 35's.
@@Ww8.3 And 8 people if you have a bench seat for the middle row but it does not tow more. It can tow up to 5,000 lbs. The Ranger Raptor tows 5,510 and the Tacoma can haul 6,000. While the Ascent is capable of mild offroading, that is definitely where midsize trucks excel and with hauling dirt, wood, and other big and dirty items like that. For most people, however, the Ascent is definitely more practical. It's like a minivan (grocery and people hauler) but it will actually be unusable when the going gets rough (ie. snow, rough roads etc.)
I love the TRD pro. Im pretty sure over its life it will be a better long term vehicle than the Raptor. Except for those seats. They're a wasted compromise and another example of Toyota trying to fix a problem that nobody asked them to fix But its a hard pill when the Raptor has the superior power train and suspension system. If the TRD pro was 6k cheaper it would be a serious competitor. If there's one thing I'll give the taco, in terms of looks it blows the competition out the water. That thing looks mean as hell, especially in person. If this type of purchase is going to be a short term buy then Ranger wins hands down. It's just a more straight forward truck with way more fun factor.
Only back seats is my problem. But I am alone so it wouldn’t be a big problem. Ford has a V6 and it will always perform better than 4 cylinder. Long term ownership Tacoma will be better but the Winner here is ranger. Yes I would buy a Tacoma even if I like that ranger here.

Yeah baby buy that American muscle truck!
Having driven both trucks for several hundred miles I would definitely lean toward the Ford raptor. And I agree with the comment that the rear seat is basically useless in the TRD. I’ve seen the Ranger raptor go for 52 53,000 but the TRD is just crazy stupid expensive
That price alone on the Tacoma is ridiculous.
I’ve got a 2022 Tacoma trd off-road 4x4 and I can honestly say, if I were buying a new midsize truck, I’d take the ranger raptor hands down. Toyota isn’t what it used to be
Glad you mentioned the Toyota's part system as opposed to the Raptor's full-time 4x4 system.
This means any Subaru will out-traction your bad-ass TRD Pro on icy or snowy streets.
(I do wonder how torque is distributed on the Raptor. No reviewer ever explains this.)
Got my RR yesterday, no regrets
@@2011buddylee thanks, it’s great, already 1.3K miles on it 😅 aside from some software oddities here and there, only real complaint I have are the seats. I don’t like the plastic mold cutout they did below the headrest, it’s a little uncomfortable over time for my upper back.
I love how in the Tacoma, your unconfortable passengers in the back seat could switch around your precious expensive seat settings..just to get back at you for squishing them in there. 😂
Great video both trucks looked and performed awesome. For me I am a huge fan of brute power plus the Raptor is more affordable. Toyota and Dodge/RAM whatever both need to work on their pricing.
I wanted the RR but dealerships suck now days. I ended up finding my 2019 Raptor and buying it back. Its just as i left it. Still runs and functions perfectly with no issues at 77k mi.
Most reviews prefer the Baja capabilities of the Raptor over the TRD Pro. The Raptor is also far cheaper. But the TRD Pro does come with more equipment and is a hybrid. The TRD Pro is also a freaking beefcake. That truck looks SO good. If it were my money I’d take the TRD Pro, to hell with my rear passengers legroom. But I wouldn’t turn down a Raptor either (or a Bison for that matter). WOOOO we have so many great midsized trucks right now!!
Truth!
From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank you for doing away with the intro. I love your reviews and love the channel, but was getting tired of watching the intro of old car reviews with the cars in action. Well done, everyone!
I've got the raptor and It's very hard not to smile every time its driven. Absolute beast and bang for buck is spot on!
As a former owner of an F-150 Raptor G2, there is no way I am paying more money for the TRD-Pro. I would choose the Ranger Raptor even if it cost more.

I bought a 2021 tundra trd pro for MSRP a $54,995. I can’t believe the Taco’s are this expensive now! However, the MSRP went from what I paid in 2021 for a tundra trd pro to $77k MSRP in 2022. No way I could ever pay that for a taco.
Love the comparison...I had a Ranger before getting my Tacoma. Loving all the new midsize trucks coming in the market...tons of options now.
the fact that you have to climb under the tacoma to change suspension in this day and age and at that price point is mind boggling
Something that very, VERY few owners are going to do on a muddy or slushy trail.
Give me the Raptor or the Colorado ZRZ/ Canyon AT4X. I want a front locker, not some ridiculous seats. Plus, I'm not interested in the hybrid system.

Ranger Raptor is my choice, it might be the first Ford I buy.
dude, i daily drive the full size raptor and it's awesome! reliability comes down to shorter frequent oil changes; it's turbo charged so it creates more heat hence oil changes needed more often. nearly 90K on mines and no issues.
the iForce Max TRD Off-road would be a better bang for the buck vs the TRD Pro (~46k vs 65k). Same power and all. Yeah you don't get fancy shocks but you can put the price difference towards some lol
I imagine the seats play into the cost a bunch, I see that becoming an option in the future vs it being standard

I love Japanese vehicles but the ranger raptor is a beast. ❤
YESSSSS1 Just the video I've been waiting for! Love the Quality of your videos!
Good comparison, good trucks. I like both honestly
Great review! I love both trucks. But you had me at front locker. The rear seat space and lack of ability to be folded down is a big deal breaker for me.
In Q2 mid size truck sales figures. 1.tacoma 47.879/Colorado 26.901/3rd frontier 20.219/4th canyon 11.351/5th gladiator 10.489/6th ranger 9.030./7th Ridgeline 8.626. now
Colorado and frontier doing way better than expected. The ranger is super low production this year so next year it should be much more competitive
Not me.
Dude just put some bright red lip gloss on if you want to stand out❤❤❤❤
@@chriscross2209 If that's what you're into, more power to you. Not for me.
Yes, that sway bar disconnect is legit.
Raptor all the way. And I say that as a 3rd gen owner.
I put 132k on my third gen tacoma and got a nice pile of money for it when i traded it for a RR last week. Nothing but love for the third gen but i had no idea what I was missing.
@jerryrichards9107 wat did u get for trade-in? Cuz @ 132, u just broke the truck in lol
Nice, i'd opt for the one that has a transmission capable of hauling my refrigerator back home from my camping trips.
Truck camping with the new Taco? Make sure you got phone number for a Tow truck. You might need it!
With the transmission on the ranger raptor keeping you in the high might not last as long engine wear from high revs plus turbos, spooling could equate too reliability longevity in the end.
Ryan was too generous at the end towards Toyota saying that both are great trucks but he knows the better truck was and is the Raptor.
@21:19 wow, that’s the most spot-on unintentional owl impression that I’ve ever heard 😂
😂
Ranger is a far better value. Taco looks awesome, but too expensive. I'd probably go TRD off-road with a few options, a tune and upgraded suspension. I'll keep rocking my paid for '14 taco tss with upgraded suspension.
Fully loaded TRD off-road is nearing RR. It’s like 55k rn
Crazy prices.
Great review! I’m going with the ranger raptor
The raptor for me ..best bang for the buck 🍻
I would take it but the rear seats must be for kids indeed.
The problem is it looks so small that there is no way you are fitting kids and a dog back there.
This is a good video comparison. Beautifully presented 🎉

I would have to agree, and half the people complaining about the Tacoma are calling it a tundra in their confusion 😂
Those iso seats should be optional. Take up too much room
Toyota looks combative and agressive but Ranger Raptor is truck which we want. Great review. Greetings

If I had the money!!!!!! I would put it on the Ford.
Ranger all day.
Said no one ever.
@@iamthedutchbroI did.

Ford for the win in my book.
Good question. I think it’s just to force product segmentation.
With too similar products (albeit suv vs truck here), features is likely the metric to separate and up-sell vehicles
You can get the upcoming 4Runner with a rear locker, swaybar disconnect, neat suspension and all on the TRD trims but no full time 4wd, you can get full time 4wd in the limited / platinum trim but no rear locker, swaybar disconnect etc
if one wants a 4Runner WITH full time 4wd, swaybar disconnect and all that stuff....you step up to the Land Cruiser, if one wants a Land Cruiser but with a turbo v6 or eKDSS or whatever...you step up to the GX

Raptor all day
I traded in my 2021 F-150 Lariat for the 2024 Ranger Raptor that I ordered in 2023.
My mom's 2019 Subaru Ascent hits 60 in 7 seconds 😂
And hauls 7 people while towing more lol midsize trucks are kind of a joke and a one trick pony
I own the TRD Pro. It's pretty amazing. Having said that, I'm sure most comments are from folks who own neither so take with a grain of salt.
I love the TRD pro. Im pretty sure over its life it will be a better long term vehicle than the Raptor. Except for those seats. They're a wasted compromise and another example of Toyota trying to fix a problem that nobody asked them to fix
But its a hard pill when the Raptor has the superior power train and suspension system.
