I am a big Toyota fan, owned many including 4 x 200 series. I drove one of these yesterday and apart from the looks it’s such a compromised vehicle in so many ways and it’s a huge fail by Toyota IMO. Anyone who buys this has more money than sense. Everyone should keep their old Prado.
Smoking at the start even, could you imagine the aussie battlers with their flaming pitchforks if that was the tank smoking on such a simple task? But if it's Toyota.. well, they're our darling.
Would love to see you guys do a Prado GX review Paul! GX model seems to be the only offering priced with some semblance of sanity, and being the other 5-door option it might be the most realistic pick for would-be buyers…
It's interesting that they are only giving reviewers the top-spec models. The models most people can afford don't have a diff locker. I'm not sure why Toyota would gate-keep a necessary 4x4 feature and require you to pay nearly $100k for a diff locker. Also, that boot looks like an afterthought. I hope they fix it in a future facelift.
Been keeping an eye out for info on these for months. Just curiosity of course, I can’t even afford a 3rd hand MG so a Toyota will always be just a dream. But as I consume all the info and comments on these, being broke is starting to feel less bad.
The storage hump says "this was going to be IRS" and they changed back at the last minute. The live axle is likely on borrowed time. The third row seat should have been removable like in a minivan, however clasp mechanisms cost more money.
Ain’t gonna buy this car. Ad blue Bigger size but same engine. Horrible boot load capacity. It is just way too much expensive. You can buy 300 if you put little bit more money. Absolute BS for my opinion
I personally appreciate you putting in the extra effort to include mosquitoes inside the car to provide an authentic depiction of the misery of the off roading experience.
Anyone buying this vehicle proves fools are easily parted with their money. Overpriced, old engine with after thought where to put the battery. Not to mention the max weight over that battery cover is 60kg. Sort limits what you can put in the boot. Plastic side steps, come on. You didn’t mention the ground clearance is a problem. Videos I’ve seen, people who have bought this are having to lift to get decent 4WD clearance. Then that engine noise. Oh and you have Ad Blue. The list goes on. Toyota know people will buy these cars on reputation alone and not give any consideration to other competitors in or coming to market. These are definitely not value for money.
No mate. The 10cm wide lip at the very back is rated to 60kg. The floor is a normal floor. Nothing to do with the battery. This was just rubbish published before anyone even had the car.
I think I'll be keeping my 1988 LN61 4Runner a little bit longer now. At least my rear seats fold completely flat with the cargo floor, it has an electrically operated tailgate window, and it's probably only marginally slower than this Prado to 100kph lol. Of course, I put my life on the line every time it leaves the garage - It's real driving by the seat of your pants stuff, and it's a rush! And unlike the new Prado, it's going up in value every day now and there's absolutely no electronic gadgets to go wrong. Better living everyone!
Looks like Prados will be living out of town. Big cars with electrification will eat them in town with massively better performance. Same will happen in ute market. Wheezing diesels are done.
Hey paul I am ur subscriber as well a regular viewer, can u plzz review kakadu as well as i have got it already and was eagerly waiting for the review...
What an interesting review. I need to point out that many have criticized the 300 in certain models like the ZX Sahara being particularly road based given their lower hanging rear bumper compared to the other models suggesting that off road performance is somewhat compromised. However, the 300 ZX Sahara has a departure angle of 25 degrees, and the new Prado has a departure angle of a dismal 17 degrees... Wonder what the off road purists have to say about that. Extremely disappointing that the 0-100 is almost 12 seconds, that brings us back to the performance of vehicles of the 80's. And wow, that traction control is non existent..
Thanks for the awesome review. Was totally shocked at how much space was taken up in the boot in all 5 models tho that 250mm height in the GXL, VX & Kakadu is ridiculous. Not to mention the adblue & loss of 150L fuel tank. These are some of the reasons I'm feeling very relieved that I bought one of the last brand new 2023 Kakadu's in May this year as I didn't like the look of the new FJ Cruiser looking Prado either. I think once people realise all the negatives with this newer model the 150 series Prado's are going to hold their value like nothing else.
What a disappointment. Ill stick with my 2015 Kakadu. Longer range tank, more boot space, easily accessible spare wheel, almost the same performance, less tech to go wrong, no adblue rubbish. No thanks. Yes it lacks the outright performance of an Everest, but even after 9 years and 190k it still drives like near new. No rattles, no squeaks all original bushes, suspension, etc, with just regular servicing. Not sure how well the new Everest will age. Only time will tell.
@amita1400 So far so good. But I go on regular long drives which helps. It's a touring vehicle and I love it for that. Fits the bill perfectly. Also, the dpf hardware and software got revised in 2021 and Toyota have agreed to replace it under 10 year warranty. I'll be getting it replaced soon as a precaution before my car hits 10 years.
2009 120, Also have Longer range, bigger boot, close to same performance, lighter, bigger load carrying capacity, no adblue, no DPF and yeah no squeaks and rattles even 16 years later. I test drove the 250 VX....it was disappointing
Being the older 2.8L engine, everyone knows it isn’t built for sprinting; however, based on reviews, we can’t say it’s slower than the 150. The millisecond difference in time could be due to the start/stop system being active, which can cause a slight lag. Additionally, it took some time for the diff locks to engage, as they need to be in neutral-driver error 😅
IMHO from a 150 VX Owner who was looking to upgrade Positives - Looks great from the outside - Front dash and front seating area are excellent - Tech and screens look fantastic - 8 speed auto Negatives - Approx 10k + more expensive across the range - No gas struts for bonnet - 48 V mild hybrid adds complexity, and dubious benefits - Ad Blue addition and still has a DPF - Same carryover engine 2.8 L GD with no more power/torque - Seven seat set up is a backwards step with a much smaller amount of boot room/very high lip, plastic storage ‘box’ and lack of room for a fridge - Toyota says seats can’t be removed due to battery underneath - Weighs 250-300kg more - Cool box is much smaller than 150 on VX+ - Rear seats/2nd row don’t slide back-and-forth for more space - Only 2, 5 seat variants the GX and the altitude to avoid to limited boot space - Fuel tank is 110 L - less than 150 L from the Prado 150 - Smaller boot opening height than the 150 - no rear Diff lock in anything but the altitude - more models in old 150 have both - Payloads approx 100kg less than old 150’s - Stop start - Wheel not on the back, under car - Glove box and storage in the front is small I.e no sunglasses holder, storage above gearshift in cubby - Driver monitoring system annoyance - No space for a dual battery under bonnet -Sliding GVM kg, moves up and down depending on model grade. Previous Prado was fixed GVM for all models, with payload increasing as you went down the range with less kit. - Wait for the hybrid 2.4 L turbo from USA
I was a toyota man until I owned the hilux rogue which I sold and now owning the ford ranger xlt. I am going to be honest both are overpriced shit boxes. People paying the toyota tax for this landcruiser are delusional. I am going to buy a mitsubishi triton once I hit a couple of months with the ranger. im never going to buy ford or toyota again
Good choice on the Triton. I bought a new one after owing a lemon next gen Ranger. Within 17 months of ownership in the Ranger it was in the shop…. 10 times!! Never again. Triton has been perfect so far and amazing value.
As a user of the old Prado 120 v6, I'm only more interested in the new generation front. I'll keep driving my old car, maybe the next update might be a Chinese car brand.
Regarding the offroad traction mode : Center diff is a Torsen . This kind of diff multiplies the torque by a factor and send it to a wheel with more traction. , but it needs to have a bit traction to multiply it. 0 (zero) multiplied with anything is still 0 (zero). The conclusion if if you have no traction at all it cannot multiply the traction and send it to the other wheels.
Don't talk about that you will confuse people that only know what a toyota badge looks like. And don't even mention the sharks 320kw 650nm outputs because that will induce thoughts of utter disbelief from a 2.8 slug owner.
Hi Paul, I’m still waiting for my GX550 overtrail in the carbonate with black roof hence delay, would you go this or the Altitude? I found the Altitude underpowered but $30k difference is making me think. I suppose the question is, do I keep waiting for my GX?
A company called Loaded Drawers are providing a 3rd row delete option that gives a smooth and strong floor to the cargo area that covers the 48v battery system.
Good overview. Being a current Prado owner, to say this is a dissapointment is an understatement. Van towers will not like the fuel reduction, advantage over the competiton now gone But I think this model is the one to get if you wanted one.
I think tojo has designed this for the US market and we just suffer the consequences. A spare on the rear door would allow a bigger fuel tank and or allow the 48v system to be mounted lower in the vehicle. I guess the aftermarket will continue to solve problems that toyota creates.
Despite its shortcomings (ie. so-so engine, and the 3rd-row seat disaster), they will sell a heap of them. Just look at it. Good review of its features.
Don’t forget the weight of a tank of fuel needs to be added to the 350kg ball weight of the GVM. This is a dry weight that’s quoted so add another 100kg
Excellent objective review. Thank you Paul! Looks like no matter how cheap an upgrade Toyota does, people will go for looks instead of practicality. $100k for a mediocre car! Oh my! Keeping my 2.8 Fortuner which has the same engine, has rear differential lock, sliding seats and way bigger boot for half the price. And I have the luxury of putting back my third row seats with 4 bolts and 20 minutes! 😂Yes it’s less comfortable but hey at least it feels like a real 4wd. Everest looks very good value for money now. And I see heaps on the road.
@ yeah I guess you’re right. Just crazy that cars are getting more and more expensive. And there’s not much to justify this price. Only a small jump to the Lexus GX
Great review. I was keen, but will wait another model or two. Love the satellite sos 🆘 function. Manufacturers really should provide a barebones model and allow us to add all the sensors and software piece by piece on or after purchase. I don’t need lane assist, ever. Hopefully they fix the weird boot.
As someone that has always liked Toyotas, this has been a disappointment for me from the start… first the styling inside and out too American focussed in my opinion, then the colour palette also inside and out too natural. The compromised boot areas and definitely the engine. I was hoping there would have at least been a twin turbo version of the 2.8 that produced 180-200kW and 600Nm. Also a lot of previous technology gone missing in this generation and you’re having to pay over $10k more. I really hope Toyota can rework this new platform to better accommodate electrification as this clearly did not have it in mine
Well I bought a brand new 150 series two years ago, just before they stopped selling anymore and looking at this I am glad I bought the 150 series as buying this 250 wouldn't give anything different that mine has. As I bought the very last of the 150 series, it has the latest everything and any problems that may have existed would have all been ironed out. Also my 150 series is faster than this as it has the same engine, same power but it is lighter. The new one has less ground clearance than my 150. Two big fails in my opinion. I have customised mine inside and outside. Especially inside, so it looks more like a Mercedes interior now. Mostly all soft materials that came with the car. If I hadnt already had a prado, I may have considered this, but I have no intention of changing my 150 for this 250. To think my 150 series doesnt have all this stupid terrain select but it would have simply pulled out of that with no problem ar all. These terrain control features in new cars are nothing but a useless gimick.
Thanks Paul another great video. I had an expression of interest order on the GXL and had an hour long test drive last week. I thought it drove very well but agree with you the old 2.8 should have had a major update. The interior is very quiet with no noise or rattles but noticed some wind noise I think coming from around the mirrors at about 80 km. However my main gripe is the major flaw with the boot design which could be a deal breaker with the popular GXL, VX and Kakadu models. I hope the designers at Toyota get this sorted out asap! I think the Ford Everest V6 is still safe at the moment but for how long?
I had two previous generation Ravs; comfortable, spacious, easy to drive, I enjoyed them. Bought the current generation Rav without a test drive; expensive, cramped interior, uncomfortable driving position, peaky engine, mismatched gearbox, I couldn't wait to sell it. I had the previous generation Prado; spacious, comfortable, felt absolutely solid with a touch of luxury. Except for want of a bit more power, I really liked it. This new generation Prado seems to have gone the way of the Rav. I've heard similar sentiments about the LC200 vs the LC300. (If anyone knows of tests comparing the old and new models, I'd appreciate the links.) But in general, I think Toyota is losing the plot a little...
@@daweigo6851there’s a reason they only sell diesel , in my opinion they must research what sells and diesel is King in aus in resale and general usefulness
I think the word "disappointing" was used too much for this thing to be worth it's price. At $90k + 'amazing' should be the key word. Be interesting to see when you do the tow test.
Great review. Really like the looks inside and out. Like the rest of Australia, waited a long time for the new Prado to finally arrive. Very disappointed with the engine. Then losing a massive part of the usable boot space for a battery that will save you maybe 1L/100km. Also the difference between the models, for Toyota you're either a 4wd enthusiest or soccer Mum, cant be both. I am very hesitant to buy this first generation, I'm sure Toyota will learn many lessons from this.
In 4H (FT4WD) only it’s in sealed road setting. Select 4H and CDL you then set the computer for off road. Being in this would have let you select the rear diff lock.

This looks way better than the top heavy looking 300 Landcruiser. If only it had a V6 diesel
If only they bring out the iforce max!
every great wall tank 500 has to have its cheap copy
Actually that is incorrect. All models have different locks eveb the cheapest model. My 150 series came with different locks as standard.
@@Car-crazy rear diff lock is what he's talking about. centre diff lock doesn't count as. totally different.
Why didn't they use the same tune as the Hilux GR Sport with 165kW and 550Nm?
That’s the next upgrade, can’t do it all upfront there would be no-where to go in year 3-4
It’s Apple, sorry Toyota
Been keeping an eye out for info on these for months. Just curiosity of course, I can’t even afford a 3rd hand MG so a Toyota will always be just a dream. But as I consume all the info and comments on these, being broke is starting to feel less bad.
The storage hump says "this was going to be IRS" and they changed back at the last minute. The live axle is likely on borrowed time. The third row seat should have been removable like in a minivan, however clasp mechanisms cost more money.
The problem is all models share the raised floor because of hybrid battery.... gotta be a better place.
Ain’t gonna buy this car.
Ad blue
Bigger size but same engine.
Horrible boot load capacity.
It is just way too much expensive. You can buy 300 if you put little bit more money.
Absolute BS for my opinion
Exactly the same reasons I will avoid it too. Makes the 300 series justifiable 👍
I personally appreciate you putting in the extra effort to include mosquitoes inside the car to provide an authentic depiction of the misery of the off roading experience.
Thanks Paul, looking forward to your Altitude vs Tremor vid when it arrives next month 👍
Ground clearance compared to what? 220mm is stacks for a stock 4x4.
Everything has plastic sidesteps and everything will have adblue 🙄
I think I'll be keeping my 1988 LN61 4Runner a little bit longer now. At least my rear seats fold completely flat with the cargo floor, it has an electrically operated tailgate window, and it's probably only marginally slower than this Prado to 100kph lol. Of course, I put my life on the line every time it leaves the garage - It's real driving by the seat of your pants stuff, and it's a rush! And unlike the new Prado, it's going up in value every day now and there's absolutely no electronic gadgets to go wrong. Better living everyone!
If you still have a car from 1988, you were never buying anything anyway. There's been heaps of great cars in that time.
The battery is a complete waste of time. Only reason it is there is to try and appease the federal governments future emission laws.
If it helps the car continue to be sold legally in Australia, its not a waste of time
Looks like Prados will be living out of town. Big cars with electrification will eat them in town with massively better performance. Same will happen in ute market. Wheezing diesels are done.
Hey paul
I am ur subscriber as well a regular viewer, can u plzz review kakadu as well as i have got it already and was eagerly waiting for the review...
Do an engine startup and exhaust revs for all the next reviews! @CarExpert
I like the look of these
won't the spare tyre get damaged offroad? Or even snagged?
This looks mean As but still will have the Ford Everest though!
Great to see a towing test if you can.
Geez my 20 year old Discovery 2 would walk that offset in high range with its ancient TC.
Rear diff lock should be on all models. They should make GR Sport with front diff lock also
Thanks for the awesome review.
I’ll stick with my bulletproof 1GR-FE 120 Series, thanks.
You understand people get more kms out of 1GDs right?
Other than the old interior tech 120 way better engine and storage than 150 let alone 250
Will Australia get the round headlight Prado?
What a disappointment. Ill stick with my 2015 Kakadu. Longer range tank, more boot space, easily accessible spare wheel, almost the same performance, less tech to go wrong, no adblue rubbish. No thanks. Yes it lacks the outright performance of an Everest, but even after 9 years and 190k it still drives like near new. No rattles, no squeaks all original bushes, suspension, etc, with just regular servicing. Not sure how well the new Everest will age. Only time will tell.
How is your dpf?
IMHO from a 150 VX Owner who was looking to upgrade
Positives
- Looks great from the outside
- Front dash and front seating area are excellent
- Tech and screens look fantastic
- 8 speed auto
Negatives
- Approx 10k + more expensive across the range
- No gas struts for bonnet
- 48 V mild hybrid adds complexity, and dubious benefits
- Ad Blue addition and still has a DPF
- Same carryover engine 2.8 L GD with no more power/torque
- Seven seat set up is a backwards step with a much smaller amount of boot room/very high lip, plastic storage ‘box’ and lack of room for a fridge - Toyota says seats can’t be removed due to battery underneath
- Weighs 250-300kg more
- Cool box is much smaller than 150 on VX+
- Rear seats/2nd row don’t slide back-and-forth for more space
- Only 2, 5 seat variants the GX and the altitude to avoid to limited boot space
- Fuel tank is 110 L - less than 150 L from the Prado 150
- Smaller boot opening height than the 150
- no rear Diff lock in anything but the altitude - more models in old 150 have both
- Payloads approx 100kg less than old 150’s
- Stop start
- Wheel not on the back, under car
- Glove box and storage in the front is small I.e no sunglasses holder, storage above gearshift in cubby
- Driver monitoring system annoyance
- No space for a dual battery under bonnet
-Sliding GVM kg, moves up and down depending on model grade. Previous Prado was fixed GVM for all models, with payload increasing as you went down the range with less kit.
- Wait for the hybrid 2.4 L turbo from USA
So many cons aren’t there.
@@ducksnuts1385 150 is a relic compared to 250 in my view. I am glad I upgraded.
@@jamesm6341welcome the the Toyota beta tester group and you paid an extra 14k for the privilege. 🎉
@ 😀 it ll be more expensive when the Ute tax kicks in mid next year.
BYD Shark
BYD Shark is the new benchmark
Don't talk about that you will confuse people that only know what a toyota badge looks like. And don't even mention the sharks 320kw 650nm outputs because that will induce thoughts of utter disbelief from a 2.8 slug owner.
Hi Paul, I’m still waiting for my GX550 overtrail in the carbonate with black roof hence delay, would you go this or the Altitude? I found the Altitude underpowered but $30k difference is making me think. I suppose the question is, do I keep waiting for my GX?
Looked at one of these and a 300 but dropped the cash on an Everest Tremor with everything.
A company called Loaded Drawers are providing a 3rd row delete option that gives a smooth and strong floor to the cargo area that covers the 48v battery system.
Good overview.
Being a current Prado owner, to say this is a dissapointment is an understatement. Van towers will not like the fuel reduction, advantage over the competiton now gone
But I think this model is the one to get if you wanted one.
I think tojo has designed this for the US market and we just suffer the consequences. A spare on the rear door would allow a bigger fuel tank and or allow the 48v system to be mounted lower in the vehicle. I guess the aftermarket will continue to solve problems that toyota creates.
Really love to see you run a 2021 jeep trailhawk over some of the off-road obstacles. Would surprise many drivers of Japanese cars
It weird Every time you test the door slam on car reviews ads come up
Good on Toyota Australia, get what you can for it. Yes, prices are up significantly but the 6mth wait suggests plenty of buyers still see value.
No it doesn’t, the GVM includes full tank
@ you’re right I was thinking of tare. Cheers
The slogan at the back of car window: "Toyota The Smart Choice" Lol
Excellent objective review. Thank you Paul! Looks like no matter how cheap an upgrade Toyota does, people will go for looks instead of practicality. $100k for a mediocre car! Oh my! Keeping my 2.8 Fortuner which has the same engine, has rear differential lock, sliding seats and way bigger boot for half the price. And I have the luxury of putting back my third row seats with 4 bolts and 20 minutes! 😂Yes it’s less comfortable but hey at least it feels like a real 4wd. Everest looks very good value for money now. And I see heaps on the road.
The boot is a massive failure for sure.
Struggling to see why it costs this much?
It costs this much because that's what people are prepared to pay especially rusted on Toyota tragics
@ yeah I guess you’re right. Just crazy that cars are getting more and more expensive. And there’s not much to justify this price. Only a small jump to the Lexus GX
Put a deposit down on this a year ago. Thank goodness I got my money back and bought a Platinum Everest 😅
2.8 l with elec boost ( mild hybrid ) yeah that's the go !
Yes 11 hp like your lawn mower.
(If anyone knows of tests comparing the old and new models, I'd appreciate the links.)
But in general, I think Toyota is losing the plot a little...
The petrol hybrid would sell well in Australia, our obsession with diesel is waning
That iforce max engine in US? Yes please, that will kill diesels for sure
Diesel is for peasants.
Not obsession, it's what the manufacturers offer, if they only offer diesel, then people buy diesel

I think the word "disappointing" was used too much for this thing to be worth it's price. At $90k + 'amazing' should be the key word. Be interesting to see when you do the tow test.
Great external looks, apart from that a real disappointment for the price. Good review Paul!
Was hoping to get this new prado as my retirement vehicle, well guess I will have to search again.
You need to be in Neutral to engage diff locks.
