Having lived in a two story farm house heated by multiple wood heaters most of my 70 years , let me give you a little advice . When cleaning the stove pipe or chimneys in my case ,,you leave everything hooked up and clean from the top down . That way most all the loose creosote is in your stove or heater ,, not on your floors and walls. This makes cleanup much easer especially if you have a shopvac to suck up the ash from the heater / stove . Great content and best of luck to you
I always clean from the top of the roof, but I guess its a bit different with such a steep angle on an A Frame house, at the end of the day sometimes its more about just getting the job done - all the best
I was just about to add a similar comment. Keep everything attached and go from there too down! Have to admit, I wish I’d had that drill attachment! Wish I’d had one when we used to do ours. That old metal sweeper go heavy after a while!
I started watching your video’s about two months ago and found myself intrigued. I had to go back to the start of your journey and I am glad I did. The word that comes to mind is wow. You two are an inspiration and I am so glad I came across your channel. I’m too old now and live in New Zealand where there are far too many regulations so watching your energy and overcoming the obstacles is great therapy for me. Stay safe and keep up the great work, thanks heaps
Thanks for the tips re cleaning the glass on the stove. Also, loved that way of making muffins. I'm going to try it tomorrow. I'm 78 years old and still learning.😊
Flooring looks beautiful! I know you will appreciate the ease of cleaning it so much more than that wooden floor and I learned something from you guys using the woodstove ash to clean the windows. It did a beautiful job I don’t have a hot stove but if I ever do - I now I know how to clean the windows. You guys are doing a great job. I have so much fun watching you guys and the progress you’re making keep up the good work!!!
You guys did a good job! I think that would be my least favorite chore right with chopping firewood 😂😅. Don't listen to these ones that offer free advice. They apparently dont understand this is your video on your channel. Keep on being you and you all are doing a great job!
Lori enjoys splitting firewood. It is a dirty job because of the stove design. The ash doesn’t fall into the firebox like most stoves, it falls on top and down the side of the oven part which is difficult to clean out so we find it easier just to remove a section of pipe.
Kim Reddy from South Africa had me mosey to your channel in a arm lock😮. Kidding, she loves your videos & sneaks peeks during work 😂. I have to watch during the coming holidays though 💖🏘️🌳👍
long time ago we had a good wood stove we used boot polish on it not cooking only sides came up really good wow that was a messy job looks great nice clean job looks so good now
The stove looks beautiful❤,, looks so cozy with the fire gong in it😊.. looks like Iree claimed her spot for the winter😊.. your muffins look delicious ❤.. Thank you for sharing..
Loved the sound of the fire❤ sure miss the wood burning fireplace we had in Anchorage. We retired to Idaho and there's a "gas" fireplace in our house. Hardly use it. It's just not the same. Wish I could have smelled those muffins yummm❤
Boy the wood stove cleaned up really good. A messy job. I think in England that is called a chimney sweep? Buy not electric. Irie has staked her claim to a spot for winter lol. I could tell Rowan was asleep when you were talking softly and stacking the firewood gently. Missed seeing her in this video. Job well done Lori & Cody 👏 🇦🇺 fan
Thank you! Rowan is a joy to have around. She was gone and hanging out at a neighbors for most of this project until we were able to get the mess under control. She does a decent job sleeping through the construction noise but I do like to try and make it easier on her when I can while she is napping.
Put a hole in a trash bag & run your rod through hole. Tape the bag to the end of the chimney pipe. Bag will catch creosote as you clean the chimney upwards.
This tip might help you out. My chimney sweep takes the plate out of the inside top of the stove and feeds his flexible pipe cleaner rods up the pipe to the top and sweeps, pulling it down wards. I do believe that all stoves top plates come off. Maybe if you can Google your make of stove. But we'll done on your cleaning.
Most stovepipe installations include a slip joint so you can assemble and disassemble easily. Top down is the cleanest method by far as all the debris can be contained. It does need to be done in dry weather so the roof isn't slippery or working from a ladder in your case is easy. Given half a chance that soot can get everywhere.
Maybe if you poked a small hole in the bottom of the plastic bag, push the long plastic tube threw the hole, than attach the brush back on, and stick up you chimney pipe holding the plastic back around your chimney pipe. It should catch all the black dust. Just a thought.
If you periodically burn an aluminum soda can in the stove, you would be able to cut down on the kreasote buildup in the chimney. Once every couple of weeks should do it. Just a tip I've been using for a few years
I was watching another offgrade show and she was cleaning the stove and clean the windows. She just rolled up foil and rubbed foil on it and it came pretty clean. You might want to try that just to see.
I watched another channel clean their chimney. they duct taped a large trash bag to the pipe, put their cleaner through the bag and all the creosote landed in the bag, easy clean up
Fun job "not'. But great work making sure its clean and safe. Saw the temp the other morning. .. a day to get the chill off the house. Rowan sounded like she wanted to supervise
Such a mess to clean but the stove looks new again. Does it need to be cleaned more than once a year? The berry muffin looks yummy. Easier in one big pan. Just noticed, you finished the floor too. Nice work!
Hi. If don't care of me asking, but where did you get your oil to put on your wood stove. We have a wood stove and I need to clean ours up shortly. We use wood to heat with. I live in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee.
OMG, I never heard so much not needed or wanted advice. They have lived there for awhile now and surprise they have made it thus far without all you sideline Monday morning quarterbacks.
You take a large garbage bag you cut a hole in the side of the garbage bag run your clean out line through the side hole. Take duct tape and duct tape the garbage bag around your pipe as you clean out the pipe it'll all fall into the garbage bag and you won't feel your house full of pipe dust.
You were lucky, coming from the bottom could have ended bad. Next time come from the top. First, remove the pipe at the bottom of stove. Put your bag on the end and tape it. Now, go to the top remove the rain cap, and clean.
It’s a surface rust where wiping it with water mostly cleans it up but it would look rusty again once dried. The oil cooks in a turns black so it looks new again. If it were a deep rust we would likely use a wire wheel to take most of the rust off before oiling it.
maybe you younguns don't know this but thats how you get lye soap....boil down the ash.... remember granny from beverly hillbillies boiling it down and making lye soap by the cement pond....lol...now i am dating myself.....lol

Run your cleaning rod through a bag and then install the brush hold the bag around the pipe.
save cleaning take out side--if you do like you said from outside and come down can you not fit a pail or something inside the stove to catch the soot
Save the ash for your garden

We clean it in the spring and fall, but how you burn and how often determines how often it will need cleaned.
Tell us about the fans on the back of the stove.
They are heat activated fans that help push the heat away from the stove to circulate around the house better.
🇳🇴👍👍🥇

Just a basic muffin recipe with blueberries and raspberries we had picked.

You need to clean it from the top and let the kreosote fall into the stove!
Don't forget to put railing around the stove to protect the baby from getting too close.
You got all kinds of common sense ideas 😅😂

What brand stove is that?
Caliskan
Does that oil help to scrap off the rust?
