Shame about losing the money on it guys but you dealt with the situation really well and the fact that you posted the video is just another demonstration of how real your channel is. Many people would have edited that part out in order to save face. But your honesty is what I love about the channel. Respect!
I must admit had a bit of a laugh too all jokes aside as long as your ok Rob that matters more love the channel and what you guys do SRUK are brilliant ♥️
Rob, you were in a state of shock, which is not the best time to decide to scrap the whole car. It looked like white diesel smoke from a saturated starter motor rather than a burning fire. Chris said the car smelled strongly of diesel but, If it had been an electrical fire, there would be the strong acrid smell of burning plastic. So, I respectfully suggest, you calm yourselves down for a few days, check out the exact cause of the smoke, and then make a more considered decision.
£3k in the bin is better than someone getting hurt, bloody hell Rob can shift when he needs to. Hopefully something is salvageable, and it is broken for parts that help some other grafters out. Glad you’re both ok
Thank you both for showing the reality of how things can change in an instant. Every day is a school day. Glad you are both safe and got to go home, that is the lesson. Fantastic videos guys, best on RUclips.
You are extremely ethical in your approach to vehicles and people's safety. Every vehicle you repair is done to a very high standard and you won't put a dangerous vehicle back on the road. That is why I like this channel and wish you all the best. I won't lie that wasn't enjoyable to watch but your response as usual is the correct one. Good call
The main part is that you are both ok and it's only a car at the end of the day as your life's are more important than the vehicle!! Stay safe and see you both on the next one also yes it's some money gone up in smoke but Rob and Chris mean more to us all as long as you are safe!
Handled absolutely amazingly well by you both! When Rob realised what was happening, you could hear the panic/fear in his voice. Chris straight out there cool as a cucumber, deducing what may have happened like Sherlock Holmes, straight after putting it out! lol There are ups and downs in their game, this is down there with one of the lowest! All the amazing content is appreciated, but when things go terribly wrong, it's appreciated just that little bit more! 😁👍
I'm so glad no-one was hurt. Everyone is learning every day and I know it's cost you money but your lives are much more important and it could have been so much worse! Love and respect to you all
I always thought you guys edited out the bad days, compared to my salvage rebuilding you always seem to have luck on your side. This shows how honest you guys really are, please don't change. I'm glad that you guys are OK and the fire was extinguished very quickly with no additional damage to Chris's property. My neighbour lost one of his classic motorbikes last year in the same circumstance, turned the key and up it went. Neither of us had extinguishers but we have lots now. I say far worse swear words to stuck bolts, I think the word you said can be broadcast before the watershed these days! I reckon you'll get a fair chunk of money back at Copart, there's still lots of expensive parts on there. Whatever you decide, you'll be glad to get it off site and out of your mind.
Webasto auxiliary Diesel heater, causes white smoke when it fires up for the first time in a while. Was there actually fire or just smoke? Worth checking out unless you just want to get rid of the build!
Glad to see you're both OK gents. As you've just released vlog "turning scrap into cash" perhaps you should rename this "turning cash into scrap". Those old RR's are way too complicated. 👍
Only ever had a couple of fires - fire definitely can move quicker than we can. Golden rule no1 Always have a fire extinguisher close at hand and in good condition. More by good luck than good management, I did. Saved the cars, saved the garage. You lads are just the best. Decent, honest and thoughtful.
Guys, please don't give up on it without having a proper look at it first. It might just need a starter chucking at it. I know you were probably in a bit of shock when this just happened but you've come so far with this car, it would be a shame to see it broken up. When diesel gets hot it produces a lot of smoke but that doesn't necessarily mean a lot of damage as a result.
I'm glad you showed this, warts and all, because it's a lesson to us all. You may get something back from scrap but you made the right call, scrap is the best option. There is value in a lot of the parts. Glad you both are here to tell the tale and shocked but unhurt. Thanks.
Geeze mate, change the starter and keep going. That’s too good a car to part out. Fix it up, that’s what you boys do. If it were a loom short and electrical fire then it’s scrap. You could have a fixed car there.
Glad you are ok. It goes to show all ways have inspected fire extinguishers on site at all times. And give them a check over now and again. Glad your ok and they worked and put the fire out. Could of been very bad. Stay safe. Take a breather
This is the funniest video since the one you put out with a scantily clad blond fitty washing your polo (not a euphemism) my 4 year old absolutely loved it and now has her friends using the new catchphrase, apparently at school now if something spills or breaks they all run around shouting Chris Chris CHRIS CHRIS, lol it definitely has to become meme, love it and of course we’re all glad no one was hurt 👌🏽
Chris is definitely the man to have watching your back! Straight into fire fight mode and only charged for a pair of boxers! Keep them coming lads because your friendship is worth more than a dozen Ferraris
Sometimes things happen for a reason. Better now than a family in the car. You guys don’t deserve any bad luck your so genuine, the fact that your not going to let it get on the road speaks volumes.
Speaking as a HGV driver, when you believe there is a fire under the hood make sure to turn the key off to stop the fuel and cut the electric supply to the vehicle, and try to remain calm so you can think straight. Now I know when these things happen it's panic stations all go! but you need to remain calm. Also it's not a great idea to lift the bonnet because when you lift the bonnet you are introducing an Oxygen supply to the potential fire which will make it worse, so don't open the bonnet and call the fire service. All in all, I think for your first time you handled it well, it's an unpleasant experience but it is a learning curve. Good luck with whatever comes next bud.
The fuel burning heater does this and let’s off white smoke from under the car. This happened to me when I tried to start it with a flat battery. Actually thought it was on fire. It’s probably had a lot of un burnt fuel from turning it over so much. Worth a try to unplug the heater and give it another go!
That explains why at 14:41 Chris is pointing the fire extinguisher at the n/s/f wheel arch. The smoke was drifting to the off side and up, the bonnet was open.
Best thing for it really, should have torched it from the beginning. A couple I know have spent £7,000 over the last year on a 2014 Range Rover. They're now buying a new £72,000 Volvo XC90 Hybrid (with a 6-9 months wait for it) Can't wait to see the depreciation on that!
You know, I think there are only a couple of reasons it smoked like that. If you didn't see flames, then as others have suggested, get the air line out, blast all the powder off it and have a proper look. One possible cause could be if you had to remove an engine earth strap, didnt put it back, then when you turned the key the loom took the earth current instead and burned the loom. Otherwise, have a decent look for the source of the smoke. Always harder after dumping a fire extinguisher into it I know, but I wouldn't pull stumps just yet. Helluva scare for you both, horrible moment and I was right there with you when I saw even just the thumbnail. Reach out if you'd like me to come and look with you, I'd love to meet you both and I'm not far away.
I bet if you stick a new starter on that and itll fire up no problem. I bet its not done any wiring damage. I bet most of the smoke was all from diesel being burnt in the starter.
Don't give up on it, diesel doesn't burn that well, not as volatile petrol, so it's pretty unlikely to have burst into flames, more than likely started to smoke hence why it pen and inks. Try a new starter motor and see what happens. As someone else has said, you repaired a proper fire damaged Fiesta.
The main thing is you're ok and no damage done apart from your pockets! Makesure you have them new extinguishers asap please guys. Keep up the great work
You'll have to do very well for diesel to actually ignite.. Usually just smokes when you heat it up.. Needless to say when you've had enough you've had enough so sell it to be broken
Get it on your channel George love to see itvatken apart and diagnosed ha did you see flames as i didnt, so like you say a lot of smoke not fire, so might not be to bad.
So one thing you may want to consider is to buy some fire safety sticks, it is a whole bunch better than traditional fire extinguishers. I don’t know what it is about British humour but Chris summed it up with the boxer shorts statement, I hope you will be able to look back with a smile, it was truly great content. Good luck for the future
The fear in robs voice tells me he wasn't joking, Chris had it covered. "Move your truck" "call 999" Really glad you're both OK 👍 👌 Most people would have deleted the video and hoped nobody would have noticed the car gone, so thanks for sharing it with us 👍
If its just been diesel leaking onto the starter, when you've put power through it going to start it, it's just burnt the diesel off shorting out in the starter, as Chris said. Although it would of given you a fright seeing plumes of smoke!! Bung a starter on and try it guys, pity to lose out on all the time and money you've invested up to now for the sake of a starter 👍
Glad you guys are okay! Really appreciate the honesty you have on your channel, scrapping it especially. You could sell it for more but then that car could go back on the road and catch fire with kids in it. Can’t win them all, hopefully this will give you some luck with the next project!
I sell parts for RR's, LR's and Jaguars. They are by far, the most overpriced, unreliable, heaps of shyte on the roads. Thank heavens they are soooo bad, it keeps me in work. What I will never understand, is why people keep buying them ? If you're very well off, and only buy brand new, then yes, in warranty I see why. Out of warranty though, christ, they are a ticking timebomb, bankrupcy awaits the average wage earner.
A friend runs a Mercedes specialist in town. Some homeless person broke into an ML that was parked out back and started a fire in the back seat. Try to explain that to a customer. It also caught a neighboring SL on fire.
Very sad situation with the loss of the vehicle, Rob & Chris, but everyone is OK, which is the most important. No one got hurt, you didn't lose any buildings, and you were able to get it under control right away. Perhaps, it's too soon to look on the bright side, but the loss of just the vehicle when so much more was in the direct vicinity, is a pretty good thing. I'm sorry you lost that car, but you could have lost so much more.
That Range Rover has been a Range Rover too long as you guys would say. Glad you guys are safe and it wasn't in the workshop and quick thinking from chris
One good thing that's come out of this > no one got hurt. My go to channel on RUclips, despite the fact I know nothing about fixing cars. Thanks Rob and Chris and stay safe x
apart from losing a chunk of money - you were both safe and sound which is most important - and I knew those running trainers would come in handy one day Rob - 😘
The real positive in this video? That your main concern was for Chris when he was getting too close to the Range Rover for your comfort. It takes a lot to not get caught up in trying to save your investment - not cynically, but it's what we've all done - take stupid risks when something valuable is facing destruction. Sorry the Range Rover is gubbed, but you guys have demonstrated your friendship *and* your understanding that some things are more valuable than money. I salute you both. Looking forward to the next video - let's hope there's no more flames! :)
Least you guys are honest, and show that car salvage is not always straightforward to make money, good Job you were there when it happened and you had fire extinguishers
Guys, I'm surprised you gave up so easily. At least pull the starter & have a look around at the damage if any. Maybe think about this one for a few days, calm down & have another go at it. What have you got to loose. I'm sure it will make a worthwhile video with lots of views if nothing else. Love your work guys & been there myself with problems like this but keep at it & you'll get it done.
I totally agree with you I had a fire on one of my Daimlers petrol pipe had a cut in it as was dripping down onto manifold never seen it and whoosh it went up but I managed to get it out was going to sell as was but I have her running now again and wiring rewired again just needed to walk away assess the situation
the main thing is you guys are ok. These things happen. You guys handled it very well. I've seen people completely loose their mind when a vehicle catches on fire at a shop.
Buying a Range Rover was my dream. When my poor Wife died, I sold my Bungalow. Later I went to a Dealership and looked at New Range Rovers, they were beautiful but something held me back and I eventually bought a Volvo. Best decision I ever made. That was really bad luck on your part, you worked so hard on it but no one got hurt and that is the important part. Love your vids, two genuine blokes making a living. All the best to you both.
nearly 20 yrs ago 2 navaras did this, + were recovered to my garage in the NE. the fuel filters are above the starter on those models, both had almost flat batteries + had failed to start according to owners. both written off, but far more extensive damage in engine bay than yours. nissan investigated, we believe the owners were compensated, + the vehicles were taken away, but we never got any more feedback. 43yrs in the business, 4 fires, so 1 every 10 yrs, you should be safe till 2033 by my reckoning... keep up the excellent work lads
Did you not notice engine malfunction displayed on the dashboard when you turned the ignition on, don’t think diesel in the starter was your problem as starter want turning diesel isn’t like Petrol which would ignite with a spark but not diesel get it checked out before scraping it
I've been watching you for a long time lads and you've always come out on top. This is the 1st time I've seen a fail, I suppose the law of averages says there has to be one. You are both ok, just move on and forget about it.👍
Pleased to see you are all ok, It is always refreshing to see the trials and tribulations of real life!!! it would be so easy to not show this type of thing and make everything seem happy. Get the air line out blow off all the powder and have another look when you have had time to calm down. I think remove the starter and see if Chris's thoughts were correct ( I bet they are ) then stuff in a replacement one and give it a go.
Glad you’re both ok, as my old boss used to say, sometimes chicken, sometimes feathers you have been doing so well recently and at the end of the day you’ll hopefully not have too much of a loss when you get some back from scrapping it, apart from the motor it’s a solid car and good interior so you’ll scrape some back…… thanks for the transparency guys.
I was expecting a lot more language than that lol. I would have been cursing like mad while running about. Glad no one got hurt and anything property wise got damaged apart from the cursed Range Rover which I agree is best to be got rid of and broken up for a few parts.
Hi Guys, Many many years ago I bought a second hand Citroen 220 Club. My first daughter had just been born. We went to do some shopping in a local supermarket and I stayed in the car with the baby. Well I got bored and started playing with the switches. I pushed in the cigarette lighter in to see if it worked. Yes, it did but I could not get it back out and the cab started to fill up with smoke. I just jumped out the car grabbed the carry cot slammed he doors and called the fire brigade. It was an absolute mess and I have a vivid memory of the wire ring which was all that was left of the steering wheel. Car fires can be very scary and go up so quickly. Good that you had fire extinguishers otherwise the lot would have gone up by the time the brigade go to you.
Well done for showing this you could have easily not bothered and scrapped it, shows people that even experienced mechanics can fail, this will show not to mess about with them if you don't know what your doing, although I'd have a look before scrapping it.
I became a subscriber to your video's a couple of weeks ago and just today this one popped up for me to look at. My heart goes out to you and understand the shock and dismay of loosing a vehicle to fire and the loss of it. It was one of those events that would have been impossible to detect.
This happened to me in a 13tonne jcb excavator, starter motor got stuck open I’ve never seen smoke like it and it proper stunk for days. We thought it was a goner but we changed the starter and it was actually ok
Shame about losing the money on it guys but you dealt with the situation really well and the fact that you posted the video is just another demonstration of how real your channel is. Many people would have edited that part out in order to save face. But your honesty is what I love about the channel. Respect!
Exactly! Well observed.
i'm sorry Rob but you had my autistic son howling with laughter, he's been running around shouting CHRIS, CHRIS 🤣
That’s made my day bud ❤👍
Hope you're ok pal
Mate I love the channel but the running shouting Chris had me in tears too 😂😂😂
That was close rob 😅scary situation hopefully u won’t lose too much money when you scrap it 👍
I must admit had a bit of a laugh too all jokes aside as long as your ok Rob that matters more love the channel and what you guys do SRUK are brilliant ♥️
It was the diesel cabin heater.
Remember when i first see smoke on my Vogue. It was the cabin heater like Julian said.
Hose it down fit a new starter and replace anything damaged.
Good call
That's what I like the good the bad and the ugly! Love the honesty chaps. Glad you are both unharmed! 👍
The main part is that you are both ok and it's only a car at the end of the day as your life's are more important than the vehicle!! Stay safe and see you both on the next one also yes it's some money gone up in smoke but Rob and Chris mean more to us all as long as you are safe!
The folk at Land Rover will have their heads in there hands, another great add for their wonderful products. I don't think I'll ever touch one.
Glad your both safe and well!
That car has been a pain 😫
Been a Range Rover too long!
Goodbye Range Rover.
Once again, an open up front and honest video. Sh*t happens and it needs to be dealt with.
Handled absolutely amazingly well by you both! When Rob realised what was happening, you could hear the panic/fear in his voice. Chris straight out there cool as a cucumber, deducing what may have happened like Sherlock Holmes, straight after putting it out! lol
There are ups and downs in their game, this is down there with one of the lowest!

I reckon you'll get a fair chunk of money back at Copart, there's still lots of expensive parts on there. Whatever you decide, you'll be glad to get it off site and out of your mind.
Webasto auxiliary Diesel heater, causes white smoke when it fires up for the first time in a while. Was there actually fire or just smoke? Worth checking out unless you just want to get rid of the build!
especially when coupled via a duff battery whose voltage drops right off when attempting to crank.
Rob and Chris, so pleased you are both safe and well. Scrap it and move on guys. Live to fight another day. This proves it is not an easy job you do.
Moral of the the story , don’t waste your time on range rovers
Glad to see you're both OK gents. As you've just released vlog "turning scrap into cash" perhaps you should rename this "turning cash into scrap". Those old RR's are way too complicated. 👍

Even tho these cars cost a fortune they seem to be designed to last ten years and 100k miles then they are knackered, it's criminal.
Thanks for showing this and keeping it real. Glad you are both safe.
Chris is definitely the man to have watching your back! Straight into fire fight mode and only charged for a pair of boxers! Keep them coming lads because your friendship is worth more than a dozen Ferraris
This is a down payment for a new pair of boxer shorts for Chris. (You've already got coffee...)
Thanks Steve much appreciated
Thankful that was outside and not on the ramp guys 🤞🙌👍
Sometimes things happen for a reason. Better now than a family in the car. You guys don’t deserve any bad luck your so genuine, the fact that your not going to let it get on the road speaks volumes.

2 best days of a Range Rover owners life. The day he picks it up and the day he gets rid of it!😄
This is the truest thing I’ve read for a while
Love how honest you guys are. Other channels would have not showed this!

Do they want to sell the Range Rover
@@sruk I can ask them
Yup, can't agree more. Should've stood back and watched it burn to the ground. These are just a massive PITA!
This video is why I love this channel. 100% genuine. Good job you were wearing your Reebok pumps Rob, they allowed a hastey retreat 😜.
That was very scary. Glad no one got hurt. I'm totally agree in your decision guys on the Range Rover.
You know, I think there are only a couple of reasons it smoked like that. I had a similar problem with diesel dripping on to an alternator on a digger. Changed the alternator and all was good.

Don't think the damage will be that bad, diesel doesn't ignite unless it's atomised, mostly smoke damage I reckon.
The fear in robs voice tells me he wasn't joking, Chris had it covered. "Move your truck" "call 999"
Really glad you're both OK 👍 👌
Most people would have deleted the video and hoped nobody would have noticed the car gone, so thanks for sharing it with us 👍
If its just been diesel leaking onto the starter, when you've put power through it going to start it, it's just burnt the diesel off shorting out in the starter, as Chris said. Although it would of given you a fright seeing plumes of smoke!! Bung a starter on and try it guys, pity to lose out on all the time and money you've invested up to now for the sake of a starter 👍
Hi Rob iam so sorry that happened to you.main thing is your ok and not hurt.glad chris was with you to help.take care both of you Nigel
Glad you guys are okay! Really appreciate the honesty you have on your channel, scrapping it especially. You could sell it for more but then that car could go back on the road and catch fire with kids in it.

Spot on, JLR stuff is absolute overpriced rubbish, NEVER EVER BUY 1 THEY’RE TERRIBLE 😭😭
Never click bait from you guys. As real as it gets right there!
14:04, Diesel more than likely went into the starter motor and shorted it out, hence the fire!
A friend runs a Mercedes specialist in town. Some homeless person broke into an ML that was parked out back and started a fire in the back seat. Try to explain that to a customer. It also caught a neighboring SL on fire.
New starter motor and check over everything else I reckon that would fire straight up!!!

That Range Rover has been a Range Rover too long as you guys would say. Glad you guys are safe and it wasn't in the workshop and quick thinking from chris
We should all start a crowdfund for Chris's new pants.
One good thing that's come out of this > no one got hurt.
My go to channel on RUclips, despite the fact I know nothing about fixing cars.
Thanks Rob and Chris and stay safe x
That's a hottest video I've watched today.
🔥smoking hot 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣😂
Just pleased you both walked away safe
apart from losing a chunk of money - you were both safe and sound which is most important - and I knew those running trainers would come in handy one day Rob - 😘
Stick it through Copart as fire damaged!! Might draw more money back!
That’s why I never go near by those horrible money pits lol
Buying a Range Rover was my dream. When my poor Wife died, I sold my Bungalow. Later I went to a Dealership and looked at New Range Rovers, they were beautiful but something held me back and I eventually bought a Volvo. Best decision I ever made. That was really bad luck on your part, you worked so hard on it but no one got hurt and that is the important part.
Love your vids, two genuine blokes making a living.
All the best to you both.
Na find the cause and fix it . Probably something minor. Disconnect starter motor turn the key and see if it lights up . If not put new starter
Starter drawing about 500 amps when stalled. Change the starter and try again.
Looks like one to wash your hands of. Glad you guys are ok Keep up the good work
Slight overreaction maybe, I’d still be trying to start it, just needs the starter pulling and a bit of a clean up.
Thought the same, diesel isnt that flammable
When things calm down investigate the cause, seems a shame to get that far into it.Dont be hasty guys.
nearly 20 yrs ago 2 navaras did this, + were recovered to my garage in the NE. the fuel filters are above the starter on those models, both had almost flat batteries + had failed to start according to owners. both written off, but far more extensive damage in engine bay than yours. nissan investigated, we believe the owners were compensated, + the vehicles were taken away, but we never got any more feedback.
43yrs in the business, 4 fires, so 1 every 10 yrs, you should be safe till 2033 by my reckoning... keep up the excellent work lads
Rob and Chris that has to be the best video ever when you went running off I couldn't stop laughing
Glad your okay guys. All you can do is put it down to experience and bad luck.
Did you not notice engine malfunction displayed on the dashboard when you turned the ignition on, don’t think diesel in the starter was your problem as starter want turning diesel isn’t like Petrol which would ignite with a spark but not diesel get it checked out before scraping it
Lads just glad no one was hurt . Put it behind you scrap it off . Stay safe looking forward to the next video .....
“What an absolute pile of scrap” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I felt like a king when i first bought a super sport, within months i felt like a pauper, never touching one again.
Happy yourselves are ok 👍
It's been a shock guys but surely worth an investigation.
The moral of that is to always have the jacket potatoes to hand no point wasting a fire lol
It’s absolutely sickening how they’ve made modern vehicles so bloody complicated to where it’s terrible to work on them!
I was expecting a lot more language than that lol. I would have been cursing like mad while running about. Glad no one got hurt and anything property wise got damaged apart from the cursed Range Rover which I agree is best to be got rid of and broken up for a few parts.
Defo a few F's in there for a start. Lol
Perhaps a silly question, but why not put the seats down & cover with a tarp before chucking engine bits in the car? Has to save a valet!
Rob pulls the pin and the car grenades 🤣
You’re best rid of it. Thank goodness you’re both safe.
Well done for showing this you could have easily not bothered and scrapped it, shows people that even experienced mechanics can fail, this will show not to mess about with them if you don't know what your doing, although I'd have a look before scrapping it.
I'd still want to know if the engine will start after the pump fix
I became a subscriber to your video's a couple of weeks ago and just today this one popped up for me to look at. My heart goes out to you and understand the shock and dismay of loosing a vehicle to fire and the loss of it. It was one of those events that would have been impossible to detect.
This happened to me in a 13tonne jcb excavator, starter motor got stuck open I’ve never seen smoke like it and it proper stunk for days. We thought it was a goner but we changed the starter and it was actually ok
