Couple of people were asking RE the Raptor and why it was replaced. It developed a driveline whine just after we did the towing test with the trailer dyne. We gave Ford the option of replacing the vehicle if they could get the replacement to us by that afternoon - I'll reply to this comment with the diagnosis for what was wrong (we didn't get this until after filming). This wasn't mentioned on the video, but the GWM was also delivered without a brake controller, we gave GWM the option of installing one in time for the next day and they turned it around in time for us to do the tow testing. And it was already mentioned in the video that the SsangYong had an engine light visible, which was due to an O2 sensor and we were told it wouldn't affect performance.

we tow a 3000kg trailer/caravan with a ram 1500(hemi/8speed/4wd) on an 8000 km annual trip here in canada. the trip is a mix of freeway driving and 2 lane blacktop. we do use a load equalizing hitch and sway control, both are very important especially at 100 km/h on a freeway. maximum grade we have ever seen was 18% up and down, the ram accelerated from 50 to 90 km/h up that grade, no braking required on the downhill side, just a manual downshift on the steepest section
Really loved watching this, and its great to see the 3500t towing capacity myth exposed as dangerous BS. I have been trying to explain this to the wife and this video really plainly shows why we should have a RAM for the safety margin when doing a lap.
This is honestly the most comprehensive test I've ever watched I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love how you combined both scientific testing with the trailer dyno and subjective testing with the trailer pull test. Also no other tests have ever just such a variety of vechile what's shocking is the petrols outperformed all of the desiels! People have been up in arms about the ranger raptor being petrol and it destroyed the competition even with off road tyres. The proof in the pudding is that even the jeep Gladiator which is the least tow capable vehicle on paper (NA petrol, low torque, mud tyres) and it still out performed the 4 cycle diesels. I think the wildtrack shows that HP is also important for towing not just low end torque. My only question mark is your girl economy results from the trailer or the 0-100 as no one tows at full throttle. Also the petrols are getting a better time as a result of using more fuel. So a seperate fuel economy test would be better.
Finally a proper towing test, thank you Paul and team. I really enjoyed this and the data captured is great for us who tow regularly heavy loads. I would have liked to have seen in addition to the 2.5 tonne trailer a 3.5 tonne trailer and see what vehicle can and cannot tow it safely. Maybe for next time!
i'm loving this series. i wouldn't mind seeing a SUV comparison using this format and i'd love to see a big bopper Landcruiser 300/ lexus LX vs Ram 1500 showdown as well
One thing this test has exposed is frankly how misleading the "3500kg" tow ratings are on many of these utes. The fact that so many of them can only just barely crack 90km/h with the trailer dyne hooked up and active, and struggle with the 2500kg trailer up a mild grade is concerning at best.
I think I mention in the video somewhere that a number of the utes would struggle if they were at payload towing max capacity. Tow ratings can be quite misleading.
Realistically you should never tow at max capacity, as an analogy it’s like downing 30 beers in an hour, sure you could if you really wanted too but it’s not recommended.
Well, the tow ratings mostly mean how much the chassis+suspension can carry while being safe and reliable, the power to do it only comes second. Of course a 2 liter 4 cyl won't compare to an over 3 liter v6 or v8 in terms of towing for example, but I sure hope when one buys an ute, one would know his/her needs and pick accordingly. Some who rarely tow or tow light trailers and want better fuel economy would choose the smaller engine and vice versa. The important thing is there are options for everyone.
You touched on the issue at the end of the video, we really need the same style of testing done with a 3500kg fully loaded van, with 350Kg on the ball, with full fuel in the tow vehicle and a family with a 'holiday' load of weight in the tow vehicle. An analysis of the performance of what vehicles can actually legally tow, and then actually perform safely at the max limit. This is a conversation which is missing in vehicle analysis and would help many people out. In our case, with a large van like this, the only cost-effective (for us) was the Ford Ranger Wildrak with a GVM/GCM Lovells upgrade to remain legal when towing.
For the cannon If you used sports mode for towing it would have done better in your cruise control test as it changes from being fuel efficient as a priority to speed as a priority! That's been my experience!
Excellent. A proper technical instrumented testing, thus allowing user to make their own decisions based upon data. One minor point, since the tyre type affects braking, the tyre data should have been compiled in table and shown on the screen. Once again an excellent review.
I dub thee Sir Paul, Earl Vehicle Reviewer of Melbourne. Great work, you have no idea how this towing test has answered so many questions for those of us who are in the market.
Nice video. It’s a shame we didn’t have the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 in this test. The 79 is what people will seriously consider if doing serious long distance towing. It also would have been good to be reminded of which cars developed faults in the tests.
70series will be so bad stock lol and still very pricey. Safety rating would be bad as well. Haha. I love Toyotas but would not purchase a hilux either. My 78 needed upgrades, dyno etc just to be reliable but Im touring in it, parts availability is everywhere, easy to fix with minimal electrical wiring, reliable, just the basics. Thats why I purchased one. This is the only LC I would purchase though. Will never sell my Troopy, spent too much on it 😭🤣.
@@elijahtaugata lucky you. I been waiting on my Troopy brand new from past 18 months. Got a call from dealership told me another 6 months more to wait but still they were not sure😂
hi guys, with the cannon, it needs to be in sports mode when using cruise controll for towing. in sports mode it will hold speed well while towing. i towed a caravan around australia with it. it is programmed to only apply a set level of throttle depending on what mode you have it in, so when its in sports mode it will apply much more throttle and hold the speed well. It didnt miss a beat the whole trip, we also vlogged the whole trip on our channel. great content by the way, i enjoy watching these tests.
Its amazing how many people miss this detail - pretty poor effort from Paul on that, easy to do some research. I 've had no issues in sport mode towing 2T with 5 on board, it was better than my 150 Prado.
Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully GWM will integrate a tow mode - a Sport mode is designed to hold gears for performance, a tow mode will select gears for economy and engine load. The cruise control shouldn’t drop down to 40km/h before it dials back gears - that will hopefully be a simple software change. How did you find the ride on your road trip?
@CarExpert yeh I totally agree it should have a tow mode, but sports mode does work well enough for towing in my experience so I just use that. Obviously the ride quality is not perfect, but when you consider the price point they are in, i think they perform all around quite well. Fuel economy is really good when towing too!
@CarExpert I'm thinking it would be cool to do like a performance vs cost ratio or something like that in your tests. If you can come up with a way to quantify that.
On the silverado your trailer brakes should have been working, the warning was just a setting in your trailer setup on the screen. You can set up your trailer maintenance schedule to alert of trailer maintenance. Also you should have had tow/haul mode on when performed your 3Kn test.
Amazing review, Paul! Love how you really put vehicles through their proper paces. Once thing to note, in reference to the Ram versus Silverado, I noticed the Ram only had 6715 km's on the clock, whereas the Silverado had 21,288 km's, which probably accounts for some of the niggles you may have had and I hope you took that into account. I may live in Australia, but I'm an American, and As a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy man, I may be a bit biased, but oh well...
Great review guys some great thought went into the testing process. The conclusion seems strange that the Hilux finished higher in the average of all of your tests than the Isuzu/BT50 and yet you gave the best 4 cylinder to them just unclear on that
2500kg towing gives a pretty good indication of ability, with a family in the car and some gear in the tub most of those 3500kg towing utes will be maxed out at 2800-3000kg anyway except for the Ram and Silverado.
I would be interested to see the difference between a 5-7 year old version of each Ute compared to their newer version. For people who are at the end of lease and looking to update
@@patrioticpengu1n. There’s a big reason y it would be difficult to find all factory stock vehicles after a 1 year period. For the typical person that buys them. Drives to school, shops, work & odd 750kg towing. Stock dual cab is fine & mostly overkill…. Anything above that ie. work ute, off road, off road camping & the grey nomads. All need modification. Anything from a change of tyres to a full setup.
Great video. I have a Navara and agree it is wowefull at towing. I have since spent money on an intercooler and tune, as well as suspension upgrade and it is much much better, especially going up hills.

@@CarExpertAus Was such a good job was easy to sit thought it all, in fact went though parts again. Ill admit the conclusion caught me a bit of guard. Like the ending of 6 sense. After seeing how many of those UTEs cant get to a 100, really struggling to actually, well, pull their weight, I thought best tow truck would be the wildtrack. Looked and sounded like it handled it pretty effortless and the fuel consumption kinda backs it up, it was practically the lightest on fuel if you exclude the trucks that couldn't get to a 100. Well actually it was just behind the BT50 where others like the raptor used more than 30% fuel (Quick guess I didnt calculate) and was pretty noisy. At todays fuel prices (Diesel and Petrol) that extra 30% or more for the other big trucks is a ton of money. Anyway again great vid. I really enjoyed it. Shared it with heaps of others that is looking to buy a UTE soon.
I'm truly amazed at how good the fuel economy is from the yank tanks. 10-11LPH unladen is incredible and is on par with a diesel 200 series especially considering they are big n/a v8 petrols in big bulky cars. Interesting to see that the raptor being a lighter vehicle with an engine half the size uses just as much fuel aswell. But that is to be expected of v6's they just aren't a good design unless over engineered in an exotic
@@CarExpertAus we tow heavy 5th wheels ,tow haulers 15,000 lbs or more, my airstream is 6200 lbs ,890lb hitch I use a hd pickup, don't trust the manufaure tow ratings, add 4 people in the truck, 4 bikes 2 dogs, the tow rating goes down fast it also comes down to where are you towing ? you have more flat lands then we do in the U.S ,we do have some very high mtn passes to go over, good review
I Drive a Silverado and get high 9’s open freeway. I have never seen 36lts towing 3t van or 3 bay horse float. Maybe 25lts but get it flat Hwy down to 18’s. Had a LC79 and could not tow up hill and use more full empty or towing. The yanks make great highways eaters towing or not.
This is great. Thanks CarExpert team! I also wish to see the 7 seater suv towing comparison, e.g. LC300, Prado, LR Defender, Ford Everest, Jeep Grand Cherokee, LDV D90 etc..
The funny thing is that in the USA, those aren’t even the biggest trucks. The HD version of the ram can tow over 13,600 KG. Pretty intense lol. You can get it with a 6 cylinder diesel with 400 hp and 1,000 lb ft of torque
The highest tow rating for a pickup right now is the F450 pickup with the high output v8 diesel (500 hp, 1200 lb ft) and the max tow package. It is rated at 40,000lbs/18,140 kg).
Nice work. One of the best towing test I have seen. The only thing that would make it even better is putting real world weights in each ute. I'm talking about putting weights into the duel cab seats that is equivalent to a family of four along for the ride as well as some gear for a family of four in the back tub. That would be a real relevant test.
You can say the same about all the utes really. Put dump pipes on the raptor it will net another 30-50kw once tune is available, ram with pipes wakes them up, the Isuzu has massive gains with a tune only, same as the wild trak. Cannon, Navara and triton are basically giant shit boxes as this test series proved.
Different vehicle but I had a 6.0 liter SS Holden Ute a while back , a set of headers / extractors alone added 35kws at the wheels on a Dyno, yes the Chevy responds very well to simple mods & actually improved fuel economy by .75 - 1 liter per hundred.
I wished you had the ecodiesel Gladiator in Australia. That thing is an absolute powerhouse. Would be interesting to see how it would stack up against the others.
Agree, they even get the hemi V8 in America Jeep don't give a damn about Australia anymore. Well, when you think about it, most Australians don't give a damn about Jeeps anymore.
Love my ecodiesel Gladiator Rubicon. The payload rating is way derated, I haul 1600lbs of water in the bed regularly, only way you really notice it is when the water starts sloshing around. Otherwise, it doesn’t even take all the rake out. I haven’t touched anything in the suspension. The diesel throttle is so smooth too, you could drive it with 1 toe on the pedal.
Seeing as out petrol prices aren’t as cheap as the US and some rural areas still only sell diesel in places I’ve been you think it’d be more logical to send the diesel version here not the petrol 🤷🏻♂️
@@lk9456 Jeep doesn't give a damn anout Australia, they are only still selling RHD Jeeps because of a deal with Alfa Romeo I think and some dealership scandal. Jeep wanted to become LHD only a few times. They sell more Jeeps a day in the US than they sell Jeeps a year in Australia.
Loved this comparison mate, for the life of me I still Can’t understand how people still buy the hilux. Can’t get to 100km/h while towing the rear camera is terrible and analog speedo still for a car that price. Wildtrak and Isuzu are way better in my opinion
Thank you as I really appreciate your great job done and comprehensive testing! You managed to answer about all the questions I have. Brand new UTEs test is also about how they compare to the trusty old friends. So, special thanks for including the Gladiator as this gave me an idea how old petrol V6 might compete. The only point I would prefer to see is how old big diesel American trucks will perform under such test. I am talking about Ford F-250, F-350, RAM-2500, RAM-3500 etc. here. You might have also some other towing trucks in mind like 4x4 flatbeads or cabins (Iveco daily, Mitsubishi canter or similar). If you manage to extend this testing for such truck it would be just brilliant! Thank you and keep doing great things!
I'm from Sri lanka. I love Navara. it gives good off road preformance and I know the comfortable of nissan. I'm still using Navara D40 2010 it good car. I love your videos.
Great review process by the team. A lot to be said for the misconception of OEM tow ratings. More so given there wouldn't be too many 'unmodified' dual cabs with just one occupant towing 2.5t + vans. Proves that milk and juice are the only things that should come in 2ltr (or thereabouts). When it comes to doing work, there is no substiture for cubic inches.
The BS tow ratings is why North America adopted SAE J2807 starting in the 2013 model year. One of the requirements is that the vehicle be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 30 seconds (35 for DRW) when pulling a trailer that weighs the maximum tow rating.

Awesome video Paul (+ Car Expert team). You guys should do an on road & off road, all-terrain tyre test with the Raptor. That would be viewing gold. Keep up the good work guys, love the content.
As always, a fantastic video Paul. I'm in the market for a new ute for my company vehicle that will also tow a 3t caravan with the family, so this was exactly what I was after. Will have to talk to the accountant and see if the budget will stretch to a V6 Ranger or maybe wait for the new Amarok. Will be waiting for your comparison video between those two. Cheers mate
Towing 3.5T in a empty ute is even worse (tail wagging the dog) but should never be overloaded. No mis size ute should be allowed to tow 3.5T it's insane.
Good adequate trailer braking system and driving to the road conditions is the key.. Speed is the killer. Potentially, anything over 3t ATM should be limited to 90klms. Inexperienced holiday makers buying big vans that have never potentially towed any more that standard box trailer is another big problem on accident statistics. BTW I thought one shound not be using cruise control while towing.. Good review
@@jb243wp I agree with what are saying, but not on the cruise control. I think it it helps safety, set a comfortable safe speed and concentrate on driving
@georgesimmons If you actually read the cruise control operations in "most" owners' manuals, it will "most" likely state, DO NOT use cruise control while towing a trailer.. My 200 series has this in big capital letters on pages 295 WARNING ⚠️ Situations UNSUITABLE for cruise control " When towing a trailer or during emergency towing? Guess there is a reason for this? Check your owners manual, not many people actually read it. You also might find that if you have any kind of accident while towing whilst in cruise control with your owner's manual listing it as a warning, you will not be covered by any insurance at all. I regularly tow between 3.2 & 3.4t. I would never consider using cruise control towing heavyloads, IMO, the driver should always have full control while towing any hitched load. Its just something to keep in mind, good idea to check your owners manual.
Thanks Paul. That was a great towing test video. Can you do one with large 4WD's with 3.5T loaded in trailer as these wagons are used in real world applications all across Australia? Keep up the good work.
This is wonderful testing, now if you guys could turn around and test everyone of these with after market Flat tray's, with many of them are given make overs with tray's and canopy's for off road touring, after all this is what happens in Australia once many people get into 4x4 or touring Australia, we see them all over RUclips, never placed side by side in performance testing in the way you guys do it, love what you do. Sure im not the only person thinking the same here.
Please do this test again with the new generation of utes. Please also include the HD offerings Silverado 2500 and Ram 2500 just to show how easy towing can be.
I've always felt that the Isuzu/Mazda twins were secretly the best dual cab utes, knowing full well of their shortcomings going into this video series, particularly compared to the brand new Ranger/Amarok twins. I didn't expect D-Max and BT-50 to actually _win_ on towing capability in the 4cyl category though! But I guess it makes sense. And conversely, the GWM's poor showing really surprised me! By either token it makes me wonder how the 4cyl Ranger and the LDV would have performed in this test. No shock that the V6 diesel Wildtrak did so awesomely though; the V6 Wildtrak is truly an awesome bit of kit. I agree, some of the competitors need to look into 6 cylinder engines or some other way to match the V6 Ranger. After all, more and more Australians are buying dual cabs not just for work but for adventure and for towing, so there's more of a market than ever for that capability. I definitely want to see more full-time 4WD systems in future utes too. We've seen time and time again just how awesome full-time 4WD is in the Ranger, Triton, etc. As we move into a more electrified era and with Toyota and Mitsubishi allegedly looking at hybrid powertrains for the next generations of Hilux and Triton, I wonder how they're gonna square up. I'm all for battery electric utes too, but there's a ton of potential in hybrid for the needs of the typical Australian dual cab owner, and I think anyone who does a lot of towing is gonna feel more confident in hybrid than electric. - (I am aware of the hybrid that's in the Toyota Tundra and it seems very impressive, but admittedly I'm not quite as well researched on American market trucks.)
Oh and, it's definitely no wonder that Ram Trucks have been steadily rising in popularity in Australia. The big trucks very much operate in a totally different category in our market - they kind of sit more along the lines of like the Toyota Land Cruiser 300-series. And I certainly see plenty of RAMs around where I am! I live in a rural area (or rural-ish anyway), so lotta people likely towing boats and caravans or just needing a more comfortable long-distance hauler. It's easy to see why they've gained a following here. It'll be interesting to see how Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra are received when they finally make it down unda. Poor showing from Chevrolet though, damn! What's going on there? I'd certainly hope that the brand new Silverado, should we get it here, would stack up better than that.
@@trickster8635 IMO the Toyota Hilux totally deserves its popularity. It did admirably in the towing test, and totally ate up the off-roading test like it was nothing! That's more than most pick-ups on the market can say. CarExpert came to some weird conclusions at the end of the videos/articles, but the data definitely shows how great the Hilux is.

I know you mentioned that you didn't have a 2.0L Bi-Turbo Ranger available, but this is a real shame tbh. It would have made a lot more sense than having a BT and a D-Max with the same engine and drivetrain package.
I don't like utes or towing but im still here watching as i know its important to many.
Best selling segment in Oz!
The work done in this video 🤯🤯🤯
This actually worth millions of views
Brilliant comparison! Honest and comprehensive. The Hilux has held up well.
Looking forward to my Ranger Platinum 😁
Well done, not a person that tows anything but the content here is very informative.
Tuning in from the state of Idaho in the US and awaiting the upcoming 2024 Ranger for the US. Love this channel!
I dub thee Sir Paul, Earl Vehicle Reviewer of Melbourne. Great work, you have no idea how this towing test has answered so many questions for those of us who are in the market.
🙌🙌
Agree 100% RAM 1500 ticks all the boxes for me followed by the Wildtrack, if not for heavy towing it would be RAM then Raptor
Nice video. It’s a shame we didn’t have the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 in this test. The 79 is what people will seriously consider if doing serious long distance towing. It also would have been good to be reminded of which cars developed faults in the tests.
All other ute are automatic trans. Why would you handicap the 79 from the get go, competing with a manual gearbox?
A stock 79 can't pull the skin off a custard, had to put mine in low4 to pull my boat out at the ramp
@@jb243wp Be honest, you never owned one, haven’t driven one and can’t afford one.
hi guys, with the cannon, it needs to be in sports mode when using cruise controll for towing. in sports mode it will hold speed well while towing. i towed a caravan around australia with it. it is programmed to only apply a set level of throttle depending on what mode you have it in, so when its in sports mode it will apply much more throttle and hold the speed well. It didnt miss a beat the whole trip, we also vlogged the whole trip on our channel. great content by the way, i enjoy watching these tests.
Its amazing how many people miss this detail - pretty poor effort from Paul on that, easy to do some research. I 've had no issues in sport mode towing 2T with 5 on board, it was better than my 150 Prado.
instead it just changes gears constantly, I've given up using cruise control when towing with mine
Would love to see these tests completed with the Medium/Large SUV range.
yes put at least 4 inside the wagon and few hundred lbs of cargo ....a real word test
Also love how the ram and chev was faster to 100 with the load attached than some were empty. Goes to show just how poor some of these utes perform.
The conclusion seems strange that the Hilux finished higher in the average of all of your tests than the Isuzu/BT50 and yet you gave the best 4 cylinder to them just unclear on that
THE VIDEO WE NEEDED!

Oii i watch your videos lol
That was by far the best video on towing with Utes I’ve watched, top job 👍

My pleasure, you do an awesome job
2500kg towing gives a pretty good indication of ability, with a family in the car and some gear in the tub most of those 3500kg towing utes will be maxed out at 2800-3000kg anyway except for the Ram and Silverado.
yeah, I think lower than the 2800kg for sure.
All the work that’s gone into making this content for us viewers is outstanding a big hats off 🎉.
Thank you 🙌
should have the GWM cannon X in sport mode towing as it tows better in sport
I would be interested to see the difference between a 5-7 year old version of each Ute compared to their newer version. For people who are at the end of lease and looking to update
Would be tricky to source factory condition samples of vehicles
@@patrioticpengu1n. There’s a big reason y it would be difficult to find all factory stock vehicles after a 1 year period. For the typical person that buys them. Drives to school, shops, work & odd 750kg towing. Stock dual cab is fine & mostly overkill…. Anything above that ie. work ute, off road, off road camping & the grey nomads. All need modification. Anything from a change of tyres to a full setup.
Great effort Paul. Answered a few question I had as I'm looking at towing a caravan of up to 3500kg. Great results and well informed. Cheers
Nissan patrol or better yet an American truck like the ram 1500
Would love to see the 4 cylinder Bi Turbo Ranger put thru its paces on your reviews. Awesome review as always.
It's ok !
Great rigorous review. It was so intense that last night I dreamed of doing all comparisons again myself. Result was same😂
Toyota Hilux selling for a reason and it was impressive in your review as well
It’s a great all rounder!
Great video. I have a Navara and agree it is wowefull at towing. I have since spent money on an intercooler and tune, as well as suspension upgrade and it is much much better, especially going up hills.
Livin'on the edge, hey? How long will it live on the edge?
How do you find it goes with the tune? Mine gets hot towing now, but without the tune it’s absolutely useless up hills.
@@trickster8635 mines been tuned to 190kw 600trq, exhaust/intake/ tune package $3000. she’s 0-100 like 8 seconds now and pulls very easy. Been 2 years now and engine is in great condition still.
Great video to show how they do under load. Will be useful to help people decide what to buy. Clearly lots of effort put in here. Well done.

Yep the American trucks pleasantly surprised us.
Rubbish! It's still 3 litres vs 6.2 litres, regardless of cylinder count.
I asked for this 2 days ago, amazing how it all come together so quick 😅
At your service!
This is great. Thanks CarExpert team! I also wish to see the 7 seater suv towing comparison, e.g. LC300, Prado, LR Defender, Ford Everest, Jeep Grand Cherokee, LDV D90 etc..
Yes please!!
@@tang7334 yes with 4-6 people in side the wagon 200-300 lbs of cargo
add 4-6 people in side the wagon 300-lbs of cargo than see
The funny thing is that in the USA, those aren’t even the biggest trucks.
That would be a real relevant test.
yes also a full tank of fuel
Too hard. They'd have to adjust the trailer mass every test, or be over GCM. But it would be interesting to see the max mass each could tow with GVM.
The Silverado 6.2 engine is a beast if you open the exhaust. If you put the catback exhaust on, it will increase HP as much as 20-30 HP.
@@commonsense-grs Jeep doesn't need the Australian market. They sell enough vehicles in North America so they don't care.
Would be interesting to see the 2500's involved as well.

Hills won’t be an issue 😂
Loved this comparison mate, for the life of me I still
Can’t understand how people still buy the hilux. Can’t get to 100km/h while towing the rear camera is terrible and analog speedo still for a car that price. Wildtrak and Isuzu are way better in my opinion
As always a great Comprehensive review. Hats off to you and your team! Keep up the amazing work!!
Thanks mate!
Great video and attention to detail as usual.Great work Paul and crew.🛻
Our pleasure!
The Wildtrak is the pick of the bunch, hands down. Well done Ford, well done💙👍🏻 Love from South Africa, where the Ranger is build
I thought our rangers are built in Thailand. The raptor definitely is.
@@sirpalee yes, but one of the biggest Ranger/Everest / Amarok assembly plants is Silverton and across the road a new plant specifically for chassis manufacturing in Pretoria, South Africa. Plus the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth. Most of Europe is supplied from here.

Best reviews.. keep up the good work and it was wonderful to see you in person few weeks back ..
Very detailed and well explained .
It would be interesting to see folks from the Australia test drive the South African built Navara, unlike the one in the Aussie market. Our Navara's make use of the older YD25 engine, which has been tuned to meet modern day performance and emissions.
I think you need to put the GWM on Sport mode when Towing..
I think it needs to loose some weight!
This comparison is really helpful. It would be great if you can do a new one for 2024 and add in the LDV and new triton.
Awesome video Paul (+ Car Expert team). You guys should do an on road & off road, all-terrain tyre test with the Raptor. That would be viewing gold. Keep up the good work guys, love the content.

When you find a ute that can tow 3.5Tonne AND have the family on board - let us all know, because at the moment, there is no such beast!
Some of these utes are allowed to tow up to 3.5T and have 600 to 700kg in the car as well, now that is scary.
Towing 3.5T in a empty ute is even worse (tail wagging the dog) but should never be overloaded. No mis size ute should be allowed to tow 3.5T it's insane.
@@sailingcitrinesunset4065 Agree 100%, but seeing what comes into my little tourist town, they are loaded to the hilt.
@georgesimmons
If you actually read the cruise control operations in "most" owners' manuals, it will "most" likely state, DO NOT use cruise control while towing a trailer..
My 200 series has this in big capital letters on pages 295 WARNING ⚠️
Situations UNSUITABLE for cruise control
" When towing a trailer or during emergency towing?
Guess there is a reason for this?
Check your owners manual, not many people actually read it.
You also might find that if you have any kind of accident while towing whilst in cruise control with your owner's manual listing it as a warning, you will not be covered by any insurance at all.
I regularly tow between 3.2 & 3.4t.
I would never consider using cruise control towing heavyloads, IMO, the driver should always have full control while towing any hitched load.
Its just something to keep in mind, good idea to check your owners manual.
Loving these new angles on reviews. Don't tow much but fascinating results regardless.
Oh wow, lot of stats, lots of work. Thanks for making the video, i am watching for free( just giving my time)
Thanks Paul. That was a great towing test video. Can you do one with large 4WD's with 3.5T loaded in trailer as these wagons are used in real world applications all across Australia? Keep up the good work.
Only a small percentage of ute owners actually tow up to 3.5t, so the test is probably more relevant to 95% of people towing.
This is bloody increadible mate. Good work!
Thanks!
Phenomenal video as always. Learnt alot. high end testing
The gwm cannon
* It’s torque on demand not permanent awd in normal and sport.
* Towing would have done better and been more responsive in sport mode.
To be honest I think there is something wrong with that Navara, plus the fact it had huge tyres for off road, not towing.
great work paul and team what a mission that would have been. really wish the T60 was in there though.
Nice work Paul 👌 keep up the great content team!
I'm glued to this show... excellent stuff team
Please do this test again with the new generation of utes.
Please also include the HD offerings
Silverado 2500 and Ram 2500 just to show how easy towing can be.
Confused I am. I thought the Toyota was the best performing 4 cylinder????
@@trickster8635 IMO the Toyota Hilux totally deserves its popularity. It did admirably in the towing test, and totally ate up the off-roading test like it was nothing! That's more than most pick-ups on the market can say.
CarExpert came to some weird conclusions at the end of the videos/articles, but the data definitely shows how great the Hilux is.

It's hard to compare a $65k ranger with a $130k ram. Keep up the good reviews.

Turn the Navara into the sport mode or tow mode. The mode selection is for this!!
I've had my XLT NG V6 Ranger for about 6 weeks and love it. Tows my 3.1 T off road van no worries, and uses less fuel than my previous gas guzzling Y62 Patrol. The rear springs n shocks definitely need upgrading for towing. I have fitted airbags, and only have to run 20 psi to level the car up.
Another quality review Paul.
Of course it would. Diesel v petrol!

I know you mentioned that you didn't have a 2.0L Bi-Turbo Ranger available, but this is a real shame tbh. It would have made a lot more sense than having a BT and a D-Max with the same engine and drivetrain package. The 2.0 Ranger's towing capability and performance is usually a hot topic of discussion on various forums online.
