I unsubbed because of the ad.
This is a small thing, but I really appreciate in your videos that the exterior shots when you are talking almost always match up with the proper time of when you were saying it inside the vehicle. For instance at 5:40 it is clear that your narration is precisely when you were saying it inside the vehicle. Most people would never notice, but for some reason it makes me smile.
Millions of people have successfully gone off-roading before Toyota offered their PRO models. Toyota's TRD Off-Road offering is more than good enough for the need of 99% of buyers.
This is the best video available for showing all the off road features of the Tacoma OR. Toyota should use this as an instructional video.
Almost as if it's an ad
My biggest issue with this version of the Tacoma is that it is the same price as the Colorado ZR2, which is vastly superior offroad.
I almost stopped watching after the price part. 54k for a small truck. 😮 I think Frontier will be more than enough.
I had a 2017 Frontier Pro-4x, Really great truck for the price. I regret selling it. The main thing I upgraded on it was projector headlights, the factory headlights were awful.
You can find TRD Off-Roads for closer to $43k. The options are what jack the prices up too high.
$55k actually 🤓
And that’s before taxes
@@SuperNova23333 $43k is correct
Frontier is good overall, but not good off-road. The wheel braking and off-road modes do nothing on that truck. The Frontier is not very capable off-road, even with a locker. There are videos on RUclips showing how the Frontier gets stuck on obstacles other trucks easily go over.
TFL and Truck King each broke their new Tacoma. The new Tundra engines are recalled. I'm leary of purchasing the new Tacoma or coming 4Runner. 🥴
I hope it doesn't break
I’ll take the Colorado ZR2 for that price 💁🏻♂️
No kidding, I stopped the video after seeing the price. Toyota is a bit confused on their truck pricing.
yeah the last TRD Offroad I bought was fully loaded for $38,500 not too many years ago
3 grand more you can get top dog ranger raptor. For the same price you can get a FX4 ranger lariat with a 2.7 twin turbo 6 cylinder also with rear lockers and 360 cameras
Weird. How did I not know they were offering the 2.7 in the ranger now? Thanks for the heads up.
Yeah...but the you have to drive Ford Ranger....and tell your friends and family you bought a Ford Ranger....and constantly have to justify why you bought a Ford Ranger....
@@Tungstenisw lol just be like hey it’s my money.
A few months back I had planned on buying a 2024 Tacoma until I sat in one. I am 6 feet 215lbs and frankly I found it quite cramped( especially below the waist). Then I went and sat in the 2024 Colorado ZR2 . It was far more comfortable. It also turns out the Tacoma is a bit of a lemon . So, now I am decided on waiting for the 2025 Colorado zr2 .
Doesn’t the plastics in the ZR2 bother you? I was very disappointed in the plastic interior pieces. Lots of creaks. Looks very cheap inside.
Excellent testing. You work these things harder than most of the other reviewers. Always enjoy your efforts. I know what it is like to do these things. LOT of time involved in the whole process. Respect.
The shots from the drone makes this video top notch.
i paid less for my 24 zr2 and i would have that over any of the tacoma offerings
From recent reports Nissan sold 20,219 Frontiers from April 24th 2024 to June 24th 2024, or about ~10,109 units per month for May and June
Chevy Colorado sold 8,967 units in June, GMC Canyon 3,784 units and the Ford Ranger 4,703 units
Toyota sold 14,929 Tacomas in the month of June 2024 alone
Really? I thought the tacoma's are piling up on dealer lots
Cause talking sh!t generates clicks.
@Reu_ag toyota is still struggling from the covid supply chains, they are one of the few manufacturers that can't really keep a lot of inventory. Their reputation is keeping them at the top, but with the recent drive train issues that might cause some inventory to start piling up
@@DarkDramon once again, clickbait... The driveline issues are completely overblown .
@@Reu_ag What you would think if you only get your data from YT videos.
Toyota needs to offer a larger fuel tank. 18.2 gallons is not enough for towing and remote areas. Even with the better fuel economy, it lost 30 to 40 miles range vs the 2023.
Reducing the fuel tank size is one way manufacturers use to increase payload. I suspect that's what Toyota did to boost their number because it's been one of the worst.
@@showmemorefunthings9208True. Toyota has always had awful payload.
Owners are getting the same range as previous gen with the smaller tank in the real world. I had a 21 offroad and averaged 220-280 miles in the city. 370 on hwy. It was horrible on gas in the city worse than my V8 GX.
I could get 330 miles in the city with my 13’ 4.0 double cab. It was on fumes by then, but I made do. A little over 400 on the hwy.
@@beexiong2995 Agree. We have a 2023 and 2024 off roads and they about the same range. Maybe a tad more on the 2024. I usually fill up at 350 miles in city.
My bro just got 24 zr2 and so incredible its the same price as a offroad tacoma
Ryan, There is nothing very mid-sized about mid-size pickups these days so I really can't understand why the back seats are so cramped. 🤨
I bought a 24 trd off road 5th gen 4Runner. It has all the same options except the disconnecting sway bar. It does have KDSS. I have no turbos. I’m extremely happy with it.
Just bought one too
It is still crazy they left off a few things that seem rather basic. No rear arm rest, No rear A/C, and NO MEMORY SEATS!!! Seriously Toyota? You add amazingly nice features like a camera mirror, cameras everywhere, and ventilated seats, but no memory seats? That ancient feature is a must for me. Dealbreaker territory.
get a limited for memory seats. who is driving your truck?
@@planoman0935 my 5 foot tall wife
Granted the TRD has some cool options like the MTS, better turning radius. But you can get a fully equipped Frontier pro4x for almost $10k less and gets only 1mpg less than this.
The current frontier is more similar to the last gen taco and is priced similarly. Not surprising. Even the last gen had mts and crawl features. Nissan has none of that. Just abls
check the MPG for a frontier. The 2024 tacoma is 21 combined 19 city and 23 hwy and that is what I get after 4000 miles. I test drove a 2023 frontier pro 4x and do not remeber the mpg being close to that.
@planoman0935 18 city, 22 highway. I test drove one on the highway and got 22 without really trying. Let's be honest...most of us would choose a reliable V6 even if it was 2 or 3 mpg worse.
@beexiong2995 that is true but when would you ever really need MTS? Albs, 4low and a rear locker is all you should ever need anyway.
@@JRs-guitars Not sure most of us would since the Tacoma sold 69,500 in first half of 2024 and Frontier sold 40,000 with huge incentives off msrp not to mention much worse value retention.
Absolutely love your videos, we watch them like a ritual because it gives us a really great mindset on what cars we are interested in buying and if they are going to meet the needs we have for them. We definitely do appreciate them and thank you Ryan for doing this for us.
For this kind of money, I will rather get a Ford F-150
Its a good thing you didn't do anything hard today. Toyota definitely don't want another youtuber to break the Tacoma. They are definitely under trouble / bad reputation and don't want another. These are everyday light duty trucks and not meant to hard offroad now. Surely Toyota can build them tough but most likely to cost $100K with pathetic economy we have right now.
The Tacoma is made in Mexico, they pay approximately $3 dollars an hour and they lowered the powertrain. Toyota is crazy.
You are 100% correct. Toyota is being very transparent about being greedy!
Toyota has been making the Tacoma in Mexico for many years. Nobody complained about older model. Did you just find out all of a sudden?
You think that's bad, look up lithium mining and refining for evs and why Americans outsource that lol 😂
@@ryanb8736 Prior generations of Tacomas were made at Toyota’s San Antonio TX plant.
@@smittysmitty481 Yes. How many years ago?
That price is insane
Love to see a list rating Vehicles abilities to do your various trails. Like the ladder.
WAY too expensive. That’s a $985/mo payment at 72mos term length for a midsize truck. $10k down brings it down to $814/mo. For a midsize truck. Insane.
You make the best videos Ryan! I know how much work goes into making them.
Agreed, this is all most will ever need......it's just way too expensive. If I'm spending mid $50k for a mid size truck....I would rather get a full size truck, or save a few and grab a Colorado ZR2.
Does anyone believe this truck has 11 inches of ground clearance running on what 31 inch tires? Wouldn't be a bad truck if it was closer to 40 grand.
I was in the market for a good, off-road truck recently and wanted to get a Tacoma TRD Pro based on previous years. Then I saw that it wasn't released yet. Bummer... but OK. Then I saw the price increase. BIG bummer... and NOT OK. Then I saw the price for a decently-optioned TRD Off-Road (and confirmed in your video). HUGE bummer. Then I started hearing the news of failures in the line-up... coupled with the failure(s) in the Tundra... and saw how Toyota responded. So I did something I never thought I'd do - I bought a Chevrolet (still kinda makes me question myself after owning nothing but Japanese vehicles since the early 2000s), a 2024 Colorado ZR2. And I love it! MUCH more capable than the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, looks better (IMO), and it is less expensive! I seriously don't understand why people are paying what they are for anything in the Tacoma line. Sorry, Toyota - big whiff on this.
FINALLLLYYYY!!! We've been waiting for this!!! You slacked on this video I will sad ☹️ but it's here now so 👍🏽 You should do one on the Base SR5 4x4 since that's the one that's been sold more than any other trim
Im getting mine this weekend, it has a roof rack and the predator steps on it already and is the bronze oxide color way, can’t wait !
really good job done - thanks a lot!
I think you can get a Tundra Crewcab with the TRD Offroad for about the same price. Yikes...
This is fully loaded with all the options possible minus the hybrid. The previous gen fully optioned was 46k. But that truck was terrible to drive and underpowered for what it is. The base offroad for this new one is 42k and the previous gen was like 38k so a little closer on price. You're paying for the new engine, transmission, and offroad tech. The old truck was ancient for sure I can't imagine paying 50k for that. Had they continued the previous gen truck inflation would have kicked it up to 50k. The tundra is a different beast. A regular doublecab not crewmax trd offroad is around 55k for the base. But because of the recall they are being marked down and rebate nearly 10k.
Yep, early this year a co-worker got a crew cab SR5 TRD off-road Tundra for 54k.
Great job on cutting the channel intro. I wasn't a fan of it and always fast-forward through it. This is the best off-road channel on YT.
awesome video as always! Does the locker come on quickly now or is it the same old thinking about it in the previous gen?
Came on quick for us.
Best review of the Tacoma offroad period!
is the ground clearance really 11 inches? for example if the lowest point is a shock mount or the rear pumpkin, are they measuring from that?
The problem is not the vector system on wheels that mimics a real locker, the real problem is you are paying for electronics at the same or higher price than real beefy lockers.
Well said!
Tacoma did fine once you found the correct MTS settings and a few scrapes and scratches are expected if you hit the trails. But I get that you didn't want to scratch up your loaner. I agree the tires are not very aggressive. My 23 Off Road has more agressive tires than my 24 off road.
thanks you for sharing.
I love Toyota BUT a turbo 4...bad automatics and even TRUCK KING had a manual fail while testing. TFL had a front diff fail while testing. The best Tacoma was gen 2 with the 4 lifre v6.
Absolutely agree about the gen 2 Taco with 4 L V6. The new Tacoma will take a few years to work the bugs out, and it's 4 cyl. sounds like a noisy sewing machine.
@@toddmanning7844 I have a 20 Tundra with the 5.7 V8. Man that engine is just crazy powerful. Very reliable as well.
Great video thanks
I think buying this would be crazy when the Ranger Raptor is only a fewK more.
But then your stuck having to drive a Ford Ranger....and justifying to your friend, family and yourself why you bought a Ford Ranger. And all the while....deep, deep, down...you wish you just bought the TACOMA so you could stop justifying and instead simply enjoy your Truck
Great review, This truck would be an off road monster if Toyota offered it in a two door version
Watch out for the transmission and differential that tend to self destruct
99% of people would be better served with a mid-level 4x4 pickup. The test track used by this channel is way more challenging than anything I've ever driven on after decades of driving logging roads in deep snow while hunting. Never once have I reached for a rear locking diff switch or crawl control in all those years...4 high has always been plenty of traction as long as the tires were good. IMO a lot of people have been sold a bill of goods by influencers, advertisers, and manufacturers into thinking spending an extra 10 thousand on unnecessary options is a great idea...it's not. Save your money and spend it on good all-terrain tires...
nathan from tfl will be proud of you for you using his method momentem
Nothing broke so far
😂
😲 The river Dried Up 🙁 It was a bad omen for grinding the bottom on dry dirt and rocks later on ....😅😉
Got my base TRD OR 6 spd for 51k CDN, which is something in the range of 38K USD. Absolutely loving the truck.
Great video and review. Do you prefer your Ranger Raptor to this Taco?
Yes. Very much.
Hint: TFL got rid of their Off-road (Berry) after they were bragging about they got it early and that front-dif crack. I can see why this vid was displayed. I guess it states that this vehicle really can go off road (w/o the freezing cold) & that crack was a fluke. Bottom line… this vehicle is way over priced gimmicky 4 popper (and that’s all of their 4th gens) is not worth it.
With the Iforce there is also the option of getting the TRD Pro wheels and tires.
I enjoy your vehicle reviews. Is your Central WA test site in the Wenas? Looks familiar.
No, we're closer to Cle Elum on the North side of I-90.
Good luck trying to find one on a lot.
I think those that go on these trails often would have probably lifted their trucks and put on MT tires. Nice to know that this OR can handle most stuff thrown at it without too much problem. I think the majority of the owners never even attempt these trails.
see if you can get nissan frontier pro4x to test.
I'm surprised it rubbed that much. Great review, thanks for having the test courses!
Is the constant tweaking and fiddling with modes necessary? Why not see what the truck does in 4 High and go from there. It would create a baseline for comparisons between models on particular slopes...
I recently saw one of these in person and was shocked at how bad the design and build quality was. Exhaust pipe hanging way out. Rear shock absorbers hanging low. Clunky, loose-fitting trim pieces, and WAY too many electrical controls. Even if it was 10K less in price, it would not be worth it.
I was going to get a trd pro but then i said i'd rather buy a brand new house and since they are the same price it was an easy pick. With markup i think the new pro's are 400k.
54,000 and at 7 percent interest rate so you’re paying around 66,000 for that!! Hell no. Payment also for 48 months 1388.89 with 2500 down
Why would anyone put 2500 down? At minimum 11k down
@@MrMikeDao
That was example that’s all guy. Don’t get all uptight dude.
@@MrMikeDao Yeah how many people put 11K down (unless they have a trade in)? People prefer zero down if they can.
Poor people shouldn't buy anything over 40k. 2500 down-payment is like nothing these days. Know your means and buy a used truck 😂
@@funnybeingmeeating at fast food chains cost 20 bucks a person now. Use to be 10 or less.
Can you do it with the Nissan Frontier Pro4X?
Yes, a similar test with the Frontier would be great!
Im surprised it made it to the top of the hill without breaking lol
I think I’d rather have a Bison or Ranger Raptor.
Love this review. Who needs the TRD Pro? Insecure posers "need" the TRD Pro to go over speed bumps at Costco and their kids' schools. Real overlanders and offroaders buy the cheaper TRD Offroad, mod it, and bang it up in the wild. That's the way it is now, and it will be the same with the 4th Gen.
Tough to compare what it's doing to tests in very different conditions right after you had cut some of those trails. The growth and compacting of a season hardens the soil a ton and makes traction far better.
Yup. That is correct. To set reset expectations we brought a Subaru Crosstrek out a couple days later. That video comes out next week.
@@drivingsports Great videos anyways though! Always enjoy your thorough approach and great footage.
I paid $28k for my CC 4x4 Frontier. This is not double the truck...
The TRD PRO and TRD Off-Road are both wants, not needs. At 54k, that a lot of want.
How do you keep your cameras clean, all that trail dust.
Lots of wipes and blowers. 😂
The SR5 comes with the same impressive 4wd system minus the locker and terrain management right? I’d imagine even the SR5 is very capable.
What I want to see is a modified Honda Acty attack or similar and see how one would do. They would need a lift and better tires but would be a fun video.
Going to pick up a mini-truck or a Toyota Hiace or Toyoace diesel. Really wish we could get something between a 25 year old Kei truck and a Maverick.
Give me a kei size or similar sized truck with a turbo 1.5l for $15k.
It looks like ATRAC got a buff with the new model. Almost Land Rover tier now.
So good.
Yeah I watched another comparo between the ranger and Colorado and taco and the taco required less effort and almost no 4lo.
14:45 loose dirt/gravel is the MTS Mode you should have used not sand
If I wanted a truck, I would definitely buy one of these. Some better tires, and it should be pretty capable!
$55,000 for a Tacoma??? 😂🤣😂🤣
I’ll keep driving my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the premium and technology plugs.
I purposefully bought the 23 because I wanted the 3.5L Naturally Aspirated V6 that is a proven, reliable and durable engine.
I’m afraid of the Turbo engines of the new generation Tacoma
Honestly I don't see a large crowd going straight to a TRD Pro considering the crazy current asked prices. The reality is that many of us would try to convince ourselves the TRD Off-Road is just good enough.
Was this truck updated with the new software meant to fix the problem TFL had with their ADD breaking?
I don't expect so. But I don't know for sure.
@@drivingsports the fix Sheldon mentioned was supposed to be a deration of some sort. I was wondering how much it would effect capability vs before the change.
Can’t be. Sheldon isn’t even sure how the updates are going to be implemented according to his comments in his latest TFL interview. He also said eta was end of summer.
@@CharlieParker-dz6fv Thanks. I missed that part in the interview.
@@CharlieParker-dz6fv I had to hedge a bit, since Toyota COULD do it with their press loaners before an official process is out there. But I think it is unlikely to turn-it around so quickly.
Is this all in Utah? Could you share the location? Thanks! :)
We have a couple private off-road courses in Washington state. This one is located outside of Ellensburg.
More stuff and options, more money and more issues to fix
Ranger Raptor gives you more everything for slightly more cost (assuming you can buy both trucks at MSRP; even this Taco is probably going to run you at least 60k at a Toyota Dealership).
Only if you want your rear axle to give out
Great pricing!
This a joke? 😂
Is this one going to be the only version that doesn’t break during the test by a reviewer?
Would you take it over a Colorado ZR2? Price is very similar.
WOW that was VERY impressive. I've been torn between this and the Ranger FX4, yes the Ranger is made in the USA, and you can actually find an FX4 in the low $40k range, but the Tacoma seems to be the better product. I bet soon enough, you will see these TRD offroads with the $43k price tag showing up when these $55k trucks do not sell so well.
I’m also between this and a Ranger XLT FX4. But part of me is debating waiting for a 4Runner TRD OR (if the price isn’t crazy which is that I’m afraid of).
@@willb6070 you and I are very much alike, my list also included a 4Runner but I am pretty sure I’ve removed it from my list. I test drove it, it’s a pig. Yes it’s super reliable, yes it’s one of the best off-road, but it is a HEAVY truck. That engine and trans combo is 15 year old tech. Acceleration was slow. I went on a 10 mile test drive and the mpg was 13.1 and I was not on it that hard. Handling was sloppy.
@@DavefromCA2023 agreed. That’s why I want to see what the new 25 4Runner is about with the new generation.
@@willb6070 problem is the price, lol I’ve already scratched the next 4Runner off my list because I bet it’ll be so much more then the current
@@DavefromCA2023 that’s what I’m afraid of too. If the price jump on the Tacoma is a sign, it will most likely be marked off my consideration list.
This is the best medium size pick up truck, and it’s not the TRD Pro with the most powerful engine, it’s a beast.
Toyota is the best. ♥️🤠
You'd be taking a gamble if you purchase a Taco or a Tundra with the issues they're having at the moment.
How much did Toyota pay you to promote the super expensive Tacoma?
They don’t pay him. Toyota won’t pay anyone.
Why does it need a flat screen tv like that’s the biggest downside same with the turbo just ruins the pistons faster. Also probably will have to replace the turbo about 5 times till the engine blows up at 100k miles
Are you crazy 53k for tacoma.
54K for a tacoma is a sin.
especially a middle of the road taco
Nice looking truck but too expensive for what you get.
nothing snaps?
How Toyota managed to price themselves out of the market is beyond me...Guess I'll just wait for a few years.
Inflation happened. Majority of people voted for it.
