Remote Life Alaska
Добавлен 12 июл 2022
Hello!
Welcome to our journey.
We have decided to take our small family on a big change. Moving from city life in Wisconsin where everything is given to you, to the off grid life in Alaska where everything takes time and lots of hard work. Our goal is to appreciate everything we have, and build a life we are proud of.
In only one years time we managed to deal with an unexpected amount of challenges where our grit and determination was tested. Within this first year we also learned we were expecting and welcomed our daughter into the family. If there is one thing we have learned so far it is to expect the unexpected. Let's see what happens next!

A Cozy Alaskan Christmas - Decorations and holiday cooking
Просмотров 14 тыс.17 часов назад
We took the week off - kind of - to spend time together as a new family of three. The cabin was decorated with every holiday decoration we could find and the marathon of treat making was had! We focused on making memories and combining our old traditions with some new ones. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Cabin Wall Progress - Insulation, Wires, and Wallcovering
Просмотров 18 тыс.День назад
With an endless amount of work to be done, this week we shifted our focus back inside the cabin. We ran wires for the upstairs outlets, filled insulation gaps, and continued to install tongue and groove wallcovering. As always we wish we accomplished more this week but we are also pleased with any progress towards the completion of this house. With the holidays fast approaching we will be takin...
Splitting Firewood - Adding more to our woodshed
Просмотров 24 тыс.14 дней назад
As we progress into our second winter in Alaska, the need for more firewood has not gone away. We have plenty of wood to make it through winter - it just needs to be cut into rounds and split in order to use it. Cody wants to be outside doing the work but he is under strict orders to stay inside and rest so that his hand can fully heal back to normal. This week we also got a surprise visit from...
Alaska Moose Harvest - A Thanksgiving surprise
Просмотров 79 тыс.21 день назад
After being a part of the Alaska Roadkill List for almost one year we finally got the call! Thanksgiving night, in negative 18 degree F weather, we set out to pick up our first moose. With temperatures being so cold we rushed to process the moose as quickly as possible. We are very grateful for getting this moose. Our freezer is now full of many meals to last us until hunting season next year. ...
Cody's Hand Injury - Thankful for our community
Просмотров 13 тыс.21 день назад
Here is the deal with Cody's hand injury. He had a small snow machine accident that resulted in his Scaphoid bone breaking in his wrist. We got him into surgery and he is now on the road to recovery. Secondly, we hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. We appreciate everyone who watches our videos and is along for the ride with this crazy life of ours. HUGE shoutout to Jessica and her lo...
Canning Beef Broth - Rendering beef Tallow
Просмотров 13 тыс.Месяц назад
A perfect winter day activity around the wood cook stove. The cold temperatures are the perfect time for slow cooking of broths and fats. Not everything happens perfectly, and we strive to show the good and the bad. Two jars broke this go around - very sad - but we will keep an eye and see if we can detect the reasoning. Either way there is a lot more canning and preserving in our future. Our M...
Water Tank Loft - Installing flooring and a winter refill
Просмотров 18 тыс.Месяц назад
For the first time we are able to fill our big water tank during the winter. Getting a well drilled is going to allow us to use more water at home and take less trips to town for hauling and laundromat services. While the tank was low enough on water to move around, this was our chance to also get the flooring installed. Hopes were to install flooring in our second loft as well but due to an in...
Tongue and Groove Wallcovering - Starting work inside the cabin
Просмотров 26 тыс.Месяц назад
We frequently change our minds on what project we are working on next, and putting up our interior wallcovering was a spur of the moment decision. We started about a month ago and ended up needing to take a few weeks break so the wood could acclimate to our cabin before continuing. Getting the walls covered may not help us save space, but visually it makes a huge difference. Being able to cover...
Solar Panel Mount - Building the frame to lift above the sawmill
Просмотров 27 тыс.Месяц назад
The solar panels are sitting in a less than ideal location for harvesting sunshine, leading us to move mounting the panels up on the priority list. We designed the location and angle of the roof for our woodshed specifically for mounting our panels. We purchased our panels shortly after moving last year and since then there are new models being sold in place of the ones we have. Luckily they ar...
Processing Beef - Our alternative for not getting a moose
Просмотров 32 тыс.2 месяца назад
We spent a little bit of time this summer for moose hunting, but were unsuccessful. While we are on the list for the state in the event of a moose becoming available, we have decided to bring home and process half of a cow. This was a young dairy cow so it was a bit smaller and did not provide as much meat but it still gave us the practice working with such a large animal. In the future we hope...
The Snow has Arrived - Starting our second Alaskan winter
Просмотров 21 тыс.2 месяца назад
We finally have a substantial amount of snow to mark the start of winter. Our truck has been cleaned and moved down to the lot and the snow machines are prepped. Winter chores are starting. As the snow falls we need to keep our solar panels cleared, greenhouse knocked off, and make sure our machines are prepped and ready to ride. Sawmill Loft - Framing and planking our storage space
Просмотров 24 тыс.2 месяца назад
Having storage above our woodshed and sawmill areas is one of the best after thoughts of this build. We finally had time to get back to working on our woodshed and wanted to work at getting the loft set up to start moving our things into a covered space. Winter is just around the corner and we need to start prioritizing moving our stuff that is under tarps into our new storage space. Having a c...
Drilling for Water Off-Grid - The final answers to our well story
Просмотров 31 тыс.2 месяца назад
The well company has officially arrived, and they brought their big rig this time. It is down to business doing our best to drill for water. Attempt after attempt, as long as they do not give up on us we will not give up on them. Our well story comes with plenty of bad news, but determination to keep pushing may just bring us what we are looking for. It has been a stressful last year full of un...

So glad you figured out the camera settings. That was fantastic 🎉
Thankk you for taking the time and effort to film and edit this. The Northern Lights are a truly mesmorising sight, I saw them in Finland a few years ago and I was absolutely awe struck as I am watching them here. They make me realise what a wonderful world this is and could be more so if we all lived in harmony with nature and each other. As great as all of the New Year Fireworks were around the World, do they even compare with this show?
Beatiful and breathtaking. So glad you guys captured it. Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year! Love and be safe!😘❄⛄VE
