I would choose the Defender just because there is a beautiful girl at my local dealer, and I know that Land Rover ownership means I will be able to see her every week when I am in for mechanical repairs and the fixing of various electrical problems.
Loved how Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero sport and Nissan Patrol performed well in their own category and won. Makes me proud and happy owning a Pajero Sport for 3 years.
Excellent choice of winner CarExpert. The Nissan Patrol deserves so much more recognition and is so underrated for no reason. What a beast of an offroader and NA V8 power! One day I'll own one

A number of 2wd nufties were ahead of us causing pileup carnage!! Love what you are all doing!! Cheers, Al.
The Prado performed like the Fortuner when you locked the centre diff because the fortuner is always locked between the front and rear axles when in 4WD. You are essentially punishing the Prado for having a full time 4WD system for safety on the road. Toyota clearly tells you to lock the centre diff for off-road conditions so it is basically pretty silly to criticise it for your failure to use it properly. Otherwise it was a an interesting test.
@@kichaa13 I debate the use of the word terrible. It is not meant to be used in such off-road conditions without locking the centre diff. When he did lock it the system worked as it should. I don’t know if the LC 300 and Patrol lock the centre diffs automatically in the mud and snow settings he used on the test but no doubt the newer system in the LC 300 and the older one in the Y62 Patrol are a bit better than the one in the Prado. But used properly the Prado system is very effective.

@@HumphFree my view applies equally to all vehicles with permanent 4WD as an option. They were all put at an illogical disadvantage to the vehicles with only part time 4WD because the latter never have a differential action between the front and rear axles. So, the traction control on all the vehicles with only part time 4WD were only required to deal with cross axle slip whereas all the vehicles with permanent 4WD had to deal with front to rear and cross axle slip. This is a huge difference when you consider that without locking the centre diff all the torque wants to go to only 1 wheel as opposed through 2. If the vehicle doesn’t offer the choice to lock the centre diff, fine, that is what you are given to work with. But when the manufacturer provides the option to lock it and recommends you do but you simply don’t push the button, it is being unfair. You may as well say the cars with part time 4WD should stay in 2WD because that is how they come from the showroom. At the end of the day the unlocked 4WD option on those vehicles is simply there for enhanced stability on sealed roads, not for off-road conditions.

@@HotSneks I think the new engine is gonna be really good. It´s in the same family as the VR38 which is probably the best V6 engine of all time and one of the best engines of all time. An engineering masterpiece. I think Nissan knows exactly what their doing and this new engine is not gonna dissapoint. And the Infinity QX80 interior and exterior is MUCH better than the LX600. I have no doubt the Patrol is gonna look better than the LC300 in both exterior and interior, have a fantastic engine and be very capable off road. I dont know too much about the new 9-speed transmission.
We decided on the Fortuner, fantastic 4x4 straight off the show room floor. We added some good A/T’s and it will pretty much go most places. The 2.8 feels much more punchy than the PAJ and MUX too on the test drive too, almost 30k travelled and very happy with it so far!
For the Pajero Sport/Triton, mud mode allows for a fair bit of slip. The most reactive to braking slipping tires would be rock mode, which has the least slip out of the off road modes. I bet it would've performed better in rock mode than in mud mode considering the mud wasn't all that thick to benefit wheelspin.
I like that you have standardized the different tests of these vehicles on very light off road conditions. This is the best way to showcase these vehicle's true capabilities and accurately make comparisons.

Fortuner is old-school, It is non-comfortable and based on Hilux truck and absolutely nothing to do with Prado. Only part-time, has rear lock, doesn't have smart systems and I think it is cheapest car ever.
Great to see Pajero Sport & Nissan Patrol perform so well as they are both old platforms now & are souch cheaper than the competition & have proven reliability as they have been around for a while , Prado was disappointing but i think with Diff lock engaged on the moguls it would have been fine , but the others performed fine without it 👍
Feedback from Kenya. Fantastic work, Paul and the rest of the CarExpert Team. The Pejero Sport is value for the dollar and and excellent choice for 4 cylinder category. Kudos.
Great work Paul Loved the tow test I'm all for the NA car, I've had a V6 NA which never disappointed and wouldn't change it for a diesel. Have had diesels and do not like them at all, I might be different in my decision but was able to overtake with gaining speed which I couldn't do in my diesels owned. Moved to the mighty V8 Patrol now and can't beat it bang for buck love it and tows with ease
The Defender has the best traction control, ground clearance, approach and depature angles, and a wading depth of 900 mm, best in class. I think the traction control system should be judged on how many times the car spins the wheel, the better systems have less wheel spin.
And that also next time they should make sure to use the 'gravel/snow/grass' setting instead of 'mud and ruts' for the shale/gravel hill (Not just the defender but all cars tested)
@yslee1401 The new defender has been out since 2019. It's not as bad as the previous landrover models. While all modern cars have their share of problems with the electronics and sesnors, the engine is in a house built by JLR, and it's been very reliable. Also, the ZF transmission is bulletproof.

Super impressive comparison. I love these videos. I knew Pajero has a great performance despite friends of mine say Pajero is not a very capable 4wd. Nissan patrol is out of the league, quite old stile but the best performance off road. The defender is so beautiful and capable. Thanks Paul for the amazing video. 👏
Your friends need to learn a thing or two. Pajeros have this odd stigma that they are not "a real 4WD" - take one off road and they show up alot more expensive cars. Brilliant 4WD system
Hi mate, I’ve just come across your videos and I’m loving them. Your honesty, non bias and explanation of everything you do are a joy to watch. Keep them coming guys.
Thanks. I learned a few techniques from you. Stop, engage and drive. I’ve done 250,000 plus on my TLC. Covered around 200,000 plus Miles (US) in quarter century. Changed timing belt twice, replaced fuse box. Grounding contact accumulated rust and staring was only possible after a sincere prayer. Did not change plugs, except air filter, oil filter, fuel filter. Routine maintenance performed at Dealer.
It’s funny that the Y62 Patrol has been overlooked for the last 13 years with the LC seemingly always winning this type of comparisons but now , all of a sudden, it’s a beast and the best at what it has always done. Go figure. Goes to show it’s been under rated and overlooked all these years.
Honestly I think most buyers didn't overlook it though, it sold well worldwide. Furthermore, it gathered tons of very positive reviews since it was launched, especially after the MSRP drop.
@@lifeisamazing9980wtf, it's literally the complete opposite, modern diesels are very unreliable and hate being revved which cooks them in the dunes. I can't think of a single petrol in the last 30 years that is less reliable than it's diesel counterpart of any make
The Pajero with the super select was always going to do well. I know most really don't like the Mitsi's but I'd take a Pajero any day over the rest of the field for it's price and reliability. Especially the Ford/JEEPs as they are junk

Hey Paul! Some feedback on the flairing with the Mitsubishi, it's actually going through the gears, unless you are manually selecting the gears, as thr wheel spin increases, the gears will change. Mud mode does that as wheel slip is necessary to get out of bogs. Perhaps try gravel or sand mode next time 😊 from experience
@@hardergamer Conspiracy theorists abound, but if you really think he fudges things, take a look at how the Ford rubbish fares on these tests - he loves his POS Ford so much he would hide their total failure. So you're wrong, mate. And where were you at your school English classes? He did not tape a break, whatever that is, and he also did not tap a brake.
Just as I expected, the off-road test is where its at. Like the ute test, one of the most sensible tests ever done with the only difference is the awarding part here is better & definitely well thought-out. Not suprised with the Pajero Sport, it really performed the best out of other 4-cyl here just like the Triton, if only you guys considered how it performed better than the better-equipped Navara that time. The Fortuner clearly is the closest contender but wasn't as effortless despite the lesser wheelspin(Super Select really does that to get more traction btw hehe). Suprised how the Patrol did but a well-deserved win tbh. Goes to show that despite the age, like the Mitsubishi, it is still the absolute performer 👌🏼
I think the wheelspin has something to do with the off road mode settings on why the Pajero Sport slipped quite a bit. The mud mode intentionally allows slip since that helps in thick mud, while rock and gravel mode is much more reactive in preventing wheelspin. In the given situations, I think rock mode or gravel mode would've been the more ideal modes for the traction control. Sand is also similar to mud but holds a lower gear to have more torque to the wheels and allows a degree of wheelspin, so also not ideal here.
The Patrol was a real surprise, in North America it's generally regarded as an overgrown mall crawler (it's sold as the Nissan Armada here), absolute beast of an engine, but with a nasty habit of melting down its catalysts. Though most NA market examples are also sold without the rear locker and with 21in wheels and rubber band tires.
@@faithbuenavista1441 both were automatics and weren't driven in manual mode, but how come the Mitsubishi's transmission was able to help the ute climb easier despite the less ground clearance and highway terrain tires vs the all terrain ones in the Nissan? This is as basic as it could get, even majority here noticed it too 😉
I personally would choose the Mitsubishi if I were shopping the 4cyl segment, it has the best exterior look (imo) and Mitsubishi is known to make good diesel engines since they were the number 1 diesel engine manufacturer in Japan at one point before their multiple incidents which caused a decline in sales for some time.
Very good video for comparison of big SUV's. For the lx 570 I think it could climb the loose hill if it had better tyres with crawl control. That Nissan patrol is a beast!
@@oriondoublecrossed Or better yet, Duratracs or KO2s on 18in wheels. Dubs don't belong on off road vehicles, neither do tires with less than 65% aspect ratio. Don't encourage the proliferation of the steam roller wheels and rubber band tires on lifted trucks that are oh so popular in red state America haha.
@@mrvwbug4423 yeah those wheels look silly. But 295/60/20 are more than enough on offroad because their sidewall is as tall as 265/65/18. You will have width + sidewall. People tend to go for wrong wheels for their truck which kills the ride.
Your test is giving a new view on these cars, very good to have some objective testing irrespective of the tires. Well done. Quite brave in a Toyota world.
In my experience with air suspension, I’ve learnt to only raise the car to max height if I really need the clearance because it comes at the cost of articulation. You get the most wheel travel in one of the middle settings and that explains why the defender made had more traction during the last run.
Yes. You never use off-road height except to clear an obstacle. Misuse of it actually makes the vehicle perform worse. Defender also had slippery mud caked tyres on the first 2 attempts and once it was cleared - it walked up.
Yes good point ! I think the Land Rove climbs more easiest with the good height and with the good drive mode. Maybe with the climb intelligent cruise too (it's less funny). With Land Rover the mode is really important. The different Terrain Response modes radically change the approach to different surfaces.
Glad to see the Pajero Sport up there. I’ve owned mine for a little over 9 months now, and it’s honestly such a great car. I’ve surprised a few people in big modified rigs out on some moderate tracks. Even if the Fortuner comes pretty close in the off-road test, the fact you can drive in 4H on sealed surfaces in Pajero, and that it’s several thousand $ cheaper makes it a great deal! Deserves to be much higher in the sales charts.
Not really, I mean it's great off road but thats about it. It's a pretty bland offering otherwise to be fair. It didn't perform particularly well in either the performance or towing testing they did.
@@jackfieldsjack1061 Last time they won was 16 years ago... recent winner is the Hilux. Although these cars don't have much to do with production cars.

Ive owned multiple hilux and Patrols , and im quite impressed with the over all package that is SsangYong Rexton. The name isnt so popular in Australia but if you do the research about how reliable they are and look at how far Hyundai have come in the last 30 years it really starts to make sense.
@@sanchaynarain3532 Toyota will differentiate the Prado from the Lexus GX by engine, I am expecting. Otherwise the Prado will canabalise Lexus GX sales.
The hill descent control on the Pajero Sport can be turned on when the vehicle is rolling down a hill. It will just maintain the speed at which it is turned on. Although you cannot use cruise control to change the speed, you can use the brake and acclerator to modify the descent speed. Overall, it's a very good system.
The first Defender round was also perfect. No crazy stupid wheel spinning and the only reason for a couple of attempts on the 45% was the tyres were caked with mud the first 2 tries so they were slicks. Then it just walked up.
At the rexton you were complaining the diff locks automatically and you want to control the diffs manually. And when you had that feature on the prado you were dissapointed it didn't complete the run with diffs open.
Defender was the most impressive, especially that first test showing how quickly the diff locked, all the other cars just sat there or went backwards. Having the ride height at the max setting at the end obviously hindered it, centre of gravity got too high and the weight came off the tyres.
The Defender has the smoothest actuating auto locker since the Gerotor, clearly LR is using the traction control to soften the engagement of the locker when it auto engages, and they still have an option to manually engage it. The Saanyong is probably using a GM gov lock, which is notorious for harsh engagement (it was originally designed for US military trucks in the 1970s and not changed much in design since other than being shrunk down to fit light truck axles).
@@clives4501 it doesn't but when you're on a 45 degree incline being a foot higher shifts the bodyweight of the car possibly giving the front wheels less traction. Try standing on a 45 degree hill and then leaning back. Same thing.
Also in the articulation (second) test the LR was the only vehicle to engage its drive almost instantly and very smoothly, with the rest taking 5-20 seconds to even engage, this alone makes it the best off-roader. Additionally, I really do think the tester taped the breaks to make it look bad and give the others a chance, even allow he claims he didn't.
Really good review. Well thought out, covered all scenarios, gave each vehicle their best shots possible to get around the obstacles, kept the playing field fair for all vehicles, and really well summarized in the end. I generally do not drop reviews, but you have earned this one. Keep up the really awesome work! Cheers from India!
@@fourbysolo That's crazy though don't you think just 6 months? My mates car in that 8000 kays was just below the low on the dipstick so it's pretty serious that it's not going to even get to the service interval kilometres wise without the addition of a litre or so of oil. For a 155k car that's supposed to be built for work/towing /touring that's not good enough.. Gets expensive too when you look at the cost of synthetic oils these days..
Great comparison and good range of cars. I do believe that the first incline greatly deteriorated and second half of cars were at a significant disadvantage. It looked like the hill wad wide enough for two tracks, if so couldve used both tracks
As a former Grand Cherokee L owner (traded for a new Grand Cherokee 2 row) the car will work a lot better in off road scenarios if you use more rpm. As you said, its not a diesel, it doesn't have low end torque to power through those obstacles like the others. The 4wd needs to see the torque which is achieved higher in the rpm range to work more effectively. driving mine through various terrains it performed way better than yours did.
I agree especially since the Grand Cherokee L was only a petrol and highly under torque engine, he should have given consistent throttle instead of letting go and on rocking it rather not letting it reach constant higher revs so the traction control can get past the obstacle. The diesel previous generation would have been fine with that sort of soft on and off throttle. I find that with the other cars he just gave it constant uninterrupted throttle but with the Jeep, deliberately letting the revs drop all the time and reving up again to just confuse the system.
fairly obvious he was doing his best to hinder it. he drove slower backed off on the difficult parts. And doors don't shut properly if you hold the door handle open.
Interesting, you show the Defender as 'struggling' on the 45 hill, but for the repeat at the end it sailed up. That test is definitely harder at first and the cars are scrubbing the scree off, making it easier as it goes on.
I reckon the Defender shouldn't have been on "mud ruts" for that last climb. It has a Gravel/Snow setting that would have been a better mode or perhaps even Sand mode which keeps your revs up.
Great review. He is spot on what he said about the vehicles being tested as they are straight out of the box with no mods , that's how you and I are going to use them ultimately . A fair and absolute test. Nice.
That’s not how you and I use them. Well you might. I changed my tyres for ATs as soon as possible. If I had purchased new I’d have got the dealer to supply with ATs.
I love my 2022 Rexton with the iron man lift. And you are correct the rear diff does stay locked when on loose ground sometimes on flat loose ground it turns on & off but never causes dramas. I’ve never decent control and don’t know anyone who does but it’s on the vehicle so it should be tested. Thanks Paul really appreciate your reviews.
I have a Rexton, from 2022 and I tell the truth that this driver did not drive the Rexton correctly. He did everything and talked about the Rexton, so that it seems that it is an unsatisfactory car. Shame, shame, shame

For these big comparison tests, I'd love to see you throw in a wild card and include an older vehicle (or two) from a previous generation, just to give an indication of how far vehicles are progressing. Perhaps the ageing Prado fulfilled that role on this test 😉, but I reckon there'd be some owners in your readership who'd jump at the chance to tag along for the day and see their pride and joy tested and compared.
Throw in a previous gen LR Defender with diff locks installed, or a modern Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or Ford Bronco. Good articulation and lockers at both ends > all the electronics in the world.
Patrol is king at this stuff. I was so impressed when I owned one. But Nissan still need to wake up and just modernise it a bit and they will have the perfect car.

Great evaluation of each vehicle but I think the price of each vehicle should be stated so a value-for-money guide to help buyers decide (balance between cost and capability). The best vehicle for 4x4 could be right out of people's price range for example.
That was a pretty good review, thanks. I do feel like the earlier vehicles had a tougher job on the 45 hill. The surface looked far more compacted for the later vehicles - the loose stuff had been chucked off by spinning tyres.
Overall a really good test. I did notice, with the Everest, you buried the throttle all the way up the 45 degree incline. Yet previously, with the Rexton, you said you would not do that and subsequently failed it.
The Rexton has the sketchy auto locking rear diff. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable putting the boot in up that incline with the potential for that diff to randomly kick in.
@@Amsterlager that locking diff does the job, even if it isn't the smoothest available. But looking at the ford everest where you can drink a coffee before it does his job, and hearing from paul... excelent... seems not very objective. And i really don't like that rexton, but to be honest, it offers way more for the money you pay than the ford.
Paul had it in mud ruts mode which I question. I reckon the TC would be better in normal mode. Could even consider doing slippery mode as it was raining. On the 4cyl he seemed quite concerned with rolling the car so didn't want to put his foot down a bit more, which explains why the V6 got up as it has just that bit more torque. Considering some of the other cars he played with the settings a lot more, he didn't really try much besides the obvious on this one.
@@markgibbons378 the problem with using slippery mode is that that’s telling the system that there’s not much traction so it is likely to throttle back the power to avoid the slipping which is now (it’s been told) much more likely.

You may as well say the cars with part time 4WD should stay in 2WD because that is how they come from the showroom. At the end of the day the unlocked 4WD option on those vehicles is simply there for enhanced stability on sealed roads, not for off-road conditions.

I too was thinking mud mode won’t be the best.
That's a good point, Mud mode is meant to allow wheel spin so you can clear out the tyres.
Again, my S5 Y62 is awesome and for the money it’s a mile in front. I love it

Fortuner is old-school, It is non-comfortable and based on Hilux truck and absolutely nothing to do with Prado. Only part-time, has rear lock, doesn't have smart systems and I think it is cheapest car ever.
$107k Patrol? low cost?
Patrol starts at $85k plus orc. Defender 110 starts at $115k and LC300 $108k.

Yes. I could see it was changing gears. Vehicles (autos) do that as revs get high - they upshift.

Though most NA market examples are also sold without the rear locker and with 21in wheels and rubber band tires.
lmao the driver itself said there was a mistake climbing the navara, so no they're absolutely equal
This is the reason why we have 4 diesel Mitsubishis in our household. The engines are tried and tested, and pretty much bulletproof.

@@oriondoublecrossed Or better yet, Duratracs or KO2s on 18in wheels. Dubs don't belong on off road vehicles, neither do tires with less than 65% aspect ratio. @@mrvwbug4423 yeah those wheels look silly. But 295/60/20 are more than enough on offroad because their sidewall is as tall as 265/65/18. You will have width + sidewall. People tend to go for wrong wheels for their truck which kills the ride.

Would you trust the reliability or dealer network in Oz?
The Defender has the smoothest actuating auto locker since the Gerotor, clearly LR is using the traction control to soften the engagement of the locker when it auto engages, and they still have an option to manually engage it. The Saanyong is probably using a GM gov lock, which is notorious for harsh engagement (it was originally designed for US military trucks in the 1970s and not changed much in design since other than being shrunk down to fit light truck axles).
Well jpracing, how would ride height change the weight?
@@clives4501 it doesn't but when you're on a 45 degree incline being a foot higher shifts the bodyweight of the car possibly giving the front wheels less traction. Try standing on a 45 degree hill and then leaning back. Same thing.
Also in the articulation (second) test the LR was the only vehicle to engage its drive almost instantly and very smoothly, with the rest taking 5-20 seconds to even engage, this alone makes it the best off-roader.
Additionally, I really do think the tester taped the breaks to make it look bad and give the others a chance, even allow he claims he didn't.

Great comparison and good range of cars. I do believe that the first incline greatly deteriorated and second half of cars were at a significant disadvantage. It looked like the hill wad wide enough for two tracks, if so couldve used both tracks
mitsubishis are so underrated. in terms of reliability and performance they are one of the best out there.
Technically it wasn't his but a hire
I agree especially since the Grand Cherokee L was only a petrol and highly under torque engine, he should have given consistent throttle instead of letting go and on rocking it rather not letting it reach constant higher revs so the traction control can get past the obstacle. The diesel previous generation would have been fine with that sort of soft on and off throttle. I find that with the other cars he just gave it constant uninterrupted throttle but with the Jeep, deliberately letting the revs drop all the time and reving up again to just confuse the system.
Yep have the same outcome in my V6 petrol Navara. Love it to bits
fairly obvious he was doing his best to hinder it. he drove slower backed off on the difficult parts. And doors don't shut properly if you hold the door handle open.

He’s not consistent.
Such a good review full of eye candy we can't get in North America. Thanks from Canada.
Great thorough tests and production from CE as always, alongside with the models that some regions don't get. Watched the full 90mins video without skipping a single minute because it's so well tested including the different options and setting tested in such a clear way Instead of jokes and unnecessary talks.
Friday night was meant to be movie night. But ended up watching this instead. Excellent review.
Pajero ans patrol definitely deserved the win. The jeep was an absolute joke considering all the other test and the price tag.
Jeeps usually get their best traction when they run over the bits that fall off them.
The Video We've All Been Waiting For! Also First!
Wow surprised the Paj did better up the 45 degree challenge than the Everest and the Paj also had H/T tyres.
TAYO tyres on Paj Sport are very average, to say at least
@@radissimo1Yep I changed to Michelin Lattitude much better then again I don't do any off road just for towing on black stuff. Michelin are incredibly quiet and grip is insane.
No way the Prado would fail the simplest test if you had just put the setting desired for that condition. Nothing wrong with the traction control. The condition required a minimum of locked centre diff, with appropriate tyre for appropriate grip required!
I love the tests you do for the cars! This is a great companion to Driving Sports TV. Very nicely setup and articulated narration.
There are a lot of videos of LC200 and Y62 Patrol on tough Victorian tracks. While the LCs get there (mostly) in the end, the Y62 just makes everything look calm and easier. Provided it fits through the gaps :)
My guess is that the rear diff lock helps a lot in those situations. Let's see how a triple locked LC300 would do :-)
@@zhamed9587 you would be suprised a 62 in rock mode is incredible havent had to use the locker much at all
@@zhamed9587 Let's see how much money a triple locked LC300 would cost over the Y62. It would want to be better for that money, but it won't be.
@@zhamed9587 The Patrol did not use the diff lock in this test, keep eyes and ears open for sounds other than Toyota advertising. The most expensive Toyota here, the Lexus, was rubbish.
@@einfelder8262 Look at 55:31, he mentions that he locks the rear diff.
I am surprised that Prado performed so bad. But Patrol is the real daddy))) deserved victory
Also I am pleased with Ssangyong. It has 2/3 of the rivals price and performed not worse and sometimes even better. It lacks ground clearance in base suspension and approach and depart angles are wished to be better. But in my opinion it is a good choice for the money.
And Patrol just once again has proved "no replacement for displacement"
The patrol had the rear diff locked though. We saw what the Prado did when it had its rear diff locked. I wonder how an LC300 with a rear (or even triple lock) would do.
Mate, love the channel, but when you're doing the "off road" testing, the Platinum comes with factory 18's and A/T's as well as the 21 package. Nobody in their right mind is gonna off road with the 21's, but it still went well considering those wheels. ✌🏼
Wow, this video really nailed it!
