Hi Rob & Chris. This looks like a 996 tiptronic which has had a 997 gt3 conversion. Careful what you spend on it as modified 996 sometimes Ho for less than original ones even though it looks great! We had flashing transmission dash lights along with erratic gear changes. If this what is happening to yours the fix was a new multi plug which controls gear selection. It’s plug and play on the drivers side of the gearbox. Only option I could find was from Porsche but not too bad at about £250. Thank you for all your vids. Much appreciated.

As you said it is not a GT3, it is a 996 with and aftermarlet body kit to make it look like a 997. The 996 was not well received whereas the 997 has icon status so its made it look better than a tired 996. Its not really GT3 replica as its has rear wing vents which are Turbo/GT2 items and the rear bumber has twin tailpipes GT3 has twin pipes in the centre and rear bumper has lower vents the GT3 does not have. It does have 997 Gen2 look rear lights which was a costly conversion. The front and rear bumpers are not replicas of GT3 they are their own look for the body kit this guy made, and the rear wing is not a 997 GT3 rear wing its more like the 997 GT3 RS. So its a bit of a parts bin 911 with aftermarket body kit but its still a 911 and that makes it worthwhile. The electics of a 996 to 997 light conversion was not a simple plug-and-play task, so be wise to look over all of its electrics.
997 turbos go for £100,000 to £200,000 as its had the rear wing turbo vents done, you could get a 997 turbo front and rear bumper boot lid and sell it for more as a 997 turbo replica than a GT3 replica. And sell those parts it has now to another 911 enthusiast. Great project to follow either way.

Ask Porsche UK to investigate the VIN to get the original build spec, restore it back to a 911 GTS, its only a GT3 replica, its a bit like an mk4 Escort Eclipse done up to look like an XR3i at the minute. All Shane Lynch Motorsport ever did were bodykits and wheels on cars very little else, rarely touched anything mechanical.

It’s a 996 dressed up as a later 997. It would have come out of the factory with the ‘fried egg’ headlights so I’m guessing it’s had 997 wings fitted to accommodate the 997 lights. I’m pretty sure that the rear lights are 997 too. As a Porsche owner I can tell you that downsides for resale of this generation are the Tiptronic gearbox & the IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing, most buyers will want to be assured that this has been upgraded as a complete failure could result in a £10k engine rebuild. The later 997.2 resolved these issues so sell for much higher prices.

See comment below!! (Paul Lewis), i couldn't of said it better myself! Being a car guy (Rob), and a Lambo owner you really surprised me with your comments on this project, its not really anything..... Just the kind of motor a young chav with cash would lash up. 'Trying to be a GT3' has got to make it worth less than the base car it started from....... and remember its just a torque converter box - with a manual over ride for shift, so the worse option they did..... Its a box of issues... possibly expensive..... and the list will grow im sure as you get further into it. The chap who moved it on probably had good reason......... Without good history, old 911s are a nightmare....

Adjust the cables for the selecter under the centre console. The alarm goes off on these, if the battery has been off. you put the key p1 to disconnect the battery and the same to put a new battery on, service the tip tronic, you have a broken rod in the door handle, if the alternator is playing up you can just replace the rectifier part, its all nice bits to do to be fair

When these 996’s go flat or the battery gets low the alarm will go off when trying to start it which is mentally loud.
I would start with a new battery as by the look of the dashboard reading the alternator is working well.
When changing the battery KEEP THE IGNITION ON/POSITION 2 from the start as it will stop the alarm going off when you disconnect the old battery and connect the new one.
Also Heritage Parts now do Porsche parts and I’m sure would love to help with any bits you needed.

Rob - always worth putting a 911 or any car with the engine in the mid or rear onto a transporter or trailer backwards. (if you can.)
It helps avoid funny weight distribution and keeps everything on an even keel.

Well done Guys. I think this might need a lot of TLC. If it's a 2000 car, it's a 996 with a 3.4 ltr motor. The body kit is a bit GT3/GT2. The 997 GT3 didn't have air intakes in front of the rear wheels, only the Turbo and the GT2. Give the gearbox a service, that will help. And I can recommend Spyder Performance for any suspension parts you may need to cure the rattles. I have then on my 986 Boxster. Hopefully the mice have not got in there!

I have said it many times, if not on this channel, cars like this one don't fair well just sat in a garage. I think you said something along those lines Rob. I am not a Porsche expert but there is a bearing that needs to be checked and changed at a certain mileage, it begins with the letter 'I' but I just can't think of the name. Also get a bore scope and check for bore score. It didn't sound like it was suffering from it but it would be worth checking now before you go too far. You already know that you have to check for rodent activity and yes they can get into tiny spaces. I think you have a great motor there and I am pleased for you both. The things I mentioned are not negative they are just things to check on these cars. Great video Rob and Chris and a good addition to SRUK. 👍👍

Great cars these, not without their issues - but well worth persevering with. Parasitic battery leak is a very common issue. Fairly easy to fix - just needs a specialist auto electrician on it. Starting issues usually down to an £80 starter cable needing replaced - and make sure a new battery is fitted once leccy gremlins are fixed - and is man enough for the job! Otherwise ace. Really like the 997.2 rear lights and ducktail. Could be made to look like a 997 Sport Classic with the right wheels 👌

Never rule out a diff battery. They can short internally and spike all sorts. I’d never spend hours and hours searching for gremlins without knowing it’s 100% condition. Learnt this on Land Rovers

I had a Boxster a few years ago from copart.
    Absolutely drove me crazy.
I ended up completely ripping the interior out as mice had made a few homes in the thing.
But I had nearly the same fault the immobiliser kept on kicking in when it was running.
Only every like week it wouldn't start wouldn't hold charge in battery but found a body control module that was under the front seat.
Think it was passenger side but can't remember.
But it got damp and done all the connections and mice had has a munch on the wires.
My first choice would be see where that module is.
And them door handles depending on what age and spec they do have wires and alarm system wires coming from door locks and handles.
I had to strip mine down and WD-40 everything
But I got it back to 100% perfect.
But never again stayed well away from Porsches.
Nice motor good luck with it.
If you didn't have grey hair you soon will 🤣🤣🤣

If you get further issues with that key release , the ignition switch on 996s is a known failure point. You can take key out and ignition stays on. You can replace electrical portion of switch without changing key. There is a part made by same manufacturer as OEM at significantly reduced cost.

This is a 996 that’s had a front end switch and headlight upgrade to look like a 997. Is it the 3.4 or 3.6? The early 996s and 997 had bore issues, also prone to IMS bearing failure.

    • @rowenlawrence1797
      @rowenlawrence1797 Год назад

you can tell it is a 3.4 from the dashboard clocks -only goes up to 175 when the 3.6 have a stupid 200mph clock instead

Re intermittent faults, years ago my mother’s Fiesta was very temperamental. Numerous AA visits, batteries, alternators, kept acting up. One day in a garage a mechanic was watching the engine while being started and noticed a tiny crack in an electrical cable. Replaced cable, never gave trouble again.
