so is better to use it for long trips in freeways / off-road driving? i felt that specially for boxer engines, kinda high gas consumtion for a city use
Best value is the base or premium trim and just do these upgrades yourself. Subaru is phoning it in with the TR but the platform is a good daily driver and can be fun as a reasonably affordable AWD / manual car.
“Best value” is buying a different car. 40k for 280hp is abysmal. I’ll give the VB engine the credit it’s due, but come on. 40k is slightly used mid level German car price.
Can't remember the guy's name but he has a dyno in his shop somewhere in Michigan near Detroit. He had a dyno readout for a 2020 WRX and he had a dyno readout for a 2022 WRX. The HP rating on the 2020 was close to factory rating, 265HP I think was the readout. The readout on the 22 WRX was 292HP so Subaru is underrating the 22 WRX by about 20HP. Torque numbers on the dyno were accurate for both cars but the 22 WRX's torque is available right at 2000 rpm, almost all of it.
I painted the rear bumper, and it changed everything . Bigger brakes and wider color matched fenders with coils make this car stand out above all those in its price range. It also has more aftermarket support already than any other brand. With just an intake and tune, you're pushing above everything around. Plus, STI swap trans and easy reliable 500hp with new strait con rods and bee hive valve springs. High revs with no worries. It's a sleeper for sure.

I can’t explain my love for the wrx. Maybe I’m mentally still in my 2011 wrx hothatch racing across the near entire width of Oklahoma on my way home for winter holiday.
I used to be a die hard Subaru fan. Ive owned 3 WRX's, 2 90s Imprezas including an RS and wheny wife needed a bigger car we got her into a 17 Forester XT. With that being said when it came time for me to finally buy my first brand new car a month ago i really took a hard look at what i wanted and ended up getting a Civic Type R and couldnt be happier. Subaru dropped the ball Hard with this new generation, between removing the STi and the new body style being completely fugly, it wasn't even on my radar.
On your track, I would attribute the time improvement to the brake upgrade. My 23 WRX stock pads turn to wooden boards over 70mph... The stock -.5 degree front camber is also painful.
I am the original owner of a 2007 WRX TR with 83k miles that I still daily. I would take my Hawkeye over every generation that has come out. I don't think I would ever buy another WRX. They are not the value proposition they used to be and the disappointing looks are no longer outweighed by their value and practicality. My hopes of buying a 400 HP STI were shattered when Subaru dropped it from their lineup, after creating some hype about what the new STI would be and what the rumored power numbers to expect were. Now, I am currently looking at 2021-2023 M340s because they are, in my opinion, a grown up luxury version of what the STI could have been. Subaru needs to stop their current design language and steal a designer from Mazda.
This isnt a bad looking car in the front. People make a big deal out of nothing. The rear end looks stupid. But i understand the cladding making it look cheaper. They should have gone the TRD pro tacoma route with the gloss black cladding to make it look more premium. Or give it camo style like the tundra. Something to spruce it up. But yeah the rear end looks horrible. Previous gen looks way better overall
I applaud Subaru for making a manual transmission, manual handbrake car in 2024. A huge miss is not making it a hatchback, like 90% of the community is asking for. No, Subaru, you will not lose sales of the precious Outback or Crosstrek by making it a hatchback. But even if you do, they are still buying a Subaru, whereas they might otherwise get a Golf R or GTI.
In USA, 3rd Gen WRX have 50:50 in term of sale number for sedan:hatchback but for STi 70% of its was sedan. Community is asking for it but don't actually buy one.
"Community" Yeah they would sell 100 with hatch, and 5k in the sedan. The hatch is never coming back, just give it up already. WRX going to only sedan was a good thing. The new chassis has made the car much better at handling. Now, drop a turbo into a Crosstrek, and I'd be all over that.
Finally some positivity for the WRX. Subaru has let me down for years coasting on what made the car great in the mid 2000’s. I hope that Subaru keeps trending in this direction. People like good performance cars and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t continue making them.
I still a proper STI with 300hp+ and a true DCCD AWD system, but alas Subaru has largely moved away from the "rally" theme to their new outdoorsy centric lineup with the Wilderness subbrand.
You guys spot on with WRX dead last and TR near last, mirrors C&D lightning lap playing WRX very last and also Zach from thesmokingtire saying new WRX is almost untrackable. Many WRX owners dont know why and it's because of the drivetrain. New WRX uses front open diff and rear open diff with brakepad torque vectoring straight from the Forester SUV. AWD sports cars like EVO, STI, GR Corolla, Golf R, GTR all come with front LSD, center DCCD/AYC diff, and rear LSD.
The fact they still stupidly refuse to sell it in the wagon bodystyle they DO HAVE for over a decade now, all it would take is for them to get the damn forklift to the line when Levorg/WRX Sportwagon body rolls by and put the parts in. They didnt even offer manual at all in Levorg at any point despite it being literarily plug and play... It also has no cladding. Its literarily what you want and has good looking rear end.
@@BDA0531 Doesn't really matter now that the sales for the car have absolutely tanked. Guess it really isn't all that affordable to compromise on the looks.

Also, people tend to be nicer to your face and don't want to start an argument. Many, many more people think negative of the car, especially those who would always upgrade to newer models. I never saw anyone walk up to an owner of an Aztec or PT Cruiser and tell them their car is ugly, but it is universally accepted. It’s weird to think about. I get that you don’t need more power to have fun but these cars have gotten heavier. They could at least give it like 50 more BHP. They haven’t really gained that much power since the first generation cars compared to the weight difference.

I had a 2018 WRX that was modded like crazy and so much fun, I got rid of it in 2020 when I saw Subaru was changing their tried and tested boxer for a redesigned one as I was hoping to upgrade down the line. To this day I believe it was one of the greatest choices I've made because I would have been waiting literally decades for an upgraded Subaru that never would have come into market. They do everything they can to NOT improve their cars in ways their customers actually ask for and I want nothing to do with that.
I am new car shopping right now. I can't help but feel one GIANT difference between the performance sedan/hatch is not getting enough attention. The price difference. Almost every review says "Dealer mark-ups are wrong but we aren't going to talk about that." Then never talk about it again. A Type R is going for $5,000 over sticker at all the local dealers, that is $50,000. A GR Corolla is $800/mn. I am getting a WRX , in the Limited (top trim) for $2000 under sticker AND 3.9%. No other cars' performance sedan/hatch are even close to that. It is $18,000 to $7,000 savings. And you know what I am going to buy with that savings. For $750, a Cobb AP. Then my WRX is faster than all the stock Golfs, Civics, and Corrollas and I am still $6000 less. These guys need to do a comparison with the Cobb AP. Please Please Please do a comparison. Just the Cobb AP, and you don't even need anything else. I am sure Cobb would pay for it. Subaru may not condone it (officially) but they would appreciate it because to would level the playing field on the price difference and give them huge bump in sales.
Sounds like you're just trying to validate your decision. The Type R and GRC made a name for itself in performance and thrills. It was built without any focus group, and minimum cost cutting. It's like a badge of honor to say you own one. This new WRX, well it's not an STi.

@@NetomaMusicit's not about sound or looks, it's sad that new WRX handles even worse than old ones and why it placed last place on this track test and TR placed near last. It's why VB owners only talk about making power from FA24 to go fast in straight line drag racing. Old models handled better because STI came with front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD.
I dyno tested the base VB wrx dampers and they returned pretty digressive plot which, if further exacerbated on the TR, would explain the low-speed discomfort. At lower shaft velocity, the dampers create a lot more force which aids in body control, but this curve levels off at higher velocities to better absorb curbing on track.

The new M5 hopefully gets hammered hard as it should. A fiasco.
4:55 I agree completely. I noticed that on my WRX premium, it’s a rough ride at slow speeds but feels planted and happier with spirited driving on a back road.
so is better to use it for long trips in freeways / off-road driving? i felt that specially for boxer engines, kinda high gas consumtion for a city use
Best value is the base or premium trim and just do these upgrades yourself. Subaru is phoning it in with the TR but the platform is a good daily driver and can be fun as a reasonably affordable AWD / manual car.
Did the TR has 6 speed auto gearbox?
“Best value” is buying a different car. 40k for 280hp is abysmal. I’ll give the VB engine the credit it’s due, but come on. 40k is slightly used mid level German car price.
biggest thing that hurts the DD of this thing IMO is the 22mpg avg.

Basically " I changed almost everything about the car and threw away the reliability benefits of buying a new car and now it's passable" type comment
@@atticusrussell1225 it's more so the massive time and capital commitment to turn the car into what it should've been from factory (at the very least w/ more HP). With a protune these cars end up being more reliable and fuel efficient

The center differential controller, LSD, direct connected 6 speed, and hydraulic steering is really what made the STi feel so much more race inspired than a WRX. The modern cable driven 6 speed and electronic steering feels like I’m driving a rental.
Exactly lol. They’re very capable and have the best power plant for sure, but as far as just driving goes, ESPECIALLY STOCK, any turbo EJ will feel infinitely better.

The Dark Horse is sitting with some serious company up there.
Seeing you two driving together in a main channel video is awesome - it feels so fun!
It’s funny. I dumped my 2024 Type R after only three months. I got a new 2023 WRX and love it! We all have different tastes and needs I suppose. 😄

Paint the black cladding with body color!
It would still look like shit. Just slightly better looking shit. Like shit that is fresh, and had yet to be stepped on.
I've seen dealers actually do this in a desperate attempt to sell them, still looks like ass.
Looks worse tbh
With the arches and part of the bumpers painted it does help. But now you had to spend $1500 in paint work on a new car. lol
I would definitely buy a black car with that trim 😂

....for Canadians, they consider the TR...the Outback sedan...the plasic cladding...🙄
The 9th gen Civic tail lights...meh
that STI you showed for a second looked so good.
It took this generation of WRX to make the bug eye look reasonable.
I don't have the words to describe how disappointing that is.
Even Pulsar GTI-R from 1991 also looks better than 2024 Impreza TR.

This isnt a bad looking car in the front. People make a big deal out of nothing. The rear end looks stupid. But i understand the cladding making it look cheaper. But yeah the rear end looks horrible. Previous gen looks way better overall
Let’s just be happy they don’t offer the car in stupid primer gray
Gotta love Thomas riding James, trying to get him to go deep with the WRX on track!
Nah I don't want to drive an egg
In USA, 3rd Gen WRX have 50:50 in term of sale number for sedan:hatchback but for STi 70% of its was sedan. Community is asking for it but don't actually buy one.
"Community" Yeah they would sell 100 with hatch, and 5k in the sedan. The hatch is never coming back, just give it up already. WRX going to only sedan was a good thing. The new chassis has made the car much better at handling. Now, drop a turbo into a Crosstrek, and I'd be all over that.
The base WRX is the best deal in the manual sports market right now easily.

The WRX has always come with open diffs. Only the STI got all of the upgrades. This isn’t new.
Subaru really falling behind when the competition is really doing a good job.
Man i still miss the 1990s Impreza WRX cars like 1996 Impreza WRX Version III.

It’s weird to think about. I get that you don’t need more power to have fun but these cars have gotten heavier. They could at least give it like 50 more BHP. They haven’t really gained that much power since the first generation cars compared to the weight difference.
These new wrx powerbands are so anemic, falls on its face at 4k rpms so bad, i thought the car i was driving had an issue until i drove a 2nd. Emissions ruining the WRX.

Personally, I don't care for AWD because I live in Florida and down here it is not necessary or needed, but I need to get out of my V8 manual sedan for something a bit more efficient and going to be cheaper on gas even if it means I still have to use 93 octane, but won't burn gas as fast as a V8 engine's full tank of fuel will.

As an owner of a 22 WRX all I can say is wise choice/investment.

VB WRX uses open front diff and open rear diff with brakepad torque vectoring straight from the Forester SUV.
