No expert, but I watch a lot of RUclips car electrical diagnostic videos. Mostly American and one Dutch. These guys know what they are about and in this situation they would do exactly what toolmanchris suggests. Once they find out the code setting criteria they persue the root cause of the problem. Mind you they seem to have very good access to manufacturers wiring diagrams etc. Anyway good luck.

You need over 5000psi of fuel pressure for it to start. As you're struggling to get 1000psi I'd definitely say pump or lift pump. Check for swarf in the tank in a clean container and magnet. Replacing the pump will require all fuel lines cleaning then there's no guarantee swarf hasn't found their way to the injectors. Good luck it's been a good project to watch so far!

Rob my d3 tdv6 had a can bus problem that stopped the car starting, after loads of analysis with my oscilloscope on the medium and high speed bus I tracked it down to the gateway device in the instrument cluster. They have solder joint problems. What gave it away was the LCD information display not showing outside temperature. It actually makes the car think it has crashed so shuts down the fuel system and give loads of communication indications etc for the other ecus. The cluster repair was £150 on a two day turn around.

Don't think you've tried this but given the age and mileage of car, does look like the crank sensor. They often don't throw a code, just the ECU doesn't think the engine is turning so doesn't pump fuel (and/or fire on a petrol vehicle). The rpm measurement you are getting could be coming from the crankshaft measurement. Usually a very cheap part and I'd definitely now do that first on any vehicle that doesn't run and doesn't really throw a code saying why.
Hope this helps and see you've now reached the 250k!!!
    Cheers.

Hi from Durham guys 👋👍 I hope you guys get it nailed and I know its a long shot but try the fuel rail pressure sensors if there's 2 cos sometimes if they get interrupted signals won't allow to release pressure as all sensors work in connection with each other and if one not sending signal will immobilise the entirety of injector run lol hope to see it done and hope it's not pump but you guys can handle it total confidence in your diagnosis and work 👌 thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍 👋

I've got an older (petrol) car that I don't use very often. I think that sometimes the injectors get a bit 'sticky' due to lack of use. Someone showed me that giving the injectors a gentle tap with the plastic handle of a screwdriver can free up any that are stuck. Doing this has appeared to help with getting the car started a few times. So far I've not broken any of the injectors (I know, famous last words).

Hi Rob and Chris , regarding the RR fuel problem ,I had exactly the same problem with a RR TD6 3.0ltr BMW engine . On the rear of the high pressure pump is a fuel shut off solenoid this controls the high pressure fuel to the injectors , when this fails you get the symptons that you are experiencing. After i renewed the one on my RR ir started first time . I am a 69 year old retired mechanic that still likes to keep my hand in , health permitting . Good luck lads .

Oh and allot of them faults will clear once its running, just coming up during first time check after fault clear / battery removed. The circuit open one is the one that stood out to me. Possibly bad earth/broken/damaged connection inside pump? Possibly pulled or bent when belts were changed and went brittle or had water get in someplace corroding. Good luck with that one chaps tough one to diagnose that.

  • @piercey80

Faults seem to suggest that even though it's commanding fuel to the rail, there's no pressure there, so it's assuming there is an issue with the fuel rail pressure sensor.
My experience is that the pumps break up internally, generally as a result of petrol being run through them. Chances are, fuel is being directly returned to the filter head due to brass contamination in the pump.

I don’t think the noid light test will work on that fuel system. The ECU can probably detect the resistance of that circuit and is thinking it’s open circuit and shutting down the driver. I’m sure your fault code is talking about the rail pressure sensor at the front end of the passenger side engine bank. It will have more than 2 pins. 7000psi I don’t think is enough to start it.
    Best of Luck

Hi guys, congratulations for the great effort, retired mechanic looking in from Australia, had a similar problem of wind no start with our neighbours one month old toyota corolla, took over my trust can of Export degreaser gave it a short spray in the aircleaner induction housing and away it went , the owners had the car for two years and never missed a beat. When i worked in the mining industry we had a large Atlas Copco compresser with a v671 diesel that didn't have a primer pump for the fuel system so we used a rag soaked in petrol and stuffed in the aircleaned to get it going, i would try one of these to atleast get a run out of the engine to hear what it sounds like. When you're testing with the multimeter you had it set on the lowest resistance, only 200 ohms - it will show as open circuit if the resistance is above that, set it to the highest setting and come down to find the value... Part might be OC anyway, but if its a valve/solenoid or something the value could be much higher than 200ohms...

The fact that the injectors aren’t being fired makes me think it is an electrical fault. Could the faults on the parking brake and transmission modules be stopping the ECU firing the injectors? I assume it needs to see the transmission is in park and the handbrake on before it will allow the engine to fire. Is there good fuel flow from the in tank low pressure pump to the high pressure pump?

Hi Rob , i had the same problem with a ford focus diesel , the exact as you are having . I too changed the intank fuel pump
but after a long time trying to find the problem i fixed it !!! it was the fuel pump , the new one was not pumping the fuel to
the injectors . i replaced the fuel pump again for a better one and it worked . I hope its as simple as that for you . Good luck .

Flip it as fast as you can. Unfortunately, Range Rovers aren't known for their reliability. It's quite the opposite, actually, as used models are known for “typical British engineering,” which means leaks, breakdowns, and various other mechanical issues and unusual malfunctions.

Hi Rob. This exact scenario was common on 2003ish Sprinters. Start easy on Ether but wouldn't start without. Turned out the Ultra Low Sulphur diesel was destroying the O ring on the fuel rail. Stoppi9ng sensor reading properly. Replaced 2 O rings never had the issue again.

Congratulations Guys well done on the 250k! Loving the content and videos, never miss one.
With the Range Rover I'd go down the route of replacing the fuel pressure sensor. Not very expensive and can cause it to not fire up. I've had a similar scenario where it would cut out randomly and at times take forever to build enough pressure to fire up until it eventually gave up. Try replacing it and see if that helps
Keeping an eye out on the next video lads well done

Good luck!!

No experience of this V6 but lots from the early common rail BMW 4 cylinder. Had lots of non starters like this with real difficulty tracing the fault. Nearly always ended up being the fuel rail pressure sensor or the connector/harness to it or the high pressure fuel pump. Lost no end of pumps due to contamination from debris/foreign objects, water is also a killer for the pump. Good luck with the diagnosis.

Rob, LP from the tank pump is 0.3-0.5 bar. During starting you need 150bar 2205psi. Average pressure when running is 1600bar 23520psi at the rails. It can peak at 1650bar.
Check inlet pressure at the schrader valve above the HPP. Low pressure faults cause high pressure faults. If ok, check HPP belt. Pressure control valve is open with no ignition feed, so ign off equals zero pressure. If 2205psi is not achieved, injectors will not be pulsed. The 1700psi you are seeing us a default substitute implausible value, applied by the ecu. If pressure does not rise during cranking and fuel rail pressure switch has its connections and LP is 0.5bar, then the HPP is done.
Hope this helps. Ps injectors ate piezo and fire at 120v, best you dont put your nose lights in them!

  • @poolestools8420

The fuel injectiors on these 'lion' V6 diesels are piezo type injectors which use high voltage (120 v) to vibrate a crystal rather than solenoid type injectors which use a ground switched 12 v supply. They make up to 10 small injections per injection cycle. I'm, therefore, not sure if you noid light will work with them. (I may be wrong!) In order for the injectors to start injecting you need a fuel rail pressure of over 150 barg (2175 psi) so if you are getting 7000 psi on cranking the fuel injectors should start injecting. The fuel injection system is based on the Bosch system with both a pressure (DRV) and volume control device.
The pressure control valve is built into the fuel pump itself and the pressure is controlled via PWM signal from the ECM. When the DRV solenoid is de-energized, an internal spring holds a valve closed. At fuel pressure of 100 bar (1450 psi) or higher, the force of the spring is overcome, opening the valve and allowing fuel pressure to decay into the fuel return pipe. When the pressure in the fuel rail decays to approximately 100 bar (1450 psi) or less, the spring force overcomes the fuel pressure and closes the valve. When the ECM energises the solenoid, the valve is closed allowing the fuel pressure to build. The pressure can go upto around 1600 bar.
I guess the next test for you is to check the duty cycle of the DRV to see how it matches the requested duty cycle and how the duty cycle of the VCV matches the duty cycle you saw on your Autel. It's a bit difficult without a scope though. If the pressure is building to the point at which the injectors open and is then dropping then it could just be the pump that is toast and not providing enough volume but it's strange it is giving you the pressure. Other issues may be the injector drivers within the ECM are failing or the voltage to the ECM dropping below 9v when cranking which restricts the operation of the fuel injectors.

18:30, 3 of the 4 faults were fuel rail pressure sensor related, suggests a problem with the sensor or wiring to it, worth doing a resistance check of the sensor once disconnected to see if it is open circuit or shorting out.

My friend had a disco 4, 2015. it had an electronic boost problem in the turbo and wouldn't even turn over. He had to get it delivered to a LR/JGR garage where they literally took the body off the chassis to replace one single plug. The guys at the dealership even told him to get rid of it. It cost him £4400 just for one single plug that cost £7!

Hi Chris and Rob, great content as always. My friend had a freelander with a similar situation. It turned out that the line from the fuel pump had been fitted back on the wing way round, so fuel was not getting to the inlets. I know very unlikely to be your issue, but I thought I'd mention it.
