Thank you buddy, I'm really excited to get it actually on the road. From my little experience of riding it round the carpark here I just know it's going to be a barrel load of fun! Have you thought about getting a trike?
Sadly, no. The DVLA took my bike licence when I turned 70. I probably filled out the form incorrectly, but they’ve refused to reinstate it. I took time out from my Hotel to watch the Trike festival every year. It’s amazing what these guys do to their trikes and the good they do for tourism and charities. Happy riding my friend.

First thing before anything else. Do a compression test and a rudimentary test to see if all the gears are in there. If it passes that test strip it to the frame. Shouldn't take long to pull it apart.

Try a little wet sanding with a 1500 grit and see what's under there. I bought a 94 Suzuki with a crappy attempt at flat black and I was just going to sand down the runs to get it smooth and found a really trick camelion pant underneath. It's really thin so I had to go slow but it's looking better without a full paint job. You never know what you might find.
Hey Ash, nice choice. Personally I would return it to the original blue and white. All the fairings will be off and instead of re-spraying, have you thought of wrapping, which I believe is half the cost of paint? Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next GPZ video 👍
Hi Ash. Just been watching on RUclips ‘Superbike Surgery’ today. Great knowledgeable chap. His video was to fix a bike that was with a dealer for 8months. He’s great at everything, his carb cleaning is 5*s. The reason for my message is on your new project bike, your tachometer is stuck at 6k. Superbike Surgery advised ‘it’s showing the 6k on the tach because the tank is disconnected!’ Best regards Hog
This bike is way before they used the tach to report errors and faults, that bike was a Thunderace, 10 years after this model. If the tach is stuck at 6k its because....the tach is stuck at 6k.😆
Looks like a great project! Just a heads up though, that lope it does while cranking is not a good sign. It is definitely missing compression on at least 1 cylinder. Hopefully it's just some crud holding a valve open and it blows out as soon as you start it. Hope diagnosing the spark issue goes smoothly!
I bought my dream bike in 2014. 1989 Yamaha FZR1000. It only had 4,002 miles on it. It was last registered in 1991. Still had original tires on it. 10 years and 24,000 miles later its ready for a major service. These bikes are still dam fast. Good luck getting it going.
That will be an EXUP then? I bought one of those in '89. The only new bike I ever bought. It was fabulous. Superbly comfortable for long distance rides - unlike the non-EXUP FZR like in the vid.
@@AshRowland Maybe. That won't cure the reach to the bars though - which you might not notice riding locally. But as I said, I went to the south of France on mine, and it was torture. I live in the midlands, Redditch which is south of Birmingham. I bought it in Oxford, and had to stop on the way home because my ass was killing me. I checked the odometer and I'd done 9 miles . . . I started riding in 1968 at age 14, and I'm still riding now at age 70, so it's hardly like I'm the new kid in town. .
needs to be spinning a bit faster than that Ash, plus you dont really want it firing up without knowing the oil level or that the bores are lubed. Another fun-packed project - enjoy
Funny these keep popping up more often now - I'm about 75% through a 1987 FZR1000 Genesis restoration myself. Same story, abused, neglected then dumped and ignored and stored outside for 18 years. I've stripped it to the frame and spent over a year collecting every nut and bolt to make it new. My gas tank looked exactly like that - some sort of coral reef!! These bikes need to be recovered and restored and I'm glad there's another one out there that won't find the bin. Good luck with the restoration and have a look at my channel for my project. Cheers!
No way! Well, that's my evening sorted, binge watching your channel 🤣 there's not many 87's left, once the EXUP came out the original was forgotten! I'm hoping to get mine running this evening to see if the engine's any good 🤞
@@AshRowland Awesome!! So true - I found an 87 that was absolute mint that sold at an auction and I have all the hi-res photos - I'll email them to you for reference. It turns out my SN is 380 and that bike was 360. Anyway, so glad we can connect - I'll send you an email and we can chat further. Cheers.
Had the GPZ1000RX bit of a hand full if you got the wrong line in a corner, owned it for ten years. But the 900 was a quicker bike. Going to be working on my 95 GPZ 1100e get her back on the road.
I had a slightly newer model, 96 if I remember correctly. The "Cat Eye" one. It was an incredible bike, so much power and great handling. Thanks for the video!
What a turn up i was looking to buy that bike as a project present to myself for my 60th in june, however wife wasnt too impressed so ended up with a d5 v70 volvo to work on. Subscribed as im keen to see how it turns out looks better than i thought it would good choice Ash.
I traded in my RD500LC for an fzr1000 in 1987. White and blue. The front brakes seized the first winter. Gearbox was not very good, it'll cost more to get ok than paying £3k for a good one.
No , ill check it out . I bought a Kawazaki Z1000 1983 , a while back . Needs restoring , everything works and its rideable but the fuel tank has rusted through on one side .i like my old school jap bikes , pre electronics and radiators , nice and simple . And i like to see what others do with their projects . Its always educational
Just noticed the stamp on that tax disc - Smethwick, which is a suburb of Birmingham, near West Bromwich. So the owner you seek contact from is seemingly a Brummie.
welcome to the FRZ owners club, i got mine from a mate for £400, the 1990 1002cc 3lg model, its still in my shed being restored, as i couldnt find any original front brake discs for it i put brembo discs on it from an aprilia milli as they are the same size, my fairing is fibreglass with a 1 piece lower section which was hard to get off the bike even if it was on stands... so i cut it in half to cure that little prob.
Only just discovered your channel but I'm gonna have to watch the GPZ ones now, have a nice little GPX750R on a 89 plate, ready for a refurb, 37k miles on it, cut out on me riding back from Chester about a decade and a half ago...
Great to see you with another one I think this one Ash is more cosmetic and there is the bones of a good bike underneath look forward to more videos good luck
Most of the good, long term riders learned on small bike and worked up from there. I had a fzr 1k like this back in the mid nineties. I sold it to a friend and bought a rf900r brand new. Less racy but nearly the same power.
Well ash, I'd have preferred to see you doing aGPZ1000R to contest it with the 900R but this is a cool bike too. I'm already enjoying your voyage of discovery with this one. And I'd love to see how you get on revealing the original paint by sanding back the yellow. Good luck.
@AshRowland There's a good chance it had been down the road, prompting the previous owner to do a full respray BUT that doesn't mean the old paint isn't rescuable. (Double negative is always a positive😊). Depends how you get on de-rusting that tank, in some ways, because it ought to be easiest to sand that back compared to the plastics. There is no point trying until you know it'll hold fuel. The fact that it is currently holding old fuel is a really good sign. That would be high on my list of priorities. And potentially rewarding too.
@@leon0 Yup, I'll give it a shot next week... yes it is holding fuel, and I actually tipped it upside down and none came out, but I reckon the rust might be currently blocking holes and once removed it might start to leak... watch this space lol
Hi Ash, great videos 👍 I’m really enjoying the GPZ project the wheel looks great! I did manage to pause it I just the right place and grab a screen shot. I’m planning on doing a rebuild myself soon and always been a fan of the GPZ.
Haha, I believe you're the only person that noticed that 🤣 You're certainly the first person to mention it in the comments! I finished painting the other one yesterday... Good luck, if you need any help from me then drop me an email
I'm about to embark on a similar journey with a Yamaha R6 my friend gifted me. I've never had a bike or worked on one either. I'm going to purchase the maintenance manual and go Mad Max on it very soon.
I was kind of in the same phase last year, considering any of these three models you mentioned. Thought the Honda was too fat, I did go and see a FZR1000 but did not get it as it was repainted in lime green and the owner did not allow me to do a test ride. So I ended up with a '92 GSX-R 1100. And I also have a GPz900r, it runs but needs a lot of work. Are you sure that battery charger is safe enough (stabilized voltage) to power the bike directly from it? It would be a pity if you fry the electronics.
The GSXR1100 Slabside is the only one that has a following and is still sought after. And it was the one to win the IOM production TT. I had a blue and white one in 1987 and its still the one to have today.
Switchgear is metal. Fairly easy to strip them down , clean out and repaint Those engines are pretty tough. The oil light is an oil level light. But comes on when you press the starter button as a bulb check. You can strip the ignition switch down fairly easily The airbox rubbers will be hard, and a nightmare to get back on. You might be able to rescue them with an ethanol / winter green oil mix The brakes seized up quickly even when new!
Thanks for all that, I'll pop the switchgear off at some point and give them a clean. I'll have a hunt around for some new rubbers if I can't get them back to live 😃
Interesting. I had one of those in '87. Great motor, and great handling for the time, but desperately uncomfortable. The reach to the bars was like they were in another town down the road apiece, and I'm 6'1". Not too bad for short rides, but I went to the south of France on it and that was torture.
@@AshRowland Is the Thundercat the 600 or 750, and the Thunderace the 1000? Probably the same frame whichever way. Yes, I saw the Thunder*** as a development of the EXUP. Pretty much the same bike with different panels and a few odds and sods like upside down forks, which my early EXUP didn't have. Fabulous bikes though, and a joy to cross a continent on. I used to go to the Bol d'Or at Ricard every year in the 1980's, and went basically what we call the A and B roads routes, so it was around 1000 miles each way from Calais to Côte d'Azur (690ish on the motorway) going different routes each year, but generally for example Dijon, in and out of Switzerland at Geneva, back into France for Annecy, over the cols in the Alpes, down the Route Napoleon, Gap, Sisteron, Grasse, then coming out onto the coast somewhere like Nice or Cannes, so a good test of a bike in terms of long distance comfort and rideability.
Man, you're brave... I don't have the stomach for hopeless projects anymore. I have gotten rid of a few lately when I had to admit to myself that I was never going to accomplish them.. That said, my "thing" is old BMWs so I do still have some masochistic tendencies. I'm helping a friend revive his '85 k100 right now.
The GSXR1100 was an absolute beast, the Honda was lardy and the EXUP was more 'sporty'; the GSXR could actually tour a little bit. Looks like you have your work cut out for you there!
I own a 86 GSX-R 1100 and a 87 FZR1000 like this one, and the FZR is far more comfortable than the GSX-R, its the pegs on the GSX-R that makes it uncomfortable over longer rides, they are high, (like the FZR) but also more forward set than the FZR, which gives that weird 80s GSX-R riding position. The FZR is also very narrow at the rear of the tank, due to the carbs and airbox being under the front of the tank, not behind the engine like the GSX-R and most other 80s bikes.
I has one in the early 2000’s. The genny thou’ was my bedroom wall bike. Blisteringly quick, 5 gears, and terrible brakes. Early R1 blue dots drop straight on the front, and really make the bike a lot better.
The brakes are fine if kept in good fettle, modern pads, braided lines and a rebuilt master cylinder and they are good for fast road riding and the odd track day. Problems only arise when they are left to get seized pistons, contaminated pads and old rubber hoses.

I had a feeling you'd go for this by the way you kept moving the camera at the beginning, I had an 89 EXUP in purple & regretted selling it hmmm I wonder if they'll ever get another one in stock as I'd love another one simply because I'm short & I could fit on one of these. I shall be watching the build closely & probably be insanely jealous throughout lol. I hope the frame swingarm etc will be put back to polished alloy again as who in the right mind would paint it white. Good luck with it.
Cool bike, you could put some speed block design on it a la Kenny Roberts, think those had an 18 inch rear wheel not sure what tyre options are available now. Looking forward to sseing you crack on with it.
Sorry Ash 1984 to 88 kawasaki1000rx ......i honestly had one over 170 on a radar gun .....but honestly anything over 150 the time warp efect and handling are not reasuring
These were cutting edge machines in the 80’s such a shame it’s been neglected and repainted as it should have always been respected. I had an RD500 in 1990 and a friend had a FZR1000 EXUP. I thought being flat out on the A1 at 145mph I was the kiddie until he came past me on his Genesis like I was standing still. Awesome performance from the FZR yet this one neglected like a moped. I hope you can restore it to its former self and restore the huge performance! Many older motorcycles have escaped this abuse. I have GSXR1100G, ZXR750L2 and RG500 which are all in very good condition. It’s the outside storage that ruins the life of a bike. 😊
It's such a shame to see bikes like this, thats why I love taking them in and giving them a new home... I'm not really sure what possesed the previous owner to paint it yellow, maybe they wanted a Ducati 748 but couldn't afford one

Nice one Ash, like that the videos aren’t too slick 😅. Was wondering have you made a tool box in you car, so you don’t have to buy everything double. And is the blue garage your place to store the bike ?
Thanks! I bought new both the CBR1000FH in white/red, and the CBR1000FL in black/red. I only rode bikes and only purchased flagship Hondas and Kawis, but I was very familiar with everything else. The only bike that could out-run me anywhere, and from the lights... and easily, was the Honda RC30 which I rode frequently as my friend bought one new. Honda was king at that time.
Ash, if the fuel tank has not been lined previously, then may I suggest a fuel tank cleaning method that I have used with great success. Step 1: Drain and dry fuel tank with compressed air gun, fuel tap removed , and get as much of the filth out as possible. Step 2: re mount the tap and filler cap. Put a fair amount of acetone in the tank and slosh it around thoroughly for 5 minutes or so. Remove tap and filler cap drain acetone and repeat thoroughly blowing out the tank with air gun. Do this OUTSIDE as the clouds of rust will be colossal! Step three: Install fuel tap once more, making sure it is liquid tight. Place fuel tank so that it can be filled to the brim with Evaporust. Let the Evaporust sit in the tank for 2 days or more. Step 4: drain the Evaporust back into its container (it's good for multiple uses), then thoroughly rinse the tank out with water. Immediately blow as dry as possible with air gun and finally insert a hair dryer in filler opening and leave running for several minutes. The tank will look like new inside. The Evaporust is safe to use and will not damage parts or even burn skin. It's also completely non-toxic. Cheers!
@@CountCraigula It's £35 a gallon over here in the UK, and I'll bet it's watered down as well lol, so for 5 gallons it'd be like $200! I'll try the £20 vinegar first 😃

I would try Deox-C in the fuel tank, I've just done one of my bikes, it's made a huge difference
I'll give it a shot next week
I bought my dream bike in 2014. 1989 Yamaha FZR1000. It only had 4,002 miles on it. It was last registered in 1991. Still had original tires on it. 10 years and 24,000 miles later its ready for a major service. These bikes are still dam fast. Good luck getting it going.
Thanks buddy 👍
That will be an EXUP then?
I bought one of those in '89. The only new bike I ever bought.
It was fabulous. Superbly comfortable for long distance rides - unlike the non-EXUP FZR like in the vid.
@@peterbee88 maybe I can get an EXUP seat lol
@@AshRowland
Maybe.
That won't cure the reach to the bars though - which you might not notice riding locally. But as I said, I went to the south of France on mine, and it was torture.
I live in the midlands, Redditch which is south of Birmingham.
I bought it in Oxford, and had to stop on the way home because my ass was killing me.
I checked the odometer and I'd done 9 miles . . .
I started riding in 1968 at age 14, and I'm still riding now at age 70, so it's hardly like I'm the new kid in town.
.
awesome, another sweet old bike to work on! Looking forward to this one...as well as the GPz
Thanks Steve! The GPZ is at a stage of waiting for me to clean and restore the individual parts, which takes so much time!
needs to be spinning a bit faster than that Ash, plus you dont really want it firing up without knowing the oil level or that the bores are lubed. Another fun-packed project - enjoy
Thanks Chris, yea, I was probably a bit impatient with it 🤣
Funny these keep popping up more often now - I'm about 75% through a 1987 FZR1000 Genesis restoration myself.
I had a gpz 1000 rx and was always surprised how much better the 900 r rode .
@darenreynolds8824 that's probably why the 900 way outlived the 1000
@@darenreynolds8824 I fitted 17” wheels to mine back in the day. It was a big improvement. Always preferred the look of the RX though.
Thanks mate, I'd imagine the 96 model rides fairly similarly to the 80s ones, they didn't change much over the years
What a turn up i was looking to buy that bike as a project present to myself for my 60th in june, however wife wasnt too impressed so ended up with a d5 v70 volvo to work on. Subscribed as im keen to see how it turns out looks better than i thought it would good choice Ash.
Hey Michael, maybe you can buy it as a running bike for your 61st? 🤣
I traded in my RD500LC for an fzr1000 in 1987. White and blue.
The front brakes seized the first winter.
Gearbox was not very good, it'll cost more to get ok than paying £3k for a good one.
I get the feeling this is going to cost me a lot more
I did my 748 ducati tank with electrolysis method and inner coat is called Red Coat here in Aust, 7 years ago and still perfect today my friend. Steve
Thanks! I'd love to do a Ducati at some point, I've heard they're a pig to work on though
I owned one of these ,swapped it for an R1 . I would recommend serving the exup valve ,they have a real habit of seizing 😮
It's actually the pre-exup model, 1987, EXUP came in 1989. The pre-exup was only around for a year and a half I think,
Try filling the tank with vinegar and leave it for a day or two . Great rust remover
That's the plan.... have you seen my attempt on the GPZ tank? 🤣
Subscribed, I don't know why, I will never undertake any project like this! Like your laid back style and 80s bikes in general.
🤣 thanks buddy, 80s bikes are the best to work on, not complicated at all
Just noticed the stamp on that tax disc - Smethwick, which is a suburb of Birmingham, near West Bromwich.
So the owner you seek contact from is seemingly a Brummie.
I'm sure if they see the videos they'll get in touch maybe lol
welcome to the FRZ owners club, i got mine from a mate for £400, the 1990 1002cc 3lg model, its still in my shed being restored, as i couldnt find any original front brake discs for it i put brembo discs on it from an aprilia milli as they are the same size, my fairing is fibreglass with a 1 piece lower section which was hard to get off the bike even if it was on stands... so i cut it in half to cure that little prob.
Thanks buddy! Awesome, I'd be interested in seeing some pics if you can email me?
Only just discovered your channel but I'm gonna have to watch the GPZ ones now, have a nice little GPX750R on a 89 plate, ready for a refurb, 37k miles on it, cut out on me riding back from Chester about a decade and a half ago...
Ah cool, thanks for watching mate... probably just your carbs a bit blocked... they'll definitely be blocked now if you've left it for 15 years 😆
Great to see you with another one I think this one Ash is more cosmetic and there is the bones of a good bike underneath look forward to more videos good luck
I reckon so as well, the tank needs a lot of work, and I'm not convinced the cooling system is ok, but we will see
Now both we have the same two projects, at the begging of this year I bought a GPZ 900 and 2 year ago a FZR 1000. For now I didn't rode the gpz
No way! Well, let's get them all finished then stand back and admire them
Most of the good, long term riders learned on small bike and worked up from there. I had a fzr 1k like this back in the mid nineties. I sold it to a friend and bought a rf900r brand new. Less racy but nearly the same power.
Very nice mate! Was yours canary yellow too? 🤣
Well ash, I'd have preferred to see you doing aGPZ1000R to contest it with the 900R but this is a cool bike too. I'm already enjoying your voyage of discovery with this one. And I'd love to see how you get on revealing the original paint by sanding back the yellow. Good luck.
Yea, wouldn't that be great!? Original colours would have been lovely
Needs the Roberts Speed Blocks to offset the " YELLOW " if you go down that road * chefs kiss *
If you squint, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a Ducati 748 right now 🤣
Nice one ash, looking forward to it. Nm breakers yard, you'll have your own bike shop soon 😊

Great video I bought a 1987 honda vfr 750f rc24 about 18 months which had been left in a garage for 16 years
Very very nice, email me some photos when you get chance I'd love to see before and after
I'm about to embark on a similar journey with a Yamaha R6 my friend gifted me. I've never had a bike or worked on one either. I'm going to purchase the maintenance manual and go Mad Max on it very soon.
If it's an early one then the carb removal will be very similar to this FZR 😊
I was kind of in the same phase last year, considering any of these three models you mentioned. Thought the Honda was too fat, I did go and see a FZR1000 but did not get it as it was repainted in lime green and the owner did not allow me to do a test ride. So I ended up with a '92 GSX-R 1100. And I also have a GPz900r, it runs but needs a lot of work.
Are you sure that battery charger is safe enough (stabilized voltage) to power the bike directly from it? It would be a pity if you fry the electronics.
Nice! Yea the charger's fine for a little while, electrics seem all good 😊
The GSXR1100 Slabside is the only one that has a following and is still sought after. And it was the one to win the IOM production TT. I had a blue and white one in 1987 and its still the one to have today.
I'll keep an eye out for one!
They all have a following of some degree... the GSX-R1100 is a great looking bike!
Made me chuckle, good luck with the bike be interesting to get the old paint back 👍
Thanks buddy, who knows what it looks like under there 🤣
Switchgear is metal. Fairly easy to strip them down , clean out and repaint
Those engines are pretty tough.
The oil light is an oil level light. But comes on when you press the starter button as a bulb check.
You can strip the ignition switch down fairly easily
The airbox rubbers will be hard, and a nightmare to get back on. You might be able to rescue them with an ethanol / winter green oil mix
The brakes seized up quickly even when new!
Thanks for all that, I'll pop the switchgear off at some point and give them a clean. I'll have a hunt around for some new rubbers if I can't get them back to live 😃
@@AshRowland , I am currently rebuilding my FZ750. Quite similar in a lot of ways. I have Cerakoted the switchgear housings.
Interesting.
I had one of those in '87.
Great motor, and great handling for the time, but desperately uncomfortable.
The reach to the bars was like they were in another town down the road apiece, and I'm 6'1".
Not too bad for short rides, but I went to the south of France on it and that was torture.
I have noticed that from moving it around, much more of a leaning forward position compared to my '99 Thundercat
@@AshRowland
Is the Thundercat the 600 or 750, and the Thunderace the 1000?
Fun fact: someone put 4XFZR1000 engines into a supercar
I need to find this!!
a lot of that looks familiar as I had a thunderace back in the day, should be an interesting project
Yea, it feels very similar to my '98 Thundercat
Man, you're brave... I don't have the stomach for hopeless projects anymore. I have gotten rid of a few lately when I had to admit to myself that I was never going to accomplish them.. That said, my "thing" is old BMWs so I do still have some masochistic tendencies. I'm helping a friend revive his '85 k100 right now.
Very nice mate, Kate's grandad likes the old BMWs, I'll do one at some point 😊
I have an '89 r100gs and I am angling to eventually own this k100 I am helping with. Two German mistresses will be enough for me!

The GSXR1100 was an absolute beast, the Honda was lardy and the EXUP was more 'sporty'; the GSXR could actually tour a little bit.
Looks like you have your work cut out for you there!
Tell me about it! 🫣
This seems an early model, no EXUP yet on one of these
@@bartsignaal that's right, pre-EXUP
Thanks for the heads up, I'm sure there's many straight swap parts from the R1, or even the Thundercat/Thunderace
The brakes are fine if kept in good fettle, modern pads, braided lines and a rebuilt master cylinder and they are good for fast road riding and the odd track day. Problems only arise when they are left to get seized pistons, contaminated pads and old rubber hoses.

It's such a shame to see bikes like this, thats why I love taking them in and giving them a new home... I'm not really sure what possesed the previous owner to paint it yellow, maybe they wanted a Ducati 748 but couldn't afford one

Cheers!
With the price of Evaporust it might be cheaper to buy another tank.
Thanks for this... I'll give it a go, but I'll probably use 20% vinegar instead as I already have 20 litres of the stuff left over from the GPZ tank 😃
