In my experience, a taller bed side means you can stack more items in the bed. Not sure why it was mentioned as a con. There’s a cool feature called a “tailgate” to aid in loading.
That's the number one reason I don't ever look at one. If the seating position was more like a truck instead of a car I would have bought one years ago and I would probably love it. I commute 70 miles to work and the more upright seating position in my truck and in most SUVs is way more comfortable.
I have a 2015 GMC Canyon, and I'm still very happy with it. To be honest, it's more truck than I needed. I could have easily gotten by with a Honda Ridgeline. When I went looking for a a new truck, I was planning on testing out the Tacoma and Frontier as well as the Canyon. But I can be impulsive at times. I went to the GMC dealership first because it's only a few miles away from my home. I never made it to Nissan or Toyota. I took the Canyon for a test drive and I bought it that day. I don't have any major problems or complaints, and I enjoy it every time I drive it. It's not perfect, but it has been good enough. Comfort-wise, I find it very good, for me anyway. I did a ten hour drive and by the time I reached my destination, I was still feeling "fresh as a daisy". I will confess, however, I did have to get a couple things fixed. I'm sure I wouldn't have had any problems with a Tacoma. But I have no regrets. The best part? It's paid for.
3:44 a great example of how absolutely insane car and truck prices have gotten. Way over priced these days, so little value for money on these base models which cost as much as fully loaded versions did 5 years ago
Ranger guy here …. Frontier is very nice and of course old faithful taco gets your vote but I’ll keep my ranger. I do like the older Colorado zr2 I think they are called
I've never heard high bed walls as being a con... There's something called a tailgate on the rear of the vehicle that helps for loading and unloading cargo! Neat right?
I expected better from edmunds. You had 4 trucks in your possession and provided us no instrumented tests. No actual examples of off-road capability. Towing, or city/hwy manners. At least line them up bracket style and do a 1/4 mile run just for fun.
The 2019 Ranger vs Tacoma vs Colorado video they did was far more useful. Real impressions of driving on and off road, user conscious review of the interiors and beds.
I looked at all of these recently before settling on the Frontier. The GM and Ford offerings either had a poor interior layout, or were flat out uncomfortable. The Tacoma’s unique folding rear seat was a big draw, but Toyota dealers near me weren’t willing to negotiate on the outrageous markups common in the market. Frontier SV4x4 was a solid truck with killer seats and everything you need in a small truck.
The Nissan has been growing out of favour in Canada and the USA as does sale ls numbers. Nissan never did anything about the engine cooling systems in their trucks and suvs when the radiator fluid would mix w the engine fluids and cause catastrophic damage. Nissan is on its way out and no new engine and tranny will change what North America feels. The old Nissan was bulletproof before they went w Renault.
@@TC-hs5wy Uhh what? They fixed the trans cooler issue in like 09 or 2010. It's no longer built into the rad but a separate unit. Second gens are also one of the highest selling models of midsized truck in existence behind the taco of course.
Only assholes drive Jack the ranger was the most American made truck that hold his value better has more power toes more better gas mileage. Comfortable
Currently in my area, a Tacoma SR5 is just as expensive as the new frontier with the SV trim package (which is the mid level). The frontier has a way better driving experience, more features, and a better powertrain. I believe the tacoma's price is so high due to its name and history.
Just buy a used Tacoma for the price range you are looking for and then resell it when its paid off. Then you can easily buy any new vehicle you want with that high value longevity.
The Frontier has a big advantage coming late to the game here. The interior is very well laid out and extremely functional. I don't know why the pricing was a pain point in this video; I think Nissan's approach with fewer trim levels and option packages makes it easier to digest than wading through what Ford and Toyota offer.
Honestly, I like the Frontier the best. Between the interior, seating position, power, exterior styling, it checks all the boxes for me. Second place would go to the Tacoma but I’ve driven one. I really didn’t like the seating position. I felt like I was sitting on the floor. You can even see what I’m talking about when her first climbs in the truck in this video.
I own a 2017 and I am 6 ft. I dont have an issue at all with it. The only thing with the Toyota is if you are under 5' 9" its higher to get into than most
@Richard Vidal tacomas are cramped. I am 6'4 and broad. I had more room in an old school ranger than a tacoma. Doesn't help either that they are boring as all fuck to drive.
@@cavalierliberty6838 You are full of crap I had a old school ranger before my Tacoma so that is ridiculous, and for all you guys buying the other Trucks I will be driving 100,000 plus miles without any problems, couldn't say that with the Ranger.
@@briansalisbury5760 god, this is why i hate toyota drivers. Look. The tacoma was NOT designed for people like me. Take your supposed longevity and blow it out the tailpipe of your truck. No one gives a shit
Traded in my 2011 Tacoma for 2021 Canyon AT4 and have been very happy with it. I checked out all the main players; Ranger, Frontier, Tacoma, Colorado/Canyon. Canyon was the most comfortable to me. Great truck!
Complaining about the Frontiers price when it's the first new Frontier in 16 years! As long as it's in the same realm as the others then is fine, I think its earned the right to raise the price considering you get more crap with them and a standard v6. Not a fan boy just using some logic.
Could we get a review of these in the entry and or mid-tier 4x4 trims? Not everyone wants to spend 50k on a TRD pro or Denali...it would be nice to see how the mid-tier trucks look and handle towing.
The trd off road is basically in the middle. You can get an off road without any of the fancy stuff for about 40k. Sr and sr5 are entry level and limited and trd pro are the higher models.
@@jesusmaciasfranco6276 California is highly inflated on everything, particularly in SF area which is probably the highest inflation rate in the nation. TRD Pros are roughly $48k on average in Texas. The equally capable TRD Off Road is $40-$43k.
I agree with most of this, but there needs to be a better focus on the actual driving experience. The Tacoma's cabin is much shorter and you basically have to drive it reclined back like a car if you are taller than 5'8". The seating position is a royal pain if you take it off-road. While the kit and reliability are tried and true for sure, I would seriously hand more credit to the Colorado/Canyon vehicles, especially the ZR2.
Colorados are known for poor reliability ratings. Chevy had been putting the wrong transmission fluid in for years and so the transmissions grit like sand.
Just bought the frontier after driving the taco and the Chevy, frankly we drove the SV and the Pro4x and opted for the Pro4x based on everything you get. Compared to the taco off road it hands down out classes it in every way. First getting in much easier in the frontier. Then power much better in the frontier, as is the drive wow how quiet and visibility is much better in the frontier. Use-ability simply goes to the frontier for the rear seat fold up or down, makes it so easy. As is the bed access slightly better than the taco. But frankly price, Pro4x was less than the taco SR5. Edmund’s needs to find someone other than a taco fan boy to do these reviews. Hard on the ford but soft on the toyo!
I'm a Toyota Tundra owner. I would certainly buy another Toyota. having said that I was hoping the Frontier would rank higher. I actually like what I see with what Nissan did.
They mostly complain about pricing with the frontier but thats just MSRP for trim. Out in the real world where dealers mark up price and such, the tacoma becomes just as expensive as the new frontier. Dealers know the tacoma is a household name and they'll put a premium on it just for that
Seriously. The Ranger segment of this review was absurd. It's a great truck, if a bit dated. But I kind of appreciate the simplicity of it and the ease of keeping it clean on the interior. Also, they claim the layout is confusing... I don't understand that at all. It could not be more simple to understand where things are and how they work.
@@kylenewberry2598 I have owned one for over 2 years. I drive in the Rocky Mountains consistently. Never once have I or my passengers ever had motion sickness. That statement is ridiculous, especially coming from a car "reviewer."
@@formber it's not just them, it's every decent auto mag I've seen similiar things. It seem to of improved but at least the initial few years it was poorly tuned. And given the track record of Ford that makes sense (see the initial RS tuning debacle)
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I test drove a 21 Ranger for 10 minutes and felt motion sickness. Not sure if I'd get used to it or not but it's partly why I didn't buy it.
I'm probably going to sound like a fanboy, but I really like my '19 Ranger (Lariat FX4). Maybe it's a lack of comparison to other mid-size trucks, but I haven't noticed any of the driving flaws he mentioned. I'm not a small guy, and I find it a nice, comfortable ride. I agree that the back seats are next to useless. Not Porsche 911 useless, but close. They're big enough for my dog to lay down on and that's good enough for me.
Have owned both Japanese brands, and gotta respect both of them. But there seems to be a Toy bias in many reviews including this one. I see a trend of high regard for the Frontier in powertrain, cab quietness and comfort, road manners, braking, etc, while many reviews criticize Tacoma for bad seating position, grabby brakes, weak torque even with V6, and a trans that hunts for gears all the time, and still has rear drums. Yet they almost always rate the taco as no. 1. Often they state reliability as a factor, but how is a Frontier not reliable? At one time they had the radiator/transmission issue, but that's all I have heard. Toyota replaced many rotten frames due to rust. Once I had a nice SR5 4we that I loved, but it had eaten a head gasket and rear diff before 100k. As a body guy, I am leery of that composite bed if it breaks under impact. All that said , nobody builds perfect stuff, and I am not sure how Toyota got on such a pedestal. And with Nissan making such a strong effort, why do people expect them to be a lot cheaoer than other brands? People will rip the frontier for its "old" frame, which has held up very well and still works fine, but few criticize the "old" tacoma. I am just saying there needs to be more objectivity in these tests, especially when I see in the comments ts that many buyers did their own testing and got different results. Edmund's seems in cahoots with Toyota. But I probably should not be looking at this stuff. My old work truck is a Hardbody with 423k miles, 105 HP, and most if the running gear stock. Freshened the engine just before 300k, but it was far from dead. Hope Nissan still builds like this. Japanese integrity is amazing.
No Gladiator??? I drove a 2016 Frontier Desert Runner for 60k miles. No issues. Bad MPG but expected. Lots of plastic but it was very cheap when I bought it new. I then went and bought a new 2021 manual Gladiator Rubicon. I got $4000 off and they gave me $800 for my leased Honda Civic Sport. I paid $44600 for it, basically the same as a Sport with an automatic transmission. Along with being a convertible truck, I love it. So does my wife. The open air experience is game-changing having never had a Jeep before.
I recently purchased the 2021 Ranger STX 4 x 4,extremely hard to find, and I could not love it more.I got the base model without all the electronics, and am getting almost 24 mpg.I will admit that I traded in my 2010 Ranger,so that is what I'm comparing it to.Highly recommended!
I highly doubt you're getting 24 mpg from a full tank of gas. There's no way you are averaging 24 unless it's a 2wd and you have like 40 psi on your tires (not smart) and only driving highway at no more that 60 mph
The reason why the Frontier’s price went up so much is because they got rid of the stripped down model with the 4 cylinder engine and manual transmission. I don’t know why that was so hard to figure out. This entire review was a joke.
Which is interesting because the only people who want frontiers are mall cops and people who are okay with cheap vehicles. Why would you get a Nissan at that price point when you can get a more reliable and rugged Tacoma, or more refined and performance oriented ranger.
@@anubis1416 I’ll take the new frontier over the ranger anyday. The frontier has always been a strong outperforming truck. The only reason it got such a bad rep was that it’s looks were outdated and the cursed CVT models that Nissan produced in its suvs and sedans. However theyre now pushing for a new change to Nissan by dropping their cheap CVT models and updating their new models (looks and specs). I’m excited as hell for Nissan’s new vehicle models and can’t wait for what they came up with on their new generation vehicles. Sadly they eliminated their manual transmissions and 4 cyl option for trucks which I think was a big mistake. So far Nissan is going up against climbing a steep mountain of competition and we’ll see if it can outperform the competition.
True the new Frontier ride is amazing , seats are very comfortable the platform remains mostly unchanged but its tried and true I'm not one to bash other trucks to each their own. But in my opinion Tacoma gets way to much hype the seats suck, not a big of a few things especially the price. The new pro4x has better payload then the previous gen and towing is bumped a bit for the pro4x models Its very comparable to the trd offroad with out sacrificing ride, seats and few other things. Just my opinion but the fan boys will be here soon
After lots of research and watching many videos comparing the mid sized trucks, I chose the Ranger. This is a replacement for my 2001 Nissan Frontier which at 202000+ miles still runs great to this day. Other than the usual maintenance items tires, brakes, battery, spark plugs etc.. the only other repairs were a water pump, radiator, and exhaust manifold. It has been a very reliable truck. I sat in a Toyota and just wasn't comfortable (I'm 5'8). I also sat in the new Nissan which was very comfortable as was the Chevy. While no truck is perfect, the Ford checked off most of the boxes for me, with MPG's being the best of all the mid sized. Im at 4000 miles with my 2022 and my best mileage so far has been 24.8 in mixed driving (hand calculated). Time will tell if it makes it to 200000 miles with minor repairs. Fingers crossed.
Bought a 2021 Colorado after working for Toyota for 2 years and I absolutely love it. Buy the taco if you off-road and don't care about city driving, buy the Colorado if you don't off road and want a more refined ride. Forget the others (Canyon and Colorado are obviously interchangeable here).
Why not just buy a Mercedes then? I bought a truck for truck things. Chevy is not good for long term reliability these days and the Colorado is absurdly priced for what you get.
Edmunds hates the Ranger and I can’t quite understand why? Yes the shocks that come with the FX4 do suck badly but other than that the power is great and it’s an awesome capable truck to take off. Btw I test drove a Colorado, a Tacoma and didn’t bother with anything from Nissan since anytime I’ve ever owned one I’ve been burned by a massive maintenance bull plus they haven’t made anything good since the late 90s. I’d still rather have my Ranger over any of those trucks anyday.
The problem with the Ranger, is it's an ancient (2011 w/ 2015 refresh) model brought to the US from overseas just to have something in the segment. Literally, all they did to it was throw a metal bumper on it, because they can here. The interior is tight, you can clearly see that the screen in it is surrounded by a GIANT bezel, because why update the vehicle to fit the new infotainment system... and everywhere you look, you have cheap looking, hard, flat black plastic. For what you're paying for one of these the Lariat specific LED headlights should be standard, even European models get LED headlights standard. They could have at least tried to upgrade the interior to compete. At this point, it's just overpriced, poorly executed crap. The Canyon and Colorado are oldish, but provide better from and function over the Ranger. Tacoma, yeah it's circa 2016, yeah its interior is a bit tight and the head-unit looks like an afterthought... but, it holds its resale value, is reliable as hell, and for anyone looking to go off-road seems to have actually thought it through. Nissan on the other hand... The old Frontier was basically 20 years old, had it a few times as a rental for work and god it was terrible. A car sized fuel tank, and sub 20 MPG. The new one looks better, and has at least been given new life.. but that build quality and their current reputation paired with them trying to make up profits with its current price... it's a hard pass. It's a shame they didn't do the Ridgeline because of it being unibody... It may start with a pretty high price tag, but the function, quality, and flexibility you get out of it make even a base AWD model a great choice for those in need of a comfortable daily driver that can handle some weekend home depot run duties.
@Whyworry Street maybe this new Gen of Frontiers, time will tell. My brother-in-law buys nothing but Frontiers and by the time he trades one in for another one the tranny is all but shot and has to limp it in to the dealership at about 100k for mileage. That’s with light use too, doesn’t tow anything and no off-road use either.
@Whyworry Street Don’t get me wrong. The Frontier is much more comfortable truck to drive in than the Tacoma, but with my bad experience of the Frontier being the leakier of the two, I trust the Tacoma to last me much longer than the Frontier before other parts break down with it too. Otherwise, both trucks are about on par on engine reliability without a doubt.
I have a soft spot in my heart for that canyon. I just like the muscular front and the trucky like look. Plus the backseat has a little more leg room. But the nissan is def a hit! The Ford I really don't care for the front, looks like a car/sedan..But I like it overall. The Toyota is just sort of dated and the interior is tight spaced. That frontier is got all of em beat!
I loved my 16 canyon when it wasn’t breaking down every couple thousand kms… I just couldn’t recommend it even to my greatest enemies. Never have I ever had a vehicle have components fail in every aspect.
The one thing the Canyon has going for it is looks. It looks the best of all the trucks. And it doesn't have a lot of the faults of the Colorado. The new Frontier is definitely giving the Tacoma a run for the money, but remember that Toyota is redesigning the Tacoma. It already did with the Tundra. As is Ford redesigning the Ranger. There are rumors that RAM is bringing a Dakota in at the end of 2023. 2022 lineup is honestly all dated with the exception of the Frontier. If you want to buy a new vehicle, wait for the 2024 lineup. Inflation rates should level out and the chip shortage should be fixed.
@@DarkFilmDirector I tried to hold out..but my 2004 corolla was wayyy outdated. Grabbed the frontier but I will def be checking for the ranger, canyon, colorado and very interested to see wat dodge will do with that dakota..
@@androiduberalles Among the gasoline engines, it is the quickest, tows the most, has the highest payload, has the best fuel economy, and is comfortable, unlike the Tacoma
I still like the Ranger. It's the weekend work truck for people that need something more than a light option like the Ridgeline or Hyundai Santa Cruz. Good gas mileage, good payload, and max towing of 7500lbs is great when you hit those weekend or vacation projects. With the Nissan jumping up in price, the Ranger is a great work truck option (unless someone is like me and they like the simple barebone style it has). If the Tacoma had higher payload and towing, or just better gas mileage, the Ranger wouldn't have a purpose. I Don't need a full size truck, so my options are numerous, and difficult. Love the Ranger, but the Tacoma is just so damn good. Frontier was an option before the jacked the price up.
I'm bouncing between the Ranger and the Colorado all the time. I've tried to buy both in the last few months. There the most capable and I've had the opportunity to test drive all 4 of these. Personally I feel like everything that the Frontier was tiring to do in the update. Ranger and the Colorado do better. The ride quality and felt worse comparing it to the others too right after one another. However the Tacoma felt like driving a truck from 2005 with a aftermarket digital display added on, with an awkward squashed interior. "Tacoma is just so damn good"? Personally just don't see it. I've been obsessed with research into midsize trucks. Deeper I go more I feel like Tacoma might actually be the worst all-around truck right now.
None of these are badtrucks....I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 (purchased new in Jan of 19)....I now have 150K miles on it, many in 4WD...the truck is terrific!!!!! Reliable, capable on and off road...a terrific value.
Have driven all but the GMC/Chevy- the new Frontier is excellent, power and ride quality is great. Back seat is cramped. Significantly better than the Taco and much better interior quality than my 2019 Ranger
As a long time Taco owner, I would agree with your assessment. Nissan has a winner in the new Frontier. However, Ford and Toyota are redesigning their mid size lineup. And RAM is bringing back the Dakota. It's gonna be an interesting market in the next couple of years.
Got a 92 Nissan truck. 250000 miles and still ran great traded in for a 2004 Titan. 308000 miles still ran great when I traded it in. Now a 2020 Frontier. Just breaking it in at 35000. All the trucks oil level were at full at every oil change. Very dependable.
wait till the market get normal and watch the prices come down and then you will see more Frontiers on the road. All you see is Ford Rangers Fx4. Everyone bought the Ranger when they were priced normal!
I have a Ford Ranger lariat. I experience none of the issues mentioned. The controls are small but plentiful, not confusing though there is a learning curve. I consider it a premium sedan on top a pick up chassis seriously topping interior fit and finish in this group. I've driven them all.
I've had my 2021 Ranger Lariat Tremor for a while now and I've had zero issues with it. It's possible you got a lemon. That happens with every manufacturer. My buddy got a Toyota TRD and has had it back to the dealer several times. He drove my ranger and wishes he had purchased it. There all good trucks but I will never purchase a vehicle from a foreign company. Yeah I know Toyota employs American workers but the corporate profits go back to Japan. Same for Honda and Nissan. Also, once GM accepted obamas bail out and immediately went down the diversity hole they were out for me as well. I'm very happy with my truck and I will continue to support Ford. We need to get American workers and companies back into the red. MAGA
You had all 4 trucks. Should have done a 0-60 test empty, then hooked them all to the exact same trailer, say around 5,000 lbs and ran the same test. Then how about a 25 mile loop empty to ck mpg, and then the same trip with the 5,000 lb trialer. Also told us what rear end each one had so we could take that into consideration. Now that would be a good comparison on top of what you did here.
Yeah this isn't even a review. "Well this is the GMC and it's kind of nice, and here's the Nissan, it's newer than the old one." Absolutely nothing worthwhile here.
I second your statement. I've had 3 Toy trucks since 1984, with another Tacoma being delivered next week. No breakdowns, no tows, no failed starts. My secret? Maintenance + Tacoma = Life long ride
@Scott Taylor that's the secret... regular maintenance and tuneups. Most drivers abuse their cars and then complain they don't last. People take care of what they cherish. Most of the time, is not a bad vehicle, it's a bad driver.
No one ever compares price. Gizmos, gadgets and info systems sure but include the price as seen so we get an idea of what we are giving up or can do without.
I disagree with the ranger. It’s not so bad. The taco has horrible seating position and the canyon has some of the worst reliability ratings in any class. Ford being ford they’re not that reliable either, but better than what Gm is doing. The frontier will be a competitor. Good power train, seats, comfort, and spec and I really like it. But the ranger isn’t as bad as u say. Just my opinion. It is the second best best mid sizer in the US rn. Just saying. Again, just my opinion
The only thing bad about my ranger is the floaty feel, but throwing on the Fox shocks took care of it. Gets great gas mileage and tows better than any other midsize truck. Also off-roads very well, only out-classed by the TRD-Pro. Feels like you did it dirt especially when it has more space, power, better price, better towing capacity and better gas mileage than the Nissan and GMC. Just felt like you skipped over everything good about the ranger.
WHY do people expect a competitive truck like Frontier to be sold at a drastically lower price than the others? They'd go out of business. The old one could be cheaper because they got such a long run on their tooling.
After owning a 2019 Colorado and getting rid of it in 2021 for a Toyota 4Runner TRD partially owing to how everyone online loves to take a crap on GM I thought I’d never look back; I just traded back into a ‘22 GMC Canyon 3.6 w/2k miles after test driving all of the midsize trucks, including the new Canyon. Never thought I’d be defending the second gens and GM but here I am, a return GM customer in 2024.
@@DoctorRickSanchez love my 2018 canyon SLT thing is fantastic I'd recommend to anyone. Will be taking a peek at some Nissan dealerships as soon as that frontier is in the wild may consider trading in for it.
I’ve never been a Ford guy and really wanted a GM/Chevy but the rear door and frame get in the way of stepping out and the reliability was not there as per many unsatisfied owners. I agree the Tacoma has been the leader but the seating position is aweful and gas mile is worst. Nissan, I’m sure once the miles are added to it we will see issues. I went with a Ranger and I love it! It may be the only Ford product I will buy but I’m glad I did. Edmunds forgot to say it has the best torque unless you pay the extra 5k for the Diesel GMC. It seems edmunds needs more unbiased reviewers, sounded like everyone else paid them off. So for the first time in my life I’m saying “Ford for me thank you very much”.
Agreed. I just purchased the 2021 Ranger tremor with Lariat trim in cactus grey and I absolutely love it. Great mid-sized truck for work and play. I looked at the others but I wasn't that impressed but once I test drove the ranger and felt how crisply it responds and how smoothly it rides I knew I had found my next truck. The power train and suspension were real selling points for me as was tow/cargo capacity. Also this is my first vehicle where I never have to remove the key from my pocket and if I get out of the vehicle whi it's running, the computer honks the horn twice and locks the doors. The adaptive cruise control works the way it should have from the beginning. 3 hrs on the road and I never needed to touch the gas or break lol. I'm sure many of those features are available in the other trucks but nice to have all the same.
Your version of Rangers is really good even with a 2.3 Petrol engine. We get them as a 2.0 Bi-turbo diesel engine here in Africa. What you have as a lariat we call it a Wildtrak. Great review video too 💯
I have a 21 Colorado Z71 and love it. Didn't need a full size truck. Hope they don't screw it up with the redesign. Heard they are going with their big 4 cylinder as the only engine choice. I guess its 310 hp and good torque should be ok.
I went to look at used Tacomas 15 months ago. 2-3yr old trucks with between 15 and 50k miles were just as expensive as a brand new SR V6. I ordered new, got the text notification when it went on assembly line and when it was done.
I'm torn between the Tacoma and the frontier. My needs are basically identical for both it simply just comes down to the fact that I don't trust the frontier yet and any unforseen issues are yet to be tested
Thing with Toyota is I don't think you can order a tacoma. I think they do allocations so they have to track down a truck that has all your boxes checked and work a deal with whichever dealership has it.
@@garettgarner That is by far one of the biggest things I'm worried about. My only 2 criteria is really just it being the Off Road and in Army Green so as far as I'm concerned any packages that come on it would just be a bonus. While I prefer the Nissan as far as quality styling goes, the Colorado ZR2 with the bison package is a frigging unmatched beast!! I checked out a Tacoma TRD pro, and I found it unlivable unless you want a spine replacement. Overall I still like your videos way above Kelly blue book or Consumer Reports videos. So we all do realize that the industry loves to hate on Ford which is always a shoe in. Bro the Ranger videos shows it out performing those trucks. And the Tacoma? Most viewers choose Toyota because they think it stands for something great. Let's not forget the Tundra has lagged behind all American tucks. All big and non agile. Stop.
Bruh, I rented the Ford Ranger the engine is peppy but I agree with most of what he said the best feature is keyless start. The back seat is terrible in the Ranger. I hate the sit on the floor action that Tacoma has too. I cannot stand Toyota power trains it is not great. The new Frontier is a very big improvement but what do you expect from a company that has not changed its vehicle since 2005. My favorite in the Colorado ZR2 but it has it flaws the fact that you are still starting it with a key and no high tech safety.
You mentioned the Tundra. Well you seem to forget that when the current geN Tundra was introduced in 2014 it was BEST IN CLASS ALL AROUND and I can assure you that it will be best in class for the 2022 model year. As a regular road traveler, I prefer the Canyon with the Duramax diesel. Not only does it get excellent fuel mileage, but also able to cruise through hills without constantly searching for gears. Plus the seat adjusts up and down to allow you to change the pressure points on your butt and legs during extended legs of your trip. It’s also great for pulling travel trailers. May I suggest the Traveling Robert channel for a demonstration.
I have a diesel Colorado and honestly I will never go back to burning gas again. I average 28-30 on the hwy at 70mph. I also pulled my 6500lb camper from South Carolina all the way to Arizona with no issue whatsoever. When I get another truck it’ll be a 3/4 ton or dual wheel diesel. But the wheels will be driven off the Colorado before that happens. Bc the versatility of that truck is just unbeatable.
Useless the diesel in the North . When truck is in the garage and you go out in the winter the truck thinks it’s warm and doesn’t activate the def heater thus it freezes solid as the def heater is not big enough….warm climate only vehicle!
@@farzana6676 Here in Maryland, the dealerships have refused to support the sale of the diesel trucks. They limit sales and inflate maintenance costs in an effort to deter diesel customers. I have gone to 3 different GM dealerships within driving distance of me and they have all had the same attitude.
Honestly I was so glad when the ranger finally came back. I missed it a lot, and I just wanna point out when you step into the Tacoma it doesnt feel like a truck, but more like a car, which is kind of unique but also kinda ☠️
Tacoma's are wildly popular because of aftermarket support, overlanding builds, offroad capability, size isn't as big as its competitors so it's easier to park and maneuver, extemely reliable, and durable. You never almost see a stock tacoma on the road. It is an enthusiast vehicle for the masses.
no ones gonna talk about the stupid seating position of tacom coz of high floor? and that retarded transmission paired with a gutless motor. Thank god i got 20’ Zr2.
The absolute best thing about the Tacoma besides the reliability is the resale value. The local Toyota dealership just recently offered me $32,000 trade-in on my 2016 TRD-OR with 60k miles. That's $5k less than what I paid for it 5 years ago.
I just sold my 2 year old Ranger with nearly 30k miles for more than I paid for it new in 2019. My new Tremor will be here any day. Resale values right now are insane on more than just Toyotas.
That’s the most biased review ever , the frontier lost points because of it base price ? ??? That makes no sense I have a lot of friends with the Tacoma that have regrets buying the Truck because it’s very uncomfortable. That review is biased .
For me I would take any of these truck except the ranger I actually dig the new frontier the most out of all of them, To me the ranger just doesn’t look that rugged. In my opinion.
Gladiator is not that much more when you compare to competitors with 4x4 , V6, 4x4 and crew cab. The others start less but when make the options equivalent it's not that far off
The current ranger is pretty solid given it's age. The next gen ranger should be fantastic based on the clay model of it we saw a few years ago, and some of the details leaking out currently.
The Frontier has the same chassis from 17 years ago. The Tacoma dates back to 2005, so 16 years. The only really new trucks are the Colorado and Canyon.
Canyon owner here......I will never purchase GM again. Went from 2014 GMC Sierra and it started giving me a lot electronic issues.....purchased 2018 GMC Canyon and had transmission problems under 30000 miles. Other pet peeves is the body lines ...hood, cab, bed lie on different angles. Purchased for my daughter but once it became unreliable for her I took it over. Even though transmission issue has been "fixed" I still feel a shudder every now again. Never buying GM again.
I’ve owned both the Tacoma and Colorado. I traded in my Tacoma for the Colorado because of the ride and the Toyota was very noisy. Yes I love the Colorado!
I have the sister truck Canyon 2021....love it. The best part, it's glitch and trouble free, super reliable....after the disastrous 15, 16 model launch, GM got their shit together...and built a great Truck. Sadly a new GMC Canyon is coming out for 2023, and surely it will be a shit show of a model, bc like all GM new redesigned models, it's a rattling bucket of problems. But if you wait they turn out to be great trucks. I tested the Tacoma, it was actually cheaper than the Canyon as least the models I saw, but The Tacoma was boring, un- inspiring. And yes the reliability is slightly better, but then again 2021 Canyon head to head with 2021 Tacoma..I put my money on the Canyon.

I always enjoy your reviews. One request - could you folks spend a few moments talking about how well vehicles fit larger folks? For example, how well does it work for tall people? I’m 6”5” and my sons are taller. When I car shop I have to drag them with me to try sitting in the backseat when I’m in the front. In this vid, it appears that the Canyon has the most room.
What would actually be helpful would be to list the payload and towing of the trucks you review, not the listed max ones. Otherwise an excellent comparison. Thanks

In my experience, a taller bed side means you can stack more items in the bed. Not sure why it was mentioned as a con. There’s a cool feature called a “tailgate” to aid in loading.
As a contractor I agree 1000%
I agree, maybe if you're shorter it might be an inconvenience but other than that gas mileage may be very slightly hindered with a higher tailgate
Yeah I have never heard someone complain that their bed sides were to tall lol I lost my trust in this review as soon as they labeled that a con.
I agree, plus you wouldn't want to risk your sides paint job trying to lift heavy stuff just to load from the sides 🤷♂️
Most people don’t fill their bed to the brim stacking small items
No one ever talks about how awful Tacoma seats are, unless you are 4'10" and like to sit flat on the floor. With your feet stuck out in front of you.
Me being 6'1 i can't fit too well. if one has a sunroof its a no go. Plus the legs extended out seating position isn't fun

I expected better from edmunds. You had 4 trucks in your possession and provided us no instrumented tests. No actual examples of off-road capability. Towing, or city/hwy manners. At least line them up bracket style and do a 1/4 mile run just for fun.
Everyone of the larger outlets is like this. These just read the press releases without opinening on the vehicle itself.

Currently in my area, a Tacoma SR5 is just as expensive as the new frontier with the SV trim package (which is the mid level). The frontier has a way better driving experience, more features, and a better powertrain. I believe the tacoma's price is so high due to its name and history.

So might as well buy a Taco so 4 years and 50k miles later, you can sell it for what you bought it for.
Taller walls is an advantage to me, would rather have more walled storage than ease of access from the side.
Honestly, I like the Frontier the best. Between the interior, seating position, power, exterior styling, it checks all the boxes for me. Second place would go to the Tacoma but I’ve driven one.
I do agree that the room inside most toyotas like the fortune or hilux are small and short.

Dealers know the tacoma is a household name and they'll put a premium on it just for that
Motion sickness from a vehicle reviewer? I'm sorry, but you just lost your card to review vehicles.
Seriously. The Ranger segment of this review was absurd. It's a great truck, if a bit dated. But I kind of appreciate the simplicity of it and the ease of keeping it clean on the interior.
So all others are irrelevant or have you driven them all to come to this conclusion?
Why not just buy a Mercedes then? I bought a truck for truck things. Chevy is not good for long term reliability these days and the Colorado is absurdly priced for what you get.
I drove all these trucks recently (no frontier at the time). Ended up with a Colorado. Wouldn't trade my ZR2 for any of these.
In that case get a Honda Ridgeline. Better fuel economy, better ride quality, better reliability, and more practical.

@@veteransforequality7347 Toyota yes but Nissan nah

Havent watched the video but I already know that the Ranger will get blasted. Edmunds hates Ford
It honestly isn't great though. The interior looks 2010 chic, ride isn't great (not as bad as they make it out to be) and only offers a 4 cyl.
@@androiduberalles It's literally one of the best in class... If not THE best
@@jstrig I beg to differ based on actually test driving them and cross shopping but to each their own.
@@androiduberalles Among the gasoline engines, it is the quickest, tows the most, has the highest payload, has the best fuel economy, and is comfortable, unlike the Tacoma
Yeah, Edmunds has a grudge when it comes to Ford. I really question how equitable their ratings are.
Anyone else notice the Nissan grab handle completely moving when they yanked on it.
mid size is the perfect size for most
I own a Canyon AT4 diesel and couldn't be happier. Great towing capacity, tons of torque, 30mpg on the highway and it looks great.
Canyon Denali diesel owner here and agree fully, great mpg & torque, tows great, comfortable and off-roads with the best of them.
I love my 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro X so far!
wait till the market get normal and watch the prices come down and then you will see more Frontiers on the road.
All you see is Ford Rangers Fx4.
Everyone bought the Ranger when they were priced normal!
That Frontier engine and transmission sold me. No regrets. It's a truck through and through.
I have a Ford Ranger lariat. I experience none of the issues mentioned. The controls are small but plentiful, not confusing though there is a learning curve. I consider it a premium sedan on top a pick up chassis seriously topping interior fit and finish in this group. I've driven them all.
@Richard Vidal you can sell it now for full MSRP. Prices are crazy right now. Get out while the market is high
@Richard Vidal You sound more like a toyota Fan boy. What issues have you had with the ranger that you claim to own?
MAGA
Yea I have a ranger xlt 2wd got it brand new for 28k with rebates
@@ms1406 good deal!!! I got what I wanted and paid for it dearly... She's pretty
Just got my 2022 tacoma limited and I love it soooo much
You had all 4 trucks.
Yup!
Yeah this isn't even a review. "Well this is the GMC and it's kind of nice, and here's the Nissan, it's newer than the old one." Absolutely nothing worthwhile here.
Ford would've prevailed against them in 0-60
Ranger would have smoked em in all those tests. That’s why they won’t do em cause that wouldn’t support their ignorant conclusion about the Ranger.
Toyota would have absolutely come in last in that comparison 😂
2-time Tacoma owner! The best and most reliable car I have ever owned!
@@elche1976 True, but every car maintained will reach the high mileage of the average Toyota. It has to be built in from the ground up.
No one ever compares price. Gizmos, gadgets and info systems sure but include the price as seen so we get an idea of what we are giving up or can do without.
All are in the high 30s to start.
He was too busy complaining about the button size 😂
Got 21 Tacoma TRD Off Road, best vehicle purchase i ever made. Amazing truck
I saw an sv at the dealership for $46k. The price is ridiculous.
Those are the dealers jacking up the price not Nissan
A pro 4x in Canada without the luxury group is 49k
WHY do people expect a competitive truck like Frontier to be sold at a drastically lower price than the others? They'd go out of business. The old one could be cheaper because they got such a long run on their tooling.
That grab handle fixing to pop off is all I need to know about the Datsun
Yeah it didn’t look secure at all
I, too, noticed the flimsy grab handles. 😂

Can’t wait for the new Frontier to arrive at my local nissan dealer 🥶
Let’s be honest they are all decent mid sized trucks and you’d probably be happy with any of them.
Not the canyon it looks out of place compared to all of them.
@@DoctorRickSanchez love my 2018 canyon SLT thing is fantastic I'd recommend to anyone. Will be taking a peek at some Nissan dealerships as soon as that frontier is in the wild may consider trading in for it.

Love the new frontier!
wow............ i just bought a 2021 toyota tacoma sr5 with the 6 foot bed and i couldn't be happier......love it! great video.......
Great review video too 💯
For me it would probably be the new Nissan Pro4X or the Colorado ZR2.
I have a 21 Colorado Z71 and love it. Didn't need a full size truck. Hope they don't screw it up with the redesign. Heard they are going with their big 4 cylinder as the only engine choice. I guess its 310 hp and good torque should be ok.
The tacoma is essentially a savings account that you can drive. Its insane. I would never buy anything else at this point.
I went to look at used Tacomas 15 months ago. 2-3yr old trucks with between 15 and 50k miles
were just as expensive as a brand new SR V6.
This video was fun and made me smile :)
Agree with you on the Tacoma seats. Drove one for a while and could never find a comfortable seating position
Got myself a Colorado WT 2019 v6 crew cab full size because it was the best choice for me overall. I manage 9.6L/100km on my everyday drivewhich is awesome for a midsize that big! I love my tryck!
FORD ALL THE WAY
So we all do realize that the industry loves to hate on Ford which is always a shoe in.
Also, there is a reason why the Tacoma is the best selling mid-sized truck that reason is reliability BYE NOW!!

Nobody here is talking about Beretta pistols?...
In other countries every single trucks is a diesel. I don't understand why diesel trucks haven't taken off in America.
@@northernmb1 No more. Modern diesels are very advanced.
@@farzana6676 Here in Maryland, the dealerships have refused to support the sale of the diesel trucks. They limit sales and inflate maintenance costs in an effort to deter diesel customers. The Canyon's a '21.
For the 1st time in 20years I am shopping for a new mid size truck. Find this video helpful. I will check each model for making purchase

The current ranger is pretty solid given it's age. The next gen ranger should be fantastic based on the clay model of it we saw a few years ago, and some of the details leaking out currently.
The rangers still pretty impressive considering it basically an 11 year old model
The Frontier has the same chassis from 17 years ago. The Tacoma dates back to 2005, so 16 years. The only really new trucks are the Colorado and Canyon.

I did the opposite way. From colorado to tacoma

You are better off just getting a full size truck. Mid size trucks are not comfy for tall folk, especially for long trips.
Cars are made for people closer to the average. If you are too big or too small, you will have problems to fit in comfortably.
Well I am 6'1", and been driving a 2006 Chevy Colorado for 10 years, and I don't have any problem with leg or headroom.
What would actually be helpful would be to list the payload and towing of the trucks you review, not the listed max ones. Otherwise an excellent comparison. Thanks
