Great video thanks Paul. I have the V6 Ranger Wildtrak and have been towing a 3t caravan for several months (10,000kms) I blew a turbo (a bearing failure) after 1700kms. Ford NZ looked after us with not only fixing it quickly but paying for our accommodation while we waited for the repair. Still love the truck, great for towing. I get 16lt per 100km while hooked up. We have a 2018 MUX and a reasonably newish caravan, and the fuel consumption is actually pretty good but the tank at 60L is too small. We upgraded to a 112L tank a few months ago and has increased our range by over 200km. I honestly think any 4WD that tows 3 or more tons should come with at least a 100L tank.

Paul, Paul, Paul, I speak as a truck driver of 25 years! Who the hell would tow a heavy trailer using cruise control? I use cruise control in a truck occasionally, in a car often on a freeway, but not when I’m in my suv towing a caravan ect.
Fantastic review Paul. Appreciate the significant effort to pull this off! Would love to see you do a similar test series for the Yank trucks that can potentially tow bigger loads - Ram 1500/2500, Silverado 1500/2500 and the New Ford F-150…
Great video and very fair, 300 Cruiser and D300 Defender both did quite well, nice to see the Defender take the win, it trully is a Jack of all trades 4x4. The Auto lowering can be switched off in settings via the Pivo Pro centre screen 👌🏽👍🏽 Thanks for the vid 🙌🏽
I think people avoid the Defender not because it isn't good, but rather the reputation of the brand. When we looked at getting our car last year, Land Rover just didn't make the list based on brand reputation criteria (a few others in the same boat).
Great review. Just wondering if you put the trailer dimensions on to the Defender 110 infotainment, it helps the suspension to adjust to your load for better towing. I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. Looking forward to the next reviews.
There is a couple using a Defender as a tow vehicle for the big lap on RUclips. As good as it is towing the reliability is a real let down, especially for remote travel.
That is one instance, plenty others with no issues, also seen lots of "couples" doing laps with the LC300 with all sorts of issues, oil usage, injector issues due to DPF burns etc.
I only just realised where your test track is! Lang Lang Proving Ground! Good to see it still being put to use as it’s truly a piece of Australian manufacturing history.
I can appreciate the effort that went into creating this video. It goes to show that many of these SUVs are not genuine tow vehicles and the marketing departments will say anything to get paid.
Awesome work as usual team! Would have been handy to show the sticker price of each car. Someone shopping in the SsanYong Rexton price bracket isn't likely to rush out and drop a deposit on a defender.
Performance is always great with ⛽ but NOT when it comes to ⛽ economy, these diesel trucks (Hilux) will pretty much get as good as a hybrid turbo petrol engine in the 🆕 Gen Tacoma with 2.4L turbo +🔋
@@dragonz_breath4072 what the hell you talking about I don't drive a y62 I drive a Toyota Tacoma TRD 4X4 off-road 6-speed manual... It's just a mild setup with just a few personal mods that I wanted but I think the Tacoma is VERY beautiful (stock AF) does not need a lift maybe just go to a 265/75 16 10ply tire up from the 70 series tire gives it a 1-in bigger so then you're running on 32-in tires truck is good to go! Hi Paul - I must say I was very surprised about the difference’s between the 300 series cruiser and the Lexus , on the point of both of the fords , with the 10 speed auto you can actually lock out the higher gears which would help whilst towing , another great vid with great content 👍
The Everest Platinum has a huge moon roof and Bang and Olufsen sound system and toe sensing boot opener that Paul did not mention but with so much kit, he gave an thorough explanation.
I love this type of testing. Really good job. Eventually please combine all your SUV tests (hill, towing, braking, etc.) into an overall report and preference ranking. Maybe have more than one reviewer give an opinion as well.
These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.
I expected that from the Rexton, but the huge surprise is how woeful the Pajero Sport is, even with no load on. Wow. And there are so many on the road, surprisingly. Another thing to note with these tests, you have a 2800kg van on the back, but haven't loaded up the car with the family, luggage, etc.... There is no way the Pajero Sport could tow 3100kg, especially with anything in the car.
Everyone is praising Paul for being thorough on his reviews but the dude has no idea how to tow properly. Most of his "towing tests" are super unrealistic. Wouldn't trust him to tow anything. Stick to city cars bud
I'd take Patrol or Landcruiser over Landrover when comes to towing because boot door. Top opening doors allows you open it with trailer attached also makes reversing so much easier especially boat down a ramp where you see where it is tracking. This is why I prefer wagons over utes. Relibility wise best sell Defender before factory warranty runs out. Patrol extra fuel costs can be offset against lower service and purchase price compared to Landcruiser. $20k buys lot of fuel can also add $1000 a year from 5% interest that extra $20k could be earning if invested or $1500 if you have to borrow money. Like piece on vehicle payload, people forget to add trailer's drawbar weight when calculating this.
Had my eye on a Pajero Sport GSR, not so sure anymore. I certainly wouldnt be towing with these loads, but there are some other issues with power and braking that are giving me second thoughts. Even with a 10yr warranty. Great test, thanks for the amazing breakdowns.
I tow 2.8t with a Triton. The 8sp would be an advantage I think. Having said all that, power wise the Triton copes fine at typical NZ towing speeds of 90km/hr. It is working when you push it or there are steep hills. We tested the PS and disliked the soft suspension. Some better shocks I think would make a world of difference.
I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I have a folding Avan which will probably weigh about 1100 kg with some payload. It should perform better than the combo in the video.
Enjoyable vid - and such detail and hard work! Not surprised the Defender won. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.
Very good testing you did. A test from say 60 to zero with un-braked trailer to see how good the car’s brakes are with an un-braked load pushing from behind. Although that test might be pushing the limits of safe testing, due to possible jack knifing.
A couple of suggestions: 1) As you did the tow test with a 2800kg trailer with 280kg towball weight it would have been good to have done a run through of the vehicle weights using a 2800kg trailer as a reference; 2) It would been good to see that wider camera view of all the vehicles as they went through the bumpy section with the trailer attached. Other than that I thought it was a great video and will be recommended as reference to many when I'm asked about picking a tow vehicle.
I think to take all these SUV,s/4x4 dual cabs and do a comprehensive test like this is an awesome effort. Its so hard to please everyone but you take a fair and resonable approach to each car and say it how it is. This is actual consumer advice.
Fascinating test, well done. I have been pulling trailers for most of my life as a farmer now in my late 70s. I once owned a VW Touareg V10 5ltr diesel which was excellent on the road & usless on the land. I also owned a couple of Subarus Forresters which were brilliant all round 2ltr diesels. I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque. One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I'd love to tow the Dyna trailer with my Skoda, but we don't have any in Ireland.
Great Video. One thing to add to the video would have been reversing, Maneuverability and vision from mirrors with larger trailers. I currently own a D300 110 Defender and tow a car on a trailer regularly. Have to agree with the comments. I've never had an issue with the tow hitch hitting the rear wheel though. A Handy point with the Air suspension for long tail trailers, being able to lower the Car (raising the rear of the trailer) when negotiating steep approach angles to reverse up steep drive ways. This is priceless. Prior to the Defender, I towed with a Skoda Kodiaq RS (diesel version) and I have to say it towed even better than the Defender (particularly in reversing maneuvers) Vision from the side mirrors was excellent and torque and economy for a little 4 Cylinder it was amazing even accelerating when overtaking up some of the inclines of the Hume Highway back from Golborne into Sydney and an average fuel economy under for 10L/100km round trip Sydney --> Marulan and back. Great Video.
The Lexus LX600 uses a full time 4WD system with a 40/60 rear split. So the side with the least traction spins more. It relies on a torsen LSD to control that. Also its exactly the same as the LC300. The difference is the squat
Hi Paul did the Landcruiser use oil on the test? My good mate just got rid of his brand new Sahara VX with 8000 kays ( Paid 150 odd k) after seeing his chewing oil hard. Thanks to Jon Cadogan for his video which warned the public as to the extent of the problem.. He got $153k.. Decided to sell immediately before the general public got wind of the problem and values dropped..
Amazing review. Some feedback but not for this video: really love the acceleration and speedo view in your normal reviews down the back straight of your test track. However, there are some reviews of late that have had it missing. Would really love to have that in all reviews as it is a really good way of comparing all the cars in terms of power and speed at the top end. Even the slower vehicles. Other than that, love this channel.
iterestingly, recently went to put a rack system on the roof of my car, after accounting for the Rack weight of 60kg, It only left 40kg of additonal payload weight, was better (and cheaper) to just put traditional roof racks on. As with Towing, Roof Racks are something that are often over loaded.
I ordered the top-spec Ultra. I went in super sceptical but the fact is, it's a whole lot of car for 65k and GWM is backing it. 7 year warranty, roadside and capped price servicing and is simply better and more comfortable than cars almost double its price.
So you put the Rexton in Power mode with the large trailer but not the LC300 (Sport). You should be using either Normal or Sport/Power on all vehicles rather than different modes on different vehicles. Also with the Rexton cruise-control, might have been best to just manually change it down a gear to hold the speed. I think you’d find it difficult with the 3500kg max towing vehicles to actually tow that with the family on board. In many cases you can only have the driver and ½ a tank of fuel before you’re overweight. But anyway. With the Defender you can disable the Access Height on power off when you are towing and re-enable it after. Most people don’t tow every day. Would have been nice to test with the P400 Defender 110 also. In the section at the end - probably should note that’s GVM also includes the towball down weight. (Though it was touched on in the Pajero Sport breakdown example). Lastly - can’t wait to see V8 Defender, Discovery 5 and Range Rover.
I think the important thing to mention is that no matter what you buy you are getting something that is very capable. For the difference in price, the cheaper ones hold exceptional value.
A comprehensive test with great consideration to experimental design. And mentions of little things like the effect of GPS speed vs indicated cruise control 100km/h on fuel economy showed you were thinking about some of the variables which are difficult to eliminate. Kudos. I tow with an old Audi SQ7. Effortless performance and outstanding fuel economy from a car worth way less than some of those on test.
The Land Rover is $40k more than the top of the range Everest V6. Can’t see the value in the extra $40k. I was surprised in the stopping distance. Anything above 40m is unacceptable in my opinion. Good comparison. Still waiting on the 7 seat SUV test. The ones that don’t have proper off-road capabilities. Ones like the CX8, Sorrento, Santa Fe, CX9, Tiguan, outlander and kluger

Yes would love to know
Correct, v6 ranger is an abomination
@@catchawakeup6411plenty of news articles out there. Google it.
100%, we were very disappointed with ours and sold it and purchased a Y62 Patrol
Loving these longer test comparison videos.
More to come!
We had an Audi SQ7 diesel when we towed our van ......now THAT was a great tow vehicle.
I was a bit surprised at the result but as you say it is the jack off all trades fair and square.
@@fawshaw3361 for sure 😉👍🏽
I think people avoid the Defender not because it isn't good, but rather the reputation of the brand. When we looked at getting our car last year, Land Rover just didn't make the list based on brand reputation criteria (a few others in the same boat).
It would be great to compare them again after 200,000 kms and compare total costs over that period.
@@8U5HM8 thats a shame, awesome vehicle
Awesome video guys! You go above and beyond with how thorough you are with testing!
Thanks James! :)
Did your Defender testing vehicle have the tow pack? If you enter the trailer dimensions it changes the suspension and provides additional features.
"Reliabity" is Tupperware Toyota Bullsh$t
Great comparison, very complete. There are few videos of this type, and none is so detailed. Waiting for the Off Road tests.
Enjoy 😁 👉 ruclips.net/video/h0Rn0CyHh2g/видео.html
my favorite here is the breaking test and the hill climb, its fun looking at the cars while braking hard and see how it woggles and shakes!
Love the video. I absolutely love my Patrol Y62 towing 3.1 tonne with ease average fuel sits around ltrs/100
It’s a beast and makes towing an easy job!
Your fuel consumption is ??
on the last 12k trip averaged 23.8 towing 3.1tonne

I only just realised where your test track is! Lang Lang Proving Ground! Good to see it still being put to use as it’s truly a piece of Australian manufacturing history.
I can appreciate the effort that went into creating this video. It goes to show that many of these SUVs are not genuine tow vehicles and the marketing departments will say anything to get paid.
Awesome work as usual team! Would have been handy to show the sticker price of each car. Someone shopping in the SsanYong Rexton price bracket isn't likely to rush out and drop a deposit on a defender.
Patrol is king I absolutely love the NA V8.
Performance is always great with ⛽ but NOT when it comes to ⛽ economy, these diesel trucks (Hilux) will pretty much get as good as a hybrid turbo petrol engine in the 🆕 Gen Tacoma with 2.4L turbo +🔋
@@honda116969 mate if you can afford a Y62, you can certainly afford fuel.
@@dragonz_breath4072 what the hell you talking about I don't drive a y62 I drive a Toyota Tacoma TRD 4X4 off-road 6-speed manual... The diesel Hilux gets around 25-30 mpg my 🛻💨 gets 17-20 city-highway 18 combine! 8-10mpg better is way more + more than 2X the payload & I wouldn't doubt it if it did better off-road that's probably pretty close & I saw that the GR Hilux was just under $39,000 & that's pretty much what I paid for my truck the Hilux was $1,000 cheaper! My Tacoma is the basic 📦 doesn't have any of the 360° 📸 no sunroof no leather or heated 💺💺 I guess if it doesn't have all those goofy features that I probably wouldn't use that's less shit to break down the 🛣️ mine came with all-weather floor mats, side steps, 🛏️ lights, exhaust tip & mud flaps those are just small little additions & make the 🛻💨 look pretty clean & I added the MX4 aluminum tonneau cover & tinted the windows. So you don't know what's in the cab nor don't know what's in the 🛏️ the best thing of all I added the RCI steel transmission skid 🍽️ with 🐈 shields so none of the tweakers can get to my catalytic converters! The only lift I would ever do is the factory TRD lift because you start getting into some wild shit and I don't want my 🛻💨 fucked up. Most people drive their trucks on the street but set them up for off-road 🤔 seems pretty idiotic to me lol unless you're out there off-🛣️ all the time. Manual has some super long gear ratios maybe the throws are a little long but I'll tell you what it's an absolute flawless beautiful transmission I've driven every generation Civic Si all the way from 1999 1.6 VTEC up till the 2019 Civic SI 1.5 turbo! I would hit more grinds & miss shift in those civics then I would my Tacoma I only did one little grind in my Tacoma so far & that was because of me. Just an amazing 🛻💨 If you don't expect too much out of it you will be VERY happy. But if you expect it to be a 🌎 beater you will be disappointed, it's just an average old skool 🛻💨 that's perfect for the old skool men
LDV knew they would fail miserably hence they refused to lend their vehicle to you 😂😂😅
Eyyy its here! Looking forward to the offroad part of the mega test!
Coming soon!
Hi Paul - I must say I was very surprised about the difference’s between the 300 series cruiser and the Lexus , on the point of both of the fords , with the 10 speed auto you can actually lock out the higher gears which would help whilst towing , another great vid with great content 👍
Kudos for all the work. Watched from start to finish
That's a big effort, great job!
That Defender has to have the sweetest sounding Diesel anywhere.
Seems to me on a value proposition Patrol wins hands down, what do you think
The Everest Platinum has a huge moon roof and Bang and Olufsen sound system and toe sensing boot opener that Paul did not mention but with so much kit, he gave an thorough explanation.
Great comparisons, thank you for such a diverse and in depth review.
Love the effort you put into these tests and the honest opinion and comments you make. Still working my way through all the cars! Quite a long video.
Brilliant video
So much effort put in to achieve the results
Well done to all involved
We did think about that, but it wouldn't be safe so we used an unladen load for braking as a benchmark.
A couple of suggestions:
1) As you did the tow test with a 2800kg trailer with 280kg towball weight it would have been good to have done a run through of the vehicle weights using a 2800kg trailer as a reference;
2) It would been good to see that wider camera view of all the vehicles as they went through the bumpy section with the trailer attached.
This is so amazing, almost 2 hours of hardwork from you guys
Superb idea and event. Well done, Mate!!!
Defender one this test but if still loses on the most basics. If you have a drained battery you'll need a tow truck to take it back to the dealership.
The fuel usage screen is the last thing you want to use to calculate fuel usage
Very Detailed Video Mate!! Thanks
We have a Rexton really happy with it but definitely wouldn’t put 3.5 ton behind it !
The Lexus LX600 uses a full time 4WD system with a 40/60 rear split. So the side with the least traction spins more. It relies on a torsen LSD to control that. Also its exactly the same as the LC300. The difference is the squat
Good comparison of different suv’s Paul. I’ve a pajero sport and happy with it. Wacthing from 🇳🇿Waiting for your off road videos.
Although the Defender won , we all know which one will last the longest !
Well, we think we do.
if you can keep the oil up to it 😉😉😁😁😂😂
Hi Paul did the Landcruiser use oil on the test? My good mate just got rid of his brand new Sahara VX with 8000 kays ( Paid 150 odd k) after seeing his chewing oil hard. Thanks to Jon Cadogan for his video which warned the public as to the extent of the problem.. He got $153k.. Decided to sell immediately before the general public got wind of the problem and values dropped..
is that the LC200 v8 or theLC300V6?
Video quality over the roof, damn🙌🏿
👌🏼
Jeep took off like it has a CVT.. poor form from it for a new model!
Really good test👍
Amazing review.
Some feedback but not for this video: really love the acceleration and speedo view in your normal reviews down the back straight of your test track. However, there are some reviews of late that have had it missing.
Would really love to have that in all reviews as it is a really good way of comparing all the cars in terms of power and speed at the top end. Even the slower vehicles.
Other than that, love this channel.
relatable cars and reviews. Your channel does this well
It'd be nice to see towing reviews and roof weights for medium SUVs, including hybrids.
iterestingly, recently went to put a rack system on the roof of my car, after accounting for the Rack weight of 60kg, It only left 40kg of additonal payload weight, was better (and cheaper) to just put traditional roof racks on.
This channel really is the benchmark of car reviews
Should do a van comparison test, with towing, 0-100 and other stuff.
did anyone notice the defender throwing in the centre and rear difflock onroad? How bizarre! Great video!
Yes, you’re right. Shouldn’t make much of a difference - at full throttle the drive mode is irrelevant.
I think the important thing to mention is that no matter what you buy you are getting something that is very capable. For the difference in price, the cheaper ones hold exceptional value.
All the way from Johannesburg, Paul you the GOAT
Thanks legend!
Defender is such a great piece of kit! Rexton for value for money though…
Good coverage and detail explained
Awsome work video and idea ..loved it
Thank you! Cheers!
A comprehensive test with great consideration to experimental design. And mentions of little things like the effect of GPS speed vs indicated cruise control 100km/h on fuel economy showed you were thinking about some of the variables which are difficult to eliminate. Kudos. I tow with an old Audi SQ7. Effortless performance and outstanding fuel economy from a car worth way less than some of those on test.
feeling good owning a defender
The Land Rover is $40k more than the top of the range Everest V6. Can’t see the value in the extra $40k. I was surprised in the stopping distance. Anything above 40m is unacceptable in my opinion. Good comparison. Still waiting on the 7 seat SUV test. The ones that don’t have proper off-road capabilities. Ones like the CX8, Sorrento, Santa Fe, CX9, Tiguan, outlander and kluger
