Forest Fire Near Our Homestead!
It has been a dry, hot summer in Alaska which means there are many forest fires across the state. One started a little too close to home for our liking. Being near the only road to get to and from our property we wanted to keep a close eye on the progress of this fire.
The fire grew quickly so we decided to take a trip away from home not knowing the direction the fire may go. Luckily it was dealt with right away. Currently it is still active, but appears to not be growing much in size. We are hoping the weather will continue to cool off and assist with the fire fighting efforts.

Starting the Wood Shed - Setting posts and laying foundation logs
Просмотров 20 тыс.9 часов назад
We set the posts in the ground for our wood shed build. This will be the perimeter of the shed and quicker half of this building project. Long logs are the foundation for the other half which will support our new sawmill platform as well as a room dedicated for drying out and storing the lumber we mill. This multi purpose building should come together fairly quickly as long as we keep working a...
Breaking Ground - Clearing land for our big summer project
Просмотров 23 тыс.День назад
After a slow start to our short Alaskan summer, we are finally starting our next big build. We hired a neighbor to clear ground to make way for a multiple use building. This will house our firewood, be shelter for our side by side, cover for the sawmill, and also utilize the roof for our solar panels as well as create a solar kiln to dry and store the lumber we mill. Equipment Maintenance

This week we spent some time doing maintenance on most of our machines. Almost everything is getting an oil change, but we have more fixes planned for the truck, snow machine, and our side by side. We have a small update on the tractor that will lead to our plans coming up later this month. 00:00 Intro 3:10 Generator 6:35 Snow Machine 21:52 Side by Side 39:32 Truck Our Mailing Address: PO Box 1...
Greenhouse Tour - Our first garden in Alaska
Просмотров 12 тыс.21 день назад
We finally planted out the greenhouse and figured this would be the perfect time to walk through to show what we have in the ground so far. We are hoping this will provide us fresh food to eat as well as ingredients to preserve for over winter. Lori enjoys trying as many varieties and types of plants and planting them intermingled with each other. This is a relaxed system that seems to provide ...
Water Restock - Hauling water in the summer
Просмотров 14 тыс.Месяц назад
Water is the most important need we have on the homestead and as the seasons change so do the ways we bring it in. We are constantly adjusting our system and trying to improve how things are done as we get experience using our water setup on a daily basis. We are still hopeful that one day we will get a well, but until that day we must be conscious of our water usages and mindful of the ways we...
One Year Off Grid in Alaska

We made it one year at our off grid, remote property in Alaska. There were so many ups and downs but our grit and determination to succeed allowed us to never give up no matter what we faced. Our Broken Tractor - Troubleshooting to get it running
Просмотров 12 тыс.Месяц назад
Time to fix the most frustrating - and potentially only thing we regret - purchase from last summer was this old tractor. It broke down on the trail getting to our property and ultimately led to our old truck lighting on fire leaving us stranded. Cody is learning every step of the way and figuring things out to get this tractor running again. Having a large piece of equipment will be a huge gam...
Bringing in dirt - Preparing the greenhouse for planting
Просмотров 14 тыс.Месяц назад
It is almost time to start planting out the garden. With our truck finally being able to drive up to our property, we picked up a bed worth of topsoil to start forming our aisles in the greenhouse. We also stopped at a farm to shovel some horse manure for some added nutrients. This project also allowed us to utilize some rotten wood and a good amount of our sawdust that we have laying around. W...
Making Birch Syrup - Turning sap into syrup
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
We have been patiently waiting since our move to Alaska to try out birch sap and syrup. The spring weather has finally been warm enough for the sap to be running so we tapped some trees! Our first attempt resulted in accidental caramel and we don't recommend trying it. As it was our first time making syrup we learned a lot and will definitely try this again next year. Hopefully with slightly be...
Spring Preparations - Emptying the greenhouse
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 месяца назад
With spring in Alaska finally here to stay we start preparations for the greenhouse. The first step is moving all of the stuff we have stored in there somewhere else. Using offcuts from the sawmill, Cody layered a platform for everything to be temporarily moved behind the house. Right now storage is our biggest issue, but hopefully that will get better each year as we keep chipping away at proj...

I’m glad you left early, always better to be safe . I live in Northern California. In the Sierra Nevada mountains. When they say leave just go, even if it’s not mandatory. I’ve lived here 3 years. Had to be evacuated once so far. But I use to live in Chico and we watched as Paradise, the town , burned to the ground.❤

Good to play it safe. I'm in Southern Oregon and we get some crazy wild-fires now and then and they're nothing to fool with! With difficult terrain and no roads it can spread to 1,000(s) of acres in a short time with no easy end in sight. Even when it's in more populated, farm areas it can still take weeks for containment.

You could glue the diagonal wood to a thin piece of plywood, and then add your frame around it. just paint the plywood black first just in case.

Many of us, who live in your neighborhood and to Caswell, use HAM to stay informed. Especially helpful during the 2015 Sockeye fire evacuation. I’d recommend spending $25 for a Baofeng UV5r so you can monitor 154.295 MATCOM . Use it like a scanner. EMS/Fire is not encrypted in the Valley.

I’ve wondered about all the families I watch on you tube. I’m glad y’all are safe. Wildfires are just that and can be unpredictable. We’ve evacuated from one and lost everything we owned from another one that we were sure they’d get out before it reached us…..boy we’re we wrong! Another one this summer came within 1/4 mile from us. We frequently have 40-60 mph winds. Stay safe and enjoy your baby and home.

Always scary when there's a fire near. The first we experienced on our homestead, a neighbor started and we were able to stop it about 200 feet from our door. It ate about 100 acres. The second one was maybe a mile away. We could see the glow from the fire at night

If I lived in Alaska I’d make sure I live close to a creek and I would clear all the dead underbrush back at least 100yrds. Maybe keep a trash pump with a fire hose handy.
