Remote Life Alaska
Добавлен 12 июл 2022
Hello!
Welcome to our journey.
We have decided to take our small family on a big change. Moving from city life in Wisconsin where everything is given to you, to the off grid life in Alaska where everything takes time and lots of hard work. Our goal is to appreciate everything we have, and build a life we are proud of.
In only one years time we managed to deal with an unexpected amount of challenges where our grit and determination was tested. Within this first year we also learned we were expecting and welcomed our daughter into the family. If there is one thing we have learned so far it is to expect the unexpected. Let's see what happens next!

Water Tank Loft - Installing flooring and a winter refill
For the first time we are able to fill our big water tank during the winter. Getting a well drilled is going to allow us to use more water at home and take less trips to town for hauling and laundromat services.
While the tank was low enough on water to move around, this was our chance to also get the flooring installed. Hopes were to install flooring in our second loft as well but due to an injury we spent most of our time in town.

Tongue and Groove Wallcovering - Starting work inside the cabin
Просмотров 24 тыс.День назад
We frequently change our minds on what project we are working on next, and putting up our interior wallcovering was a spur of the moment decision. We started about a month ago and ended up needing to take a few weeks break so the wood could acclimate to our cabin before continuing. Getting the walls covered may not help us save space, but visually it makes a huge difference. Being able to cover...
Solar Panel Mount - Building the frame to lift above the sawmill
Просмотров 25 тыс.14 дней назад
The solar panels are sitting in a less than ideal location for harvesting sunshine, leading us to move mounting the panels up on the priority list. We designed the location and angle of the roof for our woodshed specifically for mounting our panels. We purchased our panels shortly after moving last year and since then there are new models being sold in place of the ones we have. Luckily they ar...
Processing Beef - Our alternative for not getting a moose
Просмотров 27 тыс.21 день назад
We spent a little bit of time this summer for moose hunting, but were unsuccessful. While we are on the list for the state in the event of a moose becoming available, we have decided to bring home and process half of a cow. This was a young dairy cow so it was a bit smaller and did not provide as much meat but it still gave us the practice working with such a large animal. In the future we hope...
The Snow has Arrived - Starting our second Alaskan winter
Просмотров 21 тыс.21 день назад
We finally have a substantial amount of snow to mark the start of winter. Our truck has been cleaned and moved down to the lot and the snow machines are prepped. Winter chores are starting. As the snow falls we need to keep our solar panels cleared, greenhouse knocked off, and make sure our machines are prepped and ready to ride. Our Mailing Address: PO Box 13372, Trapper Creek, AK 99683 E-Mail...
Sawmill Loft - Framing and planking our storage space
Просмотров 23 тыс.Месяц назад
Having storage above our woodshed and sawmill areas is one of the best after thoughts of this build. We finally had time to get back to working on our woodshed and wanted to work at getting the loft set up to start moving our things into a covered space. Winter is just around the corner and we need to start prioritizing moving our stuff that is under tarps into our new storage space. Having a c...
Drilling for Water Off-Grid - The final answers to our well story
Просмотров 31 тыс.Месяц назад
The well company has officially arrived, and they brought their big rig this time. It is down to business doing our best to drill for water. Attempt after attempt, as long as they do not give up on us we will not give up on them. Our well story comes with plenty of bad news, but determination to keep pushing may just bring us what we are looking for. It has been a stressful last year full of un...
Harvesting Carrots - Planting Garlic and Transplanting Rhubarb

It is time to plant garlic and harvest the last of the food out of the greenhouse. Freezing temperatures are starting to show up meaning winter is not far off. 00:00 Intro 00:23 Transplanting Rhubarb 05:41 Planting Garlic (Northern White - Hardneck) 11:09 Quick Clean of the Greenhouse 15:25 Harvesting Carrots 19:20 Cleaning and Preserving Carrots Our Mailing Address: PO Box 13372, Trapper Creek...
Woodshed Roofing - Covering our sawmill and firewood
Просмотров 31 тыс.Месяц назад
We finally managed to quickly get the roofing up on our woodshed building. Over the majority of the building are steel panels. The area above our solar kiln we chose to go with a black tinted plastic so that light would be let in, yet the overall aesthetic of the building stayed cohesive. We still need to add the peak and a lot of screws to hold it down in place. We quickly ran out of time this...
Costco Grocery Haul - Winter Stock Up
Просмотров 105 тыс.Месяц назад
It is time for our first grocery stock up at Costco down in Anchorage. Our goal is to get enough basic groceries to last 6 months, the majority of winter. Diapers were the most important item to stock up on as well as having an additional freezer to store food. Overall this was a successful trip, we stayed on track buying most of what was on our list and straying very little. We will still be g...
Clearing more Land - Dozer work for a garden and yard area
Просмотров 36 тыс.Месяц назад
We got an opportunity to use some extra time on a rented dozer for the week so we paused projects and focused on moving things around to clear more land. We continued clearing around the house to make space for a garden area as well as a future yard. Every step gets us closer to our final vision of this property. All the land clearing makes space for new areas but also opens up the property to ...
Cleaning the Woodstove - Getting it ready for winter
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 месяца назад
While the woodstove was being moved around during our flooring install, we took the time to do a thorough cleaning of our wood stove and pipe. The stove has been pretty neglected over the summer so it was much needed! Signs are appearing that winter is near, the temperature is dropping along with the leaves on the trees. It is a nice feeling to be able to start a fire in the woodstove again in ...
Finishing the Flooring - Our winter plans for the cabin
Просмотров 17 тыс.2 месяца назад
The flooring is complete! At least for the main level of our cabin, we still have both of the lofts to do over the winter. It is a great feeling to have the flooring done and will be just in time for Rowan to start crawling. There are a handful of inside projects we want to work on over the winter time. We hope to finish our flooring, finish the walls, and start on some very important storage m...
Woodshed Trusses - Always need more logs for lumber
Просмотров 23 тыс.2 месяца назад
In order to continue on with our woodshed build we need to fell more trees and mill boards. With Lori's mom still being around for a couple more days we used that time to both go into the woods and focus on hauling logs to the property. We believe we have enough lumber to finish our build, now we just need the nice weather and time to complete the project. It is a busy time on the homestead but...

please make sure the loft can hold that much weight
L, you work like me; carefully, methodically, with an eye towards perfection.
Lol yall going the opposite direction I'm wanting to go upgrading to a well I really like the idea of watter catchment that simplified gravity feed is ideal ish I'm going to have solar and Battry bank so simple 12v pump just makes sense I'm doing everything for coust savings get bills as simple cheap next to no maintenance as possible before retirement
GREAT FAMILY OUTING . I NOTICE YOU GUYS WERE WEARING OUTER GEAR BUT POOR PRECIOUS BABY DIDN'T HAVE ANY SOCKS. I HOPE SHE HAS A JACKET. IT'S GETTING COLD THERE RIGHT?
Why are people so cruel? Somehow I thought people would be kinder there.
I was telling my son it would probably take a week or two to get over the shock of such a big move. He said it would probably take a year or two... lol!
Hi Beautiful Family, you got some Gd items Shopping, your Baby Girl is Absolutely Beautiful. Thank You for Sharing your Amazing Life's , till the Next, Stay Warm and Safe 🥰🥰🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴
Things are really coming along. Rowan has grown a lot and is so cute.
If you cook on cast-iron one meal a day, I was told that sufficient iron for your body
Love to see you both working together, you done a brilliant job, looks lovely ❤❤❤❤❤
You could either go with an upright cylinder tank or you get a pickup truck 175 gallon tank and swap it out with the 350 and slide it up against the wall. I personally would probably do two 175 tanks up against the wall facing each other with individual shut off valves coming from each tank. Then you can fill up one tank and fill up the other tank then run off of one tank and once you've depleted the other tank you can switch over to the other tank then fill up the other tank when the other tank has depleted so there isn't a time crunch to have to fill up a tank when it has emptied then you can plan on doing it on a nice day in the winter
I'd recommend a filter for the water. Amazon should have something you can attach to the house after first running it for a bit outside
Why do you do all the work and Cody does not?
The place is really coming together. The flooring looks great and it looks like it's very easy to work with. Lori, you always have an audience when installing it. That Rowan sure loves the camera. What a ham!😊 She even did a little dance for your viewers. Super sweet. Just want to take time to wish you guys a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that you count your blessings every day. Take care and God bless.
The baby is adorable.☺️
I've the same LED lights in my ceilings throughout the house, 6 years now. Perfect!
Don’t forget, 11% rebate ends on thanksgiving.
Hi doll i am a little confused why is it you are doing and your Husband is playing with your Daughter . And He is going to have to get a little better has Meconial to survive up there your great mom and partner 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
How is it you know more than him ???? He is just your helper . ok fine just wierd
Lori may like doing flooring better than Cody? It's ok, she doesn't like cutting trees as much as Cody does. It's called team work and partnership
Good to see you guys progressing its a lot of work but you get them done again congratulations on the well I'm sure it makes a major difference !!
I highly recommend putting chains on side by side
Great job
Y’all are doing great! Your little girl is growing so big. Enjoy that it’s fleeting to say to least. Keep on Truckin!😎🇺🇸
Hi Lori you are a very hard worker indeed so all these jobs take time but your getting there aww rowan standing up she's always smiling into the camera so clever she is and loves all the attention beautiful little girl always love your video's take care oh hope cody is back in action soon bless you all 👍👍❤❤❤👋
Just curious as to why you are spending time on a loft floor when your living area needs finishing. It’s a mess.
When they did last week's video they need to finish the wall finishing complete so they can do the built in's, until then they will have things around. Have you ever lived in a space with no built in storage or thru a remodel? Unless you have you can't understand the process or challenges. They are doing amazing
Flooring is looking great. You are a pro at it. Congratulations on the well water making life easier one step at a time.
Great to see the baby getting involved. Gonna be editing and filming soon enough. I'm sure you'll pick up a few more subscribers too.
Ooh Miss Cutie Pie Rowan. She is not camera shy. What an intelligent girl. Very observant. And she’s standing already!! ❤️ wishing Cody a speedy recovery. Take it easy. 🇦🇺fan
If you find a way to elevate the tank outside somewhere and use it for water storage. You will then not need to put in a pressure tank and waste power on running the well pump all of the time. Just fill up the tank when needed and the elevated tank will give you all the water pressure that you need.
Your daughter is amazingly adorable ❤
We have an off grid cabin in Colorado and fill two tanks in crawl space. We let our well run at least 20 minutes outside before putting hose on it to fill tanks. Maybe next time run it outside before you fill it again. Also we use a britta water pitcher for our drinking water as i think i taste the plastic tank. Great job on flooring
Cody, i hope you didn't hurt your wrist to bad. It wont be long and you two will be able to just give Rowan the camera and let her handle it lol. I think a star of the show has been born! 😅😂😅
Way to go my friends! I am not looking forward todo flooring again anytime soon
Hope Cody is alright ✌️
I think a walkway bridge from one loft to another would look great and be easier to turn into a child’s bedroom. Plus be safer to use the one staircase for safe access.
On your previous video, you said that you had to be quiet so that you didn’t wake your baby. I ran a home daycare for 30 years and the best thing they ever came out with was sound machines I would run those during my nap time, and the kids would sleep really well. Love your videos and your little family.❤
Water is just a little more than 8# per gallon so be careful with the weight up there.
6×8 would b nice😊
Wood Shed is important 😊😮😂
Love the comic relief 😊😊😊😊😊Mr Dog
Oh and by the way I had to run my well for a month when I first had it drilled so let her run won't hurt it at all gl
Don't the The electric start work on that brand new generac I've had 3 of them so far None of them last more than 2 years Now I got a Harbor freight and I've had this 1 for 4 years never had a problem yet knock on wood but hopefully u guys have better luck then I have had with them and Read your manual Cause it tells you you have to adjust the valves every time you change the oil And you do have to. it'll get harder to start as u use it more but good luck and god bless you & yours
Rowan is so cute! Nice job on the flooring.
Rowan is so adorable, love the way she can see herself in the camera and her smile!!
Thanks for the video.
well done nice job
I didn’t know you can put a water tank in a roof cool and are you sure the attic roof will support the weight of the tank and the water will need to put more support beams to hold the extra weight 🙂🙂😋🤔❓
Tell Rowan hello .😅 I think it's adorable how she talks into the camera she was just dancing right along she's beautiful
I honestly think you should have your hair tied up when you are doing this. You could end up with hair in the tank and possibly cause issues with any pumps or shutoffs that you have. Also it’s not very sanitary if you want to use it as drinking water. I’m not trying to be bossy or ignorant, just a health conscious person.
Was it pretty warm in the loft? Flooring looks great. Last part went real fast with precut pieces. Have you seen moose and deer in the yard? You both have done alit of remodelling homes in Wisconsin and now your new build in Alaska. Good skills to have.
