You should be able to get a 4x4 off-road Ranger for under 25,000; They’re slowly coming down. When I sat in the Ranger, it felt cheap, cramped, and old. It should have way more ground clearance. And more of a masculine look. The auto start/stop is dumb and annoying. And I’m not sure about the long term reliability of a turbo 4 cyl. The Tacoma feels higher and more like a truck. Plus the Tacoma has a high resale and is known for reliability. Also, it’s insulting that the Ranger doesn’t come with a spray in bed liner when the Tacoma comes with a composite bed. I also don’t like how the base Ranger comes with that dinky screen.

New Ranger all the way! Ford knows trucks better than any automaker. Fact. Ppl forget that Ranger ruled the "small truck" roost 8yrs ago ..before Ford Motor discontinued it.. as full size trucks were selling much better. Well, ppl now realize midsize trucks have a place. Many ppl dont need full size! New Ranger is def the midsize champ. 1 test drive ls all it took for me! Powertrain is amazing. Feature content & tech is way better than others in the class. Test drove Colorado & Tacoma. Both V6. Ranger pulled harder & was smoother than the others. Looks is subjective. I preferred FX4 crew cab Ranger in appearance/design. Black on black '19 Ranger XLT sits in our driveway . Now our son wants one!

I enjoyed your review, because you took it on a forest road, where most people would likely take it off-road and not some high-speed Baja desert run where 98% of owners would not be running it. I see alot of commenters on other review videos say 'for 5 bucks more you can get a full-sized F-150' but they're missing the point. I myself had an F-150 but my kids are grown and I no longer am carrying teenagers around in the back seats so this new Ranger suits me fine. I also had a Toyota that I kept for 258,000 miles so, like many others, am wondering what the long term reliability will be 🙄 ...

I will buy the RANGER. I've been driving a '97 Tacoma 4X4 since '97. It's time. My truck has been great, the 3.4L has been bulletproof. Not having an automatic transmission has made it last this long. That is the one thing about the RANGER that would be cool if they had a manual transmission like Tacoma has, but new Toyotas still have rear drum breaks. My truck is 22 years old -- it has rear drums. It's time Toyota stepped into the 21st century. Thanks for this. It's good to see how well this truck performs. I drive a 4X4 to make sure I get home from the places I go. As you were talking about crossovers, the trail would be challenging to the wrong vehicle... and then what? Who you gonna call? As for a bigger truck, I've been driving small for so many years, and the places I go are tight... I would mess up a big truck's paint in the first month. Peace

Driving up a Forest Service road is exactly the kind of challenge this truck (and most of us) will probably face on the weekends. Good choice to review it there. Been looking at the Tacoma for while, since maybe 1996. I bought a Ranger based on price (vs the Tacoma) back then. I think I might make the same choice again but based on exactly the same criteria you stated - ergonomics. I've sat in the Tacoma and just don't understand how they came to build it the way they did.

The taco has a very specific seating position because of the clearance. You either love it or hate it. However if you bought that 96 taco and still had it that beast would still be working great and worth anywhere between 9k and 5k (depending on condition). Can not say the same about ranger. If you're going to lease get whatever, if you want to buy and keep it, buy a tacoma.

@@dillonh321 Do not fear the 2.3 ecoboost. It has been used since 2015 in Lincoln models first. I'm a service writer for a Ford and the only issues we have seen with the 2.3 is this. What David said is true, some Focus RS models got the wrong head gasket installed at the factory. Ford recognized this, and made it right in production and in warranty. We have seen a few of 2.3 engine failure with the Mustang because of modifications beyond the limits of the engine or idiots flooring the accelerator in 5th or 6th gear and destroying(labouring) the engine. No MKC or Explorers have come back with 2.3 engine failures and some are racking up 60-80K with minimal to no issues. We don't see any common failure trend with this engine if maintained properly.

Very Interested in Buying one in the Future, but I would like to see the following changes in the future years:
+ Options for a Regular Cab (Two Seats, No Second Row of Seats) Many Older Rangers That I've seen driven around are Regular Cabs.
+ Additional Engine Options (The 2.3L 4C Ecoboost is not a Bad Engine, but like many others, I'd like to see more Engine Options, like the F-150's Popular 2.7L Ecoboost V6, the Fan-Favorite Coyote 5.0L V8, and Maybe for Maximum Towing Capability, the 3.5L Ecoboost V6.)

Not dissing the regular cab option, I agree it would be a nice thing to have available. But it may be worth looking at a supercrew model, since I think it's more likely they'll add engine variants than body style variants.

I'm actually deciding between the Ranger XLT Supercrew or the F-150 STX Supercrew, and I actually need some advice. I Plan to Buy in about a Year's Worth of Time. The Truck is primarily going to be an Everyday Driver, and I will unlikely or rarely Tow or Go Off-Road. I live out in Braves Country (Georgia), so Winter Storms are rare, but possible. I'm also planning to have my purchase be a Long-Term one, meaning I'm going to drive it until it goes. I'm leaning towards the F-150, but my mind may change if I can get enough convincing from Ranger or F-150 Users to seek the lower option.
      I need help knowing if:
      (For the Ranger)
      1) The Rear Seat Space in the Ranger is going to be enough for Adult Passengers. I'm mostly going to be driving by myself for everyday driving, but may have to take One or a Few Passengers from time to time (I Have to drive some members of my family around).
      2) Whether the 2.3L 4-Cylinder Ecoboost is enough for Both Everyday Driving and the Occasional Long-Range Drive without me having to visit the pump often.
      3) If the Five Foot Bed is going to be enough of a size for occasional use.
      (For the F-150)
      1) Which is the Better Engine Option for the Long-Term: The 2.7L Ecoboost V6 or the 5.0L V8. I've test-driven Both, and the V6 had the Acceleration, Fuel Economy, and Silent Cabin, while the V8 had the Power, Towing, and the Roar of a V8. However, I'm not sure if the extra $1,000 on the V8 is worth it compared to the Ecoboost V6.
      (Regarding Both Vehicles)
      1) If having 4X4 or the FX4 Package is entirely worth it. I've heard the common argument that "It's better to have it and not need it than to not have it when you need it", but I've also heard that "A RWD Vehicle with a Locking-Rear Diff is just as Capable as a 4X4 Vehicle." It's hard to choose, but I know the differnce between RWD and 4X4 is in the ballpark of $4,000-5,000.
I'm hopeful you can help me out with this.

@@SoundFX09 There's a lot to unwrap here and I just want to preface it with I'm by no means an expert. Take what I say with a grain of salt.
      Ranger:
      1) I only have experience with the supercab 6ft bed Ranger. Adult passengers (between 5'6" and 6'4") have fit in my backseat, albeit some had to squeeze quite a bit. I would assume that with the extra room afforded by a supercrew model it would provide ample room for any back seat passengers.
      2) The engine has been fantastic in the few months I've been driving it. It's smooth, it has the power to really accelerate if necessary, and it isn't drinking gas. I don't have exact numbers for you, but I drove from Northern Jersey to Rhode Island. It's about a 3.5 - 4 hour drive depending on traffic. I filled up right before leaving and had about 1/3 of the 18 gallon tank left. Not very scientific but that's the best I can give you.
      3) Whether 5ft is enough or not is completely up to you. It depends on what you want the bed space for. You say you don't plan on hauling too much, so it's entirely possible you'll never need more than 5ft of bed space.
      F 150:
Its a tough call. There's advantages to both, but if you're looking for a daily driver that is going to be more economical long term I'd recommend the ecoboost. You're going to get better mileage, and unless you have a particular affinity for v8 engines they are becoming less practical over time. While arguments can be had for the reliability of naturally aspirated engines, I think the daily driving feel and economy of the ecoboost makes more sense.
Both: Again ultimately depends on your usage. Where do you live, what kind of weather, what kind of road conditions etc. If you live in a city or suburb in the southern US that never deals with snow? Then you probably don't need it. Do you live in the middle of the mountains in Washington or Maine? Then it would probably be more helpful. But as many say, it's better to have it and not need it. It's not something you can conveniently add aftermarket, I personally think it makes more sense to get it.
As for the FX4 packages, unless you intend to drive your truck off road, and I don't mean some loose gravel roads, they're really not necessary. You say you don't intend to take it off road, then it's probably better not to spend that money.
Ultimately, buy the truck for what you want to use it for. If you know you won't ever off road, don't splurge on off road accessories. If you know you want that v8 roar, then get the v8. I can't tell you what is "worth it" because ultimately it's up to you what you want your truck to be.
My recommendation would be to drive them both. They're both good trucks and I'm sure both would serve you well, but obviously you want the truck that works best for you. Personally I test drove a 150, but as soon as I drove the ranger I was in love with it.

I've heard the ride is a bit firmer than the Tacoma or the Chevy versions of offroad trim midsize truck. BUT I equate this with the fact that with the Ranger you are not giving up ANY tow capacity and it still has a great Payload capacity. This is a tradeoff of keeping a suspension a bit stronger and tuffer to handle towing and hauling better at the expense of a bit more bumpy offroad, especially when running with no cargo. I applaud Fords decision to try to design the offroad trims WHILE STILL keeping the Utility specs of the base truck for hauling and towing UNLIKE MOST OTHER BRANDS WHO DO THIS. Yeah, it may be more cushy, but it is less Truck. If you want that, just get a Bronco or a 4Runner. Databyter

    1. I fit fine in a Tacoma and feel like I have enough room. I’m 6’2” but only if there is no moon roof. It’s all preference.
    2. Ranger does have 10 more HP, however the Toyota engines are FAR more reliable and since it’s not turbo, it will also last a lot longer then a 4 cylinder which is. (Over 120k miles etc.)
    3. He was absolutely correct about the ranger being better in gas and the 10 speed automatic transmission I’ve heard nothing but amazing things. Props to the ranger in this fashion!
    4. I’m not spending 45k on a mid sized truck PERIOD. Ford lost their minds. I’ll take my 35k and buy a fully loaded TRD pro in voodoo blue before I spend that much on a mid sized. Only a ranger raptor should be 45k. You can by a nice 4x4 F-150 for less! Smh....
