You have one of the best off-road testing videos on RUclips. Testing each vehicle’s traction limits in each mode, as well as the new camera angle on the high speed section is top notch content! I am impressed by this Ranger’s ability and value.
The problem with traction on the grades in ruts or holes is because the Ford does not compromise rear payload and towing capacity which means stiff leaf springs instead of the struts of other offroad centric trucks. This means the rear tires have a tendency to bounce a little when looking for footing in this type of test and that is all it takes to lose momentum. The answer is to have some more weight over the rear tires so that the suspension is somewhere in the middle of articulation, and not on the top, i.e. empty bed. It's not the system, and it's really not surprising. You just have to understand whats going on. The trucks that avoid this problem with struts can not haul as much, and cannot tow as much. The Ranger is uncompromised and designed t be used as a truck, so if you want traction. Throw a half cord of oak in back, or a few motorcycles, or some camping gear. Then it will grab better and bounce less and should have the power to deal with it.. I was looking at the Bronco, but then got sidetracked looking at trucks for better towing and payload. The Ranger Tremor is the perfect size and capability for me. But at the end of the day I went with a Subaru Wilderness for now, a softroader vs offroader, AWD vs 4X4, but 15K less and better mileage and it's going to do what I need for now. Still interested in the Tremor tho and Maybe I'll pick one up used in the future. Databyter
@@EngineAdventures Well, perhaps I should have said "useful" articulation. It is true that you could lift the rear end with a jack and go up several inches before the tires got off the ground. But those inches do not put enough weight on the ground for good traction. The articulation you want on a pickup, especially one with hard leaf springs, is weighted articulation. But regardless, I think we are in agreement. Just different ways of saying the same thing. It's good to have a light load. Even if the wheels were staying planted on the ground, they only had useful weight thru the tires a fraction of the time, and even that weight could have benefited from an increase in bouncy situation. Rear struts are far superior for offroading. But personally I'll take the Tremor anyway even with it's achilles heel. It's still damn capable, and with a bit more load the rear bounce is slightly less problematic. I also think it would have benefited from front lockers like they offer in the Bronco, and like some other Brands offer in their offroad trucks. You don't usually need them, but when you do... And given the Tremors rear stiffness, the front lockers could have been just the difference to make up for the issue. Great video btw, that must have taken hours and hours to film and edit. Thanks, you can really see what is going on there. It's a nice Truck. Databyter
All the latest trucks will shine off-road. Choose how you will be using it day to day, towing, hauling. Most trucks spend most of their life on roads. Just bought my 2023 xlt ranger tremor a week ago. Taking it to a state park this weekend to finally put that off-roading to the test. Very excited! Love your videos man, really an amazing review on the tremor and all it’s capabilities.
just picked up a used, '19 4x4 sport... has locking diff, but no trail modes... found this super interesting to see the difference in modes, that I won't have. Looks like the locking diff is the biggest difference maker...that and tires. Loved your video. I'm sure it was a bunch of work, not just shooting, but also editing. thank you!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I would say the locking differential is more important than the special drive modes. In general driver skill is more important than the computer based systems.
Awesome review, thanks for going through the work of showing all the drive modes. I'm in the market for an off road capable daily driver and this is the first review that really gave me an honest idea of what to expect from a vehicle.
Absolutely love this gen Ranger Tremor edition. Just ordered a '23 model last Fri! Test drove every midsized truck & there is no comparison. The Rangers proven Gen2 TGDI powertrain is smooth & powerful. You can even get performance upgrades thru Ford or Roush to get near 375hp! 10R80 tranny makes use of the engine perfectly. Shifts are pretty much imperceptible & always in the right gear. The ride is more comfortable & that's important on long trips. It's mpgs are better then the Tacoma & Colorado too. All in all it was a done deal after i test drove the Ranger! They had an XLT FX4 on the lot so i had to order the Tremor edition Ranger. Can't wait! MSRP was $45k as i spec'd it out. You could prob save more $ but I got all the tech stuff.
First vid of yours and now a new sub. Great job, man! I agree with Jarrod; best off-road test vid I've seen yet. Looking into trading (won't say from which truck, ha!) and stumbled across you searching for Tremor reviews. Thanks for the info! Definitely helps the decision process.
Wow. Great video. I was impressed you were able to actually get it stuck. Almost stuck perhaps. When you get the Maverick eventually , I’d like to see it climb the same hill. But wow. These prices are unbelievable.
That’s kind of the perfect storm for that truck it seems like the wheelbase the loose gravel and the depth of the hole was impossible for that little truck in its wheelbase interesting i’ve seen nothing but good reviews on the tremor
I've had one or two other vehicles get stuck in this spot, so I filled it in. The Ranger Tremor is very capable and I wouldn't discount it's abilities from me taking the worst line possible on a 20+ degree hill with deep holes in it.
I narrowed down to used ranger, but im torn if I should spend more on upgrading fx4 or buy tremor. Price has dropped since the new design model released. Great video! Keep it coming!
I have a 2021 Lariat Tremor, and I absolutely love it. It is very well behaved, smooth and quiet on road, and does really well off road. I don't do any really serious off-roading, but on the trails around the lake, it has no problem, even after a rain when there are mud holes everywhere. It does good on fairly steep hills, wet grass, etc. Even with the running boards on, I haven't found any place that I need to go that I can't. If you want to do serious, technical off-roading, then you are going to need to upgrade either one anyway.
Depends on what you're doing. Off-road, the TRD Pro hands down. On-road or towing, the Ranger Tremor hands down. Personally I prefer full size trucks because the fuel mileage is about the same, but they are much more roomy and have higher towing capacities.
@@EngineAdventures thanks, yes, planning to off road and camp, I live in Denver, so many trails here. Also, I think accessories market is ridiculous for tacoma!
Great review. About 10,000 difference between it and the FX4. FX4, new suspension upgrade, proper AT tires. As a turnkey truck though it’s very nice. That rolling back in crawl control, will increase the pucker factor, that’s normally the problem with a manual no way should an automatic behave like that. The Toyota might make a lot of noise but it’s not going to roll back. I like both trucks. Great time to be a 4x4 enthusiast.
Thanks Paul! People like to bag on the new trucks, but straight off the showroom floor the factory offroad trucks today will outperform just about anything that has come before them.
It’s not that big of a difference. It’s pretty easy to put some shocks and 32s on. I’m going to be doing that with my Fx4. I have a 2021 lariat Fx4. I wanted the lariat for all the creature comforts but if I had gotten the tremor too it would have put me over budget. This way I can add shocks and tires as I go. I’ll probably even get fox 2.5s which are a step better than the ones that come on the tremor. I don’t really care about the switch bank in the dash. But the Fx4 has all the same electronic programs and locker.
It's a nice truck. Not bad. ZR2 still impresses me the most. Only issue there is the questionably reliability. Front locker of the ZR2 is a nice option to have.
Funny you should ask, I'm currently working on a full size SUV comparison and the one after that was going to be the midsize truck segment. The problem is that it's taking me about 10x longer than doing a single vehicle video. I'm hoping to finish the first one in two weeks. The one after that will probably be another month or more. As far as the numbering system goes, it's so subjective that I decided not to do that. RTI, approach, departure, break over, ground clearance, wheel travel, articulation etc. are all great numbers, but they honestly don't determine how well a vehicle does off road. They give an idea, but other things that are hard to measure are what really make the difference. Balance, center of gravity, throttle sensitivity, torque curves, torque converter application, etc. are all things I can't give a value for that will greatly affect the off-road driving experience. Thanks for sharing, and it's good to see more interest in a big comparison video between a bunch of vehicles in a class!
@@EngineAdventures you could even do a spreadsheet with a row for each vehicle and a column for feature, you summary of how they performed and then a column on how to find the full video
If there's enough interest in it, I'll consider it again. I will have the links to the full videos in the video description of the shootout videos. Thanks again for the input!
Ford did a good job with the 21 Ranger Tremor. I just traded in my 13 F150 FX4 for one. They gave me almost 20K for my F150 so I was more than happy to get the Ranger. Ive been looking for a smaller truck.
I do like the Ranger quite a lot. It actually has a decent payload for the midsize truck market, and it even beat out some of the 1/2 tons I've tested in the payload category.
You can fit 33’s on this truck. You have to buy aftermarket intrusion bars for the front end. Switch them out in minutes and you’re good to go with 33’s
Or just cut them off like most people do. You have to cut the back ones off anyway to get the aftermarket ones on. The front you have to take off the bumper. Such a pain in the ass.
Does anyone know if you have to get things like, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control etc. recalibrated of you put in a leveling kit ? Never had a Lariat before !!! lol
I feel like the fx4 lariat was the better choice over an xlt tremor. Sure brakes and suspension might need some work. But aside from suspension, it's just stickers. Besides I'm short so I gotta climb in to the fx4 like it's a monster truck haha
Yeah, it just depends on what you're looking for. The Tremor is much better at higher speeds off pavement, the FX4 is more than capable enough for most people (myself included).
I want one. I am thinking of trading in my huge tundra for one. I think for how I use my trucks the smaller size is where I want my money to go. I do sleeping in the back of my tundra which is very nice. I just think I'd be so much happier in a smaller truck on the daily though and in the woods.
Sorry late to the party, good informative video as far as the offroad modes etc.. my question for you thou is the line the ranger had problems with have you tried other mid size trucks on it like the frontier, Colorado and tacoma? I mean in the reall world you just pick a different line or even try to air down a bit if you're going driving on terrain like that all day.
Thanks for watching and commenting! While the test is on the same hill, the terrain is constantly changing from rain and being driven over. I do remember one other vehicle getting stuck in the same spot but I don't remember which one. I don't fault the ranger at all, two wheels in the air and one buried in a hole. The ZR2 is probably the only other vehicle in this wheelbase range that had a chance at making it out of that spot.
at 10 min segment it shows how much Toyota Advance Track works better, it applies the brakes on the spinning wheel much better and for longer . At least it does in my FJ.
Just worked on a Tacoma TRD Pro video, should be live on Friday. It's incredible how well Atrac works, and the different drive modes actually make a difference.
The Ranger Tremor is more Trail Boss than ZR2. I would like to test a Ranger Raptor on this hill when I get the chance, that's more comparable to a ZR2. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Most of the videos I see on any off road trucks are preformed by drivers who have NO experience driving off road..if your not familiar with the truck please leave it to someone who is!!
Great question, 2 very different trucks. Personally I prefer the Frontier's power train. I don't like turbos as they aren't as linear as N/A. The Frontier is a basic truck, which has an appeal in it's simplicity. The Ranger has a lot of tech, but for me it's too much. The Ranger tows and hauls better (just an assumption based on payload capacity and driving characteristics, the Frontier I tested didn't have a receiver so I couldn't tow with it). On road empty the Frontier might have a small edge in ride quality.
@Paweł Żmudzki you are correct! I must have typed it in wrong. I have a picture of it in my story here: www.car-revs-daily.com/tag/2021-ford-ranger-tremor-off-road-review-by-matt-barnes/
It seems it just needed a tiny bit more momentum to get over that bump. Ford even said at a Raptor event I went to that trail control is really designed for a minimum of 3-5 mph for climbing, the lower speeds are for hill descent.
Absolutely, this was the first time I had a vehicle with a rear locker where I actually had to change lines. I always try the hardest line first and work my way to an easier line if I don't make it.
@@Herbymac0811 do you know what limited slip means? When the ranger (and every other conventional 4x4) is in 4h or 4L the center is locked, no speed variance whatsoever. Many rangers have a rear locker, again no speed variance between wheels. The front has an open center but can use the brakes to distribute drive across that axle. Very few modern vehicles have mechanical limited slip, they are either open diffs or open with a locker.
I would be happy with the Torsen, but that’s not even an option on the Ranger Tremor. From the factory, there is no option other than an open front diff on the Ranger.
Check out my Tacoma TRD Pro video if you haven't seen it. The TRD Pro is smoother and more comfortable all around when off-road. Capability is similar between the 2 but the Ranger has better dimensions (a little smaller all around). On-road driving characteristics, towing, engine, and trans are all much better in the Ranger.
I'd say I have to agree with you in many cases. The computer is much better at braking individual wheels than I am (the best I can do is use the e-brake to brake the rear wheels separately from the front).
A little bit of both. I stayed in it until it was clear the ranger wasn't going to make it. Staying on throttle longer wouldn't have done anything unless for some reason the Tremor version is totally different from the other two Rangers I've driven.
The goal is to find the limits of the vehicles, I purposely take the hardest line possible that I think I can do without damaging the vehicle. You're right on making the hill worse. Check out one of my videos from a year ago, while all the damage hasn't been from me, I've certainly torn it up a bit. I've even taken a pick and shovel to the hill a few times to remove large rocks and smooth some of the transitions for vehicles with lower clearance.
@@EngineAdventures since the bed is aluminium ... It's light. I put 4 50lb bags of chicken feed in the back of mine and the articulation is great along with traction.
Yeah it has a pretty stiff rear end, I didn't think of adding weight to get better articulation, but that sounds like a great idea on the vehicles with stiff suspension.

Personally I like the fullsize trucks more, but I know that's not how everyone feels.
Thank for the video
Thanks for watching!
@@EngineAdventures yea two wheels up is a issue, ok just curious ranger definitely seems capable
It is very capable, more than most people will ever need, even those who do moderately difficult off-pavement travel.
at 10 min segment it shows how much Toyota Advance Track works better, it applies the brakes on the spinning wheel much better and for longer . At least it does in my FJ.
Just worked on a Tacoma TRD Pro video, should be live on Friday. It's incredible how well Atrac works, and the different drive modes actually make a difference.
Let's be honest... the Colorado ZR2 destroys the Ranger Tremor at off roading. The Ranger really struggled on this hill.
The Ranger Tremor is more Trail Boss than ZR2. I would like to test a Ranger Raptor on this hill when I get the chance, that's more comparable to a ZR2.

If the ranger didn’t have those stupid intrusion beams on the front it would be a lot easier to bump up to a 33 or 34.
Yeah, someone else mentioned there is an aftermarket solution that moves those backs bit to fit bigger tires.
Great 👍
Thanks Gio, do you prefer the longer content or is it too much?
@@EngineAdventuresthe longer video content is better. We can watch the vehicle performance in great detail. Very informative!
Awesome thanks for the input!
Most of the videos I see on any off road trucks are preformed by drivers who have NO experience driving off road..if your not familiar with the truck please leave it to someone who is!!

Hot Pepper Red!?
How does this compare to a 2020 Frontier Pro-4X with the new power train?
Great question, 2 very different trucks. Personally I prefer the Frontier's power train. I don't like turbos as they aren't as linear as N/A. The Frontier is a basic truck, which has an appeal in it's simplicity. The Ranger has a lot of tech, but for me it's too much. The Ranger tows and hauls better (just an assumption based on payload capacity and driving characteristics, the Frontier I tested didn't have a receiver so I couldn't tow with it). On road empty the Frontier might have a small edge in ride quality.
@@EngineAdventures awesome content and reply, thank you!
Thanks for the support!
What are the specific on tire size? Want to buy for my 2.5 leveled 2020 Ranger XLT.
They are general grabber A/Tx 265/70R17 which is about 32" diameter by 10.4" wide
Edit: fixed tire size
@@EngineAdventures awesome! Thank you. Great channel btw
Thanks for watching!
@@EngineAdventures Are you a 100% sure ? I’m pretty sure it’s 265/70 r17. But please correct me if I’m wrong.
@Paweł Żmudzki you are correct! I must have typed it in wrong. I have a picture of it in my story here:

Where was this shot at?
Utah
Great review, very informative

The only thing I don't like about the new Ranger, there's no drain plug in the transmission. Why Ford, why??
Seems like it's getting harder and harder to work on your own vehicles.
Thats been going on since the 90s by all manufacturers
I think if you had set the cruise to about 3mph you would have made it.
It seems it just needed a tiny bit more momentum to get over that bump. Ford even said at a Raptor event I went to that trail control is really designed for a minimum of 3-5 mph for climbing, the lower speeds are for hill descent.
sometimes you need a different line my guy
Absolutely, this was the first time I had a vehicle with a rear locker where I actually had to change lines. I always try the hardest line first and work my way to an easier line if I don't make it.
These tests are becoming exhausting lol... I feel like auto manufacturers could/should stick with just plain old 4-hi and 4-low
Haha, try filming and testing all those modes. Just about doubles the time it takes to film vs filming a more normal system.
why is it so hard for companies to offer 4 wheel drive that ONLY offers true 4 high or 4 low with automatic lockers?
What do you mean "true 4h and true 4L"?
geepuller1
I mean when you shift into 4 wheel drive there shouldn’t be any limited slip crap. All 4 wheels should receive equal power!
I wanted one until I found out that you can't get the front limited slip diff like you can on the F150 and SRW Super Duties.
While the Torsen is my favorite style of diff, it's quite capable with that.
I would be happy with the Torsen, but that’s not even an option on the Ranger Tremor. From the factory, there is no option other than an open front diff on the Ranger.
Vs Tacoma trd pro?
Check out my Tacoma TRD Pro video if you haven't seen it. The TRD Pro is smoother and more comfortable all around when off-road. Capability is similar between the 2 but the Ranger has better dimensions (a little smaller all around). On-road driving characteristics, towing, engine, and trans are all much better in the Ranger.
I THINK THE COMPUTER ( OFFROAD TRAIL CONTROL ) WORKS BETTER THAN YOU DRIVING!
I'd say I have to agree with you in many cases. The computer is much better at braking individual wheels than I am (the best I can do is use the e-brake to brake the rear wheels separately from the front).
Yeah you let off throttle when you need to stay in it. Hopefully you are doing it for demonstration purposes and don't actually drive like that
A little bit of both. I stayed in it until it was clear the ranger wasn't going to make it. Staying on throttle longer wouldn't have done anything unless for some reason the Tremor version is totally different from the other two Rangers I've driven.
👍😎🇺🇸🔥!!!!

Getting mine for 44k
All that tech and it can't handle a little hole...50,000$ well spent. 😁
Every vehicle I've tested in that hole hasn't made it out, my guess is the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe I get soon will be able to do it though.
With each try... Your digging the hole deeper. 😐
It's not the truck... It's the driver
I want to see the new 2022 Nissan Frontier.
Me too! I'll see what I can do!
