Nice to see a midsize American truck up to par with my bad ass Tacoma .. almost, time will tell if ranger is as durable! But I have to say , very impressed!99.5% of us working folks won’t get this rough . Mostly muddy roads on public managed hunting land .hey I’m starting to wary up to guys. I like the way you talk you russian. O teal Toyota’s run in Iraq . The sand don’t seem bother them ( Hilux) tough , also in Africa, Australia, God bless um, but these Toyota’s are tough, and the very very best mid heavy duty trucks build. I wonder why they not sold in North America? Damn rusty go get us one!!!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🍀
Note i can’t type , sorry. But on the tough as hell hilux, no match for our gun trucks . Put 2-3 24mm slugs Thur one and it’s dead. A .338 will go Thur one from stem to sturn . These are called machine killers I say too much sorrey🤣
I've never gone offroading and just got my first truck, and even I know you shouldn't rely and all these fancy electronic traction systems. Just don't be a shitty driver. Lol..the way I look at it, if people were doing this kind of stuff back in the day without all that fancy shit, there's no reason we can't do it now.

@@Miller_Lite Honestly I don't know. We're not sticking with this Ranger much longer because by the end of next year, we're due for a new gen Ford Ranger. This is only new to us and they made these Rangers since 2012 outside the US. There's a 3.0L V6 diesel they are testing for the 2022 model and as well as a 2.7L V6.
Vas Biliychuk man I think it’s because they are launching the bronco! They want all eyes on the Bronco! But you and I know that ranger raptor will sell like hot cakes!
I thought that the Taco would absolutely destroy the Ford off road, but that Ranger really holds its own! I would pick the Ranger myself for its combination of comfort, carrying capacity, performance and decent off road capability. Great video, Guys!
A lot of it is tires and driver. The rest only makes a minor difference. Ive driven a 2wd compact truck though shit full size 4wds got stuck in...did it with a FWD minivan once too.
I just took my new Ranger FX4 Lariat 3,800 miles (Idaho to Minnesota and back) and averaged 25.1 MPG. Very little freeway driving so my speeds were 70 MPH or under
A buddy is provided a new work truck every couple of years; most of his driving is on the freeway. His last rig was a Silverado, his newest a Ranger. He’s a good sized fella at 6-3 and 250. He indicates the Silverado was much quieter and more comfortable than the Ranger, and gas mileage maybe a couple mpg’s different.
Yeah I don't understand a lot of modern electronic traction systems on trucks these days. Lock the differentials and use your damn foot. Problem solved.
Great video TFL. Glad to see more Ranger videos. The section where the taco failed on crawl control and the Ranger went up at 1 Mph was a great test of traction management! Great work can’t wait to see more!
I’ve been a Toyota fanboy for a lot of years. Still own a Tundra and a 4-runner. But if I was forced to go buy a new midsized PU today it would be the Ranger. Thanks for the video guys and God bless.
@@c.r.rg9529 those are great trucks. I had a 95 that had over 300k on it when I sold it. My 08 Tundra has 220k on it and my wife’s 4Runner has 200k on it. You should have plenty of life left in yours.
I own the Ranger FX4 and use use it to haul around dirt bikes with some light off road trips as well. It's comfortable and the technology package is great. I've got almost 9,000 miles on it now and I love it. Originally, I was looking for a Tacoma, but thank you Ford for letting North America finally get this. The trail pimp does really get on the throttle to get you over obstacles, but obviously can't predict when you're going to hop over and it needs to lay off. For rock gardens, your better off actually driving. To me, it's useful when on less-maintained fire roads with bikes and gear in the bed and I want to go slower than normal.
I just bought a 2021 Ranger XLT Tremor in cactus grey, and I LOVE it!! It’s even more suited for the off road, with additional skid plates, a slight lift more than the FX4, and a bump up in suspension, and some general grabber ATx off-road stock tires. If the FX4 was a slight winner over the Tacoma TRD Pro, then the Tremor would be a hands-down victor! I never thought I’d be a Ford man, but there it is!! 👍🏼
I've owned a few rangers, brother had a 17 tacoma TRD off road, He complained it was always shifting, traded it for a highlander LOL. That being said, I would probably buy a tremor also.
@@BlackGT1999 if I didn’t want a narrower truck for some tighter trails I go on, I’d agree with you. Having said that, I suppose the narrower the vehicle, the more risk of tipping if it’s higher. They probably did what they (safely) could for height with the width of the vehicle.
Except neither of these trucks have a manual transmission LOL...I believe its an option in the Tacoma in certain configurations, but not in the one that TFL has :(.
Moby33 so you are saying you can get a manual transmission in a Tacoma 4x4? No way. Try and build it on Toyota.com website and see if you can find the automatic transmission delete/add 5 spd manual.
M. Black Ha, ha...okay, whatever you say. I guess I didn’t just buy my brand new TRD Pro 6MT in OH and drove it 2340 miles back to Socal. A Pro I ordered 3 months ago. If you don’t believe me, spend all of 30 seconds doing a RUclips search...plenty of 2020 Taco MT reviews already up on the net. Or don’t believe me...no skin off my arse. Cheers...now going to shift some gears in my fantasy MT 2020 Taco.
people will add them either way... if you put BFGs from factory, half will want to switch to Goodyear Wranglers, Toyo, Falken... that can best be left up to the end user... also MPGs
They wanted to keep the mpg numbers best they could. Also like the other guy said, everyone who wants more aggressive tires will put whichever ones they want on either way. But I do agree I wish it did come with more aggressive tires. But can’t deny that it is still great off road right out of the lot and still very smooth on road with these tires.
I agree, if I'm buying a off-road special truck, I want tires that match the truck. the fuel economy comments, if your for that buy a different trim level. Wranglers all season tires for the regular models, but when you upgrade to the Rubicon, they put aggressive tires on it. that only makes since.
Great video. I was more impressed with the Ranger than I thought I would be, especially with how fast it was. What about interior dimensions and usable space? That's important for some people families and gear to haul around. I haven't' been in the Ranger but I know the Toyota is quite cramped feeling inside, in my opinion.
My 16 year old is 6’3” and 235lbs. He fits in the back seat with adequate leg room. As for head space, I’ve heard on different reviews that the ranger has better roof clearance, and more comfortable seats than the Tacoma, but I’ve never compared them myself.
Great video. I wonder how well these gimmick crawl systems work once you heavily modify your drive train like re gearing or bigger tires ect. Just curious because you will never see someone use a system like this in the real world on like on the rubicon ect. That being said the Ranger was impressive all around compared to the Tacoma.
Your videos have gotten so much better in the last couple years. You guy have a really good production going! Great videos as always and keep up the awesome work! As for the CRAWL mode, I know you guys are talking about ratios, but Id imagine the programming makes a world of difference. If the computer has problems and dont know what to do, ratios dont matter.
I’d pick the Ford over the Tacoma if those were my options but I’d get the zr2 over both of them. Toyota is the loser here and Ford hasn’t even introduced the raptor ranger yet. The Toyota even still has rear drum brakes!
I have a 2019 Tacoma Pro with DAI....love the truck for exactly what I need...towing...daily commuter....weekend fun. Its super comfortable...dependable as hell...and looks fantastic. We are lucky to have so much choice....buy what makes you happiest.
Toyota always does good on there 4x4 systems . I love the Tacomas and what improvements they’ve made over the years! I’m a Ford guy for sure but have owned two Toyota trucks and one car . I will say that Ford Trucks are second to none though ! I’ve had Two F150’s , an explorer, a Winstar van, and two sedans . I’ve never had one of my Fords flat-out Breakdown on me because of engine failure, of course I’ve replaced alternators, dead batteries, belts, hoses, and other normal “wear out” parts on Fords but not often . My Fords have gone usually 250k-300k every time if maintained well . I just purchased a 2014 Black Ford Escape 2.0 Titanium for my wife, and we’re really loving it 👍
One thing people complain about is how much Ford's suck. They forgot, they only suck when you do not take care of them. 150k on my Ranger and still rolling.
I had an 86 Ford ranger that clocked over 4 times. It had 486,000 original miles on it. I put a mustang c4 trans in it, dual flowmaster exhaust, fully caged, lifted with 35's, 6" fiberglass front and rear fenders. Had the 2.9l v6 4x4, first year of electronic fuel injection. That truck was a beast and got me everywhere. I used to pull big 4x4 hummers and Chevys out of the ditches in the snow with my little ranger all the time. The little thing was amazing. I eventually sold it and my buddy dropped his mustang 5.0 302 motor that was stroked to a 331 in it.
Not going to lie, seen a few Rangers on Instagram with a lift and bigger tires and it looks absolutely incredible. If you put a few extra dollars into it, it's a stunning package.
@@josephwhiskeybeale I find this electronic gadgetry to be pointless. Even when they work as intended, they just take away from the fun of off road recreation. I want to be the one driving. Not just along for the ride.
I saw a ton of those bad boys when I was over in the Philippines, I also like the fact that all of the rangers over there are diesel and you can still get a manual trans as well. A base ranger 4x4 crew xab also can be gotten for 22k
@@waylon9764 it drives amazing. I got t boned In the first one pretty hard totaled the truck but I didn’t feel a thing so they are pretty safe too. I have the same truck now FX4 Cactus gray but they gave me the black pack this time I think it was around 40 K after I got all the warranties in the Ford care plan
"I know this truck is more expensive, slower, less comfortable, outdated, etc. ... But I really, really, really LIKE IT!" Tommy = Millenial Commentator! 🤣
I'm not sure what review channels are even thinking when they use the pro trim as the benchmark. It's a bling trim for a premium price. The price disparity really hurts the image of the Tacoma trim levels that are actually worth it.
Both great trucks but SADLY the Tacoma is showing more weakness as the years progress. It really needs a front diff locker and power to be around 325 HP and 325 TRQ. That would make it CLASS LEADING and worthy of the TRD PRO name.
Both trucks will get you where you want to go. Yes, Toyota has the reliability going for it and probably the better for 4 wheeling....but I got to hand it to Ford it feels more comfortable, quieter, and most of these trucks see 85% pavement vs off-road. Great review guys
I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 fully equipped, and I don't regret it on buying it. I love it, and for me, it looks more masculine, I don't care if it's not fast, cuase I won't be racing on it, and is really reliable for sure!!!!!.
No they don't. They need street based truck tires because 99% of them will never see any terrain that requires more than this. As an guy who had had tons of SUVs jeeps, and offroad trucks I rarely see new trucks in serious offroad conditions. And if you are of that 1% then you should get the tires you prefer on your vehicle. Toyota understands this better than anyone
michaeltom402 - Dude, how often do you go off-road? LOL! FJ's, Tacos and others are out there all the time. Jeeps are great off-road, but not reliable. They are easy and cheep to repair, but not better. I have an old Mitsubishi Montero, and I have gone for parts, tools, food, etc., over the same trails that broke their Jeeps, Chevy's and Fords sometimes six to eight times in one day, over the same trail that broke their vehicle. And yes, I know, Mitsubishi’s are not even in the same league as Toyota’s. Humorous too is they KNOW it. I drive and most Toyota drivers drive their vehicle to the events, trails, trips an get togethers, the Jeep and other vehicles mostly tow theirs there and back.
@@Erin-Thor sir I'm offroading now. I'm in reddington pass outside of Tucson. Everyone seems to be here this weekend because we got rain during the week and the trails are muddy which is a treat in the desert. I'm in my wife Trd pro with her stock setup. I could have taken my heavily modified 3rd gen 4 runner but her suv was clean and very pretty so I decided to get the mall dust off it. I wheel with some great guys and my boy who is in his heavily modified FJ cruiser is picking the trails...lol the 4 runner with stock tires is doing just fine. It struggles on the more advanced trails due to clearance but my spotter has not let me down and zero damage so far. Erin I don't offroad every weekend but I'm out alot in my truck, can am (which I wish i took today) , or the 3rd 4 runner. I agree with the jeep comment. We spent 4 hrs yesterday helping get a broken axle jeep back to camp. 2 hrs this morning getting another jeep shock tower fixed. I only used Toyotas not because they don't break but because they r solidly built and they always get me back home under their own power no matter how far I go wheeling or which 1 of them I take.
michaeltom402 - Cool! Toyota’s do break, they aren’t perfect... close though! My Monte is a 2002 full size Monte which I bought in 2001. It currently has 247k miles, and while no longer my daily driver, I still drive it regularly. I’ve almost bought an FJ cruiser several times, but the side visibility scares me. The Hummer-esk small windows freak me out. I was hoping that Toyota would give it a redesign, but they killed it instead. In 2020 they have multiple lines w TRD Pro models, and I am interested! I’ve owned few others; a Range Rover which was a maintenance nightmare, a Jeep which drove sweet off-road but like the RR several maintenance issues. It was just a Wrangler that I thought I could upgrade, but the many maintenance issues made me go back to my then 12 year old Mitsubishi for reliability reasons. And to be truthful, I don’t always take the same extreme line as my Jeep friends as mine wasn’t trailered there and has to get me home. If Mitsubishi still sold the Montero in the states I’d have bought several by now. Mine at 247k and 18 years old is showing it’s age. It’s been in the shop a few times, the first non-maintenance issue was in 2017 when the sunroof got stuck open, 2018 it had an engine manifold gasket leak, and a month ago the heater hose ruptured, that was it’s very first tow. But considering it’s age and mileage, and that everything is original save the ARB bumper, it’s been good to me. Especially considering the number of times it’s been airborn, LOL!
@@Erin-Thor I'm glad your vehicle has held up so many years and miles. My 3rd gen has 314,000 miles and still runs strong. I take it often on 2k mile wheeling trips and it always has made it back on it's on tires. The FJ would definitely be my upgrade vehicle if I get tired of the 4 runner. The blind spot is a very simple fix especially given what you get in a stock vehicle. Add some armor, winch, lift and offroad shocks with 35 tires and you can crawl will all the jeeps and heavily modded 3rd gen 4 runners. The standard rear locker and atrac works very well especially when you do maintenance on the transfer case. The FJ has plenty of on the road power which both your vehicle and mine lack.
Army Green has to be one of the coolest Toyota colours. I love my 11 FJ Trail Teams in that colour with the matched roof and blacked out trim. And the new TRDs fit very well with the colour
Lol... ford can add all the bells & whistles they want, in the end its structural integrity and longevity I want. You're not going to get that in a with a turbo V6
Ehhhhhhhh after 250k miles the Tacoma is still a tacoma but the ranger will have already needed rebuilds and replacements and probably 3 owners if it's even on the road/offroad after that and if it is what's the value going to be? Nothing just like all previous rangers
@@Bunkysworkshop don't get me wrong I loved the Toyota 4x4 I had, but it had rust problems, very disappointed,I wanted to keep it forever, I have had great luck with Ford trucks
Great little video & I’ve used your video for the last two new trucks I’ve purchased 2019 & 2020, but if you’re not in real rocky terrain but driving up hill in any slick surfaces, especially snow or loose gravel, sand, & dirt where your tires will slip easy use 4H not 4L & just go slow & you’ll have better traction.
Very fun video and great camera angles. I purchased a 2020 Ford Ranger XLT as my retirement vehicle and after one year of owning it, I am pleased with my selection. I also looked at the Tacoma but preferred the interior of the Ford. Both are solid vehicles for the Yukon.
Same for me, retired and bought my 2020 XLT. The Tacoma sitting position didn't agree with my old bones or I might have bought one of them. Love my Ranger so far, more vehicle than I need really, but fun up in the Idaho mountains and deserts..
@@robertpower09 idk, that turbo has no lag. I used to have a Saab, it was like a hairdryer until you got the revs up, then it turned into a jet engine. This Ford doesn't have that feel at all. It's consistently powerful and torquey
@@robertpower09 It is a long stroke 2.3L I4 engine. It has better low end then the V6 in the tacoma. Not to mention the turbo is small and quick to boost if needed.
Tacoma has bunch of known issues. My buddies Tacoma had major suspension and transmission work done at not even 40k miles on it. He doesn't abuse it nor off roads.
I know you can't get every vehicle for perfect comparison. I think the FX4 would be more comparable to toyota as off road and not the pro. Love u guys keep the vids coming.
I watched an interview with the chief design engineer for Toyota Tacoma. He said they are number one in the Australia outback where your life may depend on it. He said "any truck will take you anywhere but a Toyota will get you back."
I love my 2019 Ranger XLT FX4! I think it's funny when the Ranger was introduced Tacoma fans were all making fun of the "wimpy" 4 cyl saying how the Tacoma had a "powerful" V6. Well the 4 cyl just creamed that V6 in the drag race. Plus for the Ranger being less of an off road package compared to the Tacoma it did pretty well.
You guys do the BEST reviews and are VERY funny and also informative! I cant believe you dont have more subs than you do honestly! Ive been subed ever since you did the review on that yellow 09 cobalt ss (i own one and LOVE it!) and watch and thumbs up all your vids!
You are exactly right. I actually just bought a 2015 Tacoma (final 2nd gen year) because I can actually fit in and comfortably drive the 2nd gen. Toyota made too many sacrifices and compromises with the 3rd gen Tacoma for it to truly stay at the top.
They've been like that forever. At 6'3", I'll never own another small Toyota truck. The legroom is not bad but your feet are splayed out in front of you, it feels like a lifted Corolla. The idea is to improve ground clearance and water fording, but I'd bet less than 1 in 1000 owners utilize that even one time.
Good review. IMO, the winner in the following categories is: Styling: Tacoma Comfort: Ranger Performance: Ranger Reliability: Probably Tacoma based on track record and lack of data on Ranger Price: Neither - both are grossly overpriced
@@phorewhoresman1897 bought one fully loaded with less than 50 miles for 40k. Cheaper than the competition considering it also outperforms the competition with a little 4 cylinder
There's plenty of reliability data on the ranger if you look outside of the U.S. That Ranger has been around for like 10 years. Toyota is definitely more reliable and when you go to sell it it will be worth 5k-10k more.
Well a Ford Ranger XLT FX4 with full SXT package and Max Towing package is only $37,000 The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is $47,000 That’s a HUGE price difference
I hear that. Though I've not really seen the appeal of picking a Pro Vs Off-road package. The offroad package is practically 90% TRD pro, and sells 10k lower.
@@devinbender8428 kinda my point. The offroad package is 90% if not more of what the pro is. So, I'm not spending 10k more for a more rugged skid plate, slightly better shocks, and a non functional hoodscoop
@Jake Cox to be fair, the ranger had been absent from the american market for almost a decade, and the gm twins were too busy with the issues they were having, so the only "viable" option was toyota. Now they're all pretty damn close in terms of build quality.
Thumbs up for the awesome quality of work. As for me tho I will stick to my Jeep for off road adventures and use my old pick up truck for towing and hauling stuff. I save a hug amount of money that way and still get to enjoy the great outdoors. Good job guys.
I looked at both of these vehicles last month. I ended up pulling the trigger on a Tacoma TRD Off-Road instead of the Pro. The Ranger certainly is a nice driving vehicle, has plenty of power, and a lot more electronic niceties. There are a few things the Ranger is lacking though. The rear seat doesn't fold flat, it also isn't a split seat. You're missing a good amount of storage in the Ranger that you have in the Tacoma. The thing that really sold me on the Tacoma was parking it next to the Ranger. From the front the Ranger looked like a sedan. I just didn't think it looked all that sexy in person. For me, the Tacoma looks a lot more "trucky". At the end of the day they're both fine trucks and will do what you need them to. The Tacoma will be worth more when you get rid of it, and will likely need less time at the dealership too.
Nothing actually works? Looked like everything was working in the video. Everything functions just fine on my truck. Not sure what you're referring to? I've seen 30 year old land cruisers with less issues/broken shit than 2 year old Ford trucks.
I think it was set way to slow for the slope and ground condition. At the first setting the system was probably working against itself in a way, as weird as that sounds. I had a 14 FJ Cruiser with Crawl and if it's set too low it's definitely a jerky ride. When you have the speed set right it's actually smooth and moved forward at a steady pace. Sometimes I think these guys don't really know how to use these systems properly (not just talking about Toyota) and they just start pushing buttons and turning knobs.
I currently own a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. I looked at the new Ford Ranger and, even though it has impressive performance specs, it is a total write-off when it comes to practicality. I bought a pickup truck for its utility, not its 0-60 performance. You lose a lot of utility when you choose a mid-size over a full size pickup simply due to its smaller overall dimensions. The rear seat of the Toyota folds completely flat and provides a good deal of useful storage space if you aren't carrying rear passengers. To the best of my knowledge, the rear seat of the Ford doesn't even fold flat. This instantly quelled any interest I may have had for the truck. Another thing that is troublesome is the fact that the Ford is turbocharged. Boosted gasoline engines are inherently less reliable than naturally aspirated engines. Overall I am very happy with the Toyota. Its four wheel drive gets used regularly and it has proven to be a useful, reliable 4x4.
The desert air intake is functional and marketing. In Australia where they spend a lot of time in the desert, they are ingesting dirt through the fender mounted air intake. Cant hurt.
I had to used my foot Kids this days don’t want to do anything 🤣 Nothing beats a manual more fun, interesting and it makes you think! For talented people
I love love love the Ranger, but ended buying the Tacoma because I just had so many issues with my current Ranger. What did it for me was when my inertia switch was fried and my truck shut off on the highway and I caused traffic. That was the most embarrassing moment in my life... After watching and reading reviews for so many months, everyone kept saying Toyota last longer and you'll spend less in maintenance over the course of 15 years. This is my first Tacoma so I'm praying it'll last as people has claimed. I honestly don't even know why I'm still watching truck reviews even though I have a brand new 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro in my garage lol I guess I still got love for Ford.
I’m very impressed with the ranger but let’s be honest. The Taco has been around as one of the best off road trucks for a long time. They are very similar but the taco just looks better and has the boost in ground clearance. Toyota knows what works. It’s old school.
@@hungryhungryhummer okay so I've never known a taco to have good ground clearance unless you throw itbut you can always put a small lift kit on the ranger and give it as much ground clearance as you want and still have more power than the Toyota and yes tacos do look good me and my kids had a couple
@@Hydroexcavationlife yeah, but when does that little bit of extra power make a difference offroading? The whole point of this is to test both trucks from the factory. You can throw a supercharger on the Tacoma and get that extra power and still have better ground clearance. But then no matter what comparison you look at it doesn't matter when you modify it
@@Reoh so your argument is that I can put $1,000 lift kit on my truck and outperform the Toyota but you want to throw a almost $3,000 supercharger 2 compared to what I just built for a thousand
That ending was hilarious! TFL rocks

"I had to use my foot" off road problems in 2019.
How convenient that had to be.

Haha but at one point only 2 wheels had contact to the ground!
🤣🤣🤣
I've never gone offroading and just got my first truck, and even I know you shouldn't rely and all these fancy electronic traction systems. Just don't be a shitty driver. Lol..the way I look at it, if people were doing this kind of stuff back in the day without all that fancy shit, there's no reason we can't do it now.
I love how you park right in front of the rock clearance and you comment “that was close” like bro give him some room

Slow return. Best not to throw everything yet. They are testing V6's and diesel engines. I do believe the Raptor will come soon
Tylnorton isn’t it coming on July?
@@Miller_Lite Honestly I don't know. We're not sticking with this Ranger much longer because by the end of next year, we're due for a new gen Ford Ranger. This is only new to us and they made these Rangers since 2012 outside the US. There's a 3.0L V6 diesel they are testing for the 2022 model and as well as a 2.7L V6.
Vas Biliychuk man I think it’s because they are launching the bronco! They want all eyes on the Bronco! But you and I know that ranger raptor will sell like hot cakes!
Shughes hmm it very well could be, I forgot about the bronco
I thought that the Taco would absolutely destroy the Ford off road, but that Ranger really holds its own! I would pick the Ranger myself for its combination of comfort, carrying capacity, performance and decent off road capability. Great video, Guys!
A lot of it is tires and driver. The rest only makes a minor difference. Ive driven a 2wd compact truck though shit full size 4wds got stuck in...did it with a FWD minivan once too.
Not to mention 20k less expensive. The TRD pro should be put up against the roush ranger or raptor.
TFL, Several of the crawl systems I have researched say in the manual that, 1-3 mph is for Descending, and 3-5 mph is for Ascending. (MOMENTUM)
Yes this is true. Its in the Toyota manual
You can tell they’re not really off road enthusiast. Their lines and momentum are all off.

You obviously haven’t gone off road much. Even the best trucks will get stuck if you go slow. Especially with an unlocked diff.
@@Azula_7 that's exactly what they are testing! They arent there to show us their driving skills
“Trail Control” a solution to a problem no one had....or wanted
Yep. Couldn't agree more. Makes people be bad drivers.
Jay Trock agreed. And drives the cost up too.
More programming to break the system. Brilliant!
odeis5 yup. How about adding the money spent on that to things like locking front diffs etc instead of useless features.

@@justjackfromsc that's the hope. And sounds like you have had some great toyota experiences as well
I own the Ranger FX4 and use use it to haul around dirt bikes with some light off road trips as well.
God I LOVE the under car video angle. Really shows how the suspension and crawl control works!
Bought mine 12/19.....love it
I’d get an F150 tremor. Ranger tremor needs more (only getting a .8” lift over factory)
@@BlackGT1999 if I didn’t want a narrower truck for some tighter trails I go on, I’d agree with you. Having said that, I suppose the narrower the vehicle, the more risk of tipping if it’s higher. They probably did what they (safely) could for height with the width of the vehicle.
Low range, first gear, and let the clutch out seems like a much more effective crawl control system to me.
Except neither of these trucks have a manual transmission LOL...I believe its an option in the Tacoma in certain configurations, but not in the one that TFL has :(.
William Sevier think 2016 was the last year for the bolt action in the Toyota
Wrong. MT still alive & well in 2020 Taco.
Toyota really missed the mark by not giving the Pro some real AT tires
people will add them either way... if you put BFGs from factory, half will want to switch to Goodyear Wranglers, Toyo, Falken... that can best be left up to the end user...
This is an off road model of the truck. It should come with appropriate tires from the factory.
They are actually pretty good all around tires.
The ranger interior is much larger and more comfortable, but the dash and center stack feel a little cheap compared the Tacoma
My 16 year old is 6’3” and 235lbs. He fits in the back seat with adequate leg room. As for head space, I’ve heard on different reviews that the ranger has better roof clearance, and more comfortable seats than the Tacoma, but I’ve never compared them myself.

Just curious because you will never see someone use a system like this in the real world on like on the rubicon ect. That being said the Ranger was impressive all around compared to the Tacoma.
Very impressed by the Ford able to get up with the diff open. Says a lot for the individual wheel breaking to shift torque around. Very cool :)

I’d pick the Ford over the Tacoma if those were my options but I’d get the zr2 over both of them. Toyota is the loser here and Ford hasn’t even introduced the raptor ranger yet. The Toyota even still has rear drum brakes!

Just got an explorer, always wanted one. I love it, drives like a truck and the twin turbo gives me plenty of power if I need it.
Tommy " I would choose the Taco even though I know that the Ford is better". Great job Roman, you have taught him well.
Not going to lie, seen a few Rangers on Instagram with a lift and bigger tires and it looks absolutely incredible. If you put a few extra dollars into it, it's a stunning package.

Do this test again when they're over 100k miles.
Ford will be worth a buck and change by then.
Ford will still run circles around it.
Tacoma has bunch of known issues. My buddies Tacoma had major suspension and transmission work done at not even 40k miles on it. He doesn't abuse it nor off roads.
BloodyCrepe 900k miles no problem lmk when he gets to his first 100
@@bobgreta3280 I am happy for you but how does 900k miles on yours fix the problems on others?
I Love you Guys ✌️
I love my Ranger
Greatings from Germany
He picks it because of air intake that looks like a painted drain line?
I know you can't get every vehicle for perfect comparison. I think the FX4 would be more comparable to toyota as off road and not the pro. Love u guys keep the vids coming.
The true test is which one will breakdown when you're in the middle of nowhere...
Easy the ford , and the Toyota will hold double the value of the ranger in 10 years
I watched an interview with the chief design engineer for Toyota Tacoma. He said they are number one in the Australia outback where your life may depend on it. He said "any truck will take you anywhere but a Toyota will get you back."
Scotty " twin turbos with high pressure injection engines will not last" Kilmer
Jim H You must be talking about Landcruiser. Toyota dont sell Tacoma in Australia and Aussies love their diesels.
Either one can break down, they are machines built by imperfect humans
I love my 2019 Ranger XLT FX4! I think it's funny when the Ranger was introduced Tacoma fans were all making fun of the "wimpy" 4 cyl saying how the Tacoma had a "powerful" V6. Well the 4 cyl just creamed that V6 in the drag race. Plus for the Ranger being less of an off road package compared to the Tacoma it did pretty well.
They’re at altitude so forced induction helped the ranger but either way I’m sure the ranger would have won
Good luck with the turbos
@@ttsupra95 I love the Taco as best farm implement
I love my Ranger too. Good truck. Seriously underrated.
@@ttsupra95 proper maintenance dude
You guys do the BEST reviews and are VERY funny and also informative! I cant believe you dont have more subs than you do honestly! Ive been subed ever since you did the review on that yellow 09 cobalt ss (i own one and LOVE it!) and watch and thumbs up all your vids!
Ranger gang wya
You guys do a good job together. Well done!
Both are good trucks just think it’s cool that the ranger comes back strong
Maybe with the bronco on its way in maybe Ford could offer the Sasquatch Package on the Ranger?
At least the USA is getting the Ranger Raptor now with 2.7 Biturbo by the looks
I test drove the Toyota Tacoma and I got like I was sitting on the floor in it not as comfortable even close to being as comfortable as my ranger.
@@AscendingBliss that's obviously not the case lol
They did fix that on the 2020 model now you have power seats for up and down back and forth to adjust the height of the seat
pilot guy Jackie how many usually take him to realize and fix that problem? LOL go Ford Ranger!
I feel like all the crawl/terrain modes take away from the off roading experience. Plus it's another expensive feature that can break...
Not really if it breaks the truck wont move at all. (Dead computer)
Sounds like excuse because your favorite truck didn't win aka the Toyota
billy heaton win what dummy?
RagingTiger ........the comparison.....??? Are you confused on what kind of video your on?
Good review. IMO, the winner in the following categories is:
Styling: Tacoma
Comfort: Ranger
Performance: Ranger
Reliability: Probably Tacoma based on track record and lack of data on Ranger
Price: Neither - both are grossly overpriced
Resale Value: Tacoma Buying used..... Ranger
About $15,000 overpriced Tacoma
Ranger,I haven't seen an average price yet.
David Wethington considering you pay 5-10k more when you buy it new you should be able to sell it for 5-10k more.
Well a Ford Ranger XLT FX4 with full SXT package and Max Towing package is only $37,000
The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is $47,000
That’s a HUGE price difference
I hear that. Though I've not really seen the appeal of picking a Pro Vs Off-road package. The offroad package is practically 90% TRD pro, and sells 10k lower.
Luke Carmichael you don’t get a full skid plate on the off road tho. If I recall correctly.
@@devinbender8428 kinda my point. The offroad package is 90% if not more of what the pro is. So, I'm not spending 10k more for a more rugged skid plate, slightly better shocks, and a non functional hoodscoop
There is also a button to turn off the auto start and stop without buying extra parts.
There’s also a wire that you can unplug from the negative terminal on the battery and won’t affect anything else.
The one guy has a hard on for the Tacoma even though the ranger is better
@Jake Cox to be fair, the ranger had been absent from the american market for almost a decade, and the gm twins were too busy with the issues they were having, so the only "viable" option was toyota. Now they're all pretty damn close in terms of build quality.
Xlt fx4 extended cab can be had for 32k no where near 44k👍🏻
Agree, the dealers here are discounting to low $30K for a nicely equipped XLT 4x4. I believe that to be a fair price.
Yeah I found a couple in my area for 28-29
Random Adventures That 44k is because it is the Lariat, FX4, and black out package.
I just bought the Ranger XLT BEST DECISION EVER this thing is crazy fast and has balls. This coming from a tacoma guy
papa johns same here just bought a 2020 ranger and it is much better than the 2016 Tacoma trd off-road except in aftermarket support
Ranger just ate the TRD’s lunch
The infamous Andre drag race cry "wha?!...no...no...no" gets me everytime 😂
Love the Taco but that new Ranger is fricken sweet.🥰👍🏻
Thumbs up for the awesome quality of work. As for me tho I will stick to my Jeep for off road adventures and use my old pick up truck for towing and hauling stuff. I save a hug amount of money that way and still get to enjoy the great outdoors. Good job guys.
Ranger raptor in that military green is my dream truck
I have Trail Control in My 08 Fj Cruiser, it's called left foot brake modulation while keeping torque up with the right foot on the gas!
Trail pimp! 😂😂😂 Not sure if Ford will appreciate that name for its system.
Too misogynistic for them.. The SJW's would go nuts!
After everyone else is stuck, trail pimp picks up all the bitches.
Except nothing actually works on the toytruck
Nothing actually works? Looked like everything was working in the video. Everything functions just fine on my truck. Not sure what you're referring to? I've seen 30 year old land cruisers with less issues/broken shit than 2 year old Ford trucks.
@@motarded4214 I like to make up stories too.
@@motarded4214 sorry didnt mean to make the fanbois tear up resume your brand bashing
@@cjs4456 Oh no, some random neck beard on the internet doesn't believe me. What ever will I do.
That blue Ford is a good looking truck!
Looks like the ranger I bought! Love it!
That was weird. Crawl control just stopped working entirely. I don't care for the system but I think that needs a redo.
Needs to not exist, if you can't figure out how to apply the throttle for crawling over obstacles you probably shouldn't be driving.
The whole truck needs a redo
I own a 2013 Tacoma so I am a Toyota fan, but that Ranger is looking pretty competitive and I like the aesthetics too!
Had a Tacoma 2 years 15k and traded it in, got the same 29k I paid for it, pulling for Ranger, but know what a great vehicle the Toyota is!
Tommy: What's that called?
Andre: Trail Control
Tommy: Right, Trail Pimp. 😎
Me: 😂🤣
I currently own a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road.
Ranger is somewhat larger than any goat I have ever seen.
It'd come down to who has the better incentives for me. I've always had great success with my Fords but the Toyota reliability is legendary.
This is a great video. Full of great info and authentically funny. Well done, fellas.
The desert air intake is functional and marketing. In Australia where they spend a lot of time in the desert, they are ingesting dirt through the fender mounted air intake. Cant hurt.
Curious why Toyota doesn't make the fake scoop a real scooop
I had to used my foot
Kids this days don’t want to do anything 🤣
Nothing beats a manual more fun, interesting and it makes you think!
For talented people
motorola12slvr yes! So true I drive a manual and the only reason I want a ranger is cuz my car isnt good in the winter
Tommy is very biased. The Tacoma & Tommy got schooled!
I agree 💯#
