Lifting Beams - New sawmill platform build

  • We continue our build of the wood shed, sawmill, and solar kiln by lifting large beams and posts to finish framing the sawmill platform side of the building. We will have two fully open walls for easy access when moving logs and boards around the mill.
The rough footprint of the sawmill side is about 10' x 18' and it will be on the roof above this that we will be mounting our solar panels in the future.

I really admire how the two of you are making it work! You don’t have all the expensive equipment, tools and machinery that a lot of homesteaders have but you use your hard work ethic and determination to keep you going. Building a homestead from scratch on raw land isn’t for most people. It’s so great to be able to watch the two of you making it happen!

Great job you 2! I had to hoist 6 25ft 12inch I beams to build my first workshop as it was on a budget that didnt include "help lifting them". My wife and I did basically the same with 2 ladders one on each end and she would move the ladder as I lifted one side and we slowly worked it up. That building will serve you well in your climate for sure! Cant wait to see it in use!. Oh for the alaskan sawmill turn it around and push with the bottom of the bar cutting versus pull with the top of the bar. One step further is I got a cheap trailer winch (the smallest i could find) and attached it to the mill and then just screwed a board on the opposite end verticallly to attach it to then used the winch wiht one hand to move the saw through the wood and it works SO much easier. Plus i dont have a sawmill so its the chainsaw or nothing for now. If you watch "Survivingringworm" YT channel he has a full indepth "how too" on those sawmills and he has done all the testing over years and thousands of boards. It was SUPER helpful to learn via his mistakes versus my own LOL

the burl is awesome, it's just upside down, the other way up you could hang stuff from the branches you leave behind.
you don't have plans to make the mill base longer, it looks a fairly easy task, and would have saved you a bunch of time with that large log.
    keep up the good work.

A 'spud' is what you need. A larger chisel with a much longer stouter handle (up to shovel length). You can also find them in concave and convex form to work around the branches and such, although the flat one is most popular for just barking. The head is quite heavy so that you can get momentum going for you as you strip the bark. (also works wonders for getting up glued down carpet or vinyl)

Block and tackle with a tripod of smaller diameter trees taller than the height you need. If you do not have access to a tractor with pallet forks or other machinery, use physics with the advantage of pulleys and the tripod. You got the beam up there but that was unsafe with that much weight. I understand you are roughing it but be careful.

Hi! Please, I beg you very much, lift weights correctly, the way
professional movers and weightlifters do, not counting the strength of the back, but at the expense of the strength of the legs!
The back is always weaker than the legs, so all professionals, in order to lift something from the ground, do not bend down, but squat with a straight back, take a load and then with a STRAIGHT BACK!!! They stand up and, due to the push of their legs, they put a load on their chest, like a barbell.
Otherwise, you will get a dislocation of the spine and a vertebral hernia. You won't notice it right away,
But in a few years it will manifest itself and you will become disabled, and then someone will treat you in the forest?
Who will follow you lying down?
Take care of yourself! Lift weights correctly. Then, on the contrary, you will only be stronger and healthier!!!
Look at how a weightlifter lifts a barbell over his head and you will understand everything.
