you need to stop doing your car repair's in that hoody or take the strings off look at video at the 21.20 mark them strings could of got wrapped in a fan belt or anything and you could end up dead mark. take the strings out mark ive seen to meany accidents that way
Dean, here's two easy checks to see if it has destroyed a big end without taking it apart - 1) remove all spark plugs - put a long tipped screwdriver onto the piston crown wind engine by hand so piston passes TDC and is just descending - now lean on the screwdriver - if the big end is shot you will get a thunk and feel the piston drop at same time. 2) inset bore scope - if the big end has gone it's likely the piston would have hit the head and the carbon line on the front and rear of the crown will bare witness with a visible line that mirrors the squish margins of the head
Dean. Drop the oil and get the filter off and cut it open to check for sparkles. To me, that's a bearing at one end or the other of a rod. I think the sporadic spraying of the oil from the lifters is a symptom of a bigger failure, not the failure itself. And as others have rightly pointed out, tuck your bloody drawstrings away!
Sounds like bottom end to me. Take the oil filter out and check for debris. Also drain and collect the oil so you can have a look if there's any bits in there
Yes, I know the noise. Two cracked hydraulic tappets looked normal on ours, but when pulled they flew apart so no oil arrived and ran dry which caused this noise! But as some have already said, the pump is mechanical, unfortunately I don't know if that's the case then it ticks like that even if it's broken!
To be 100% sure it’s not the chain, there are specs for the length and VCDS can measure the angles of the cams, can always check those specs to completely negate the chain as a possibility
Listen to the speed of the knock relative to RPM - That gives you best clue ;) As the noise gets worse as the oil thins it's pretty safe to say It's run a Big End Bearing - A gentle drive down the road and the noise will vary on and off gentle load with the most noise when " floating" between on/off light load as the bearing clearences are closed due to cylinder Pressure/Vacuum on the Rods. The Owner cooked the oil but good Main Stealer still sold him a service 🤣 Would say he killed it what that Oil pressure fault was logged😉
Sounds like piston slap to me. I’d be removing the oil filter first and checking for metal shavings and then whipping the sump off and checking the big ends before throwing £300 into hydraulics. My money is on bottom end. Bottom end knock can be very deceiving. Good luck mate. I’m sure you’ll get to the BOTTOM of it. 🤪😂 love the videos btw 👍🏻
I know someone who had the exact same issue after a service. Turned out when the garage removed the old oil filter the o ring stayed in there there then distorted when new one was fitted causing oil starvation. Good luck
Actually sounds like it does have a little chain rattle on start for a few seconds. You can hear it on your initial start and when you started it again in the shop once it was put back together. I don't think it is your main issue however, it sounds like rod knock or a bearing issue. I'd drain the fluid, check for sparkles and then check the oil filter for shavings before spending any more on the lifters.
I love those episode where there is a problem to be solved like this Audi, it gut be anything and to make a journey to find out what the real problem is. When you are buying a car like this one as a sort of blind date, it makes it even more interesting what is cousin the problem. So cant wait to see what you find out !! Nice video as always !!!
Read a few comments of those saying rod knock/little end. Sounds too slow for that. I took a snipet and slowed it down, counted about 7 or 8 ish taps per second of footage. 420-480 or so taps a minute thats half engine speed at idle, so definately a top end noise. Id hazard a punt at a cracked or siezed tappet
Before you do the tappets check their fuel pump it's mechanical you can get that tappet noise from a fuel pump, I remember the Old polo used to make an awful noise like that it could be a lifter on the fuel pump or something's not right with it. And I would check the oil filter so if it is the correct type and the return valve is working right and make sure you've got the correct oil where you're pointing out the loudest part of the noise is where the fuel pump is so my guess is the fuel pump or the cam to it
If no sparkles because new oil & filter done defo replace Cam roller bearings & tappers with fuel pump shim, plus if that’s run dry … then complete an oil flush through so galleys are cleared .. new oil & filter then run a manual oil pressure check at idle then 4to 5k to see pressure values .
Please check high pressure fuel pump and cam follower, it also may be leaking fuel into the engine explaining that the oil level is slightly increaed. Very common problem with these engine types.
Before you sink £300 into new tappets, you could move the ones you suspect are at fault to a different cylinder and see if the noise moves. Cheaper, but more labour it turns out you’re right as you’d have to strip and rebuild twice. I agree with others though, sounds too heavy a knock for tappets (via an iphone speaker atleast!)
give it a service change the filter they are made of paper and when a car sits for awhile they become very hard and cant get oil to the top of the engine. a 2.5 is a strong ass motor. it doesn't just blow for no good reason! check pick up pipe as someone has said before.
Check the rod bearing! I was once chasing also a tappet problem, the sound came from the valve mechanism, but ended beeing a rod bearing issue. This was a 1,9 TDI, but the sound is the same.
Maybe try unplugging 1 coil pack at a time and run it, plug back in if no change and move to the next, see if it changes tone or clears, with no detonation may rule out piston slap / bottom end, feel like I've seen this before, same noise, ended up being shells gone, also partially blocked the strainer.
The fact that the oil only squirted from a few of the lifters would say to me that there's either buggered lifters or an overall lack of oil pressure. Now multiple lifters may have failed due to low pressure but as there was a recorded low oil pressure code I'm thinking the pressure releif valve is being problematic. Thick oil on start up makes things quieter and then gets noisy as oil becomes thinner hence reducing pressure. Anyhoo, that's my thoughts.
Sounds like the timing chain. The noise at the first start up sounded like the chain rattling until the oil pressure buildup. Also I would check the oil pressure.
Check Audi haven’t left the old seal from the previous oil filter on this is a common issue when fitting a new oil filter it’s double seals this happened on my Q3 and everyone thought it was timing chain tapper issues but just was the double seal starving the engine of oil
As others have said - drop the oil and cut open the filter checking for metallic particles. Sounds suspiciously like a big end bearing to me, that'll get louder as the engine warms up. Hope it's an easy fix, but like you said, why would someone take a huge hit on a car unless they knew there was something seriously wrong?
I'd be checking the injectors in that area. Get rid of the hoodie g strings, i thought of it too when i seen you lean in. You're working on cars now, so get yourself five sets of full-length overalls, and on Sundays wear yellow budge smugglers over the top.
Just a thought, the hydraulic lifters (tappets), will make that noise if the oil is to thick (to high viscosity), could be a good idea to drain the oil and make sure it's the right viscosity 🤔🙂
Lifters nakered possibly been over reved and lifters have popped out. But who knows could also be top head was starved of oil which caused some damage. But I'm gonna go with the lifters popped off
Sounds like either a worn gudgeon pin or could possibly be a bent con rod, maybe it’s sucked up some water? Try disconnecting individual coils with the engine running and see if the noise goes away or gets quieter as if it was the hydraulic followers it would make no difference to the noise with the coil pack disconnected 👍🏻
Overfilled by 'at least' 200ml gotta pull the excess out before spending a penny, chased a similar fault around the houses on a motorcycle was convinced in the end it was the cam chain turned out it was overfilled by the owner on the last service, and its free to do 👍
I had a stuck lifter issue and the sound was very similar. It was clearing when the engine gets up to temp. I used Marvel Mistery Oil and that seems to have fixed it (I've done about 15k miles after the last "cleaning" procedure). It's odd that it's getting worse with the oil getting thinner in your case..
These engines are well known for having timing chain noise issues relating to the VVT pulleys, my TTRS has made some similar noises in the past to then not make them again at random intervals on warm starts. Pretty sure the The Turbo Unit made an article on their facebook page pointing out why these cam/VVT sprockets fail. So potentially maybe one of yours isnt getting oil pressure at all creating a rattle. I think there is also a piece of gauze somewhere in the oil channel feed to these VVT pulleys that can also get blocked up with debris stopping it from building oil pressure Ill bet audi over filled the engine with oil to see if it helped quiet down the noise im curious to see what you find. Good luck! 😁
It will cost ‘nothing’ to fit the new oil bracket (that you have for the other engine), as if it makes no difference you can then use the removed one on the Skoda engine. If it fixes it you’d have to pay the £500 anyway. Good luck 👍
My old Alfa sounded the exact same, that ended up piston slap. Changed the shells and worked out perfectly. I used a dial gauge and there was 50 microns play, just a thought to test the travel ?
Hi Dean, Sounds like its top end .. I'd take the sump down and check that the Teck (LMFAO ) at Audi aint dropped the paper foil thats on the oil bottle down the filler neck .. this in turn would be partially blocking the oil pump strainer.. when looking at the tappets with engine running looked very dry on No 2,3, and 4 cylinder's on the camshafts. the HP fuel pump is also oil fed to the cam... Just seams very strange to have a problem, After a service from Main Dealer.. I'd put money on a partially blocked Oil pump strainer.. Andy ..
Wow a lot of replies here dean. So, I doubt you'll see this. First off as others have said I'd drop oil and look at oil and filter first!!! As you've got the oil filter housing adaptor, you could try that. I doubt it will solve it. But It wouldn't cost you a penny and not the same scale as the tappets. The valves in the assembly if anything like the ea888gen3 bracket are 1. oil cool jet control valve and 2. oil pressure regulation valve for hi / lo pressure. I think the workshop manual was referring to the spring loaded antidrain valve inside the oil filter cap? Anyways, good luck. I haven't worked on the 5cyl RS3 engine btw. Thanks for the vids.
Sounds more like a completely snapped arm to me. It's very loud for the roller and I believe there would be glitter from the cam lobe in the oil as it scores the peak of the lobe off..
I'm really enjoying your videos! You mentioned the oil level was overfilled by 200 mil. That could happen if the dealership overfilled it, an injector was leaking, or the car was driven into water deep enough to get sucked in the intake and hydrolocked the engine. The injectors don't seem to be leaking now, though one could have been replaced. Seeing the owner just wanted to dump it, I'd suspect the latter.
Hi. I sold my previous car to copart for salvage. The gear box needed to be replaced. Which was not really worth doing due to the age. It did start run and move forward but because of the gear box synchro problem it wasn't a true runner. Could be somthing simmilar with your car.

Great explanation of how a hydraulic tappet works Dean. You failed to mention that Audi roller bearings fail and the needles fall into your engine with disasterous consequences!
given that the problems only happened after it was serviced . would it be a good idea to check the oil / filter out , as it might be the wrong oil / filter . Or just try an oil change with the correct oil / filter and see what happens
this for sure has low oil pressure and the first nock you did hear i would say was a bottom end nock with it being sat and oil has run back this is my best guess
High pressure fuel pump? works much the same as rockers eg shouldn’t have any clearance on cam, so if you have a weak pump pushrod pressure it would sound the same as tappet failure.
I won’t pretend to be able to begin to diagnose this from my bed but I’m enjoying watching you do it though and hopefully get it sorted out properly next video!
wouldn't it be worth pulling the oil filter and check to see if you have any metal particles in first that would give you a good indication what is going on with it if it is major it might show sigh's of glitter in the oil too
Don’t worry about cock ups we all make them. My recent favourite, a friend of a friend (honestly) started his car and ran it with the wheels off the ground to diagnose something. The car detected speed and auto locked the doors…… he only had one key 🤣🤣🤣🤣
When a sparkplug coil on my Toyota gives way a metal rattle sound is heard from the engine when started, many people I know got a new replacement engine installed when they could have just changed a spark plug coil 🤞✌️
Definitely tappets dean same noise you get from the 4g63 engine. See if they do revised parts as Mitsubishi changed from a 1 mm hole to a 3 mm. maybe remove them get them cleaned could be blocked.
After watching the full video, you can hear why the previous owner dropped it like a hot potato lol, can only imagine how it sounded at speed. He obviously thought the engine was toasted. Looking forward to seeing what it takes to fix.👍
Is it possible If they put to much oil in at the service and it’s started after the service . Maybe Oil level could be so high it catching the crank and been bubbled up so the oil pump can’t move it . Be Worth draining oil to correct level To rule it out .
Saw an a5 the other day on copart (cat title) but in the additional info for the first time I saw 'seller stated nothing wrong with the car, all perfect' I was shocked normally private entries have less info than normal copart cars
dean i hate to say it mate but to me it sounds like the motor may have been hydrolocked that sounds like piston slap hope i'm wrong also put an oil pressure gauge on it and phisically check oil pressure the 5 cylinder is also prone to get excess carbon on the pistons which can cause pre detonation and sounds like major knocking but if it was me before using the parts cannon talk to your mate at RE PERFORMANCE and pick rickys brain he be the guru on theses engines good luck cheers from down under
Everyone with the same noise waiting with baited breath for the resolution,I would change that housing and oil and go from there. Keep up the great content 👌

I reckon one of the small end bearings is seized to the Conrod or worn into the piston.
Pull the sump and check the oil strainer as typical VAG issue
Also test the oil pressure valve another common issue
Be careful when leaning over engine with hoodie on I’ve been there done that won’t do it again

First order of business is drain the oil and cut open filters. Check for shinies before running the engine at all!
It's just had an oil service, evidence will be gone ..🤔
Roller rocker .Needle bearing failure.
Sounds more like a completely snapped arm to me. It's very loud for the roller and I believe there would be glitter from the cam lobe in the oil as it scores the peak of the lobe off..

You Need to do an oil pressure test ! could be a oil pump on the way out

Get your garden leaf blower and blow air through the intake system which will evaporate the petrol.
Sounds like piston slap, stick a endoscope down the spark plug hole and check the cylinder walls for damage.

Don't go firing the parts cannon at it! Take the sump off and look at the oil and the end bearing on the side of the engine where it is most noisy.
Check your oil pressure first. If you not getting enough oil pressure the lifts collapse and you will get the issue your getting.
Personally I’d drop the oil filter and check it for particles before running it. Compression test it….
Sounds like my old Mk3 Cortina used to, when the camshaft wanted changing
Big end worn bearing lets the piston travel more and touches the cylinder head hens the top end noise. Drop da sump I say🤔
Failed lifters is my guess as well. They can still feel good on a static test but don't hold pressure when running. Hot thin oil is the clue maybe
Yeah and fresh oil isn’t as thick as the old oil so it’s being pushed out the tappet easier.
I had the same problem in my 20VT engine
Was the main bearings in crank 21:15
Great explanation of how a hydraulic tappet works Dean. You failed to mention that Audi roller bearings fail and the needles fall into your engine with disasterous consequences!
Check on the oil pick up pipe they can block up you get low oil pressure
Definitely a bottom end rumble on the first start up
Had similar on a Vauxhall and very typical sound; swapped the lifters and not one iota of difference.
Love watching ur videos on VAG and finding ut problems. This one is interesting with the noises. Look forward to the next ones.
given that the problems only happened after it was serviced . would it be a good idea to check the oil / filter out , as it might be the wrong oil / filter . Or just try an oil change with the correct oil / filter and see what happens
I’d probably check the bottom end bearings may as well rule that out first
this for sure has low oil pressure and the first nock you did hear i would say was a bottom end nock with it being sat and oil has run back this is my best guess
Dean the wizard to chase the issue down. Well done m8
High pressure fuel pump? works much the same as rockers eg shouldn’t have any clearance on cam, so if you have a weak pump pushrod pressure it would sound the same as tappet failure.
Dean, I think you also need to check the rocker’s . The needle bearings may have collapsed on some off them , just a thought.
Possible fuel pump failure, they make a horrible noise when they fail and do like to fail aswell, would definitely be checking that first 👍
I won’t pretend to be able to begin to diagnose this from my bed but I’m enjoying watching you do it though and hopefully get it sorted out properly next video!
wouldn't it be worth pulling the oil filter and check to see if you have any metal particles in first that would give you a good indication what is going on with it if it is major it might show sigh's of glitter in the oil too
That noise was worse after the first start up might be nice cheap fix if it is what you think it is 👍🏽👍🏽
Don’t worry about cock ups we all make them.
Would be worth getting a gauge on there to check the oil pressure.
After watching the full video, you can hear why the previous owner dropped it like a hot potato lol, can only imagine how it sounded at speed. He obviously thought the engine was toasted. Looking forward to seeing what it takes to fix.👍
Is it possible
If they put to much oil in at the service and it’s started after the service . Maybe Oil level could be so high it catching the crank and been bubbled up so the oil pump can’t move it . Be Worth draining oil to correct level
To rule it out .
Safe to say that’s likely a big end bearing, do what others have said get the oil filter off check for metal, sump off check the caps 🧢
hmm I would check the rod/crank bearings before doing anything else to the engine and spending money on it
That's piston slap dude. Bottom end in my opinion. Compression test first thing.
Saw an a5 the other day on copart (cat title) but in the additional info for the first time I saw 'seller stated nothing wrong with the car, all perfect' I was shocked normally private entries have less info than normal copart cars
Ricky at re performance is the man to speak to
Love your VAG videos so much. Can’t wait for the RS6 update vid Dean.
dean i hate to say it mate but to me it sounds like the motor may have been hydrolocked that sounds like piston slap hope i'm wrong also put an oil pressure gauge on it and phisically check oil pressure the 5 cylinder is also prone to get excess carbon on the pistons which can cause pre detonation and sounds like major knocking but if it was me before using the parts cannon talk to your mate at RE PERFORMANCE and pick rickys brain he be the guru on theses engines good luck cheers from down under
Great content and diagnostic - apart from when you were leaning over a running engine with your hoody strings dangling.. 🙈
Enlighten us on what is going to grab them on this engine.
@@einfelder8262 Possibly nothing but I’ll ask your mum to enlighten me
Everyone with the same noise waiting with baited breath for the resolution,I would change that housing and oil and go from there.
Keep up the great content 👌
Damn I love the in-depth, show everything aspect of your channel Dean. Great to see you on Chris’s channel too. Both awesome to watch.
