I have a built 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road so my answer is easy. Not quite as easy to customize as some "other" trucks, but not as expensive either. One point worth considering is, how negotiable are Ford prices vs Toyota...specifically Tacoma? Great review, I agree with all points made...keeping my Tacoma for a few more years/decades 👍🏼
Articulation is useless when it comes to moose test. Specially when you drive in curve lane with cargo at the back at 40 to 60 miles per hour. Toyota frame sucks and bounces.The frame of toyota is weak compare to ford very strong. I am sure you already watch Competition of F150, Dodge, Chevy and Tundra. Tundra frame is very weak that is why in the test it bounces so hard
I own a Ranger Lariat FX4 with upgraded Fox shocks, Goodyear offroad tires, and rock sliders. My last truck was a TRD Pro. Love them both. Ford better on road and TRD a bit better offroad. If I had to buy again, I would go Ford, but only slightly.
I have owned both as well. I would never ever get a tacoma again. For me it was the horrible seating position and the horrible site line out the front. The windshield on the Tacoma is so small when I pulled up to red lights I couldn't even see them. Resale is sick on Tacoma, but I need a decent vehicle. Ranger no brainer for me.
@@drn13355 Having driven both extensively I'm in full disagreement. The seating position is only a no-go if you know next to nothing about control ergonomics (set it up like a sports car). Ranger has had horribly balanced front to rear dampening that gets only worse with speed, on both the FX4 package and Lariat. Which pissed me off as I had experience with the previous euro-rangers that did not have this messed up suspension issue at 100KM+ speeds. The tacoma may have a more "trucky" suspension, but I can say that compared to the ranger, your ass, hands and shoulders weren't screaming three different things at 65mph+; especially over crests. I've not noticed your issue with overhead cross-section lights. Maybe you should try sitting correctly with your seat pulled forward till your knee has a good bend without pressing the pedal, and almost full extension on the floor, your wrist can sit at the 12'o clock position with your shoulders against the seat, and the seat bottom at as much of an decline (front up, rear down) as possible focusing most weight on your butt. This will one correct the issue with sight line, but also allow you to have better leverage on the controls with less movement, and more connection to the vehicle via parts of the bottom that are most sensitive to inertia. I wanted to love the ranger because of my previous experience with them in Spain and Queensland (along with the discounts back here in the U.S.), but fucking Ford had to fuck up an old chassis with messed up suspension, a drivetrain combo I don't trust for any work outside of delivery vans and weird option lists than really aren't clear to our more less familiar customers to muddle the waters on what your are getting. I'd rather take a Canyon/Colorado or Tacoma at similar price point than any ranger. That's without getting into the lazy job they did with interior space efficency, the utility of the truck bed, and the fact that out of all of the crew cabs, the ranger was the only one (with throwing the ridgeline for good measure) who's crew cab should have been called an "extended cab with crash support".

I owned a 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road and got rid of it and got the Ranger Lariat FX4 2020. The differences are vast. I am 6'3 and I actually fit in the Ranger. The comfort level in the Ranger compared to Tacoma is enormous. Powertrain is better in Ranger. A major SP for Tacoma was resale which is great, but Trucks overall are so popular in USA right now they are all holding their value. I will stick with Ranger for now.
I drove a ranger tremor 75k hard miles working in extreme remote areas in California while working for pg&e. The truck is a company truck but damn it never failed me. That's through mountains and rocky hills, slippery wet rainy roads, snowy mountains etc. It is extremely amazing. Has built in navigation systems etc. Everything that most people need.
Bought a 2021 Tremor, absolutely Love it. Plenty of Power, thought about the Tacoma but dated body style and tow capacity is why I opted for the Ford. Plus I’ve still got a 25 year old Ranger that’s still going!

Ive got one that had that many miles by 2001...lost track now, but it will start -20F after sitting 4 months, no lifter tick or anything. It's got the pushrod 4.0L v6 ohv. 2wd manual trans, no power ANYTHING but its an XLT. Go figure.
Good points - I do think the TRD Off Road (4x4) is the smarter choice for about 10K less than the Pro. I purchased my (2019) TRD OR 4x4 Double Cab new in Jan of '19. I have put 93K miles on it so far - with many of those miles in 4WD. I own a horse farm and have indeed found this truck to be VERY impressive off road. However I find it just as impressive on road, obviously I drive a LOT. The ride is nice, the storage is WONDERFUL, and the fact that is has been totally dependable means a lot. As for dependability, we have another Tacoma - a 2002 TRD OFF Road 4x4 (my son's truck now). That truck is put through he wringer as well...it now has 245K miles, and has had nothing other than routine maintenance (timing belt was replaced - though it did not fail, we just did it a maintenance recommend)...Toyota has earned its reputation for reliability - at least in our house.
This vid is outdated. Ranger tremors off the lot will cost you a lot less and have far more rebates and most sell at MSRP. Tacoma is the opposite. Some are selling for damn 55k now.
Just purchased the 21 Ranger Tremor with the Lariat trim in cactus grey. Had it about a week now and it's a blast to drive. Has plenty of power, drives smooth, has a cozy yet also surprisingly roomy interior and yeah, it looks great. Have received many compliments. I have a few niggling complaints but certainly nothing major. One is I wish it had a PNRDS readout beside the shifter as well as the dash. Another is I can't believe Ford didn't include a tailgate damper with the Lariat package. I do love the spray-in bed liner. Very professionally installed with no bubbles or smears and the Ford logo on the rear bulkhead is a nice touch. I'm surprised at how quiet the cab is when going 75 on the interstate. Infotainment unit is very easy to use and has everything you could think of lol. Looking forward to taking it four wheeling over the holidays. All in all I am very pleased with this truck. Great job Ford! (Edit - I meant a lighted PNRDS. Can't see it at night)
Right. People fanboy over "reliable Tacoma" yet they got weak frames that rust to hell and back and is an off-road vehicle but yet it has plastic bumpers. Tacoma transmission also sucks. Ranger may have a 4 banger turbo but it will be cheap to replace compared to other engines even if it only last 150k miles. Plus Tacoma engine is dated.

Not paying the price of a 3/4 ton for a mid-sized truck when I can just buy a used Ranger for much, MUCH cheaper. Look up replacement engines, the Ecoboost is cheap compared to bigger engines like V6s and V8s.
The Tacoma is a great truck, no doubt. However, neither truck was actually tested anywhere near their limits in this video. The Ford very likely did not "NEED" to have the rear locker engaged to finish that hill climb. Also, the Ford doesn't just "slightly" exceed the Toyota in towing and payload capacity. The Ranger Tremor has a payload capacity of 1430 pounds versus 1155 pounds for the Tacoma TRD off road when both are outfitted as they were in this test. The Ranger also offers 7500 pounds of tow capacity, yes, even in Tremor trim, versus the Tacoma's 6400 pounds. In this class of pickup 275 pounds of payload and 1100 pounds of towing is not insignificant. At the absolute limits the Tacoma will no doubt offer just a bit more off road capability. In the real world where those limits will almost never be reached the Ranger is the better truck. The guy doing the test, as almost everyone who drives the Tacoma does, commented on the unnatural and uncomfortable seating position of the Tacoma but still states he would choose it. Dude, pull the bias plug and let that stuff drain. The Tundra is comfortable and livable. The Tacoma is so uncomfortable that it feels like a different company designed it. Whatever truck you personally choose to drive is just that, a personal choice. But when you are reviewing vehicles it's time to leave your personal opinions at the door. The Tacoma is the more capable truck 3 percent of the time and in situations 99 percent of buyers of either truck will never get themselves into. The rest of the time the Ranger is the better truck. Perhaps more unreliable but while it runs I'd take the Ranger.
Absolutely true! I've owned a '19 Ranger XLT FX4 for 4yrs thats been impeccable. I love this generation Ranger so much i just ordered a '23 Ranger XLT Tremor last Fri. Wanted to get the best edition of this Ranger before the all new '24 Ranger debuts fall '23. You cannot beat the proven high performance Gen2 TGDI powertrain in Ranger. It's very understressed actually. It's actually good for up to 400hp! Just an awesome truck. Home run Ford!
I’ve tested both, extensively. Decided on a TRD pro Tacoma with a manual transmission. While the ranger’s turbo power plant scoots, I just don’t feel good about long term reliability of the boosted ranger. FYI, if you opt for a manual trans Tacoma, you lose a handful of features. No JBL, no crawl control, no terrain management. Well worth it for me, I hate that automatic Tacoma trans.
Ranger is much more of a value. The Ranger bumpers are steel with plastic covers and the electronic-locking rear differential is limited-slip, so it'll engage even if you don't lock it. Plus, it's A LOT more capable in towing & payload.
Nice review! I just got a Tremor and LOVE it...it was a significantly better price. There is an available tuner (actually From Ford) that significantly boost the horsepower and torque. Both are great trucks I think the Ford made more sense for me.
It seems like every one is having a whining diff in there 19 20 and 21 tacoma's. Most of the top magazines have taken the tacoma off there best buy and replacing it with the ranger.
All Rangers, every trim line have front and rear (Steel Bumpers) just middle plastic incents. Also All Rangers, every trim line has a full size spare tire.
Been eyeing these up. In my area, comparing xlt tremor package to trd pro package is a $12,000 difference. Fuel economy is better in the Ranger. I really love the Taco, but I will probably end up with the Ranger due to economics
Plus with the ranger you getting better payload, rear disc brakes, more towing and better sitting position. Not sure what you ended up purchasing in the end. To be honest you can't go wrong with either

So much hate in these comments. Larlos Cago did a great job and looks great doing COVID desert chic. Tacoma v Ranger... the Ranger is the better value, but that Tacoma is so over-engineered. 3 out of the past 4 Fords that I've had have required multiple trips to the dealership for fixes, though. That said, this is a hard choice here.
Let's say my new ranger being an FX4, 2019, has gone through really rough terrain with out as much issue like he showed for having to put the rear locker on. Not to say he wasn't fair, I wasn't there to see the hill in person to see how each of the tires reacted on the hill.
As for mine going to the dealership...all due to the dealership not doing a thing on fixing it till recently and that's after showing a few videos of the radio at times not displaying the information. That's just a bad radio and nothing to due with the mechanics of the truck.
I think Toyota's reliability is a misconception, people who buy them expect them to last long so they take care of/ and drive them as if they are keeping the vehicle for 10+ years. If you proform the required maintenance, any vehicle will last 200k plus miles.
Save yourself money and get the FX4 ranger or the TRD off road taco. Either truck would be great, I personally do not like the Taco. I drove one for 2 years for work, don't like how the seat sits mostly. Out of these two, I would go ranger. However, I will stick with my 4 runner.
I wanted a Tacoma so bad a couple years back, but the acceleration and seating position were a let down. But this ranger seems to solve all that. Might get one of these once my little fiesta st quits (which might be never bc it keeps on taking abuse). 😂
I’m buying a tremor and I also have a fiesta ST. I love my FiST lol, it’s my second one after someone totaled my first one. I honestly love it as an all around car and daily driver.
I prefer the ranger, its better in most categories. Rangers also have historically been great trucks, very sturdy. As are Toyotas but the Ford is just a better truck
i have a 2020 ranger XLT but its the just the Fx4 "1 the bumpers aren't plastic! 2 with the Tacoma having a v6 you would think better towing and load capacity but no was rather disappointed but the ranger vs Tacoma also in mpg my ranger in city is about 18-19mpg but on the highway using cruse control 24-25mpg! so that to me is also important also i love the gauge cluster where you can also see the power distribution and degree of angle your at! which is sometimes handy" hearing about all the new goodies on the new ranger with the tremor package im actually thinking about trading my Fx4 in for the tremor but im also hearing the ranger raptor is possibly coming to the US?
Weird statement to make that you didn't need to use the locking diff with the tacoma. You also didn't stop in the middle of the hill with the taco like you did with the ranger.
I drove both, wanted to love the TRD pro, but couldn’t stand the constant shifting and I didn’t want a 4cyl turbo, so I ended up buying a 2023 pro 4x frontier. I can honestly say though, in this day, you can’t really go too wrong. Most trucks are going to be pretty reliable. It just comes down to preference
Thanks for the great video. I revere the Toyota's performance off-road. It has excellent approach, departure, and clearance. The concern I had was with the seating arrangement in the Tacomas. Some reviews noted the smaller cabin size and overhead clearance problems with the roof for those over 6'. One guy of about 6'3" had to lean his head. That doesn't look comfortable. The Ranger has plenty of roof clearance for taller drivers - so I got that one. It's a great improvement over my 1993 Ford Ranger. That old model was much smaller with all-manual controls to roll down the window, shift, and adjust seating (very limited). There was no computerized video of the rear. There were no sensors and warnings embedded in the 1993 Ranger like today's models. So, I am overwhelmingly impressed with the modern 2022 Ford Ranger Tremor. The Toyota truck that would likely fit me better is the Tundra Pro because it can accommodate bigger drivers (e.g., former football linemen or linebackers). The problem is that it's awkward to drive bigger trucks in crowded Phoenix. So, I prefer the mid-size models for daily driving. But I took the Tremor up to rural Eastern AZ last week up the mountains. It did great on a very rugged dirt road partially flooded out with many ditches and bumps. It gets muddy with snow up there in elk and bear country of Arizona's higher mountain ranges. That road was built upon an old horseback trail of the 1800s - lol. But the Ranger handled it while listening to the theme song from "the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" on the blue-tooth-connected iPad.
Whats missing in most of these reviews is how does a specific vehicle feel when driving rough washboarded roads? Does it just feel like a truck version of Ford Focus or does it feel like its gliding over the imperfections almost like you're on a regular road...
Question, what made him use the locking differential in the Ranger? I didn't see anything going wrong where he needed to engage it. Vehicle just came to a stop.
You need to look at the more intense off-road videos to come on versus ranger I’ve done the research I’ve seen all the videos the Ranger is more powerful and doesn’t get bogged down off-road it’s easy to put a 3 inch lift or even a 6 inch lift on the Ranger to make the clearance what I’m saying is the power is there you can do anything to the truck and the Tacoma is behind the times with that old engine I could’ve got up that hill without locking the rear dif
The Tremor package cost $4,290, but you are forced to get the 301A package which is an additional $1,670 so this actually cost $5,960. A Ranger with just the Tremor package cost $42, 545 in the XLT. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road is $35,550 with the manual and $37,380 with the auto. Jumping up to the TRD Pro it cost $44,175 for the manual and $46,880 for the auto. So this Ranger falls in the middle of the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro pricewise. These are all MSRP numbers. Myself I would look at either the TRD Off-Road and the Ranger.
@Chano Leyva yeah ecoboosts don't blow dude. They're designed for boost. Taco engines are boring and severely lack power in high elevation. Turbos in the mountains are a wonderful thing.

@Chano Leyva cam phasers are noisy but they don't affect performance. Timing chains aren't any different than Timing belts. They need replaced and aren't even any harder to do. No they don't go through turbos that bullshit unless you don't know how to drive and engine with a turbo. You're supposed to let turbos cool at idle before shutting down the engine. My point is, if you're a car person, ecoboost is the way to go. Easy and cheap gains, gas mileage and reliability. If they sucked, they wouldn't sell. And ecoboosts designs sucked, other manufacturers would be copying them. Who's copying Hemis? No one, because ecoboost gives you power and mileage. My Raptor has a ton of power but gets 27 mpg if a drive it like a bitch. A hellcat gets 16 mpg no matter how nice you drive it. Why wouldn't I take both? Taco engines are boring, underpowered and struggle bad in altitude. Pretty simple decision.
I have a hard time understanding how anyone can enjoy driving the Tacoma, sitting on the floor like that. Absolute dealbreaker for me, and I LOVED my Colorado.
definitely don't need a trailer hitch accessory maraca... Just run the hitch pin through the receiver after you slide a recovery strap into the receiver, and this way you don't drag your maraca (IDK how to spell maraca, but that's what auto correct suggested)

Interesting as the 2019 Ranger I have has a metal bumper and most talk was the tremor would have rear tow hooks. If not the case then a let down from previous information given.
I can see that bs going on as I don't remember the XLT here having heated seats. An to get it installed....Ford says it's not possible unless a full rewire 🤦♂️, power mirrors and so on..well you will just have to go up on trim level package if you want that. Sorry these are small minor things in my head...it's not like I'm asking for adaptive cruise control 😒
In the xlt 302a package you get heated seat but the trenor is only available on a 301a package. The seat have a different cover so maybe that's why but i'm looking to install some aftermarket one instead of paying 5k for heated seat and a cluster I don't like
A friend of mine has had several Tacoma‘s over the years and he told me when I was truck shopping that the new 3.5 over the 4.0 was having problems. Does anybody else have any experience with issues or was that just a minor blemish if anything?
My 2017 has 103,000 miles on it. Never been in the shop for any work. Still runs like a top. Auto transmission works fine, just not up to today's standards. But if you change the rear gear ratio, that problem goes away. I tend to hardly ever use 6th gear. I just put it in 5th all the time. So even at near 70 mph, it is running in 5th. Gets average of 21.5 mpg.
@@stkmkt1 With the 2018 MT, 4.30 gears. I get 23mpg hi-way. Still bogs at low rpm. Done some engine mods to increase hp, it helps. If I get larger tires, will regear(what are you running). I gave up my 1st gen Taco which ran better, was a much happier machine. The 2018 has been towed to the dealer, has been in the shop multi. times.Very difficult to deal with these computerized cars. Will learn to live with it. Thanks for your input.
I live in Arizona and off road about twice a wk in 115 deg weather all the time for hours and miles on in on difficult trails in middle of no where , I have 41,000 miles on my 18 Tacoma with zero issues . Very happy with it , actually best truck I’ve owned in 26 years .
I sold my 2018 TRDOR Specifically because of the transmission and gutless engine. Horrible mileage, terrible towing mileage, and the transmission is legit garbage to live with. The seating was also horrible for long road trips and the steering wheel only being able to telescope an inch (seriously) is an absolute joke. I should have kept my 2nd gen TRDOR honestly.

Carlos, you say the Tacoma is at a disadvantage in regards to its tires, yet its tires enabled it to ascend the hill without having to lock the rear diff, unlike the Ranger. That actually demonstrates superior tires. Don't let the big lugs on the Ranger's fool ya.
Actually that likely has to do with the fact that he was carrying much more speed up the hill as he want demonstrating slow speed drive modes in the Ranger.
The Tacoma comes up short on powertrain (minivan cough) and makes it a non-starter for anyone towing a camper, side-by-side, sleds, or boat. It will do it, but will suck at it. Same with 4-Runner.
My wife's stock 4runner Limited could do all this, no problem! My stock tacoma TRD with the after market tires you have on that hair dryer 4 banger, would out work that all day long. Plus it's a farm truck with 385000 MILES.

Love my 2019 manual TRD Pro. Solves the gearing/acceleration problem but does require a tad more expertise when off roading.
I'd have to say that no truck is perfect but I can see mixing a few of the features together to be a hella lot closer.

I wanted to love the ranger because of my previous experience with them in Spain and Queensland (along with the discounts back here in the U.S.), but fucking Ford had to fuck up an old chassis with messed up suspension, a drivetrain combo I don't trust for any work outside of delivery vans and weird option lists than really aren't clear to our more less familiar customers to muddle the waters on what your are getting.
I'd rather take a Canyon/Colorado or Tacoma at similar price point than any ranger. That's without getting into the lazy job they did with interior space efficency, the utility of the truck bed, and the fact that out of all of the crew cabs, the ranger was the only one (with throwing the ridgeline for good measure) who's crew cab should have been called an "extended cab with crash support".

I owned a 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road and got rid of it and got the Ranger Lariat FX4 2020. The differences are vast. I am 6'3 and I actually fit in the Ranger. The comfort level in the Ranger compared to Tacoma is enormous. Powertrain is better in Ranger. A major SP for Tacoma was resale which is great, but Trucks overall are so popular in USA right now they are all holding their value. I will stick with Ranger for now.
I drove a ranger tremor 75k hard miles working in extreme remote areas in California while working for pg&e. The truck is a company truck but damn it never failed me. That's through mountains and rocky hills, slippery wet rainy roads, snowy mountains etc. It is extremely amazing. Has built in navigation systems etc. Everything that most people need.

Bought a 2021 Tremor, absolutely Love it. Plenty of Power, thought about the Tacoma but dated body style and tow capacity is why I opted for the Ford. Plus I’ve still got a 25 year old Ranger that’s still going!

I’ve owned two Rangers and one Tacoma. Didn’t have a single problem with any of them.
I’ve had 4 Tacoma’s and 3 Rangers. Lost an AC compressor on one Toyota and lost one 2wd Transmission with normal non towing use in a ranger.
I've Driven Both Trucks i like the Ford Ranger Much better its engineered better. Also i had an old Ford Ranger that ran over 300,000 Miles Great Trucks
Ive got one that had that many miles by 2001...lost track now, but it will start -20F after sitting 4 months, no lifter tick or anything. It's got the pushrod 4.0L v6 ohv. 2wd manual trans, no power ANYTHING but its an XLT. Go figure.
Hopefully the I-4 turbo is as reliable because I just bought a tremor 😬

Good points - I do think the TRD Off Road (4x4) is the smarter choice for about 10K less than the Pro. I purchased my (2019) TRD OR 4x4 Double Cab new in Jan of '19. I have put 93K miles on it so far - with many of those miles in 4WD. I own a horse farm and have indeed found this truck to be VERY impressive off road. However I find it just as impressive on road, obviously I drive a LOT. The ride is nice, the storage is WONDERFUL, and the fact that is has been totally dependable means a lot. As for dependability, we have another Tacoma - a 2002 TRD OFF Road 4x4 (my son's truck now). That truck is put through he wringer as well...it now has 245K miles, and has had nothing other than routine maintenance (timing belt was replaced - though it did not fail, we just did it a maintenance recommend)...Toyota has earned its reputation for reliability - at least in our house.
This vid is outdated. Ranger tremors off the lot will cost you a lot less and have far more rebates and most sell at MSRP. Tacoma is the opposite. Some are selling for damn 55k now.
Just purchased the 21 Ranger Tremor with the Lariat trim in cactus grey. Had it about a week now and it's a blast to drive. Has plenty of power, drives smooth, has a cozy yet also surprisingly roomy interior and yeah, it looks great. Have received many compliments. I have a few niggling complaints but certainly nothing major. One is I wish it had a PNRDS readout beside the shifter as well as the dash. Another is I can't believe Ford didn't include a tailgate damper with the Lariat package. I do love the spray-in bed liner. Very professionally installed with no bubbles or smears and the Ford logo on the rear bulkhead is a nice touch. I'm surprised at how quiet the cab is when going 75 on the interstate. Infotainment unit is very easy to use and has everything you could think of lol. Looking forward to taking it four wheeling over the holidays. All in all I am very pleased with this truck. Great job Ford! (Edit - I meant a lighted PNRDS. Can't see it at night)

Right. People fanboy over "reliable Tacoma" yet they got weak frames that rust to hell and back and is an off-road vehicle but yet it has plastic bumpers. Tacoma transmission also sucks. Ranger may have a 4 banger turbo but it will be cheap to replace compared to other engines even if it only last 150k miles. Plus Tacoma engine is dated.

Not paying the price of a 3/4 ton for a mid-sized truck when I can just buy a used Ranger for much, MUCH cheaper. Look up replacement engines, the Ecoboost is cheap compared to bigger engines like V6s and V8s.
The Tacoma is a great truck, no doubt. However, neither truck was actually tested anywhere near their limits in this video. The Ford very likely did not "NEED" to have the rear locker engaged to finish that hill climb. Also, the Ford doesn't just "slightly" exceed the Toyota in towing and payload capacity. The Ranger Tremor has a payload capacity of 1430 pounds versus 1155 pounds for the Tacoma TRD off road when both are outfitted as they were in this test. The Ranger also offers 7500 pounds of tow capacity, yes, even in Tremor trim, versus the Tacoma's 6400 pounds. In this class of pickup 275 pounds of payload and 1100 pounds of towing is not insignificant. At the absolute limits the Tacoma will no doubt offer just a bit more off road capability. In the real world where those limits will almost never be reached the Ranger is the better truck. The guy doing the test, as almost everyone who drives the Tacoma does, commented on the unnatural and uncomfortable seating position of the Tacoma but still states he would choose it. Dude, pull the bias plug and let that stuff drain. The Tundra is comfortable and livable. The Tacoma is so uncomfortable that it feels like a different company designed it. Whatever truck you personally choose to drive is just that, a personal choice. But when you are reviewing vehicles it's time to leave your personal opinions at the door. The Tacoma is the more capable truck 3 percent of the time and in situations 99 percent of buyers of either truck will never get themselves into. The rest of the time the Ranger is the better truck. Perhaps more unreliable but while it runs I'd take the Ranger.
Absolutely true! I've owned a '19 Ranger XLT FX4 for 4yrs thats been impeccable. I love this generation Ranger so much i just ordered a '23 Ranger XLT Tremor last Fri. Wanted to get the best edition of this Ranger before the all new '24 Ranger debuts fall '23. You cannot beat the proven high performance Gen2 TGDI powertrain in Ranger. It's very understressed actually. It's actually good for up to 400hp! Just an awesome truck. Home run Ford!
I’ve tested both, extensively. Decided on a TRD pro Tacoma with a manual transmission. While the ranger’s turbo power plant scoots, I just don’t feel good about long term reliability of the boosted ranger. FYI, if you opt for a manual trans Tacoma, you lose a handful of features. No JBL, no crawl control, no terrain management. Well worth it for me, I hate that automatic Tacoma trans.
Ranger is much more of a value. The Ranger bumpers are steel with plastic covers and the electronic-locking rear differential is limited-slip, so it'll engage even if you don't lock it. Plus, it's A LOT more capable in towing & payload.
But the Tacomas have a bit better value tho

Diff lock works in 2wd on rangers. I did it a couple days ago.

I recommend the 6 speed manual if I'm getting a Tacoma. It shifts much better with a stick overall.
Those low speed cruise control settings are great when you are driving somewhere with low speed limits (like a construction site)
Nice review! I just got a Tremor and LOVE it...it was a significantly better price. There is an available tuner (actually From Ford) that significantly boost the horsepower and torque. Both are great trucks I think the Ford made more sense for me.

It seems like every one is having a whining diff in there 19 20 and 21 tacoma's. Most of the top magazines have taken the tacoma off there best buy and replacing it with the ranger.

All Rangers, every trim line have front and rear (Steel Bumpers) just middle plastic incents. Also All Rangers, every trim line has a full size spare tire.
Been eyeing these up. In my area, comparing xlt tremor package to trd pro package is a $12,000 difference. Fuel economy is better in the Ranger. I really love the Taco, but I will probably end up with the Ranger due to economics

Plus with the ranger you getting better payload, rear disc brakes, more towing and better sitting position. Not sure what you ended up purchasing in the end. To be honest you can't go wrong with either

@@CaseySchneider there job is to help keep the tire from going into the fire wall. They are just another what if safety device. They are not soiled rods and only held in with a bolt so taking them out isn’t much of a loss
So much hate in these comments. Larlos Cago did a great job and looks great doing COVID desert chic. Tacoma v Ranger... the Ranger is the better value, but that Tacoma is so over-engineered. 3 out of the past 4 Fords that I've had have required multiple trips to the dealership for fixes, though. That said, this is a hard choice here.
for long run, Ranger going to cost more include resale value where Ranger probably won't catch Tacoma.
Let's say my new ranger being an FX4, 2019, has gone through really rough terrain with out as much issue like he showed for having to put the rear locker on. Not to say he wasn't fair, I wasn't there to see the hill in person to see how each of the tires reacted on the hill.
As for mine going to the dealership...all due to the dealership not doing a thing on fixing it till recently and that's after showing a few videos of the radio at times not displaying the information. That's just a bad radio and nothing to due with the mechanics of the truck.
My toyota stayed in the shop. I will never buy another toyota or buy from there smug dealerships.
I think I would trade-in my Ridgeline for the Ranger if it had the interior updated and a V6. I am very interested in the new 2022 Nissan Frontier.

The TRD exhaust is modest yet helpful to allow the engine to breath better. I LOVE the sound that doesn't attempt to sound like a V-8.

I think Toyota's reliability is a misconception, people who buy them expect them to last long so they take care of/ and drive them as if they are keeping the vehicle for 10+ years.
If you proform the required maintenance, any vehicle will last 200k plus miles.

Save yourself money and get the FX4 ranger or the TRD off road taco. Either truck would be great, I personally do not like the Taco. I drove one for 2 years for work, don't like how the seat sits mostly. Out of these two, I would go ranger. However, I will stick with my 4 runner.

I prefer the ranger, its better in most categories. Rangers also have historically been great trucks, very sturdy. As are Toyotas but the Ford is just a better truck

Weird statement to make that you didn't need to use the locking diff with the tacoma. You also didn't stop in the middle of the hill with the taco like you did with the ranger.

I drove both, wanted to love the TRD pro, but couldn’t stand the constant shifting and I didn’t want a 4cyl turbo, so I ended up buying a 2023 pro 4x frontier. I can honestly say though, in this day, you can’t really go too wrong. Most trucks are going to be pretty reliable. It just comes down to preference
Thanks for the great video. I revere the Toyota's performance off-road. It has excellent approach, departure, and clearance. The concern I had was with the seating arrangement in the Tacomas. Some reviews noted the smaller cabin size and overhead clearance problems with the roof for those over 6'. One guy of about 6'3" had to lean his head. That doesn't look comfortable. The Ranger has plenty of roof clearance for taller drivers - so I got that one. It's a great improvement over my 1993 Ford Ranger. That old model was much smaller with all-manual controls to roll down the window, shift, and adjust seating (very limited). There was no computerized video of the rear. There were no sensors and warnings embedded in the 1993 Ranger like today's models. So, I am overwhelmingly impressed with the modern 2022 Ford Ranger Tremor. The Toyota truck that would likely fit me better is the Tundra Pro because it can accommodate bigger drivers (e.g., former football linemen or linebackers). The problem is that it's awkward to drive bigger trucks in crowded Phoenix. So, I prefer the mid-size models for daily driving. But I took the Tremor up to rural Eastern AZ last week up the mountains. It did great on a very rugged dirt road partially flooded out with many ditches and bumps. It gets muddy with snow up there in elk and bear country of Arizona's higher mountain ranges. That road was built upon an old horseback trail of the 1800s - lol. But the Ranger handled it while listening to the theme song from "the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" on the blue-tooth-connected iPad.

You need to look at the more intense off-road videos to come on versus ranger I’ve done the research I’ve seen all the videos the Ranger is more powerful and doesn’t get bogged down off-road it’s easy to put a 3 inch lift or even a 6 inch lift on the Ranger to make the clearance what I’m saying is the power is there you can do anything to the truck and the Tacoma is behind the times with that old engine I could’ve got up that hill without locking the rear dif

The Tremor package cost $4,290, but you are forced to get the 301A package which is an additional $1,670 so this actually cost $5,960. A Ranger with just the Tremor package cost $42, 545 in the XLT. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road is $35,550 with the manual and $37,380 with the auto. Jumping up to the TRD Pro it cost $44,175 for the manual and $46,880 for the auto. So this Ranger falls in the middle of the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro pricewise. These are all MSRP numbers. Myself I would look at either the TRD Off-Road and the Ranger.

@Chano Leyva cam phasers are noisy but they don't affect performance. Timing chains aren't any different than Timing belts. They need replaced and aren't even any harder to do. No they don't go through turbos that bullshit unless you don't know how to drive and engine with a turbo. You're supposed to let turbos cool at idle before shutting down the engine. My point is, if you're a car person, ecoboost is the way to go. Easy and cheap gains, gas mileage and reliability. If they sucked, they wouldn't sell. And ecoboosts designs sucked, other manufacturers would be copying them. Who's copying Hemis? No one, because ecoboost gives you power and mileage. My Raptor has a ton of power but gets 27 mpg if a drive it like a bitch. A hellcat gets 16 mpg no matter how nice you drive it. Why wouldn't I take both? Taco engines are boring, underpowered and struggle bad in altitude. Pretty simple decision.

definitely don't need a trailer hitch accessory maraca... Just run the hitch pin through the receiver after you slide a recovery strap into the receiver, and this way you don't drag your maraca (IDK how to spell maraca, but that's what auto correct suggested)
See what the resale value of the Ford will be in 5 years vs a TRD PRO Taco. I do like the Aux control panel in the Ranger.

Rear locker, just like the FX4. And you can option it on pretty much any trim, even a base XL just without the trail control.
Tacoma for me I simply prefer n/a engines

Interesting as the 2019 Ranger I have has a metal bumper and most talk was the tremor would have rear tow hooks. If not the case then a let down from previous information given.
You lose the tow hook when you add the tow package

More than that, here in canada yon can't get heated seat with the tremor package on an xlt, you need the lariat if you want them
I can see that bs going on as I don't remember the XLT here having heated seats. An to get it installed....Ford says it's not possible unless a full rewire 🤦♂️, power mirrors and so on..well you will just have to go up on trim level package if you want that. Sorry these are small minor things in my head...it's not like I'm asking for adaptive cruise control 😒
In the xlt 302a package you get heated seat but the trenor is only available on a 301a package. The seat have a different cover so maybe that's why but i'm looking to install some aftermarket one instead of paying 5k for heated seat and a cluster I don't like
A friend of mine has had several Tacoma‘s over the years and he told me when I was truck shopping that the new 3.5 over the 4.0 was having problems. Does anybody else have any experience with issues or was that just a minor blemish if anything?
Have recalls with Taco. Recent fuel pump fix. 3.5 extremely low torque, need mods for a fix. I have a MT, the auto-T sucks big time
My 2017 has 103,000 miles on it. Never been in the shop for any work. Still runs like a top. Auto transmission works fine, just not up to today's standards. But if you change the rear gear ratio, that problem goes away. I tend to hardly ever use 6th gear. I just put it in 5th all the time. So even at near 70 mph, it is running in 5th. Gets average of 21.5 mpg.
@@stkmkt1 With the 2018 MT, 4.30 gears. I get 23mpg hi-way. Still bogs at low rpm. Done some engine mods to increase hp, it helps. If I get larger tires, will regear(what are you running). I gave up my 1st gen Taco which ran better, was a much happier machine. The 2018 has been towed to the dealer, has been in the shop multi. times.Very difficult to deal with these computerized cars. Will learn to live with it. Thanks for your input.
I live in Arizona and off road about twice a wk in 115 deg weather all the time for hours and miles on in on difficult trails in middle of no where , I have 41,000 miles on my 18 Tacoma with zero issues . Very happy with it , actually best truck I’ve owned in 26 years .
I sold my 2018 TRDOR Specifically because of the transmission and gutless engine. Horrible mileage, terrible towing mileage, and the transmission is legit garbage to live with. The seating was also horrible for long road trips and the steering wheel only being able to telescope an inch (seriously) is an absolute joke. I should have kept my 2nd gen TRDOR honestly.

Carlos, you say the Tacoma is at a disadvantage in regards to its tires, yet its tires enabled it to ascend the hill without having to lock the rear diff, unlike the Ranger. That actually demonstrates superior tires. Don't let the big lugs on the Ranger's fool ya.
Actually that likely has to do with the fact that he was carrying much more speed up the hill as he want demonstrating slow speed drive modes in the Ranger.
I don't know why Toyota has such a hard time with seating ergonomics in their trucks.

The Tacoma comes up short on powertrain (minivan cough) and makes it a non-starter for anyone towing a camper, side-by-side, sleds, or boat. It will do it, but will suck at it. Same with 4-Runner.
I just sold my 2013 Tacoma TRD SPORT 4x4 crew cab for 23,500.
The truck had 104,832 miles on the ODO. I bought a Tocoma TRD Off Road 4x4.

My wife's stock 4runner Limited could do all this, no problem! My stock tacoma TRD with the after market tires you have on that hair dryer 4 banger, would out work that all day long. Plus it's a farm truck with 385000 MILES.
